PRESIDENT’S REPORT “ THEY COME FOR THE CATTLE BUT STAY FOR THE PEOPLE”

IT’S AN HONOUR to present my first President’s Report for Droughtmaster Australia. In stepping into this role, I’ve been fortunate to witness just how deep the roots of this breed run not just in the paddock, but in the hearts and lives of the people who stand behind it.

The past year has given me the opportunity to travel, connect, and reflect on what truly sets the Droughtmaster community apart. It’s often said that people come for the cattle, but they stay for the people and that couldn’t ring truer after this past 12 months. We’re a breed Society, but more importantly, we’re a community bound together by shared purpose, values, and friendship.

Across the country, from saleyards and show rings to field days and school programs, I’ve seen a breed that’s not just thriving but one that is supported by people willing to lend a hand in the tough times and raise a glass in the good. It’s something that has always been a hallmark of our Society, and it’s never been more important than in the challenging environment many producers have faced this past year.

While the broader cattle market has shown some volatility driven by seasonal variation, shifting processor grids, and international trade pressures Droughtmaster breeders have remained steady. We’ve seen signs of stabilisation in some regions and renewed buyer confidence in others, but through it all, our cattle have continued to prove their worth. Functional, fertile, and fit-for-purpose, Droughtmasters are the kind of cattle that get the job done and that’s reflected in the growing interest we’re seeing in both stud and commercial sectors.

This strength hasn’t happened by accident. It’s the result of decades of selective breeding, good management, and more recently, an increased focus on performance data and measurable progress. Under our newly launched strategic plan, Data. Growth. Legacy., we

are sharpening our focus on what will drive the breed forward.

This strategy doesn’t just look good on paper it’s already delivering results. Through projects like the Mort & Co/JBS and Nolan’s feedlot trials, Beef Information Nucleus (BIN) and Repronomics, we’re collecting robust, independently verified fertility and performance data that’s reinforcing the breed’s credibility with both commercial producers and processors. These long-term investments are ensuring we’re not just keeping up, but leading.

But Data is only one pillar. The Growth we’re targeting is evident not only in the increasing number of Droughtmaster females on the books and the growth in overall Society membership, but in the spread of our influence across new regions and enterprises. From Queensland through the Northern Territory to Western Australia, and throughout New South Wales and beyond as well as internationally, Droughtmasters are gaining ground and gaining trust.

And then there’s Legacy. This may be the quietest pillar, but in my view, it’s one of the most important. Legacy is about what we leave behind not just in the paddock, but in the next generation of cattlemen and women. I’ve been particularly proud of our engagement with young people over the past year with much more to come through school programs and our Next Gen community and their support of the Young Beef Producers Forum and ours of the Droughtmaster Futurity. When you see the excitement in a young person’s eyes as they parade their first Droughtmaster heifer, or ask about their ambitions you realise the future is in very capable hands.

Just as exciting has been watching new members, some from outside the breed, some entirely new to stud breeding, embrace Droughtmasters and bring fresh energy and ideas. What they consistently tell me is that while

the cattle brought them in, it’s the people who made them feel like they belong. That’s a credit to each and every one of you. Whether it’s giving advice in the yards, helping at a show, or just picking up the phone to check in, this is a breed full of good people who look out for one another.

This past year also saw us invest in new assets to promote the breed and support members. Our upgraded office is now a more professional and functional hub for member services and operations, and the addition of a Droughtmaster-branded trailer for field days, shows, and educational events is already proving to be a high-impact tool for engagement and awareness.

Looking ahead, we have plenty to be optimistic about. The upcoming spring sale season will be a great opportunity to reconnect with one another and continue building momentum. I wish all vendors and buyers every success as you showcase and select the genetics that will shape the breed’s future. These sales are more than transactions they’re gatherings of our community, celebrations of the work that happens behind the scenes all year, and a chance to catch up with mates old and new.

To the Droughtmaster Board, I want to thank you for your support, guidance, and vision. To Simon and the team in the office, your work behind the scenes keeps the wheels turning and the Society strong. Most of all, I want to thank our members. Your passion, resilience, and generosity of spirit are what give this breed its heart.

I look forward to working with all of you in the year ahead. Let’s keep growing our breed, deepening our connections, and building a legacy that will endure for generations.

See you at the next event and thank you for the warm welcome into this role.

– Steve Farmer, President

CEO’S REPORT

DATA THAT DELIVERS

OVER THE PAST 12 months Droughtmaster Australia has continued to build meaningful momentum, guided by a renewed strategic vision, strengthened by strong member engagement, and driven by a clear sense of purpose and direction. As we transition into a new strategic phase, I’m pleased to report that momentum remains strong across all areas of our breed from performance data and membership growth to national exposure and breed development.

Much of the past year was shaped by strong member engagement and steady progress under our previous strategic plan, The Next Phase. In April 2025, we officially launched our updated strategy, Data. Growth. Legacy. a plan designed to build on what we’ve achieved and lead us into the future.

Strength Through Strategy

Our updated strategy provides a forward-looking foundation while staying true to the values that have long defined the Droughtmaster breed.

• Data continues to be a critical driver of breed advancement. The Society remains firmly committed to the Beef Information Nucleus (BIN) and Repronomics projects, both of which have been extended for another four years in partnership with MLA. These long-term initiatives continue to deliver independently verified fertility and performance data, enhancing the accuracy of BREEDPLAN and strengthening the breed’s genetic reputation.

The BIN project remains a cornerstone of our development strategy. While short-term financial results have been impacted by seasonal and market variability, the project remains in a strong net-positive position, both financially and in terms of long-term genetic value.

A highlight this year was our Taroom field day, which brought together producers, researchers and industry stakeholders to discuss BIN and Repronomics outcomes in a practical, onthe-ground setting. Members were able to see firsthand how the data is collected, interpreted, and applied with

excellent engagement and participation on the day.

• Under Growth , we continue to work toward our strategic targets of 750 members and 40,000 registered females. Growth also means broader national reach, new partnerships, and an expanding commercial and stud presence across Australia.

• Legacy speaks to preparing the breed for future generations. We’ve deepened engagement with schools and ag programs, including a paddock-to-plate initiative at Maleny State High School, support for the Droughtmaster Futurity, and sponsorship of the Young Beef Producers Forum. These programs ensure Droughtmaster remains relevant and visible among the next generation of beef producers.

Sales, Shows & Society Activities

Our calendar remains busy and vibrant. Over the past 12 months, Droughtmaster Australia has delivered or supported a broad range of events, including the Ekka, AgQuip, the Steak Eating Competition at the Norman Hotel, National Bull Sale, Roma Bull Sale, National Female Sale, Commercial Female Sale, Toowoomba Feature Show, and the Futurity.

A major milestone this year was also being the Feature Breed at the 2025 Toowoomba Royal Show, which included both stud and commercial components, including an integrated feedlot and carcass competition. This event provided data feedback to breeders and allowed members to showcase the breed’s commercial strength and carcass quality. At the time of writing, a second feedlot and carcass competition is currently underway in partnership with Nolan Meats further reinforcing our commitment to performance-based evaluation and market relevance.

Strategic Investment in Assets & Member Support

As part of our ongoing commitment to organisational strength, we’ve invested in infrastructure that supports our members and raises our profile.

This includes upgrades to our office facilities, ensuring the

Australia

space remains professional, welcoming, and fit-for-purpose – a long-term asset for the organisation and its members.

We’ve also acquired a Droughtmaster-branded promotional trailer, jointly funded with the Droughtmaster AgQuip Committee to serve as a versatile and high-impact resource at events, schools, and breed promotion activities. These investments reflect our commitment to visibility, connection, and long-term member value.

Member-Focused Progress

We remain focused on helping members access the tools and insights needed to future-proof their breeding programs. This includes keeping BREEDPLAN participation affordable and continuing education around data capture and utilisation.

Of course, none of this happens without our members. The ongoing support, input, and passion of our members is what powers the Society forward. Sharing data, attending events, exhibiting cattle, or simply advocating for the breed - your efforts are what continue to define and elevate the Droughtmaster breed.

Acknowledgements & Looking Ahead

I would like to thank my team Leigh, Carley, Jacinta, and Korrina for their professionalism, dedication, and care throughout another active and successful year. To our Board, led by President Steve Farmer, and to our Company Secretary Michele Galagher, thank you for your leadership and strategic guidance.

Looking ahead, the next 12 months will bring more opportunities to grow, connect and deliver on our strategic goals, from the upcoming spring bull sales, to continued MSA analysis, school engagement, and ongoing investment in performance data.

Thank you for your continued support in the Droughtmaster breed and in the Society. I look forward to working with all of you as we build on the strengths of our past and shape an even stronger future together.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP BRIAN AND YVONNE HECK

A 1998 advertisement in the local newspaper for the Gympie Handling School caught Brian Heck’s eye, sparking 27 years of Heck family service to the breed society, members and the Droughtmaster breed.

WITH THEIR THREE young children in tow, Brian and Yvonne first attended the Gympie Handling School to ‘see what it was all about.’ The young family was looking to establish a Droughtmaster breeding program and immersed themselves in the knowledge shared by Droughtmaster Australia members.

Brian and Yvonne joined Droughtmaster Australia in 1998, purchased two females at the Droughtmaster National Female Sale, and established their hugely successful enterprise at Glastonbury Creek, Bryvonlea Droughtmaster Stud.

They were, and continue to be, passionate advocates for the Droughtmaster breed, seizing every opportunity to promote it. Brian and Yvonne and their children Leanne, Tennille and Joshua, went on to run the Gympie Handling School from 2017-2020, providing invaluable learnings for up to 140 attendees.

Brian recalls the Gympie Handling School with fondness, noting the many friendships established with fellow breeders and the opportunities to learn from those well-respected in the industry. In particular, the revered late Noel Perry, who shared his knowledge on Female Selection.

The Heck family has enjoyed much success with the Droughtmaster breed over the years. Among some of their most exciting milestones was the sale of Bryvonlea Elisha to Mungalla Droughtmasters for $55,000, the second highest sale price at the 2005 Rockhampton National Bull Sale. The family

enjoyed another second highest sale price in 2018 with Bryvonlea Rolleston selling to Huntly Droughtmaster Stud for $52,500; and have topped the FAB Bull Sale at Gracemere a few times over the years with a record for Bryvonlea Wallace in 2022. Brian, Yvonne and their children were very familiar faces in the show ring, competing in various judging and show events since 1999 – taking home the royal blue more than a few times.

Brian attributes much of the family’s accomplishments over the years with the support he’s received from Droughtmaster Australia, members and fellow breeders, including Doug Haigh from Haigslea Droughtmaster Stud, Colin Blanckensee from Pine Valley Droughtmasters, the Hicks Family from Billabong Droughtmasters, and the late Droughtmaster Australia Chief Executive Officer Neil Donaldson who passed away in 2022.

Yvonne and Brian Heck from Bryvonlea Droughtmaster Stud receiving their Life Membership at the Droughtmaster National Female Sale, presented by Steven Farmer, Droughtmaster Australia President, and Brownyn Betts, Director South East Zone.

“Neil was a great man who really helped us, especially in the early days when we were starting out with the breed,” Brian said.

“It has been a pleasure to serve the society in many roles over the years as the society has helped us a lot through our time.”

For nearly three decades, Brian and Yvonne have served Droughtmaster Australia and its members with exceptional dedication and distinction. Brian has held many roles with Droughtmaster Australia including South-East Zone Director and organiser of the Gympie Droughtmaster Feature Show. The couple’s unwavering commitment to the breed and its members has been acknowledged with the prestigious honour of Life Membership at Droughtmaster Australia.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP BRUCE WILSON

‘If you do it the right way the first time, you don’t go wrong.’

THERE’S FEW IN the Droughtmaster community who haven’t benefited from the wisdom of the late Bruce Wilson. His Life Membership to Droughtmaster Australia is a fitting tribute for a man who was a great advocate for the breed and mentor to hundreds across the Society since 1990.

While the Life Membership was decided in mid-2024, Bruce tragically passed away on October 29, 2024. Bruce’s wife, Jeanette ‘Netty’ Wilson accepted it in his honour.

Netty said receiving the Droughtmaster Australia Life Membership posthumously was a deeply meaningful honour for the family, celebrating his lasting impact on the breed and its community.

“Bruce would have been absolutely floored,” Netty said. “It would have made his day. To have his accomplishments honoured like that is just tremendous.

“He was so dedicated to the Society – and he always loved to go into the office and annoy the girls, that was a highlight,” Netty laughed.

Growing up in Brisbane with a pony in his backyard, Bruce’s love for livestock never wavered. Former colleague and friend Ashley Stevens spoke at Bruce’s funeral, recalling the day 23-year-old Bruce pulled up on his two-stroke motorbike at the Veterinary Science Farm in Pinjarra Hills in 1976, declaring he’d ‘heard there was a job going.’

Applications had closed but Ashley asked Bruce what else he could

do – ‘I’m bricklaying at present, but I can ride a horse and I’ve done Pony Club and more’, Bruce replied.

So that was that. Bruce was appointed to the Beef Cattle Unit which provided research and facilities for the tuition of veterinary science students. He spent many years educating others and established several friendships, including his long-term mentor and mate, Ray Phillips, from Sunny View Droughtmaster Stud. Bruce went on to found the successful Valley-View Droughtmasters, and as a keen horseman, established stockhorse stud, Valliview.

He served as a classifier for Droughtmaster Australia, a role he carried out with immense pride and dedication. Bruce had a deep

understanding of the Standard of Excellence and was a staunch advocate for their preservation. He was committed to helping other members appreciate their importance and his words continue to resonate among members today. A fellow breeder recently shared with Netty that when Bruce classified his cattle, he told him which ones to keep and which to sell if he ever had to.

“This gentleman said, ‘I wrote them down and last year when things were dry I kept the ones Bruce said and sold the rest’,” Netty recalled with pride.

Bruce was pivotal in helping establish the Gympie Handling School and was a judge at several major Droughtmaster feature shows. He also enjoyed many highs in the ring over the years, including Grand Champion Female at the Ekka.

While the stud’s show success brought him great pride, Netty said Bruce gained the most fulfillment from helping others, particularly the next generation.

“People would come up to him and ask for advice and he was just so knowledgeable on breeding lines that he’d be able to help them straight away,” Netty said.

“Bruce would just draw people in and make friends with them – that’s just what he did.”

Bruce Wilson’s dedication to the Droughtmaster breed, commitment to upholding the Standards of Excellence, and

his efforts to educate and support fellow members make him a truly deserving recipient of Life Membership. This honour is a heartfelt tribute to the impact he made and the legacy he leaves behind.

QUALITY PAYS:

THE DROUGHTMASTER STEERS THAT MADE THEIR WAY INTO THE US PREMIUM ORGANIC MARKET

WHEN 264 DROUGHTMASTER

STEERS walked off The Garden Station in the Northern Territory and commanded premium prices in the US organic market, they proved something every cattleman knows but struggles to quantify: quality pays. The herd’s outstanding average MSA Index of 59.58 at Thomas Foods International didn’t just smash industry benchmarks - it showed exactly how smart producers are cashing in on America’s hunger for premium organic beef.

The timing couldn’t be better. With trade winds shifting and international buyers getting pickier about what ends up on their plates, Australian producers need results they can bank on.

The numbers that tell a premium story

The data from this consignment tells a compelling story of quality and performance. With an average liveweight on arrival of 557.61kg and an impressive dressing percentage of 58.77%, these Droughtmaster

steers delivered substantial carcass weights averaging 327.68kg. But it’s the eating quality metrics that truly set this group of steers apart.

An MSA Index of 59.58 significantly exceeds industry averages, with 97% of the cattle achieving MSA grading - an impressive consistency that premium export markets demand. The top performer reached an exceptional MSA Index of 64.83, showcasing the breed’s potential for superior eating quality.

“These results demonstrate what we’ve been saying about Droughtmasters for years - they’re not just hardy survivors, they’re premium performers,” said Simon Gleeson , CEO of Droughtmaster Australia. “When you see 97% MSA grading with an average index approaching 60, you’re looking at cattle that can compete in the world’s most demanding markets.”

The MSA Index is more than just a number - it’s a predictor of eating quality that correlates directly with consumer satisfaction and

discerning US organic sector, these metrics translate into competitive advantage and market access.

The long game pays off

Andy Hayes from The Garden Station attributes the success to long-term breeding decisions rather than short-term management tricks. “We don’t really know why they performed so well,” Andy said. “They’d been mustered with helicopters, which did a great job without stirring them up, then they had about a 30-kilometre walk through some rough country to get back to the house.”

“I think a lot of it came down to breeding. We’ve been buying good bulls for over 20 years, and it’s starting to pay off now,” he explained. The Garden Station sources their bulls primarily from Western Queensland Droughtmaster properties, focusing on animals that can handle the challenging terrain of the MacDonnell Ranges.

“We’ve got big hills - lots of them. We’re right in the middle of the MacDonnell Ranges just out of Alice [Springs], and there’s a lot of up and down walking,” Andy noted, emphasising the importance of structural soundness in his breeding decisions.

The Garden Station’s involvement with Droughtmasters began nearly three decades ago. “When we bought the place 30 years ago, there were very few Droughtmasters around here. We bought our first mob in ‘97 - some heifers out of northwestern Queensland - and we haven’t looked back.”

Meeting strong U.S demand amid supply gaps

The success comes at a crucial time for Australian beef exports. “There’s been strong demand from the US for a while. Tariffs haven’t affected us yet - they still need to eat meat in America. I’m hoping the tariffs will work in our favour,” Andy noted, reflecting

Petar Bond , beef livestock manager at Thomas Foods International, echoed the sentiment but pointed to mounting logistical and competitive challenges. While U.S. demand for premium, organic products remains stable and strong, Petar said supply consistency is where Australian producers fall short. “Everyone wants to send cattle at the same time - often due to weather constraints like heat, flooding or feed availability. That causes big gaps in supply, which is the biggest complaint we hear from overseas buyers.”

And although Australian beef enjoys a solid reputation for quality, Petar cautioned against complacency. “We’re not the only players in the game,” he said. “The U.S. also imports from Brazil, Argentina, and others - often at a lower cost. That price difference can put us on the back foot, even if the quality is in our favour.”

For producers like Andy, that means staying ahead of the game with strong breeding programs and consistently high standards.

Better

bulls, better beef.

As a long-time livestock buyer and beef production manager, Petar knows a good animal when he sees one: “To me, a well-bred animal will naturally perform well - it’ll grow well, fatten well and grade well. The grading should be the result, not the focus. There are good and bad examples in every breed, and Andy’s cattle are a good example. He spends time and money on selecting the right bulls, and it shows.”

Andy agreed: “If you’re a stud breeder - breed good bulls. If you’re a steer breeder - choose good cattle,” he candidly advised. “There are good Droughtmaster herds all over Australia now. They’re versatile and fit in anywhere.”

As the breed’s versatility appeals to producers across Australia’s varied climates, and international demand grows for premium, traceable protein, Australian Droughtmaster producers are well positioned to capitalise on growing global opportunities.

DROUGHTMASTERS PROVE COMMERCIAL WORTH AT TOOWOOMBA ROYAL SHOW

The 2025 DROUGHTMASTER FEATURE SHOW marked an exciting milestone with the launch of its Feedlot Trial and Carcass Competition, held in conjunction with the Toowoomba Royal Show. This addition to the traditional stud cattle program drew participation from 10 exhibitors across North, Central and South East Queensland who collectively entered 349 purebred Droughtmaster steers. Designed to collect valuable MSA data and demonstrate the exceptional performance of Droughtmasters under commercial conditions, the competition showcased the breed’s capabilities to industry stakeholders while addressing marketplace perceptions.

“We’ve noticed some negativity towards Droughtmasters in the marketplace, and the Society is working to address that,” explained Don McConnel of Mt Brisbane Pastoral Co. “This feedlot and carcass competition demonstrates that Droughtmaster cattle perform exceptionally well on feed, meet required carcass specifications, and deliver excellent eating quality.”

The competition entries spent 113 days on feed at Mort & Co Grassdale Feedlot before processing at JBS Dinmore, where they were evaluated for weight gain, carcass traits, and MSA index. Results were announced at the Virbac Drinks with Droughties at the Moat House where over 100 attendees gathered to hear guest speakers Brett Campbell from Mort & Co, Caitlyn Barton from JBS and Amy Collins from the UQ Meat Judging Team speak about the results.

“The quality across the pen was very good with excellent temperament and the overall performance of the pen was above the average for Grassdale Feedlot for the same feeding period, with 70% of the pen achieving an ADG between 2.0 & 3.18kg per day,” said Brett Campbell, Mort & Co.

Caitlyn Barton, JBS, said, “The results demonstrate the breed’s ability to perform in the grain fed beef production system. The traits of performance in both the feedlot aspect and within carcass traits going forward will only become more and more relevant as the Australian beef sector continues to expand its processing and reliance on feedlot-finished cattle”.

These qualities were exemplified by the McConnel family, whose entries delivered standout results across multiple performance metrics. They dominated the awards, taking first place in Individual Weight Gain, Individual Carcasses, and the Pen of 6 Weight Gain categories, while placing strongly across numerous other classes. Their success is particularly meaningful as they returned to showing at Toowoomba Royal for the first time in 25 years.

“We’re very proud of our results,” said Don. “When you see who we were up against - some very good names who’ve done well in competition - you want to benchmark yourself against the best in the industry. To perform as well as we did was very surprising, but it proved to us the commercial relevance of our herd.”

The Mt Brisbane Droughtmasters story began in the mid-1980s when John and Carli McConnel ,

unable to find bulls with the temperament and quality they required, began purchasing Droughtmaster stud females with quality bull calves at foot. The stud was officially registered in October 1985, and today the operation runs approximately 50 stud cows alongside 450 commercial breeders on their 10,000-acre property.

“Nowadays, we’re looking for softer, easy-doing animals - more earlymaturing types to get the weight on quicker. Fertility in our females is a big focus, then early maturity and that soft body type that handles our conditions better.”

Particularly meaningful for the McConnel family was sponsoring the Individual Carcasses category, named the EJW McConnel Memorial in honour of Don’s late father. “Dad was a self-confessed carcass junkie. We used to do carcass comps all over South East Queensland because he really enjoyed them. We wanted to do a memorial for Dad because he was the one who instilled the love of carcass comps in all of us.”

Don praised Droughtmaster Australia for organising the competition: “We should commend them for being proactive in getting data on the commercial attributes of the animals. For a lot of us, this is the bread and butter of our operations. It’s great to see effort being put into the commercial side.”

The extensive data collected throughout the competition will provide valuable benchmarks for producers and further strengthen the breed’s position in the commercial cattle sector.

GOOD GOLLY! JUNIOR HEIFER CLAIMS SUPREME EXHIBIT AT TOOWOOMBA ROYAL FOR GLENLANDS D

IN A RARE and impressive feat, Champion Junior Heifer, Glenlands D Good Golly Miss Molly, was awarded Supreme Champion Exhibit at the 2025 Toowoomba Royal Show where Droughtmaster was the feature breed.

Exhibited by Glenlands D Droughtmasters , Good Golly Miss Molly claimed the top honour ahead of the Grand Champion Bull, Sylvan Springs Underbelly, exhibited by Sylvan Springs Droughtmasters , and the Senior Champion Female, Glenlands D Elke.

It marked the first time in more than two decades that Glenlands D had taken a team to Toowoomba, making the win even more significant.

“That was the first time we’ve taken cattle down to Toowoomba in over 20 years,” said Darren Childs of Glenlands D. “It’s usually a little early in the season for us, which makes it hard to have cattle ready and still continue on with the Central Queensland

show circuit. But Toowoomba was the feature show this year and we wanted to support it.”

The Junior Champion Heifer’s victory, not only over the Senior Champion Female, but over the Grand Champion Bull came as a pleasant surprise: “Being named Supreme over the bull was surprising - it doesn’t happen often,” Darren admitted. “But we’ve always thought a lot of her. To have that recognised in the ring was pretty special.”

Good Golly Miss Molly’s special moment in the ring was backed by generations of thoughtful breeding and a pedigree that reads like a blueprint for Droughtmaster excellence.

As a full sister to Glenlands D Esprit, who claimed Grand Champion Female honours at the 2024 Nutrien Ag Solutions Stud Cattle Championship at Beef Australia, she represents the consistent quality of this line of cattle. The same flush also produced Everest, the breed’s record-setting bull who sold for $320,000, and English Rose, who established a new female record at $70,000 - nearly doubling the previous benchmark set in 2007. Her maternal connections extend the

genetic goldmine even further, with her mother being a maternal sister to Fancy Free, who commanded $80,000 at the Beef Genetics in Focus Sale at Beef 2024. “There’s certainly some depth in the pedigree,” Darren understated.

Already enrolled in the Glenlands IVF program and carrying her first calf, Good Golly Miss Molly represents both present achievement and future potential.

“She’s something special - great skin, beautiful natural softness, capacity, femininity, and strong feet and legs. She’s exactly the type of cow we’re trying to breed.”

Plans are underway for her appearance at Ekka, Brisbane, where she’ll continue building on this momentum as a cornerstone of the stud’s donor program.

With over 45 years of Droughtmaster breeding under their belt, Glenlands D is now a third-generation stud committed to producing structurally sound, low-maintenance, high-performance cattle.

“We believe in the breed’s future. Droughtmasters suit where the industry is heading - they’re adaptable, productive, and efficient”.

NEXT GEN CONTINUES to deliver valuable opportunities for young people in the beef industry, with 2025 already seeing strong engagement and growth across its key initiatives.

In November, Next Gen awarded three sponsorships to attend the 25th Annual Young Beef Producers’ Forum (YBPF) – a highly regarded event dedicated to education, networking, and leadership for emerging industry professionals. The 2024 recipients were Tyler Aspinall , Tomas Flohr, and William Chugg

Next Gen has confirmed it will once again offer sponsorships for up to three young producers to attend YBPF 2025. Applications will open in August, with sponsorship covering event registration, accommodation, and a contribution toward fuel expenses. Details will be shared via Next Gen’s social media channels.

Next Gen’s fundraising efforts have also reached new heights. The 2024 Next Gen Auction raised an impressive $10,300, making it the group’s most successful fundraiser to date. These funds will go

directly toward creating more opportunities for young people in the Droughtmaster community.

Following this success, the Next Gen Auction will return at the upcoming Droughtmaster National Bull Sale ‘Drinks with Droughties’ event. Attendees can expect a mix of returning favourites and exciting new auction items.

To stay informed about upcoming opportunities, events, and initiatives, follow Next Gen on Facebook and Instagram. For event collaborations, ideas, or general enquiries, contact the committee at nextgen@droughtmaster.com.au.

Next Gen’s volunteer committee continues to grow and welcomes new members who are passionate about supporting the next generation of the beef industry. Those interested in joining or contributing are encouraged to reach out and get involved.

Reflecting on the experience Tyler Aspinall said, “Attending the 2024 Young Beef Producers’ Forum was valuable and insightful. The opportunity to hear from expert speakers within the industry and panel discussions broadened my perspective and understanding on a number of important emerging topics such as sustainable practices, emissions, market trends, government policies and innovative perspectives.”

DROUGHTMASTER AGQUIP COMMITTEE SERVING UP A ‘TASTE TEST’ TO GROW THE BREED

The aroma of sizzling steak sandwiches has become synonymous with Gunnedah’s annual AgQuip Field Days, but behind the BBQs are teams of volunteers cooking up more than just lunch. At the Droughtmaster shed, ‘shed captain’ Lynn Heyman and her husband Mark have turned a once-dormant site into a delicious front for breed promotion, community engagement, and youth development.

SINCE TAKING THE REINS in 2016, the Heymans have coordinated everything from steak sandwich sales, breed displays, and donation coordination, supported by a loyal team of volunteers and help from local schools and community groups. “It started because the site hadn’t included steak sandwiches for a few years,” Lynn explained. “As long-term roadhouse operators, we saw an opportunity to help out whilst also promoting the eating qualities of the Droughtmaster breed. We put our hands up and got to work.”

Turning steak sandwiches into studs

What began as a simple volunteer gig flipping steak sandwiches has evolved into something far greater. The committee has since channelled its annual presence at AgQuip

into delivering tangible support for regional communities across an enormous territory, stretching from the Queensland border to Tasmania and South Australia.

The Droughtmaster AgQuip Committee set out to grow membership and raise funds to promote the breed - and they’ve done just that. From infrastructure upgrades to education initiatives, every dollar raised helps lift the breed’s profile and support its expansion across Australia.

Their most visible achievement is a purpose-built BBQ promotional trailer - co-funded through AgQuip proceeds and completed in late 2024. Conceived by Mark Heyman , the trailer was built to provide a mobile promotional opportunity for the breed which was functional and striking.

“One side is equipped for cooking and the other showcases merchandise and promotional materials,” explained Mark. Complete with bold Droughtmaster artwork, it’s a show-stopping mobile presence that tells the story of the breed wherever it travels.

But the committee’s investments extend far beyond equipment. Perhaps their most impactful initiative is their support of Bowraville Central School’s agricultural program. When agriculture teacher, Lori Wilson approached them with a proposal to establish their own Droughtmaster herd, the response was immediate and generous.

“They had some funds, and we matched their contribution,” Lynn explained. “Now they’ve got a

Droughtmaster show team and have been showing them locally.”

The investment has transformed the school’s agricultural program. Lori inherited the school’s existing stud program when she arrived, but after changing direction and working with loaned Droughtmaster heifers from Canco Droughtmasters in 2023, she and the school set their course with confidence. “We found our love for the Droughtmaster breed,” she enthused. “They were so good with the kids. We just loved having them.”

The committee’s contribution, matched with the school’s funds, enabled the establishment of Bawrrung Droughtmaster Stud Working with breeders like David McCabe at Breffni Droughtmaster Stud and Bowman Park Droughtmasters , the school now maintains six head, including a cow with a heifer calf, and students are actively competing in local shows.

The committee’s contributions also include $5,000 for the Aussie Hay Runners during drought and building long-standing partnerships with schools and local clubs.

Driven by breed pride

The crew behind the counter is just as impressive as the menu. Lynn’s son, Todd Heyman who helps coordinate the site, describes the operation as a community-powered effort driven by shared passion for the breed.

“We’ve got a guy with decades of experience, Gordon Fletcher - an ex-butcher who lives in Tenterfield - who helps us prepare meat and camps with us for the event,” said Todd. “Another regular is Earle Ball , a breeder from Hell Creek on the Mid North Coast. We’ve also got Ross Austen and partner Leone from near Grafton, and Noel Warne and his sister Christine who originate from Casino - they’re a group who turn up year after year.”

From commercial breeders to passionate supporters, the team volunteers their time to showcase the versatility of the Droughtmaster breed, support youth in agriculture, and drive long-term growth for the industry. Their collective effort not only ensures the smooth running of the site, but also strengthens the Droughtmaster breed’s presence and reputation within the broader agricultural community. Throughout the event, the team consistently presents themselves as excellent ambassadors, engaging with exhibitors, fostering connections, and promoting the breed with pride and passion. And after hours, their spirited catchups at the Courthouse Hotel are a testament to the strong bonds that make this group not just effective, but truly enjoyable to be part of.

All meat is sourced from Nolan Meats in Gympie, long-time supporters of the breed, and cattle on-site are supplied by both local stud producers and commercial breeders.

“It’s a taste test for the breedand it passes every time. We’re really proud of our product, so we’re putting our time and money into showcasing

Droughtmaster beef at one of Australia’s largest agricultural field days, and the feedback has been fantastic,” said Todd.

This year, StockLive, an online auction platform, will be a guest at the Droughtmaster shed, facilitating both on-site and remote livestock and machinery sales.

“The Droughtmaster AgQuip site is all about catching up with some friendly faces,” said Mark. “So come by, say g’day, and get yourself the best steak sandwich at AgQuip”.

The Droughtmaster AgQuip Committee’s purpose-built BBQ promotional trailer, completed in late 2024, is a mobile hub for breed promotion, community connection, and top-quality steak sandwiches.

GLENLANDS J COMMANDS TOP PRICES IN DEBUT APPEARANCE AT NATIONAL FEMALE SALE

In a remarkable debut appearance, Glenlands J stud set the Droughtmaster National Female Sale alight, commanding the two highest prices and shattering the 2024 record by $13,000 at an otherwise subdued market.

THE CENTRAL QUEENSLAND operation, owned by Jason and Carissa Childs , sold 16-month-old Glenlands J Graceful for $34,000 to Comiskey Droughtmasters of Maleny. Their 17-monthold Glenlands J Golden Girl achieved $23,000, purchased by first-time buyers Double F Droughtmasters from Clermont.

“This was the first time we offered cattle in the sale,” said Jason Childs. “I just wanted to try something different and nominated three specially selected heifers.” “As a multivendor outlet this female sale has been the pinnacle of the breed for such a long time.”

The sale reported a 73 percent clearance rate, with 122 head sold of 167 offered. The average price was $4,861, with approximately 40 lots selling for $3,000 so buyers were able to access quality genetics for an affordable price.

Jason noted the significance of the top-selling heifer in their breeding program. “The top-priced one was my pick - very feminine, very correct. She was only the second Bateman daughter ever sold,” he said, referring to the sire Glenlands Bateman. “The first one went to Sommer Stud Droughtmasters at the Beef Australia 2024 auction and made $57,500.”

For Jason, the validation from industry peers proved particularly meaningful. “We’ve all got a plan, an individual path for your breeding program, but the real acid test is when your product is out there for open competition. I must admit I was concerned about the market, how the sale would unfold. On the day the heifers were really appreciated by the buying audience. That meant a great deal to us.”

Purchasers Steve and Sarah Comiskey of Comiskey Droughtmasters described the qualities that attracted them to the top-priced heifer. “If I were putting together a textbook female, she would be it,” said Steve. “She’s got a beautiful, very feminine head, and perfect colouring. She’s a big, strong girl with width, and obviously her pedigree is fantastic.”

The Comiskey’s plan is to join the heifer with one of their bulls and give her a natural calf before flushing her and doing some IVF. Patrick and Lynette Fry, Double F Droughtmasters , Clermont, acquired the remaining two Glenlands J heifers after unsuccessfully bidding on the sale-topper. “I think the industry recognises what Jason’s got as some of the best,” said Steve. “They seem like they’re at the top of their game, and the bidding demonstrated that.”

The sale’s total value reached $593,000, with buyers primarily from coastal and range areas between the Gold Coast and Rockhampton. Bulk purchasers included Shings Droughtmasters (eight lots, $4,500 average), Aurora Droughtmasters (six head, $3,667 average), and Claymore Cattle Company (six head, $3,167 average).

A cow and calf unit from Will and Ingrid Haviland’s Sugerland stud achieved the third-highest price at $18,000, purchased by K Team Droughtmasters of Biloela. Nine of 11 cow-calf pairs sold (82% clearance), averaging $6,611, while only one of three joined heifers sold at $4,500, and 112 of 153 unjoined heifers sold (73% clearance), averaging $4,723.

GLENLANDS D SUMMER SELECTION HEIFERS TO $16,000

YOUNG MAIDEN HEIFERS topped at $16,000 to average $6393 for a complete clearance in the Summer Selection Female Sale conducted by Darren and Helen Childs , Glenlands D Stud, Theodore, in March.

The fully integrated online fixture saw buyers from across Queensland compete for the offering of naturally and artificially bred products.

Topping proceeding at $16,000 was Glenlands D Gina (P) (Glenlands D Waco (IVF) (P) (AI)) (19-months) selling to GDL Rockhampton. GDL as agents for the Comiskey family, Comiskey Stud , Maleny. That fledgling operation took two in the offering averaging $10,000.

Two females fetched $12,000. First was the sale opener D Glamour Queen (IVF) (P) (AI)

(Glenlands D Dempsey (IVF) (P) (AI)) (14-months) going to Judi Cullen , Granite Downs Stud, Warwick. The other at the same figure was for D Gabriella (P) (Glenlands D Boundary Rider (IVF) (P) (AI)) (17-months) selling to Rowan Smith , Yangan. Rowan claimed the next lot for $10,000 securing D Gigi (P) (Glenlands D Waco (IVF) (P) (AI)) (18-months).

Samari Droughtmasters , Hughenden took four for on average $4875 while three were purchased by Les Howard , Benjamin Stud, North Aramara for on average $6333. Top of his selections at $8000 was a 20-month-old daughter of Glenlands D Do Wah Diddy (IVF) (P) (AI). Also taking a trio was Sullivan Livestock and Rural , Gympie for on average $4833 topping at $5000 twice. Taking a pair for on average $6000 was Riley McKenzie , Hamadra R Stud, Bluff.

BIDDING FEVER: HIGHLANDS DROUGHTMASTER SALE SEES RECORD PRICE JUMP

THE 34th ANNUAL Highlands Droughtmaster Sale saw a strong result, with average prices up more than $4,000 on last year, reflecting rising demand for quality genetics.

Held on March 14, the sale attracted producers from across Queensland, with 39 of 56 bulls selling for an average of $11,846 – up significantly from the 2024 average of $7,711. The event grossed $462,000 with a clearance rate of 70 percent. Postsale negotiations brought the total to 41 bulls sold at a slightly adjusted average of $11,512, with an overall clearance of 73 percent, nearly matching last year’s 74 percent.

Battle for the top bulls

The Barton family of Huntly Droughtmasters from Comet topped the sale with their polled sire prospect, Huntly Endorse, which sold for $32,000 after intense bidding. The successful purchaser was Libby Ingram of Skye Droughtmasters near Alpha, who outbid Lenny Bode from Percol Plains participating online.

The 26-month-old Huntly Endorse, sired by Huntly Stable, weighed 860 kilograms with impressive scans showing a 140 square centimeter eye muscle area and P8 and rib fats of 11mm and 8mm.

“He’s a very correct, soft bull with good growth for age which is exactly what I was looking for,” said Libby, who plans to use him with second-calf heifers at their property ‘Skye,’ between Alpha and Tambo.

Sam Barton of Huntly Droughtmasters noted, “He’s an exceptional carcase bull with excellent meat quality, softness, and balanced structure.”

Coming in close second at $30,000 was Vale View M Legend, offered by 13-year-old Mac Smith of Vale View M Droughtmasters. The heavyweight champion of the sale at 925kg, this 25-month-old poll-horned bull was purchased by Shane and Wendy Perry of Strathfield Droughtmasters and Perry Pastoral Co from Clermont.

Two bulls shared third place at $28,000 each – Huntly Escort from the Barton family and Oasis Smokin Joe from the Geddes family’s Oasis Droughtmasters

in Rockhampton. Huntly Escort was purchased by Terry and Katherine Piggot of Aldinga Droughtmasters, while Lenny Bode secured Oasis Smokin Joe online.

Volume buyers strengthen sale’s bottom line

Elders Studstock agent, Anthony Ball , noted that recent rainfall had boosted buyer confidence, and a shift to prioritising quality over quantity led to the significant increase in average sale price.

“The strong competition for standout bulls drove our average up by nearly $4,000 compared to last year, despite similar clearance rates,” Anthony explained.

Four volume buyers, each purchasing four bulls, also provided solid support throughout the catalogue. John Atkinson of Glenavon Droughtmasters, Yaamba, secured his picks at an average price of $10,250. The Bode family from Percol Plains, McKinlay, participated via StockLive and averaged $22,000 for their selections. Dale Sibson averaged $8,250, while Jumba Holdings averaged $5,000.

The sale saw strong results across multiple studs, with Vale View, Manumbar selling 6 of 7 bulls at an average of $16,166; Oasis, Rockhampton clearing all 3 bulls at an average of $18,000; and Huntly, Comet selling 7 of 9 bulls at an average of $16,142. Strathfield, Clermont achieved a perfect clearance with all 8 bulls sold at an average of $10,125.

“For a relatively small sale, we had remarkable geographic diversity among bidders, with buyers from North Queensland, Western Queensland, the Longreach district, locally around Clermont, and down in the Burnett,” said Anthony. “The widespread interest speaks to the quality of the offering.”

As has been tradition for the Highlands sale, all vendors donated $50 from each bull sold. This year the recipient of this donation will be the Royal Flying Doctor Service. A total of $2050 was raised for the service.

MUNDA REDS BULL SALE DEFIES MARKET PRESSURE WITH COMPLETE CLEARANCE

IN A YEAR marked by challenging conditions for Western Australia’s cattle industry, the fourth annual Munda Reds Droughtmaster onproperty bull sale at ‘Glencoe’ Gingin delivered an unexpected triumph with a 100 percent clearance rate. The sale, featuring WA’s largest individual bull catalogue, saw all 133 bulls find new homes despite pre-sale concerns about tough seasonal conditions in northern pastoral regions.

“We were probably expecting prices and clearance rates to be down, but we ended up with 100% clearance, which was incredible. That definitely wasn’t expected,” said Olivia Wright , stud manager at Munda Reds. “Prices were a little softer than last year, but that’s across the board - the market’s been down for a while. It’s not an easy year for anyone selling bulls.”

The sale achieved an overall average of $7,045 across the 54 Breedplan-recorded stud bulls bred at ‘Glencoe’ and 79 commercial bulls from Mundabullangana station in Port Hedland. While stud bull values felt pressure with an average of $8,537 (down $2,972 on last year), commercial bulls saw their average jump $709 to $6,025.

Dane Pearce from Nutrien Livestock, who travelled from Queensland to conduct the auction, praised the quality of the offering and was impressed by the strong results. “100% clearance is a huge achievement, especially after tough years and a challenging cattle market,” he said.

“It was a very even and consistent line of bulls from start to finish, and right through the sale, we saw solid buying support from a long list of return buyers and a few new ones. Buyers were clearly chasing and prepared to bid up on the bulls with high morphology and PP.”

Queensland’s High Country Droughtmaster stud principal Paul Laycock became the day’s top buyer, securing two consecutive bulls for $24,000 each - Munda Iron Fist and Munda Ironjack.

“To me, they’re very commercially sound and carry all the attributes we need,” Paul explained.

“They’ve got the muscle pattern, the growth factor - especially considering the conditions they came through. Things have been quite tough in Western Australia, but their structure, confirmation, and body type are perfect.”

Paul, who has consistently purchased from Munda Reds since their first sale, had high praise for the stud’s approach to bull preparation. “We’ve had 100% success with all the bulls I’ve bought from there. We struggle to get the same success when bulls are over-prepared and overfed. They’re doing a great job of preparation, and that’s given us great longevity in the bulls we get.”

Olivia believes the sale’s success lies with their loyal bulk buyers. “We had four key clients who took out a significant number of bulls - including Rob Jowett from Warrawagine Cattle Company, who bought 33. Without those buyers, the bulls that usually hang around can be harder to shift.”

Warrawagine Cattle Company continued its strong support of the Munda Reds program, with Jowett investing more than $300,000 at an average of $9,667. For the fourth consecutive year, he also secured the Telethon charity bull for $22,000, with all proceeds donated to the charity.

The charity element has become a fixture of the Munda Reds sale. “We’ve always sold the first commercial bull of the sale and donated the proceeds to Telethon,” Olivia explained. “It’s an amazing charity doing really important work for kids and families in WA.”

Other significant buyers included Richard Gratte from Ethel Creek, Marillane, and Walagunya stations, who purchased eight bulls including one stud bull at $15,000, and Joe Paull from Davis River Pastoral, who secured 10 bulls at an average of $6,500.

Their support is a testament to the relationships and trust the Munda Reds team have built over the years.

The strong results reaffirmed Munda Reds’ position as a prominent provider of Droughtmaster genetics for Western Australian cattle operations, combining quality, performance, and charity involvement in a successful annual event that continues to defy market pressures.

FIELDHOUSE DROUGHTMASTER SALE RESULTS TELL A

Wide-ranging seasonal conditions across the state’s northern pastoral regions shaped targeted purchasing strategies at the Mutton family’s third annual Fieldhouse Droughtmaster On-Property Bull Sale at Jurien Bay in April.

The sale presented 88 wellprepared, morphology and DNA tested rising two-year-old bulls, featuring pedigrees that showcase the family’s significant investment in leading interstate and WA Droughtmaster genetics.

“We’ve worked hard over many years to build a program that delivers consistent, high-performing bulls suited to northern pastoral conditions,” Mr Mutton said.

The current conditions among the stud’s pastoral client base told a tale of two seasons – those fortunate enough to receive rainfall stocked up on quality herd bulls, while returning buyers facing drier conditions opted not to purchase this year.

This resulted in a modest buying register of mainly pastoral buyers from the Murchison, Gascoyne, Pilbara and Kimberley, with additional support from the Central Midlands region.

“It was alright considering the season,” Mr Mutton said. “We knew heading in that some of our regular buyers were doing it tough and would be sitting out this year, but we were pleased to see strong support from those who had received a break.”

With reduced competition, buyers could be selective. This resulted in some strong prices throughout and excellent value bulls, but a fair portion of the catalogue was overlooked.

The Nutrien Livestock selling team led by auctioneers Tiny Holly and Dane Pearce sold 57 bulls for an overall average of $5,228 – back $1,465 on the stud’s 2023 sale where it recorded a total clearance of 93 bulls at a $6,693 average.

Mr Holly said the bulls presented very well, but the sale was tougher than expected. “The bulls had great muscle shape and definition and were in good condition, ready to go on and do the task at hand,” he said. “We are always driven by seasonal conditions in the station country, and this year was another where demand was down due to the season.”

Lyndon Cattle Trust, represented by Sean D’Arcy and manager Scott Keilor, paid the $16,000 top price for lot four, Fieldhouse BC7 #195, a homozygous double polled bull sired by Glenlands D Axel. The July 2023-

born bull weighed 636kg, measured 35.5cm scrotal circumference, and tested 75 pc morphology.

Mr D’Arcy said their new sire would be used over heifers in their nucleus program. “He’s got length and muscle and is a bit of an outcross for us with the Glenlands Quartermaster blood,” he said.

The $11,000 second-highest price went to repeat buyers Polly Edmunds and son-in-law Dave Batty from Hooley Station, who purchased Fieldhouse BC7#130, another Glenlands D Axel son.

“He looks like a bull,” Mr Batty said. “He has a big hindquarter, strong legs and a tight sheath. He should breed some good steers.” Hooley Station secured a total of four bulls averaging $6,250.

The De Pledge family of Yanrey Station, Carnarvon, was the volume buyer with 12 bulls at an average of $4,167. Joe De Pledge, who first introduced Droughtmasters to WA station country in the mid-1970s, was buying for his son Cob.

“We were looking for well-muscled bulls with good bone and structure, shorter hair types, and good temperament,” Mr De Pledge said. “We like the breed because they have good temperaments and are short-haired, which means they can handle tropical conditions better. They also suit both the domestic and live export markets.”

Other significant buyers included GoGo Station, Fitzroy Crossing, acquiring 11 bulls averaging $4,273; Winning Station and Wyloo Station, Carnarvon, each purchasing five bulls; and Mardathuna Station, Carnarvon, averaging $6,250 for four bulls.

With many northern producers still navigating dry conditions, the family remains focused on maintaining strong relationships with buyers and building a breeding program responsive to the north’s ever-changing climate.

“We’re thankful to everyone who supported the sale again this year,” Mr Mutton said. “We look forward to seeing how the bulls perform in the paddock.”

With the $16,000 top-priced bull Fieldhouse BC7 #195 (PP) were Mollie D’Arcy and her father Sean D’Arcy and Scott Keilor, Lyndon Cattle Trust, Nutrien Livestock agent Richard Keach, Fieldhouse stud co-principal Ken Mutton, and Damian Halls, Nutrien Livestock.

NORTHERN BIN PROJECT: BUILDING THE FUTURE OF DROUGHTMASTER GENETICS

The Beef Information Nucleus (BIN) initiative is one of the most ambitious genetic research programs in Australian agriculture - a genomic reference population established through the MLA Donor Company and co-funded by major breed societies to improve information for economically important traits.

The Northern BIN project, focusing on tropical breeds, is part of this broader initiative that is delivering more accurate estimated breeding values (EBV) through the incorporation of genomic information. The Northern BIN project has purchased approximately 3,500 steers over its decade-long operation. Since genomic EBV accuracy - typically between 30–45% - is directly dependent on the size of the reference population, the expansion of this dataset through the BIN project has led to significant gains, with some sires now achieving greater than 90% accuracy based on BIN-generated data.

“We showcase the breed societies’ steers at the field day, complete with their performance data, while their half-sisters remain at the research stations, where we track their full production and reproductive performance across their lifetime,” said Dr. David Johnston , Principal

Scientist at the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU).

“We are recording the progeny very intensely on those key bulls to firstly grow the reference population data for Droughtmaster BREEDPLAN,” he explained. “The accuracy on those EBVs is a direct reflection of the size of the reference population.”

Multi-breed evaluation and technology

The project’s other major development is multi-breed EBV capability. By running cattle from different breeds together under identical conditions, researchers are establishing genetic relationships needed to align evaluations across breeds.

“At the moment, a plus 20 for the 600d wt EBV across the breeds would be meaningless, but in the future, it would allow commercial producers to compare bulls across the breeds,” Dr Johnston noted.

The project continues to evolve, incorporating technologies like Ceres smart ear tags equipped with GPS and accelerometer technology. These devices communicate with low-level satellites to upload data on animal location, behaviour, and movement, using CSIRO’s eGrazor software technology to interpret accelerometer data into animal behaviour characteristics.

The project is also tackling methane emissions, with Professor Ben Hayes and his team at the University of Queensland using Greenfeed units to measure actual methane output from cattle. This work builds on earlier research at Trangie, which found that animals with lower feed intake also tend to produce less methane - a win-win for productivity and sustainability.

Across the board, data collection is thorough. Researchers are capturing everything from 400and 600-day weights to carcass scans, structural scores, and Meat Standards Australia (MSA) grading. Meat samples are even sent to the University of New England for detailed lab analysis. Recent results for Droughtmasters are promising: 86% of the steers at Spyglass and 79% at Brian Pastures graded in the top MSA boning groups (1-8), showing strong eating quality.

With funding secured through to 2028, the project continues seeking new Droughtmaster genetics to broaden its reference population. If you’d like to be part of the project and contribute genetics to help broaden the Droughtmaster reference population, get in touch with the Droughtmaster office. Your involvement will help ensure the continued improvement of genetic evaluation tools, strengthening the breed’s competitiveness in Australia’s tropical beef industry.

WHAT A COLD BEER TEACHES US ABOUT FROZEN EMBRYOS

What could a cold beer and a frozen embryo have in common? Turns out, quite a lot. From brewing to breeding, the parallels might surprise you – and maybe even change the way you think about that next sip of your favourite cold one during this sweltering Australian summer.

BRUNO SANCHES is the Vice President of Operations at Vytelle, a precision livestock company reshaping how cattle producers worldwide optimise their herds. Originally from Brazil, the now U.S. based Bruno shares four ways Vytelle has revolutionised the embryo freezing process to now average a 48% success rate globally on frozen transfers with just a 4% gap between its fresh transfers at 52%, in comparison to its competitors with a 50% success rate on fresh, and 27% on frozen.

1. Like beer left too long in the freezer

We’ve all been there. You put a bottle of beer in the freezer – and promptly forget about it until two days later. By that time the water inside the beer has solidified, expanded, and you’ve got an exploded mess on your hands. It’s the same concept for embryo cells, with their composition of

80% water. The water inside the cells can expand to the point the cells explode so that when the embryo is thawed and transferred to the recipient cow, that embryo is dead already. It’s an all too familiar scenario experienced by many cattle producers using frozen embryos in the in vitro fertilisation (IVF) process.

2. Fat embryos, overfilled beer bottles

Imagine an embryo as a beer bottle. The glass bottle is the embryo’s membrane, made of lipids and proteins. If you overfill that bottle with lipids – like overfeeding an embryo – it becomes a ticking time bomb during freezing. When you freeze, you first remove water from the embryo, just like ensuring no excess pressure in a beer bottle. But if the “bottle” is packed with too much fat, the water can’t fully escape, bounces back, and the embryo “explodes.”

Vytelle takes a different approach (a proprietary media solution for embryo protection, the Direct Thaw method, and a hormone-free IVF process) – creating lean, healthy embryos that can handle the freezing process without bursting. It’s about quality over quantity, like brewing a perfect batch instead of mass-producing a subpar one. Competitors might focus on making more embryos, but if they’re overfed and unhealthy, they won’t survive the freeze. Vytelle’s method ensures embryos are built to last, just like the perfect brew stored at the right temperature.

3. Timing makes all the difference

Popping a beer in the freezer on a whim? Sure, why not? Popping an embryo in a recipient cow at any point in the cycle? Not so simple. Fresh transfers require a synchronisation of the uterus of the recipient with the age of the

Bruno Sanches, Vice President of Operations at Vytelle at a recent industry event.

embryo. A seven day old embryo requires a precise environment of a seven day pregnancy, meaning the cow must have been in heat seven days prior. Frozen embryos represent a transformative

advancement in cattle breeding, particularly crucial for countries like Australia with vast distances and complex logistics. As Dr. Sanches explains, the technology allows embryos to remain viable for years, giving producers unprecedented flexibility in their breeding programs - from collecting eggs multiple times before a large transfer to aligning with recipients’ natural cycles. Using Vytelle’s Direct Thaw method, which mirrors the simplicity of thawing semen, producers can efficiently handle and transport embryos while maintaining export eligibility. This strategic approach enables producers to optimize their breeding programs by transferring grade 2 embryos fresh while preserving grade 1 embryos for future use, ultimately allowing for more concentrated calving periods and better coordination with recipient availability. Perhaps most importantly, it eliminates the logistical risks associated with fresh embryo transport over long distances, which Dr. Sanches identifies as a gamechanging advantage for largescale operations in expansive territories. Vytelle’s proprietary media for the embryos means the company has frozen embryos that can be successfully thawed and transferred up to 80 days maturation. A game changer.

4. The beer-friendly guide to transferring frozen embryos There’s a bit more to Vytelle’s Direct Thaw (DT) method than cracking open a cold one – but the similarities remain.

Step one: Air thaw the embryo for 10 seconds in a room temperature of 60-80°F (15-27°C) – like pulling a beer out of the fridge.

Step two: Warm it in a 95°F (35°C) water bath for 30 seconds – think of it as letting your frosty brew settle just right.

Step three: Load into a warmed transfer gun and implant – time to serve it up, perfectly prepped.

Vytelle’s DT method - and the proprietary media that protects the embryo in the thaw stage - reduces handling and improves success rates.

CATTLEMEN CUT THEIR COSTS WITH DROUGHTMASTERS

Droughtmasters at Mt Brisbane: bred for performance with minimal input.

WHEN IT COMES TO CATTLE

, cost of production is just as important for profitability as the cents per kilogram returns.

And the Droughtmaster breed’s fertility, feed conversion and resilience equates to less inputs and lower costs from conception to carcass.

While the farmgate price per kilogram is often the first figure flagged by producers and industry, Droughtmaster Australia CEO, Simon Gleeson, says the Droughtmaster’s competitiveness comes from it costing less to produce.

“Looking at the overall economics of breeding cattle, rather than just the end result - Droughtmasters achieve good weight gains in the paddock, and they also do well in feedlots. They are very efficient in terms of feed conversion, therefore don’t require as much time on feed,” he said.

“And they don’t have issues with pink eye and ticks, which means less handling and managing of the animals, and have less long-term requirements due to longer survivability.”

Droughtmasters are tropically suitable cattle without a hump height, and their adaptability to varying conditions means less feed intake in dry times.

Simon says their temperament also offers further advantages for producers and processors.

“The breed is very strict on culling anything that has bad temperament, that has an impact on grading on meat and also production point of view and that plays into the economics and profitability,” he added.

Terry Nolan is a director of Nolan Meats, an export beef processing company and feedlot

And while Terry doesn’t have a breed preference, he says having a Bos indicus element in your herd when running cattle in the north of Australia is essential.

“In a tropical or arid environment some cattle do better, so while we are breed agnostic, we can’t do much about where we live,” he said.

“I think that if you want to have a truly productive beef herd in South East Queensland, right through to up towards the Gulf, you need an infusion of Bos indicus

“You apply less chemicals to tropical adapted cattle, so they handle the burden of cattle tick or buffalo fly on those things better than some of the other breeds.”

Terry cautions producers on chasing consumer fads and marketing directives over

Shane & Sarah Hauschildt Tallegalla

“Do we want to be bringing that particular breed from the coldest environment of Australia, or do you want to bring that particular cheese from the other side of the world,” he said.

“I think we’re naive to think that we can just take a particular breed, plunk it down in a certain part of the globe and expect it to perform when it’s not adapted to the environment.”

For Don McConnel of Mt Brisbane Pastoral Company, Droughtmasters can’t be matched for either their easy care and average daily weight gain.

Don runs 2,000 Droughtmasters on 10,000 acres in the Brisbane Valley, in an 800mm rainfall area.

The breed’s resilience was a saving grace for Don during the most recent drought period, allowing him to retain breeding stock and manage cash flow.

“When you see a paddock that usually feeds 120 steers carrying 250 cows through, and those cows come back at 88% pregnant, you can really start to

realise these cattle can handle tough conditions,” he said.

The joining period was kept at the usual length to avoid a flow-on effect of late calves the following year, and the dry cows were rejoined and sold into a strong herd rebuilding market.

“With the fertility and hardiness of the cattle, we picked up numbers again straight away. One blip, and we were back to full production the next year,” Don said.

On the other end of the spectrum, this year has been one of the wettest summers on record at Mt Brisbane, which hasn’t come without its own hurdles,

but has meant a “tremendous” grass growing season.

Droughtmaster steers at Mt Brisbane have achieved daily average gains of more than 1kg/day on grass, with the aim being 0.6kg to 1kg/day for the fattening stock and between 0.3kg and 0.5kg/day in the younger growing stock in the summer.

Recent seasonal conditions had pushed the young stock up to 0.8kg/day, and early pregnancy testing has shown a 99% conception rate in heifers.

While the target market for Mt Brisbane Droughtmasters is a 460kg feedlot entry weight, Don says the breed gives the option to fatten and send straight to processors, as well as sell as lighter cattle if the price is right.

“We’ve got an animal that we find the market wants, so we don’t have any issues getting them into feedlots or abattoirs in terms of hump height, we keep that content low,” Don said.

His Droughtmasters recently achieved an above trial average of 2.2kg/day on feed in the Mort and Co feedlot trial, while last year his heifers won all the placings in the Kilcoy carcass

competition, leading in both weight gain and carcass assessment.

And Don isn’t guessing when it comes to cost of production, knowing exactly what it takes to get the job done.

He operates on less than $100/ head treatment cost for the life of the animal (including labour and compliance), and a further $130 of hay and supplements to get to feeder weight after weaning.

“They handle the ticks and buffalo fly really well…we don’t dip here. It is just a couple of drenches a year to get them through...it is an easy care, low maintenance animal that still performs very well,” Don said.

“Weigh scales are in every crush now and every time the cattle go through the yards they are weighed so cattle have to perform.

“The number of cattle on feed is going to grow in the next few years and we need to be looking at that to make sure we have the right article and can attract the premium prices.”

Further north, fertility is front of mind for Jack Stewart-Moore at ‘Dunluce’, Hughenden.

Having always run Droughtmasters at the home block, the purchase

of a second property at Mt Surprise came with a herd of Bos indicus cattle, which are now being bred to Droughtmasters.

Seasons can be challenging in the far north, and getting a calf on the ground and a cow in good enough condition to go back in calf is the first hurdle for Jack.

“We get more fertility out of Droughtmasters in terms of rebreed, and they are still tropically adapted,” Jack said.

“The other huge advantage is the large percentage of polls…even in the crossbred herd we are 90% polled calves coming through the cradle, and dehorning can be a huge setback for the calf.

The Droughtmaster is not only producing more calves, but also opening up plenty of market options for the offspring.

“The main market we are aiming for is the 400 to 420kg feeder steer, that is our golden spot,” Jack said.

“They can handle the ticks but also get into the flatback market for whatever feedlot they are going into, which at the end of the day means more cents per kilogram, so it makes sense for us.”

In September 2024, Nolan Meats processed 257 purebred Droughtmaster ca le averaging an MSA index of 59.50 with the highest animal grading 63.47 placing it in the top 1%. This outstanding result compared against the average national MSA Index of 57.52.

MYOSTATIN MATTERS: WHAT DROUGHTMASTER BREEDERS NEED TO KNOW

The Droughtmaster Office has received a growing number of enquiries over the past 12 months regarding myostatin and its relevance to the breed. In response, we’ve compiled the following Q&A with industry expert, Harry Stewart to help clarify what Droughtmaster breeders need to know.

AS THE BEEF INDUSTRY continues to embrace genomic tools to drive productivity, the myostatin gene has become a focus for many breeders looking to improve muscle development and overall carcass traits.

In this Q&A, we speak with Harry Stewart, Northern Beef Genomics Specialist at Neogen Australasia –Australia’s largest genomics testing facility, providing advanced DNA testing solutions for the agriculture, animal protein, and food processing industries – about what the myostatin gene is, how it functions, and what it means specifically for Droughtmaster breeders.

With a growing interest in using genetic insights to make more informed breeding decisions, Harry breaks down the science and practical implications of managing myostatin variants in composite herds.

Q. What is myostatin and why does it matter in cattle breeding?

Harry: Myostatin is a hormone produced by muscle cells in all animals, including cattle. The main job of the myostatin hormone is to control muscle growth and influence the production of proteins, which control muscle development. In cattle, a mutation (or change) in the myostatin gene makes the myostatin gene inactive, which leads to increased muscle mass, particularly in areas like the hindquarters. This is also often referred to as “double muscling”.

Q: What makes myostatin an important gene to look at when it comes to beef production?

Harry: Myostatin is of particular interest in beef breeding, especially for breeds known to carry deleterious variants, as these can negatively affect both production and reproduction traits. As a result, animals with a myostatin mutation may reduce the overall productivity and profitability of a herd.

Q. How common are myostatin variants in the Droughtmaster breed?

Harry: In a 2025 study of 2,188 Droughtmaster animals in AGBU’s Northern Repronomics Project, Dr Kirsty Moore reported the frequency of the NT821 allele at 0.08 (8%), and the frequency of the F94L allele at 0.01 (1%).

Droughtmaster is a composite breed, and given no myostatin variants were detected in Brahmans in the recent AGBU study, it is likely

NT821 and F94L were introgressed into the Droughtmaster breed from Bos taurus ancestors, where these mutations have been reported previously. Selection for more muscled animals is likely to have led to increased frequency of NT821 and F94L in the breed over time.

Q. Are some myostatin variants more of a red flag than others when it comes to Droughtmasters?

Harry: NT821 is the most common myostatin mutation found in Droughtmaster. It is a “loss of function” mutation that results in increased levels of calving difficulty, lowered fertility, and longevity. On the other hand, F94L has not been associated with reduced fertility and dystocia, and has positive impacts on increased muscle mass and carcass yield in Limousin. But the AGBU study did not find any effect of F94L in Droughtmaster.

Q. Could myostatin play a role in some of the traits Droughtmaster breeders are selecting for, like muscling or adaptability?

Harry: The myostatin NT821 mutation in cattle is a genetic variant that affects muscle growth. It’s a deletion in the myostatin gene, which normally inhibits muscle development. When present in two copies (homozygous), it leads to a “doublemuscling” phenotype, characterized by increased muscle mass and reduced fat. However, it can also be associated with potential drawbacks, like increased birth weight and calving difficulty.

The AGBU study concluded that the allele frequency of NT821 in the Droughtmaster breed, along with the literature reports of increased calving difficulties associated with NT821, indicate that breeders should monitor and manage the presence of the NT821 myostatin variant.

Q. Are there any real-world gains to be made by selecting for certain myostatin variants?

Harry: By testing for myostatin within a herd, breeders can identify animals that are carriers of myostatin variants, enabling more informed breeding and selection decisions.

Carriers – animals with one copy of the mutation – often display improved muscling compared to

unaffected animals (those with no copies), but to a lesser degree than affected animals. Affected animals, sometimes referred to as “double-muscled,” can result when two carriers are mated. Unaffected animals do not carry the mutation and therefore cannot pass it on to their offspring.

Q. Could selecting for certain myostatin traits come at the cost of things like calving ease or fertility?

Harry: Further research is required on the impact of myostatin variants in tropically adapted cattle breeds. Research in Bos taurus breeds suggests the increase in meat yield may be advantageous, but needs to be balanced with the risk of calving difficulties and reduced female reproduction.

Q. How can Droughtmaster breeders test for myostatin variants in their herd?

Harry: Droughtmaster breeders can test for myostatin variants in their herd through DNA testing services. Neogen provides myostatin testing as an inclusion in the Droughtmaster Myostatin Bundle, which includes genomic profiling (GGP TropBeef 50K), parentage verification, horn/poll status, Pompes E7, and Myostatin (5 variants including NT821 and F94L). Or breeders have the option to order the Myostatin test as a standalone test (6 variants including NT821 and F94L).

Q. Once producers get their myostatin results, what should they keep in mind when making breeding decisions?

Harry: By testing for myostatin, breeders can make informed decisions to effectively manage myostatin variants within their herds. Identifying NT821 carriers allows them to avoid mating two carriers together, thereby reducing the risk of producing affected (double-muscled) offspring.

Q. What’s your top advice for Droughtmaster breeders new to genomic testing?

Harry: With all genomic tools having the capacity to make more informed selection decisions, it is key in being able to extract the value from the information delivered. It is important to ensure that breeders have a clear breeding objective to help ensure they can effectively utilise and incorporate genomic data into their breeding program.

VIEW FIELD ISSAC CLAIMS VICTORY AT DROUGHTMASTER FUTURITY

An 18-month-old bull bound for the Droughtmaster National Bull Sale later this year claimed the top honours at the 2025 Droughtmaster Futurity, showcasing the bright future of the breed and its dedicated breeders.

VIEW FIELD ISSAC , exhibited by Shane and Sarah Hauschildt of View Field Droughtmasters, Tallegalla, was declared Champion Bull and Grand Champion Exhibit at the Droughtmaster Futurity held at Toogoolawah Showgrounds on March 1. The competition attracted 107 nominations of stud animals.

The homozygous polled son of Billabong Kosmo and High Country Kimber immediately caught attention with his exceptional structure and breeding.

“He was a standout from the start - a very nice little bull calf from a first-time mum and the first calf from that sire,” Shane Hauschildt explained. “Both his dam and sire come from strong dam lines - in fact his mum currently has another bull calf at foot who is five months old and already better than this one.”

At just 18 months old, Issac weighed 700 kilograms, demonstrating exceptional growth-for-age that caught judge Renee Rutherford’s attention.

“He’s a bull with good growth for age, and his structural correctness was very sound, and he had a very honest type of preparation for longevity,” Miss Rutherford said. “View Field Issac

showed great temperament and was very well shown.”

Associate judge Amy Collins , who earned her judging opportunity after winning the junior judges competition the previous year, was equally impressed with the champion.

“View Field Issac is a credit to his breeders Shane and Sarah Hauschildt, and a brilliant representative of the Droughtmaster breed. A lovely type of bull who was commended on his ideal conformation, structural soundness and overall eye appeal,” Collins said.

The Grand Champion is now bound for the Droughtmaster National Bull Sale in Rockhampton this September, where his superior genetics will likely attract significant interest.

Youth participation, a good indicator of breed’s strong future

If the standard of the junior entrants at the Futurity was any indication, Miss Rutherford says the industry’s future is in good hands.

“I was pleased with the number of younger exhibitors; there must have been 50 under 18 years who participated in the event,” she said.

“It is so important to have them coming through with us to help educate them and keep the breed going forward and staying strong.”

Toogoolawah State High School epitomised this youth success, taking out the title of Most Successful School at their first show of the season. Nine students and five animals represented the school, with many first-time participants.

“Half the kids had never done a show before, so it was great to see them do so well,” said teacher Angela Lynch . “They’d only had four weeks to prepare after coming back from holidays, so they worked really hard and it paid off.”

Despite limited preparation time with animals that had spent summer untouched in the paddock, the students excelled in both judging and parading categories.

“It’s more about the team than the individual - that’s the heart of our show program,” Lynch added. “They were absolutely thrilled. It was a great reward for all their effort.”

The Futurity event, held from February 28 to March 1, continues to be a highlight on the show calendar, drawing quality entries that demonstrate the diversity and strength of the Droughtmaster breed across Queensland.

DROUGHTMASTERS MAKE THEIR MARK AT FARMFEST 2025

FarmFest 2025 kicked off with the dedicated efforts of our incredible volunteers, who rolled up their sleeves for the annual Busy Bee to clean, organise, and prepare the Droughtmaster shed. Their tireless work ensured everything was set for a smooth and welcoming event, and their presence remained invaluable throughout.

This year’s event drew a steady stream of Droughtmaster enthusiasts to the shed, where visitors were treated to engaging conversations, informative displays, and the warm hospitality of our passionate members – complete with coffee and homemade cake. It was a great opportunity for newcomers and seasoned breeders alike to connect over their shared love for the breed. One of the major highlights of FarmFest was the highly

anticipated Battle of the Bulls, held on Wednesday and judged by Scottie Hann. The competition was fierce, with over 20 entries representing Brahman, Brangus, Santa Gertrudis, and Braford breeds. Oakmore Park Droughtmasters’ Oakmore Yellowstone placed an impressive 4th in the Junior Tropical Bull category, earning positive remarks from the judge for his quality and potential.

Thursday featured the Fantastic Females competition. Oakmore Granda secured 5th place in the Junior Tropical Female class, while Oakmore Wanita proudly took out 3rd in the Senior Tropical Female class – an especially competitive class with 18 exceptional entrants, mostly Brahman cow-and-calf units. Oakmore Wanita stood out with her seven-week-old bull calf, Oakmore Ziaire (sired by

Oakmore Winchester), at foot. Judge Scottie Hann praised Wanita for her style, functionality, and impressive presence as a gutsy two-and-a-half-year-old female.

Overall, FarmFest 2025 was a tremendous success. Despite strong competition, the Droughtmasters showcased their quality and held their own across all classes.

We extend our sincere thanks to the FarmFest Livestock Organising Committee, sponsors, and judge, Scottie Hann for their invaluable support. A heartfelt thank you also goes to our dedicated volunteers – Ray White (Marylands), Katie Jack and Jenny Simmonds (Marylands S), Inga Hayes and Lindsay Philp (Sevenell), Sharon and Greg Harms (Oakmore), Cameron and Stan Sorely (Alma) – and everyone else who helped bring this event to life.
