DRIVING COMMERCIAL RELEVANCE THROUGH DATA AND PERFORMANCE AS ANOTHER YEAR ROLLS BY, it provides an opportunity to reflect not only on what we have achieved as a Society, but also on the strength and momentum of the Droughtmaster breed across the Australian beef industry. The past twelve months have again demonstrated why Droughtmasters continue to earn the confidence of commercial cattle producers. In an environment where profitability, adaptability and efficiency are becoming increasingly important, our breed continues to deliver practical solutions for beef businesses operating across a wide range of production systems. While strong sale results often make the headlines, the true measure of success is what happens beyond the sale ring. It is the performance of Droughtmaster cattle in commercial herds, feedlots and processing plants that underpins the growing reputation of our breed. Pleasingly, we continue to see increasing recognition of these strengths throughout the supply chain. One area I am particularly passionate about is ensuring we continue to showcase and validate the commercial performance of Droughtmaster cattle. Over the past eighteen months, the Society has successfully conducted two feedlot and carcass competitions in partnership with Mort & Co/JBS and Wide Bay/ Nolan’s. These competitions have provided valuable opportunities to benchmark Droughtmaster cattle in commercial environments and generate meaningful data for breeders, buyers and the wider industry. These competitions are about far more than ribbons and trophies. They provide independent evidence of the traits we talk about every day - growth, feed efficiency, adaptability, carcass performance and profitability. They help tell the Droughtmaster story

in a language that commercial producers understand and trust. I encourage all members to become involved in these initiatives wherever possible. The more cattle we can benchmark and the more data we can generate, the stronger our commercial message becomes. Looking ahead, we are excited to be conducting another feedlot competition commencing in January at ACC’s Brindley Park Feedlot, focusing on the domestic heifer market. This project will provide another excellent opportunity to evaluate Droughtmaster performance in a commercially relevant environment and further demonstrate the versatility of the breed. Member participation in these programs is critical. Every entry contributes to a broader understanding of the breed and helps strengthen our position within the industry. Whether you are a stud breeder, commercial producer or emerging member of the Society, I encourage you to support these initiatives and take advantage of the learning opportunities they provide. The coming year will also see preparations continue to build towards Beef Australia 2027. Beef is much more than a cattle show; it is one of the most signiﬁcant opportunities available to showcase our breed to domestic and international audiences. It provides a platform to connect with commercial producers, engage with industry stakeholders, attract new members and demonstrate the progress our breed continues to make. Success at Beef 2027 will not be determined solely by those exhibiting cattle. It will be built on the involvement of members from across the Society, whether through volunteering, participating in competitions and events, supporting commercial activities or

simply helping promote the breed throughout the week. I encourage all members to become involved and help us present the very best version of Droughtmaster Australia to the wider beef industry. As a Society, we also need to become better at celebrating and promoting our successes. We have much to be proud of. Across the country, Droughtmaster breeders continue to achieve outstanding sale results, expand into new markets and build highly successful commercial breeding operations. We are seeing increasing demand for Droughtmaster genetics, strong commercial acceptance and growing recognition of the breed’s ability to deliver profitable outcomes in a range of production systems. Too often, however, these achievements go unnoticed outside our own circles. Every successful bull sale, every commercial producer achieving outstanding results with Droughtmaster-influenced cattle, every carcass competition result and every member making a positive contribution to the industry helps strengthen the reputation of our breed. These are stories worth sharing. They provide proof of performance and help reinforce the confidence that producers have in Droughtmaster genetics. Our future growth will come not only from producing quality cattle but from telling our story effectively. We have a breed with a proud history, proven commercial performance and a bright future. We should never be shy about promoting those strengths. As we move into another spring bull sale season, I would like to extend my best wishes to all vendors preparing cattle for sale and to the many commercial producers evaluating their purchasing decisions. of work, planning and investment goes into producing quality sale bulls, and the strength of our sale system is a reflection of the confidence that exists between breeders and their clients. I wish every vendor success throughout the selling season and thank them for their ongoing commitment to improving the breed. Equally, I wish buyers every success in their selections. Purchasing a bull is one of the most important investment decisions a cattle producer can make. While seasons, markets and input costs may fluctuate, the genetic decisions made today can influence the direction and profitability of a herd for the next 10 to 15 years. The bulls purchased this spring will contribute not only to next year’s calf crop, but to future generations of breeding females

and progeny. That is why objective data, structural soundness, fertility, temperament and proven commercial performance remain so important when making selection decisions.

The continued demand for Droughtmaster bulls across Australia is a testament to the conﬁdence producers have in the breed’s ability to deliver proﬁtable and predictable outcomes. Whether you are presenting cattle for sale or investing in new genetics, you are contributing to the ongoing improvement of the breed and the broader Australian beef industry. Looking ahead, I believe Droughtmaster Australia is exceptionally well positioned. We have strong commercial demand, increasing industry recognition, valuable research programs, committed members and a breed that continues to meet the needs of modern beef production.

A YEAR OF GROWTH, PROGRESS AND INDUSTRY RECOGNITION THE PAST 12 MONTHS have been another significant year for Droughtmaster Australia. Across the country we have seen strong demand for Droughtmaster genetics, growing confidence in the breed’s commercial performance, increased engagement with members and industry partners, and continued progress towards the objectives outlined in our strategic plan, Data. Growth. Legacy. Perhaps most pleasing has been the positive sentiment surrounding the breed. Whether attending sales, field days, shows or industry events, there is a strong sense of confidence in the future of Droughtmasters and recognition of the breed’s ability to deliver profitable outcomes across a wide range of production systems.

A Breed in Demand The 2025–26 season delivered some outstanding results for Droughtmaster breeders. Record top prices were achieved across all Society-sponsored sales, highlighting the quality of cattle being produced and the strong demand for Droughtmaster genetics. Beyond the auction ring, reports from members across multiple regions indicate that private and paddock bull sales have remained exceptionally strong. This level of demand reﬂects the conﬁdence commercial producers have in the breed’s adaptability, fertility, temperament and market performance. Importantly, these results are not isolated to one region or one production system. Droughtmasters continue to perform across northern, western, central and southern markets, reinforcing the breed’s reputation as one of Australia’s most versatile beef cattle breeds.

Promoting the Breed Beyond the Farm Gate One of the most exciting developments over the past year has been the continued growth of Droughtmaster beef promotion activities. The Society has continued to work with industry partners, restaurants, hotels and supply chain stakeholders to increase awareness of Droughtmaster beef and showcase the breed’s eating quality credentials. Initiatives that connect consumers directly with the breed help strengthen the entire value chain and provide greater recognition of the work undertaken by our breeders. Events such as FarmFest, AgQuip, the Ekka, Casino Beef Week and numerous regional activities have provided valuable opportunities to engage with producers, consumers and industry stakeholders. These events continue to play an important role in telling the Droughtmaster story and highlighting the breed’s commercial strengths.

Investing in Data and Genetic Progress The long-term success of the breed depends on our ability to continue investing in performance recording, research and genetic improvement. The Beef Information Nucleus (BIN) and Repronomics projects remain central to this commitment. Throughout the year, signiﬁcant work continued across these programs, with data collection, performance analysis and commercial evaluation helping to strengthen the information available to breeders. These projects provide beneﬁts that extend well beyond individual herds. They help improve the accuracy of genetic evaluation,

support better breeding decisions and ensure Droughtmaster breeders remain at the forefront of innovation within the beef industry. The Society also continued to work closely with industry partners regarding BREEDPLAN extension services and future opportunities to improve member access to genetic tools and support.

Supporting Members Through Innovation Providing practical value to members remains a key priority. During the year, we launched a new member location map on the Society website, making it easier for producers and industry stakeholders to connect with Droughtmaster breeders across Australia. At the same time, the Society continues to explore future technology opportunities and partnerships that will ensure Droughtmaster Australia remains well positioned for the next generation of breed administration and herd recording.

Celebrating Our People During the year, we celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Droughtmaster Futurity, a signiﬁcant milestone for one of the Society’s most enduring and valued programs. For four decades, the Futurity has provided young people with opportunities to develop practical skills, build industry connections and gain valuable experience within the beef industry. The anniversary event was a ﬁtting tribute to the many volunteers, supporters, sponsors and participants whose Continued on Page 6 ɻ

Attention is already turning towards a number of exciting opportunities ahead.

I would like to thank our Board of Directors, led by Chair Steven Farmer, our committees, volunteers and Company Secretary Michele Galagher for their leadership and support throughout another busy year.

Another highlight was the Droughtmaster Feature Show in Biloela, which attracted an outstanding lineup of quality cattle, strong member participation, industry stakeholders and spectators. The event showcased the strength, consistency and commercial relevance of the Droughtmaster breed while celebrating the professionalism, passion and commitment of our breeders.

Planning is well underway for Beef Australia 2027, which will provide an important platform to showcase the Droughtmaster breed to both domestic and international audiences. The Society is also continuing to explore opportunities through sponsorship, international engagement and strategic partnerships that support future growth.

The Society also continued to support youth development and educational initiatives throughout the year, helping to ensure the next generation remains actively engaged with both the Droughtmaster breed and the broader beef industry.

As we look forward, our focus remains clear: continuing to build member value, supporting genetic improvement, promoting the breed and ensuring Droughtmaster Australia remains strong and relevant for future generations.

I also extend my sincere thanks to our staff Leigh, Carley, Jacinta, Korrina and Kirstie whose professionalism, dedication and commitment continue to underpin the successful delivery of the Society’s services and programs. A YEAR LIKE NO OTHER DROUGHTMASTER BREAKS RECORDS ACROSS THE BOARD IN ANY GIVEN YEAR, a single record-breaking result at a Society-sponsored sale would be cause for celebration. In the 25/26 ﬁnancial year, the Droughtmaster Society achieved three. Across the Droughtmaster National Bull Sale, the Roma Droughtmaster Bull Sale, and the Droughtmaster National Female Sale, new record top prices were set at each - a feat that speaks not just to the quality of individual animals, but to the broader momentum building behind one of Australia’s most versatile and trusted beef breeds.

The results that defined a year At the Droughtmaster National Bull Sale, Oasis A Cracker Jack offered by Oasis A Droughtmasters - sold for $280,000, a record top price for the sale and a figure that reverberated well beyond the sale ring. The buyers, Sam and Jane Barton of Huntly Droughtmasters, were making a clear statement about where they see the value in elite Droughtmaster genetics. At Roma, Sommer Genius from Sommer Stud Droughtmasters topped the sale at $50,000, purchased by Vitwood Droughtmasters - another record result at a sale that has long served as a barometer for commercial and stud sector confidence in the breed.

Then came the National Female Sale, where Glenlands J High Class, offered by Glenlands J Droughtmasters, sold for $52,000 to Vitwood Droughtmasters - a record top price for the female sale, and a result that underscored the growing appetite for elite Droughtmaster females at the highest end of the market. Each of these results reﬂects a convergence of factors that have been building across the Droughtmaster breed for some time - improved genetics, increased stud investment, and a commercial sector that is increasingly vocal about what Droughtmaster cattle deliver on the ground. Droughtmaster Australia CEO Simon Gleeson has been watching this trajectory with considerable satisfaction.

Photo by Kent Ward. “When you look at the record results across the National Bull Sale, Roma Bull Sale and National Female Sale together, it reflects a breed experiencing very strong commercial confidence right across the supply chain,” he said. “Over the past three to four years, Droughtmaster breeders have invested heavily in advancing the quality of their genetics, and these outstanding results are now reflecting that commitment and long-term investment.” That confidence is visible not just at the top end of the market, but throughout the sale averages - a sign that the rising tide is lifting the whole fleet, not just the standout lots.

Australia’s natural wonder Part of what is driving renewed investment in Droughtmaster genetics is the breed’s welldocumented suitability to the Australian environment. In an era of increasing climate variability, the Droughtmaster’s heat tolerance, tick resistance, fertility and capacity to perform across variable country is resonating with producers looking for cattle that work without the inputs that more exotic breeds demand.

The future is Droughtmaster With the 2026–27 sale season on the horizon, the Droughtmaster Society enters it with considerable momentum. “A lot of work has gone into strengthening the breed over many years and these outcomes are really a credit to our members and breeders across Australia,” said Simon. “As a Society, we have focused on promoting commercial relevance, improving genetic information and performance recording, investing in marketing and communication, and continuing to position Droughtmasters as a modern, proﬁtable beef breed suited to northern production systems.” “There has also been a strong emphasis on telling the commercial

While the record results speak for themselves, Simon says the real story is what they collectively signal - that Droughtmasters have firmly established their place in the market, at every level. “While all cattle markets can fluctuate, the long-term fundamentals for the breed remain extremely positive,” he said. “Northern Australia continues to require cattle that are fertile, adaptable, efficient and capable of performing across a wide range of production systems and market endpoints. Droughtmasters are very well placed in that environment.” He also points to emerging opportunities around sustainability, natural production systems, and both domestic and international demand for high-quality beef produced in challenging climates - areas where the breed is well aligned. “Commercial producers are focused on profitability and resilience,” he said, “and we believe Droughtmasters will continue to demonstrate strong value in these areas well into the future.” For the Droughtmaster Society and the community behind it, 2025 has set a new benchmark - and with the fundamentals of the breed as strong as they are, there’s every reason to believe the best is still ahead.

“Producers are increasingly recognising the value of cattle that can perform in northern Australian conditions while still delivering fertility, temperament, adaptability and strong carcass outcomes,” Simon said. “The Droughtmaster breed has always been highly relevant to Australia’s environment, but what we are seeing now is broader recognition of its proﬁtability and versatility.” That recognition is bringing new faces into the market. Simon says the Society is seeing increasing interest from progressive commercial producers who may not traditionally have used Droughtmaster bulls, as well as stronger interest from investors willing to pay a premium to secure

Top quality cattle and a clean sweep in the interbreed judging against other breeds made the 2026 Droughtmaster Feature Show at the 90th Callide Valley Show one for the books. Glenlands J Gibraltar took out Supreme Champion Exhibit honours, exhibited by Jason & Carissa Childs. The Droughtmaster bull also claimed Grand Champion Bull of the Show before going on to secure the prestigious Supreme Exhibit title. Judge Ken McKenzie is a lifelong Droughtmaster breeder and travelled to Biloela from the Central Highlands. He described Glenlands J Gibraltar as a standout animal, difficult to fault.

VALLEY SHOW The interbreed results included Grand Champion Steer of the Show awarded to Redskin Juicy from Redskin Droughtmasters, Grand Champion Female of the Show to Glenlands D Elke exhibited by AC Cattle Co, and Grand Champion Bull and Supreme Exhibit both going to Glenlands J Gibraltar. Having last judged at the Feature Show 10 years ago, Ken’s seen the quality lift across the breed. Reproductive technologies such as IVF has helped smaller studs access elite bloodlines and become increasingly competitive. “It can be very difficult for some of the smaller studs to access those expensive sires, so a lot of them are tapping into some of the really good bloodlines and fast forwarding their setups,” Ken said, “It’s made the competition very strong, and it’s certainly

NEXT GEN COMMITTEE WELCOMES NEW APPOINTMENTS Three familiar faces within the Droughtmaster Australia Next Gen network have stepped into leadership roles on the Next Gen Committee. Sarah Holloway (President), Amy Collins (Secretary) and Sarah Sehmish-Lahey (Committee Representative) have each followed different pathways into the Droughtmaster community, but share a strong commitment to supporting the next generation of the industry.

SARAH HOLLOWAY For Sarah Holloway, joining the Next Gen Committee is an opportunity to give back to a program that helped open the door to the industry for her. Sarah was ﬁrst introduced to the committee after receiving one of the Droughtmaster Australia bursaries offered during Beef Australia. “That opportunity exposed me to the Next Gen committee and the wider Droughtmaster community,” she says. “The Droughtmaster community is a supportive one, everyone’s keen to help you learn.” She may not have grown up in the cattle industry, but after completing her Certiﬁcate III in Agriculture, there’s nowhere else Sarah would rather be.

“I fell in love with agriculture and got involved wherever I could,” she says. Now based in Gatton and working in business analysis, Sarah has been part of the Droughtmaster industry for ﬁve years and hopes to help create similar opportunities for others. “I want to give opportunities to other people through being part of the Next Gen committee, just like I was given, so others can also get into agriculture even if they haven’t come from the industry,” Sarah says. She added that the committee is always keen to welcome new members and encourages anyone interested to get involved.

AMY COLLINS Amy Collins worked for a Droughtmaster breeder while studying agriculture at university, an experience she describes as invaluable in helping her establish connections within the industry while gaining boots on the ground experience alongside her studies. “Not only did it help establish me in a community after moving away from home, it also gave me practical experience while studying agriculture,” Amy says. Amy believes one of the biggest challenges facing young people entering the industry is bridging the gap between formal education and industry careers.

“That gap is slowly being addressed through events such as Futurity and initiatives like Next Gen and school cattle teams, which give students exposure to the industry while they are studying.” Originally from a commercial cattle property near Biloela, Amy moved to south-east Queensland for university and now works within the sales team at Ridley Agriproducts, based south of Toowoomba. During her time on the committee, Amy hopes to encourage even more young people to get involved. “I’d really love to see younger people join Next Gen. We’re a fairly mature committee currently, and the youth are our future,” she says. “I wasn’t exposed to committees such as Next Gen in my early teens, and I wish I had been.”

SARAH SEHMISH-LAHEY Veterinarian Sarah Sehmish-Lahey brings both professional and producer experience to the Next Gen Committee. A graduate of the University of Queensland’s Gatton campus, Sarah works as a rural vet where she combines her love for large animals with supporting regional communities.

Sarah runs Roselah Droughtmasters with her husband, Lawrence, and has a particular interest in improving herd management and reproductive efficiency in beef cattle, with a focus on lifting productivity and proﬁtability for producers. Her involvement in agriculture extends beyond the paddock – in 2022, Sarah was named the Queensland Country Life Showgirl, recognising her strong contribution to rural communities.

THANK YOU TO OUTGOING MEMBERS Droughtmaster Australia extends its appreciation to outgoing Next Gen Committee members Lauren Finger and Mikaela Gauci for their leadership and commitment over several years. Lauren and Mikaela helped drive a number of key initiatives aimed at building opportunities for young members within the breed. These included the Young Beef Producers Forum bursaries, the Stud Cattle Showing Handbook, and the planning of Next Gen property tours and a potential international youth exchange. They also played a major role in fundraising through the Next Gen Auctions at the Droughtmaster National Bull Sale and activities at Beef Australia, helping secure funding to support future initiatives. 5. Don’t underestimate the donor “IVF has gained a little bit of negativity in recent years, but it goes back to donor selection, it’s not the technology selecting the wrong animals to reproduce from. The classic scenario is someone paying a lot of money for a heifer, she hasn’t proven herself as a reliable breeding animal, and now we’ve got ten calves on the ground before we realise she can’t raise a calf. For me, that’s not the technology’s fault, that’s inappropriate selection of the donor,” he says. The ﬁx loops back to tip one, a clear breeding objective and rigorous donor selection before a single embryo is produced.

6. Get bulls and heifers ready now With bull selling and joining seasons fast approaching, Callan’s advice is practical. “With heifer management, your focus should be getting them to critical weights pre-breed to improve their conception rates in their maiden joins. We’re seeing lots of people start to use ﬁxedtime AI in that maiden heifer group, and we’re coupling that with reproductive tract scoring or

ovarian scanning to identify the heifers that are cycling pre-join,” he says. On bulls, he pushes for more than a semen test. “A good bull breeding soundness exam, by an accredited cattle veterinarian, looking at all aspects of that bull check certiﬁcate, not just crush-side motility, but also the morphology assessment and the physical assessment. We fail more mature bulls on physical abnormalities than we do reproductive failure, particularly feet and legs,” he says.

7. Don’t leave your best genetics in the paddock For a producer sitting on a genuinely elite female, the maths is hard to argue with. “Those that aren’t using advanced reproductive technologies are probably leaving some of their biggest assets in the paddock. If you have lead females having one calf a year, what a waste. In my own herd, with my donor model, some of those cows will have twenty, thirty, forty calves registered. As far as speeding up genetic gain, when you can handpick the sire and the dam, your rate of genetic gain is doubled, and it’s compounded generation to generation when you’re selecting both sides of the cross,” he says.

In a solid performance, Droughtmaster vendors saw male averages hurdle by $3,595 per head while clearance spiked by 25 percent at the Annual February All Breeds Bull and Female Sale, CQLX. Female values upgraded by $310 per head, although auction clearance levels dipped by 30 percent compared to the 2025 result.

Simon Kinbacher, Garthowen Stud, Biggenden landed an $11,000 sale for his pair, topping at $12,000 for Garthowen Fred-O3 (IVF) (P) (AI) (Glenlands D Die Hard (IVF) (PP) (AI)) (30-months) (808kgs) (11/9mm) (133 EMA) (4.6 IMF), selling to Gavin Ford, Fordees, Mundubbera.

Thirty-one bulls sold to a $38,000 top, combining for a $10,581 average and 79 percent clearance - a marked step up from last year’s $6,986 average and 54 percent clearance across 37 entries. On the female side, a $6,000 top set a $4,143 average from a 70 percent clearance.

Sommer Stud dominates the top of the board The headline act was Sommer Hugo (IVF) (P) (AI), catalogued by Dan and Teneale Sommer, Sommer Stud Droughtmasters, Maleny. The 22-month-old son of Sommer Double Barrell (IVF) (P) (AI) - weighing 821kg and scanning 140 EMA, 5.3 IMF with 11/7mm fat - sold via phone to Jamie Johnson, Burnett View Stud, Drinan, for $38,000. Three from Sommer set a $29,667 average, and that result included the $35,000 paternal half, Sommer Hendrix ((IVF) (P) (AI)) (22-months) (859kgs) (10/7mm) (147 EMA) (4.8 IMF) selling to Cliff and Sasha Mylrea, Needmor Stud, Gogango. Stablemate, Sommer Hercules (P) (AI) (Glenlands D Winchester (P) (IVF) (AI)) (25-months) (848kgs) (15/12mm) (133 EMA) (5.8 IMF) sold to Lynsey Park Stud, Bell operated by the Philp family.

The other Kinbacher entry, a paternal half to the $12,000 entry, Felix (P) (27-months) (756kgs) (10/10mm) (136 EMA) (4.9 IMF), went to Edward Maragna, Yerra. The 35th annual Highlands Droughtmaster Bull Sale returned to the Clermont Saleyards on Friday, March 6, and once again demonstrated the loyalty of buyers and vendors who have supported this ﬁxture for more than three decades. From an increased catalogue of 88 lots, 63 bulls were presented to the ring with 43 selling to record a 68 percent clearance, $9,930 average and $427,000 gross. While the result was back on last year’s $11,846 average, the sale delivered on what it has always done well - presenting a quality, consistent line-up that gave buyers genuine options across a range of types and price points.

A worthy top price Vale View Droughtmasters, Manumbar, topped the sale at $30,000 with Vale View Hot Shot 2 (PP), a 24-month-old registered bull by Oasis A Sir Mortlock (PP) and out of Vale View Collie 2 (P) (IVF). The impressive bull weighed 810 kilograms, scanned 130 square centimetres for eye muscle area, recorded 12 and 9 millimetres for P8 and rib fat, and measured 40 centimetres for scrotal circumference. Purchaser Luke Canty, Fortrus Pastoral, Gympie, said the family

had viewed the bull ahead of the sale and knew early he was the one. “We’re doing an AI program again this year, and he’ll be used as our mop-up bull with the heifers,” he said. The Fortrus operation had returned to Droughtmasters after a period with Brangus, and Mr Canty was clear about why. “We came back because we love the breed - they handle the ﬂies, they’ve got great temperament, and they’ve always done well for us.” It is a sentiment heard time and again, one that speaks to everything that makes the Droughtmaster such a compelling choice for commercial producers across Queensland and beyond. Vendor, Colleen Smith, said Hot Shot 2 had been a standout from the day he was born. “He’s always been a standout calf, and he’s backed by strong genetics. His half-brother Vale View You Ripper has done a lot of good for the breed, and the female line behind him is very special.” On the broader result, Colleen said, “Good bulls made their y which was pleasing, money, but it was probably a tougher day for some.”

The second top price of $24,000 went online via StockLive to Andrew Clarke, Thangool, for Oasis Trinidad - a 26-month-old registered horned bull by Oasis Rooster (P) and out of Oasis 645 (H), weighing 820 kilograms with a 140sq cm EMA.

Loyal support Bulk buying honours were shared between Lund Grain Pty Ltd, Wondabah, and Jellinbah Pastoral, Dysart, each securing six bulls. Jellinbah’s Dale Sibson has been coming to this sale for around 26 years - a testament to the consistency of the offering. “If they’re good bulls, they’ll sell well, and this sale always seems to present a good lineup,” he said. Jellinbah Pastoral secured six bulls to average $10,500, spending $63,000. The Munda Reds Droughtmaster stud had plenty to celebrate at its ﬁfth annual on-property bull sale at ‘Glencoe’, Gingin, recording a total clearance of 114 bulls and a $19,000 donation to Telethon. The charity bull is a feature of the Munda Reds Bull Sale, where the Thompson family generously donates the sale proceeds from its ﬁrst commercial bull offered to Telethon. This year, it sold for $19,000 to Rob Jowett, Warrawagine Cattle Company, Warrawagine and Wallal stations, Port Hedland, who has purchased the charity bull every single year since the initiative began. It takes the total amount raised for Telethon by the Thompsons to more than $100,000. “I admire what the Thompsons do, donating all the proceeds from the bull they put up each year,” Mr Jowett said. “My job is to help make sure the bull gets real value - which I was happy to do again today.” The Nutrien Livestock selling team, led by interstate guest auctioneers Dane Pearce and Trent McKinlay, Nutrien Ag Solutions stud stock, Rockhampton, Queensland, sold all 114 bulls to gross $718,500 at an overall average of $6,303. Fieldhouse Droughtmasters achieved a strong result at its 2026 bull sale in Western Australia, selling 72 of 77 bulls to top at $13,000 and average $5,556. Nutrien Livestock agent Damian Halls said the April 22 result was particularly pleasing given the challenging seasonal conditions experienced across much of the state. “The overall result was very positive considering how dry the season has been,” Damian said.

“The vast majority were repeat buyers who know the quality that they’re getting, although there were also two new Kimberley buyers in attendance, which was great to see,” he said.

“Parts of the coastal strip have received some rain, which really supported the sale.”

“People were impressed with the frame, stretch, structure, and temperament, which has also improved hugely over the past couple of years.”

The sale was backed largely by repeat buyers, reﬂecting conﬁdence in the Fieldhouse program and the consistency of its genetics. Damian said buyers were looking for homozygous double polled bulls and were familiar with the genetics on offer.

Despite reduced cattle numbers following several difficult seasons and some clients experiencing major damage recently as a result of Cyclone Narelle, producers continued to invest in new genetics to improve herd performance.

“People are willing to invest in better genetics and get the beneﬁt from them while they’re carrying limited numbers,” Damian said. The strong clearance rate and solid demand were encouraging signs for the breed. “It was a great result considering the season and the climate we’re in. It was a bloody great result,” Damian said. Fieldhouse Droughtmasters sells up to 100 bulls at its on-property sale at “Summer Green”, Jurien Bay each year. It supplies predominantly to large stations in Western Australia, with some Queensland cattle stations also in the mix.

Another complete clearance was achieved at the Annual Cloncurry Bull Sale in April, with vendors Darren and Helen Childs, Glenlands D, Theodore, and Eddie and Sharon Maxwell, Crown M, Julia Creek, selling all offered for an average of $8,485. The result was built on an already strong 2024 sale, which also cleared completely and topped at $24,500. Averages lifted $411 per head on last year’s result and $2,328 per head on the 2023 ﬁgure. Support came from the same loyal buyer base across the central, north and north-western areas of Queensland. Sale topper at $28,000 was Glenlands D 11812 (IVF) (P) (AI) (24-months) (800kg) (10/6mm) (140 EMA) (4.4 IMF). DECADE OF DATA PAYING OFF STRONGLY FOR DROUGHTMASTER BREEDERS The Northern Beef Information Nucleus (BIN) Steer Project has entered a new phase. Last year marked the last intake of steers from the Brian Pastures Research Facility and all future cohorts will now come through the Spyglass Beef Research Facility.

THE PROJECT WILL MOVE from running two separate groups of calves each year to one larger cohort. The latest intake, bought in June 2026, includes 170 Droughtmaster steers. The project is expected to continue through to the 2028 calf drop, with another two years of steer purchases still to come.

Strong results continue The latest cohorts are still showing the commercial performance of Droughtmaster cattle under pasture-based production systems.

At Brian Pastures, 117 of 119 Droughtmaster steers graded MSA, while 54 of 57 steers across the broader cohort also achieved MSA grading. The cattle also performed strongly ﬁnancially, with the Brian Pastures Droughtmaster steers averaging $2,725 per head. Importantly, these results have been achieved under grass-fed production systems. The cattle consistently meet fat cover requirements and grading within target market speciﬁcations.

What is the BIN Project? The Northern BIN Steer Project is a collaboration between the Droughtmaster Stud Breeders Society, Australian Brahman Breeders’ Association and Santa Gertrudis breeders, with support from Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA). The project uses steer progeny from the MLA-funded Repronomics Project, with Brahman, Droughtmaster and Santa Gertrudis cattle run together under the same commercial conditions from birth. The project has purchased 2,277 steers, including 942 Droughtmaster steers by more than 100 sires from 35 different stud preﬁxes. More than 1,700 steers have been carcass scanned and more than 1,800 have had detailed carcass data collected at processing.

What it means for Droughtmaster breeders One of the biggest outcomes of the project has been the generation of new BREEDPLAN information for Droughtmaster breeders. Before the project began, there was limited carcass data available to support the development of EBVs for traits such as intramuscular fat (IMF) and shear force. By collecting detailed carcass information from large numbers of cattle managed under the same conditions, the project has helped create new opportunities for breeders to select for commercially important carcass traits. Because all cattle are run together and processed under the same

‘START SMALL AND DO IT PROPERLY’: WARREN GIFFIN ON BUILDING CONFIDENCE WITH DROUGHTMASTERS For 34 years, Warren Giffin turned a 64-acre block along the Bruce Highway into one of the most hands-on agricultural classrooms in Queensland. Students didn’t just learn about cattle at Tully State High School – they bred them, handled them, showed them and built a stud herd from the ground up. What began with a few crossbred animals grew into a self-funded Droughtmaster operation with Tully State High School becoming Droughtmaster Stud #710. They managed around 50 head, producing stud bulls and ﬁelding show teams of up to 28 students. Along the way, hundreds of young people discovered conﬁdence, responsibility and a love for agriculture.

For Warren, one breed made it possible.

You spent more than three decades teaching agriculture at Tully State High. How did the Droughtmaster stud begin?

“The temperament of Droughtmasters makes them perfect for working with kids,” he says. “I can’t speak highly enough of them.” In recognition of his decades of dedication to education and the breed, Warren was awarded the 2022 Droughtmaster Society President’s Award. Now in retirement, Warren’s splitting his time between Australia and Argentina, where he’s still ﬂying the ﬂag for Droughtmasters.

“In my early childhood, my family owned a sheep and wheat property, and I always loved agriculture. It was in my blood, but I really developed a passion for cattle once I started teaching. About 32 years ago, we established the stud and ran the whole thing as a private enterprise. There was no government funding, and everything we built on the property came from cattle sales. The students helped build it all; the yards, fencing,

FEATURE shelters and from sales, we built our much-needed show shed. The students did everything apart from branding the stud cattle, including tagging, vaccinating, drenching, fencing, they did the lot. It was a real industry-standard operation.”

What makes Droughtmasters such a good breed for school programs? “The number one reason is temperament. When you’re working with people’s children, you’re looking after their babies. Safety is absolutely the top priority, and Droughtmasters have that beautiful, quiet temperament. They’re incredibly easy to work with, but they’re also very resilient. Tully has the highest rainfall in Australia. Our cattle have wet feet for six months of the year, but they handle it brilliantly. We rarely had foot issues or skin problems. They’re incredibly adaptable animals, and that’s why I say if you want young people to get into cattle, choose Droughtmasters. They’re low-maintenance, resilient, highly productive, and easy to handle. They’re just a beautiful breed.”

Did working with cattle help build students’ confidence? “Absolutely. I developed my own technique for handling and breaking. It’s basically a stepby-step desensitisation process, working them through the yards repeatedly and getting them used to the environment they experience in the show ring. The students grow in confidence incredibly quickly. They’ll start off a bit nervous, but before long, they’re rubbing the animals all over, putting halters on them and leading them around confidently. I also focused a lot on psychology, both for the cattle and the kids.

One rule we had was that we didn’t use negative words. We wouldn’t say things like “don’t be scared”. Instead, I’d spell it out, “don’t be s-c-a-r-e-d.” We would also have a laugh when doing this. The idea was to build belief, and because the cattle were so quiet, the students learned they could take control and be conﬁdent handling them. These lessons of conﬁdence, dedication and hard work stay with them, and so many of my students have gone on to do amazing things both in and out of the agricultural sector. Many have gone on to study at university, particularly in Veterinary Science. I’m very proud of them.”

Your show teams became well-known. What made them special? “Presentation was very important to me. If you’re going to do something, do it properly. All the halters were

polished, the brass shone, the cattle were spotless, clean ears, washed hooves, everything. The students presented themselves just as professionally. Uniformity was key, so they all wore the same blue jeans, Cattleman Akubras and polished brown boots. The girls had the same scarves, pearl earrings and their hair tied back neatly. When the team walked into the ring, they looked like a unit and highly professional, proud of themselves and their beasts. At one stage, we had 28 students and 16 cattle in the show team, and I was just so proud that day. You’re representing the stud, the breed, the industry and the Droughtmaster Society, so it was important we did it well. Parents weren’t allowed at training sessions either; they only saw the ﬁnished product in the show ring, and that made it even more exciting for them.”

FEATURE What advice would you give schools wanting to start a Droughtmaster program? “Start small and do it properly. You’ve got the welfare of the animals and the safety of the students to think about, so you need good infrastructure. Solid yards and a good crush are essential. That’s where most of the husbandry happens, and it has to be safe for both the animals and the students. The other thing is to choose quality genetics and animals with excellent temperament. Buy from reputable breeders. The Droughtmaster Society was incredibly supportive of our program. Breeders donated semen and sometimes loaned bulls. That kind of support makes a huge difference to long-term success. You don’t need a huge property either. You can run a very successful program with fewer animals, just focus on quality.”

What was your proudest moment during your career? “My proudest moments weren’t about ribbons. It was watching students take a young animal straight from the paddock and,

the industry in front of thousands of people.”

Do any cattle stand out from your years with the stud?

If they won a ribbon, that was a bonus. But to me, they were already winners because they’d learned to manage that animal. There was never pressure on them to win, and I think that’s why the program worked so well.”

What role do school programs play in the future of the beef industry? “They’re incredibly important. Agriculture is feeding the world, and programs like this help young people see the opportunities in the industry. At Tully, we had students from all sorts of backgrounds. Only about a third came from agricultural families. Some went on to trades through the Certiﬁcate II in Rural Operations, while others pursued university and studied agriculture more deeply through business, genetics, technology and animal health. School programs also promote agriculture to the wider public. When students exhibit cattle at shows, they’re representing

“Tully High Cassie and Tully High Roxanne. Cassie had 15 calves in 17 years. She was just incredible and the quietest cow you could imagine. Roxanne was the same. They were foundation cows for the stud and made a huge impact. When they reached the end of their road, we had them put down on the property and planted a tree in their honour.”

What are you doing now in retirement? “I retired about 12 months ago, and I’m splitting my time between Australia and Argentina. Argentina has an incredible beef industry, and I’m trying to introduce them to Droughtmasters. There’s a dry region in northern Argentina where they would ﬁt in beautifully, particularly in crossbreeding programs. I’ve done a few radio interviews over there promoting the attributes of the Droughtmaster and the possibility of importing semen. They like their own over there, but I’m conﬁdent I can get them on board.”

OF THE DROUGHTMASTER FUTURITY

The dinner and auction was well attended, with guests enjoying a delicious meal and celebrating award winners throughout the evening.

There are events on the agricultural calendar that exist to sell cattle. And then there are events that exist to build something larger - a community, a standard, a future. The Droughtmaster Futurity has always been the latter. When the ﬁrst Futurity was held at the Gatton Showgrounds on April 5, 1986, the concept was about giving young stud cattle the experience they needed before a season of shows, and giving young people a pathway into the industry alongside them. Sixtyeight cattle competed that day. Nobody was thinking about what it might look like in forty years. This year, we found out. The 40th Droughtmaster Futurity, held February 27 and 28 at the Toogoolawah Showgrounds, welcomed 157 exhibits from 38 studs across south east Queensland, representatives from seven schools, two days of competition, and a dinner and auction. Val Evans, Margaret Wilson and Ray Phillips - three of the original organising committee - were still there, still contributing, four decades after they helped start it all. Their presence alone tells you something important about what the Futurity has become. “The 40th anniversary represents a signiﬁcant milestone for the breed and the people who

have built it over generations,” said Droughtmaster Australia CEO, Simon Gleeson. “It highlights the strength of the Droughtmaster community and the role the Futurity has played in developing both cattle and people. Over the past four decades, the event has grown considerably in scale and purpose - with greater stud participation, strong school involvement and a noticeable lift in the quality of the cattle. It has evolved into both a showcase for genetics and a key pathway for young people entering the industry.”

A breed moving in the right direction The cattle on display at Toogoolawah reflected forty years of considered breeding decisions and both judges were vocal about the improvement they witnessed. Shannon Williamson, judging the Futurity for the first time, said the consistency of the draft was what stood out most. “The quality was very consistent from start to finish. Some of the classes were extremely high quality and quite difficult to judge, particularly with classes of up to 15 head. We

saw a lot of clean-coated cattle with plenty of thickness, while still maintaining strong tropical attributes - good ear, good skin type. Overall, the consistency right across the board really stood out.” Unled judge Greg Kroll, who last judged the Futurity in 2010, brought a perspective that only time can offer. “Even compared to then, the improvement - especially in the led cattle - has been significant. They’ve done a really good job.” He was particularly struck by progress in one area that has long been a focus for breeders. “The job the Droughtmaster breeders have done in cleaning up sheaths and navels really stood out. They were excellent this time.” The led classes produced a worthy Grand Champion in Seymour Quambatook, exhibited by Seymour Droughtmasters from the Mary River region at Paterson. The 18-month-old son of the $52,000 Seymour Madagascar and out of Glenlands D Avalon, Quambatook stood out in a highly competitive field, first taking out his class before going on to be awarded Champion Bull and ultimately Continued on Page 71 ɻ

Developing people, not just cattle The Futurity program has always carried an educational intent, and 2026 was no exception. Alongside the led and unled cattle competitions, the event hosted a school steer competition, junior judging, junior paraders, and an educational session on cattle showing etiquette delivered by principal judge Shannon Williamson on the Friday before competition began. This year, a record number of schools attended, and more than 50 students took part in

I was really impressed with their effort and enthusiasm.” Forty years on, with record school attendance, a judging panel that

saw meaningful generational improvement, and a community that keeps showing up, proved that developing cattle and developing people are not separate pursuits. “This year’s event was an outstanding success,” Simon Gleeson said, “with over 100 exhibits and excellent youth engagement, reflecting the continued progress of the breed and confidence in its future.” We look forward to the next forty.

TRUVALLE DROUGHTMASTERS “Forty years ago, my late husband (Peter Wilson) got talking with Ray Phillips and Neil and Val Evans, and they decided we needed to promote the Droughtmaster National Female Sale. A show prior to that would perhaps encourage quality animals to be offered at that sale. Ray had more experience with shows and showing cattle than Peter, and Neil and Val thought their showgrounds at Gatton would be a good venue. It was another idea to help promote and encourage quality animals for the Female Sale. So, that is how the Futurity began. It has now developed into encouraging students and members, giving them extra knowledge, tuition and a little bit of judging exercise to prepare them for the sales and shows to come. These days, it is held at the Toogoolawah Showgrounds, which appears to

offer all that is necessary for this part in the Droughtmaster calendar. It is good that there are many members around to help make the Futurity the success that it is. The 40th anniversary means a lot to me. From 1986 onwards, I was either showing the Droughtmaster cattle or judging cattle. I judged Small Breeds, Tropical, and Interbreeds. I attended Assessment and Judging schools, ﬁnding out as much as I could about all facets of the cattle industry. I was Breed Captain for the Droughtmasters at the Exhibition for well over twenty years, making sure the breed was well promoted and the exhibitors were happy. Peter and I also helped pay for the shed at FarmFest to further exhibit and promote the Droughtmaster breed. It’s good to see so many people now involved with the Futurity and promoting

their cattle, and also the youth coming through. They’re learning the right way to present their animals so that when they go to the shows, they don’t feel like newbies. They can show off their Droughties to their best. We’ve had many good advisers and good judges, and I think it’s evolving the way a show should. We’re involving more children now as schools expand, and that’s a good idea. In 2015, I was honoured with the award of life membership of the Droughtmaster Stud Breeders Society, for which I am very proud. I was also happy to have the opportunity to serve on the Droughtmaster Board from 2001 to 2005, giving me a better insight into the breed and that part of it.”

SUNNY VIEW STUD “When we made the decision to have the Futurity show, the board said, ‘Well, okay, it’s your idea. You wanted to have the show, so you can be the judge.’ I judged in 1986, 1996, 2006 and 2016. The original intention was to have a closed house type of show with no outside audiences, people, side shows, horses running around or outside noise. And that’s what it’s been for the past 40 years. It did go through a period where it got exceptionally competitive, but now that we’ve moved to Toogoolawah Showgrounds and high schools are more involved, it has relaxed to what it was probably intended to be in the ﬁrst place.

My greatest satisfaction at the start was that it worked. No other society was running that sort of thing. Futurity was uncharted territory. It was set up not just for young people but for older people too. During the 1980s, we had quite a lot of interest from retired business people and older people who wanted to get involved in the breed. I really enjoyed seeing the older people, as much as the younger people, turn up to show an animal and get involved in activities within the breed. I think if I had known 40 years ago that it would still be going today, I would think it’s a dream. It still is a dream. I’ve gotten a lot

of pleasure out of it. Some of those faces that were at the ﬁrst Futurity are now the older people around the ring, and many are competent breeders. I’m so thankful for the support we’ve had because nothing will survive without that. Val Evans, Margaret Wilson and I, we’re like the last three musketeers, the last three standing. Everybody else is not around. And now we like to see younger people standing up, giving their time, and they are. We just sincerely hope that there’s another generation there to keep on going when this one fades away.”

BALCARA DROUGHTMASTERS “One of my proudest Futurity moments is the ﬁrst one in 1986 because my husband (the late Neil Evans) and I won with Narooma Capricorn. There were 68 cattle nominated and 20 studs there, so it was very exciting. The most cattle we’ve ever had was 191 in 2007 and 36 exhibitors. And as a matter of fact, that was the last showing that my husband attended

because he passed away in June, just after that, so he got to see Futurity at its absolute highlight. In 2021, we had 49 exhibitors and 186 head of cattle. We’ve had some marvellous showings there of cattle, lots of different people, and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

NEXT GENERATION A 500-kilogram Droughtmaster steer isn’t your typical school project – and that’s the point. As part of the 40th Droughtmaster Futurity celebrations, Droughtmaster Australia put the call out for a steer donation for the inaugural School Steer Competition. Ianbrae Droughtmasters, Conondale, delivered a 500-kilogram animal straight from the steer paddock, and the challenge to students from four southern Queensland schools to get creative to turn it into real dollars for their ag programs. Warwick State High School (SHS) took top spot, and after interviewing students, it became clear a second prize was in order. Ianbrae answered the call again with semen straws from the Ianbrae AI tank, won by Maleny State High School.

Warwick (SHS) students developed a paddock-to-plate plan backed by their local supply chain, securing sponsorship to feed the steer to a heavier weight, process it locally and sell it through a butcher. They also organised a “guess the weight” fundraiser at the Warwick Show, with proceeds supporting their ag program. More than a competition, it was a deliberate investment in education and capability building. Students got a rare opportunity to engage with the beef supply chain in a

practical way and considered how they would manage, market and add value to a commercial animal, just like they would in real world industry decisions.

“The students that attend the Droughtmaster Futurity are young adults that want a career in the beef industry, so the opportunity for these students to be involved with a tropical breed and network with different sectors of the beef industry will beneﬁt the students and the Droughtmaster breed well into the future.” Droughtmaster Australia President Steve Farmer echoed Paul’s sentiments, adding that he was impressed by the students’ strong planning skills and adaptability. “The maturity and self-conﬁdence of the students really stood out,” he said. “They were able to pivot their plans when they

The win has sparked real excitement for Warwick State High School students, but teacher Amanda Coy said the biggest impact will come from the learning ahead. Students are gaining practical experience in nutrition, growth management and the supply chain and potentially even marketing and selling the ﬁnished product. “And we’re only at the start of that journey, and the learning opportunities are potentially endless,” Amanda said. For Brian Amedee, Warwick State High School Head of Department Science/Agriculture, it’s been a joy watching the students embrace the experience. “We’ve already seen them become more invested in the school agriculture program,” he said.

Maleny State High School, awarded second place and semen straws, adapted their plan to suit the steer. They partnered with local butchers and restaurants to market it within the community. Teacher Vanessa Duffy said the experience helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and what’s outside of those four walls. “It creates a real-world connection… and builds passion for agriculture,” she said. The semen straws will also boost the school’s breeding program with improved genetics. Beyond the competition, the Futurity gives students real exposure to the industry – from meeting producers to seeing the range of career paths on offer – helping shape the next generation. As Paul reﬂected, the students attending today are the future of the breed. “The opportunity for these students to be involved and network across the industry will beneﬁt both them and the Droughtmaster breed into the future.”

FARMFEST REPORT

DROUGHTMASTER VOLUNTEERS CONTINUE STRONG PRESENCE AT

FARMFEST 2026 FARMFEST 2026 ONCE AGAIN provided an excellent opportunity to showcase the Droughtmaster breed, with dedicated volunteers working throughout the event to welcome visitors, answer questions, and promote the many beneﬁts of Droughtmaster cattle. The Droughtmaster shed attracted strong interest across the threeday event, with producers, industry stakeholders and members of the public stopping by to learn more about the breed. The welcoming atmosphere, informative displays and passionate volunteers helped create a valuable platform to engage with both existing and prospective breeders. A highlight of the event was the cattle judging, where Oakmore Park, Marylands S and

Alma Droughtmasters proudly represented the breed in strong tropical classes against quality cattle from across the region. In the Tropical Junior Bull class, Oakmore Ziaire secured an impressive 4th place, while Oakmore Yellowstone placed 5th in the Tropical Senior Bull class. Both bulls demonstrated the performance, temperament and adaptability for which Droughtmasters are renowned. The female classes also delivered pleasing results. Oakmore Sentimental 682 achieved 3rd place in the Tropical Junior Female class, with Oakmore Melissa 665 following closely behind in 4th place. Competing against strong entries from several tropical breeds, both females showcased

the quality and consistency of the Oakmore Park breeding program. While ribbons are always rewarding, FarmFest remains much more than competition results. The event continues to provide an important opportunity to promote the Droughtmaster breed, connect with producers and strengthen relationships within the beef industry. A special thank you goes to our dedicated volunteers who generously gave their time to represent the breed: Ray White (Marylands), Katie, Jack and Jenny Simmonds (Marylands S), Inga Hayes and Lindsay Philp (Sevenell), Sharon and Greg Harms (Oakmore), Cameron and Stan Sorely (Alma), and everyone else who contributed to another successful FarmFest.
