NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR It’s that time of year again, the dark autumn evenings, those frosty winter mornings, a time to wrap yourself up in the warmth of our forthcoming programme. We have an exciting artistic line up for you over the next four months, with a variety of events, new initiatives, and lots of challenging topics that will surely stir the conversations…. Too numerous to mention all, but I would like to highlight a few: Droichead Presents Drama - our new Theatre Club, an idea influenced by similar in the UK, like a book club, but talking theatre. See a show, and then discuss it afterwards. I want to bring people together to talk more about art and art practice. I want to make them feel comfortable talking about what they have seen, how it’s made them feel, what they liked and disliked, and what they would like to see again. With the support of the Creative Ireland Programme, Leanbh, our festival for children and young people returns and takes place throughout the month of October. Key elements of this festival are: enabling creativity, creating access and participation and investing in the potential artists and audiences of the future. So see a theatre piece, participate in a visual arts workshop, listen to storytelling - Leanbh will be in our theatre, our local library, and out in our schools. The visual arts programme includes a group exhibition curated by artist Dorothy Smith, featuring artists from Drogheda and East Meath, and we also launch our First Solo open call for all recent graduates in Louth and the surrounding region. The brilliant Drogheda Classical Music Programme kicks off on the 8 Sept. Once again produced by Pauline Ashwood, it is a testament to her curatorial talents that she has lined up such an exciting series of concerts for us to enjoy. December brings all the joy of the festive season, with an amazing selection of music and pantomime, brought to you by some of the best local performance groups from Drogheda and East Meath. Finally, you will notice a new addition to our programme – Voices – three short articles written by some of the artists and curators associated with this current programme. I hope you enjoy them. I hope they shed some light on why people do what they do in the creation and production of their art. On that note, enjoy this coming season, and I hope to see you at one, or even more events…

a place where anything can happen by Pat Kinevane
From a very early age - growing up in a rural village outside Cobh - I was fascinated by the idea of a stage, an audience and the exchange between both. My friends and I would rob my Mam’s curtains and sometimes my Dad’s boots and even though I was from the working class, we would pretend to be Kings and Cinderellas on top of boxes covered with old bits of lino or carpets. We pretended to be elegant, angry, happy and sometimes incredibly sad, but all the time we were having fun with our innocent imaginations. I knew even then that this thing called ‘theatre’ was a part of my love of life and my love for it grew. I began to make fully detailed stages from the cardboard boxes that our groceries came in! I made characters from paper, coloured their costumes with crayon and stuck them on to old school rulers so I could move them about. I made scenery from old hankies and greasproof paper. I even designed a matchbox- trapdoor for the villian to fall through! All the time I was having the best of play, escaping to my world of make believe.....a place where anything could happen. To this very day, I do the same. I look forward to each performance with a duty... a duty to deliver the best work I can for a generous audience... an audience that has given their time and headspace over to the show... an audience who has given me their trust to deliver the story with my fullest effort. And I try my best because I am still of a working class and humbled by that. The audience is drawn to the stage, and the exchange between it and them. And after paying for their tickets, getting babysitters or parking and all that organised, it is time for them to escape into the world of their innocent imaginations, to a place of Kings and Cinderellas and elegance and anger and sadness and joy and make believe.... a place where anything can happen. While others maybe preoccupied with cucumber sandwiches and railway cloakrooms, two minor characters from The Importance of Being Earnest are up to their necks in something else. A country rector and a governess, models of Victorian propriety in public. But in private? This is the play behind the play: a tale of blackmail, false identity and money.
From the confines of every parochial hall in Ireland, Irish Dancing champions are churned out at a massive rate. Medals and cups build up in living rooms and Riverdance swells a national pride, but the public aren’t privy to the blood, sweat and tears that pave the way to the first place podium. A coming of age story, for anyone who had a childhood passion that threatened to overwhelm their life.

Similar to a book club, it’s about bringing a group of people together to see a play, and then allowing them the opportunity to talk about it afterwards, to express their opinions, their likes and dislikes. It doesn’t matter if this is your first play, or your 50th, just bring yourself along and enjoy. So take your seat and have your say! And its great value too, 6 shows for €66. The story of a man in late 1920’s Paris. Reduced to scraping by in various dead end jobs and recounting his adventures with the characters he meets before returning to London, he finds himself sinking further into the life of the down and out. Funny and entertaining it is ultimately a thought provoking piece that shines a light on those who are unlucky enough to fall through the cracks. This powerful performance from Phelim Drew brings George Orwell’s classic to the stage with humour, empathy and wit.
Following on from the sell-out success of Underneath and Forgotten, Pat Kinevane returns with this powerful play completing the trilogy of his award winning solo plays. Homeless McGoldrig once had splendid things. But he has lost it all including his mind. He now dives into the wonderful wounds of his past through the romantic world of Rudolph Valentino. Dare to laugh at despair and gasp at redemption in this brave, bleak, beautiful production for which Fishamble and Pat Kinevane won an Olivier Award in 2016.

MOONFISH THEATRE
Sat 11 Nov | 8.00pm | Tickets €18 | €16
Thurs 16 Nov | 8.00pm | Tickets €16 | €14
An hilarious new play, set in the cracked heart of the boom, starring actress/writer, Claudia Carrol (Fair City), Rose Henderson (Fair City, Father Ted), Isobel Mahon (Glenroe, The Clinic) and Maria McDermottroe (Glenroe, Killinaskully). Selma Mae seems to have the perfect life, beautiful home, children, architect husband. However, when Carmel, her social climbing mother arrives to help her organise a party to celebrate the completion of her state-of–the–art extension, the cracks begin to show….
In 1847 the famine-ship Star of the Sea sets sail for New York. Among the passengers are those with secrets to hide - a silent maidservant, a ruined landlord, and an infamous murderer... Using Moonfish’s signature bi-lingual style, this journey comes to life as six performers blend projection, physicality, live sound effects and music to conjure the worlds of the characters on a bare stage. Based on the best-selling novel by Joseph O’Connor, this unmissable piece of Irish theatre is back by popular demand.

discover a new language through theatre by Christina Matthews
While I have worked at a variety of levels in theatre, from the national stage at The Abbey, to a community hall in Enniskillen, with top professional actors, drama college students, and a multitude in between, there is something that pulled me back to youth theatre as my primary theatrical environment. Each year at Droichead Youth Theatre I get the opportunity to watch 60+ young people discover a new language through theatre, for telling stories, for channelling creativity, and for personal development. There is something magical about working with young people who are on the cusp of forging an identity for themselves in the world, as artists and as human beings, and they present a way of approaching both art and life that is refreshing and bold. According to Jonathan Neelands, “Most actors will spend their lives trying to recapture what was instinctive, natural and raw in them when they were young and first started performing: the heart, the commitment that goes into it is uniquely youthful. It is this youthfulness, this passion and drive, that calls me back to the rough and ready joys of youth theatre creation time and time again, to delve into the endless discoveries that are possible through the medium of live, raw, unapologetic theatre. Christina Matthews is a freelance theatre maker and facilitator, and the current Artistic Director of Droichead Youth Theatre

Two hapless Irish teenagers fall victim to criminal ambition in a perfectly pitched comic-drama. Inspired by the true story of Ireland’s biggest cocaine seizure in 2007, The Young Offenders is a comedy road movie about best friends Conor and Jock, two inner-city teenagers from Cork who dress the same, act the same, and even have the same bum-fluff mustaches. Never ones to think things through, the two Irish teens steal bicycles and set off to the coast to find a bale of cocaine from a smuggler’s capsized ship. Joint winner of the Best Feature Film Award at the Galway Film Fleadh.

Set in 2013, two years after the Tahrir Square protests, director Mohamed Diab brings claustrophobic intimacy to a historic moment in this stunning thriller, set inside a police vehicle during Egypt’s 2013 street protests. One-by-one, the vehicle is filled with a variety of demonstrators, rioters and journalists, who remain in bitter conflict with one another. This critically acclaimed film has earned over 20 awards since its release.
Based on a novel and nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2017 Academy Awards, this Swedish hit is a bittersweet but charming tale of one man rediscovering himself after a devastating tragedy. Ove, an ill-tempered, isolated retiree who spends his days enforcing neighbourhood association rules and visiting his wife’s grave, has finally given up on life and plans to end it all. As World War II comes to an end, a group of German POWs, boys rather than men, are captured by the Danish army and forced to engage in a deadly task - to defuse and clear land mines from the Danish coastline. With little or no training, the boys soon discover that the war is far from over. Martin Zandvliet’s third directorial feature is a tightly focused narrative that builds considerable tension and poignancy and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2017 Academy Awards.
In this funny and observant coming of age tale from Irish novelist and filmmaker John Butler, bullied outsider Ned and macho athlete Conor are forced to share a bedroom at their rugby-mad boarding school. Their unlikely friendship takes them both by surprise as they bond over music and their desire to win a local talent competition. Ultimately, each learns the importance of bravery, loyalty, and finding one’s own voice. Starring Andrew Scott, Amy Huberman and Ardal O’Hanlon. The 2017– 18 season opens with a new production of Vincenzo Bellini’s masterpiece, starring Sondra Radvanovsky as the Druid priestess and Joyce DiDonato as her archrival, Adalgisa—a casting coup for Bel canto fans. Tenor Joseph Calleja is Pollione, Norma’s unfaithful lover, and Carlo Rizzi conducts. Sir David McVicar’s evocative production sets the action deep in a Druidforest where nature and ancient ritual rule.
Music Director Emeritus James Levine conducts the full-length German version of Mozart’s magical fable, seen in Julie Taymor’s spectacular production, which captures both the opera’s earthy comedy and its noble mysticism. Young stars Janai Brugger and Ben Bliss are the fairy-tale princess and prince, and Christopher Maltman reprises his acclaimed interpretation of the bird-catcher Papageno.
Following the rapturous response to his last opera, The Tempest, the Met presents the American premiere of Thomas Adès’s The Exterminating Angel, inspired by the classic Luis Buñuel film of the same name. Hailed by the New York Times at its 2016 Salzburg Festival premiere as “inventive and audacious … a major event.” This is a surreal fantasy about a dinner party from which the guests can’t escape. Tom Cairns, directs the new production, and Adès conducts his own adventurous new opera.
The Metropolitan Opera in New York is celebrating its 12th season of the ground breaking Live in HD programme, and with Classical Arts Ireland you can watch Opera on the big screen at Droichead.
VISUAL ARTS A PLACE TO REST I MARIO SUGHI Opening Sat 7 Oct 3:00pm | Running until Sat 19 Nov
It’s like when you sit in a coffee shop and enjoy looking at the people passing by. Some of the people capture your attention. You follow them with your eyes and you reinvent their stories. And yet the only thing you know about those people and their lives is their image standing in front of you. That is what you try to do when then you draw and paint: you try to capture and reproduce those interesting images. Nothing more nothing less, because the image seems already to have everything you need within it.

TALK
choose a job you love by Pauline Ashwood
My earliest memories include music. I was born in to a family where music was important. My mother played piano and taught music in a school in Newry and as children, my brothers and I were encouraged to learn piano. Like most children, piano practice wasn’t a priority and usually involved trying to remember everything Mum had said the previous week and then cramming scales for 30 mins before the lesson. Something stuck though, as throughout my school years I did well in music and went on to graduate with a Bachelor in Music Education from Trinity College and the Royal Irish Academy of Music. I was in my early twenties when I had my first experience of arts administration and knew immediately that it was the career for me. It often involves late nights and unsocial hours but the buzz from being at the coal face is what keeps me going. I love the planning stages and putting all the concert elements together. I love the excitement of a live performance and the anticipation of the audience’s response. I love the vibrations on the floor from the low bass notes of the orchestra. I love the delight on people’s faces during performances. I love attending the live screenings of the opera and seeing the inner workings of the opera house. I love the intimacy of the concerts in St Peter’s Church of Ireland and the post-concert analysis with the musicians. I simply love music. I am very fortunate to do what I do. When I had my first child in 2011, returning to unsocial working hours in Dublin wasn’t an option, so I looked in to re-establishing the Music Series previously run by Drogheda Borough Council. The Series gives me an outlet beyond family life. It allows me to stay connected with my former colleagues and to make new associations. As many will know, juggling family life and career is difficult but as the saying goes choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. Pauline Ashwood is the producer of the Drogheda Classical Music programme. For more information see pages 30 & 31.
