HERE COMES THE SUMMER Our summer season has arrived, and this year it is a season full of indoor and outdoor energy, with new and ground breaking initiatives… We will create pop up artist studios for Borrowed Ground in our gallery, where eleven professional artists from the North East Region will be in residence and develop new work from May to July. We want to invite you to drop in to the studios, meet the artists, and see their work. Or visit Art Share in our café, a creative reference library, a new initiative with thirty-three 45, where anybody with a passing interest can visit and browse through our collection of contemporary and historical art books. In other exciting news, we are delighted to announce we have a Theatre Company in residence for 2019. Quintessence will join us for the next 12 months with Hear Me Roar: Women, Gender and Silence, a new programme of theatre work dedicated to women’s voices and stories. And in July they will have their first outing with Boy, Girl, Repeat, an experimental work in development. Summer will see the return of summer camps for children and teenagers, our open air theatre at Oldbridge, a short theatre and film season, and a free family day out at Mellifont Abbey, Cruinniú na nÓg, supported by Creative Ireland and run in partnership with our sister arts centre in Dundalk, An Táin. For the second year running Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann will take place in Drogheda. This year, in association with Louth Arts Office, we have a very special exhibition around the Fleadh curated by fine art photographer Kate Nolan and acclaimed fiddler Gerry O’Connor, featuring musicians and singers who frequent Fleadhanna. Niamh Parsons, one of the most distinctive voices in Irish music, will get your voice Fleadh ready with a six week programme, entitled Women and Traditional Singing. And finally, if you are looking for some summer reading, we invite you to our Wee County, Big Book Club to read Skin Deep by Liz Nugent, and get ready for September when Liz will be in conversation with Dani Gill, our Literature Audience Development Officer. Throughout, we hope to see you at events, maybe participate in workshops, or if you are between the ages of 18 -25 as part of our new Youth Focus Group.

The project aims to highlight the need for dedicated studio space in Drogheda and its environs, in support of its vibrant and active community of visual artists. The project offers an invaluable communal space whereby artists can meet and work. It allows for creative and divergent thinking, encourages public engagement with various creative approaches and disciplines, and represents the quality of ideas and skills within the region. Borrowed Ground will be accompanied by a series of talks and workshops. The first will be the launch of Art Share, a creative reference library and space where artists, students, teachers, creatives or anyone with a passing interest in art can come to relax, foster ideas or just explore a cross section of contemporary and historical art books and publications. Borrowed Ground invites you to drop in, meet the artists and browse through our library. Art Share project is a non-profit, community engagement collaboration between 'thirtythree-45' and 'Droichead Arts Centre'. Steven Stapleton’s main musical outlet for close on 40 years, Nurse With Wound draws on nearly every musical genre imaginable as well as Stapleton’s eclectic taste in art, film and music to create its distinctive ‘sound’. There are now over 50 full-length NWW titles, as well as appearances and collaborations on records by artists such as Stereolab, Sunn O))), Current 93 and Larsen. Featuring an array of guest musicians, each live appearance is seen as a rehearsal for the next show, and no two shows have ever been the same. This is NWW first band show in Ireland in 10 years and a Drogheda exclusive.
Tracing one man's journey through a city in crisis, Ten Plagues charts the great plague of 1665, including its entry into Ireland through the port of Drogheda. Part torch song, part Schubert, this ground-breaking piece of music-theatre written by composer Conor Mitchell and playwright Mark Ravenhill includes a striking visual experience created specifically for the Drogheda Arts Festival by local artists Els Borghart and Declan Kelly. This award winning polemical work uses the Great Plague to talk about the AIDS crisis of the 1980’s.

Inspired by her own experience of feeling invisible on reaching her 60s, Carol Moore uses a mix of text, music and physicality to tell this empowering story of a woman who decides to take back control.

Using his inimitable way with words and his sense of “devilment” and wit, Keane creates a marvellously colourful world, which delves into the longings, hungers, fears, and foibles, of this collection of lonely country people.

Starring Luke Griffin (The Clinic, Pure Mule), Stephen Cromwell (Red Rock), Stephen Jones (Love/Hate, Red Rock) and Gerard Byrne (Fair City), Jimmy Murphy’s play tells the story of three house painters, making a meagre living, overseen by an arrogant and shifty boss who is running a small business. VOICES Theatre is not just what I do. It is who I am. From the moment I could walk and talk, I immediately had an instinct for performance and storytelling. I consumed books as if they were sweets, and wrote stories of my own, filling endless notebooks with my childish imaginative scrawls, before acting them out in extravagant homemade plays in my living room for patient parents, with coerced siblings making up my cast. Where this immediate love of all things performative came from, I am not entirely sure. It is not something I grew up with, or had modelled for me: my family are not theatrical in any way, and the closest I ever came to a theatre throughout my youth was the odd Panto and the occasional school trip to see a Shakespeare from the syllabus. Yet the fascination and love was always there, if not the skill! I was blessed to find my encouragement and mentor upon attending Sixth Form in the UK and studying Theatre for A-level. My teacher, a dedicated, exacting, inspiring ex-thespian, treated us as young theatre makers to mould as if a professional company. That training and ambition set me on the path I remain on, and have dedicated my life to, as through it I discovered myself in the thrill of creating for others. The need to connect, to understand, and be understood, has always been a hunger in me, as I think it is in all of us. It is why I always have gravitated toward theatre over film, where the audience are live and complicit in the creation of a world; it is why I direct in the physical ensemble style, where each player is equally, inextricably, and collaboratively essential to the storytelling as a unified collective; it is why I tell the very stories I do, that hopefully provoke thought and reflection as well as revel in play and entertainment; it is why the company is named ‘Quintessence’, as we strive to find the heart of an idea, narrative or character. Creating theatre is the only thing that has ever satisfied this craving in me. It is why I will always direct theatre, despite the many challenges the industry presents. And also because if I did not, I am truly not sure who I would be. Theatre is not just what I do. It is who I am. And I couldn’t be happier.

Told entirely without words through stylised movement, soundscape and mime, it follows the story of Boy and Girl from cradle to grave, exploring how that specific crucial difference assigned at birth shapes their whole social existence within the same world. An introduction to traditional singing with songstress and balladeer Niamh Parsons. This six week programme will explore the history of traditional singing, song provenance, being comfortable in your own voice, and some simple breathing exercises. Each week, you will work your vocal muscles and learn a new traditional song. Niamh Parsons has come to be known as one of the most distinctive voices in Irish music, with her earthy, sensuous voice drawing comparisons to such venerated singers as Dolores Keane, June Tabor and Sandy Denny. The great Scottish balladeer Archie Fisher said of her, “a songstress like her comes along once or twice in a generation.”

CRUINNIÚ NA NÓG SAT 15 JUNE | 1PM – 5PM | FREE VENUE: MELLIFONT ABBEY
Everyone is welcome to Louth’s Cruinniú na nÓg, a free family day out celebrating young people and children. Combining music, storytelling, visual arts, craft and heritage, as well as a few surprises. The event will showcase some of the best of Louth’s cultural gems in the beautiful setting of Mellifont Abbey, the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. Atmospheric in their own right, the abbey’s ruins will play host to a wide variety of performers and artists, coming together to celebrate and encourage children and young people’s participation in culture and creativity. There will be treasure trails, storytellers and local craftspeople making and selling their Louth-inspired wares. The day will also see the return of Draw on LOUTH, facilitated by local artists, where children will get an opportunity to put their mark on LOUTH! Cruinniú na nÓg, an initiative of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht as part of Creative Ireland, is a national day of creativity for children and young people. Cruinniú na nÓg - Louth is produced by Droichead Arts Centre and An Táin Arts Centre (members of the Creative Louth Culture Team) on behalf of Louth County Council and the Creative Louth Culture Team. The cooperation of the OPW is much appreciated. Getting there: Please note parking is restricted, there is no parking onsite. Buses will be provided from various areas around Louth. Summer is the perfect time for your kids to become The Children of Lir. This year, Droichead Theatre Camp will bring these myths and legends alive again. Bringing the swans from Lough Derravaragh all the way to their fateful end, the children will make the set and create new characters, all in one week. Lots of fun will be had with the Tuatha Dé Danann and a little rough magic.
Our week long summer camps are ideal for those budding artists out there. Week 1 - Have as much creative fun as possible, while developing lots of new skills and techniques along the way. A week of art and crafts filled with imagination and colour, working with a variety of materials. Week 2 – Delve into a world created by your imagination and ingenuity, using an array of materials and found objects. You will join the team and create wonderful large-scale 3D creations that will surprise and challenge those who take part.

KATE NOLAN SAT 10 AUG – SAT 28 SEP
This collaborative initiative between fine art photographer Kate Nolan and Louth-based fiddler Gerry O’Connor, and Droichead Arts Centre was initiated at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2018. Musicians and singers who frequent Fleadhanna are the subject matter, curated by both Gerry and Kate, while Kate photographed in a purpose built studio in the Droichead, and in the halls, bars and streets of Drogheda. The return of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann to Drogheda in 2019 will see the fruits of this labour, as the printed images will be exhibited at Droichead Arts Centre for the occasion. The title of the exhibition is a reference to the much-neglected film format and also to the traditional tune type in 12/8 time, harking back to times gone by.
