WELCOME PRESS PLAY… BE INSPIRED… Visit Droichead this season. From local artists with their first solo exhibitions, to the Abbey Theatre performing off-site at The Living Room, Sarsfields Bar, to our Leanbh Children’s Festival this October, we have a feast to delight, excite, entertain, thrill and engage you! Supporting the development of local artists is a key part of Droichead’s vision, and this season we are delighted to showcase the work of sculptor Nuala Early, and artist Eimear Murphy. This is Drogheda native Nuala’s first solo exhibition, and Eimear is the recipient of our First Solo Award for recent graduates in the North East Region. Combined with this we have an open call out for print artists to submit work for our group exhibition in November which will be curated by Dorothy Smith. The deadline is 14 Sept for submissions so still time to apply! Performance wise we are delighted to work with Drogheda based Tailtiu Theatre Company who are developing a new show for children, and will perform a work in progress as part of Leanbh. We also look forward to the return of Drogheda born spoken word artist Ciaran Hodgers who will launch his debut collection of poetry. Finally, check out page 29 where our Artist in Association SJ McArdle updates us on his year so far. As part of our Outreach programme, artists visit schools, schools visit artists, and our storyteller is in the Library and it’s all free! See page 12-14 and 18-19 for more details. Of course we also bring you the best of national and international talent, including a stellar line up in our Film Club season, the return of Theatre Club, and the Pat Kinevane Trilogy; and much, much more, leading to our December season of brass bands, brilliant choirs and sparkling panto. Droichead Arts Centre in association with the IFI Irish Film Archive are delighted to celebrate Heritage Week 2018 with two screenings of this unique film which features a host of stories made in and about Louth from 1897 to more recent times. From the earliest flickering images of Drogheda taken from a moving train by the frères Lumières in 1897, to a host of short films made by Gael Linn in the 1950s and ‘60s showing news stories all around the county.

I HAVE FOUND MY TRIBE
VOICES
I use to paint, it was something I did in the middle of rearing my children, it gave me something of my own. Later when working in Upstate Theatre I met actors, writers, set designers, project managers, people who loved their work, it made me wonder if I had the opportunity what would I love to be doing and it was a conversation with my friend Noreen and sister Kathleen I realised I’d love to study painting. I was lucky to be able to attend the Art and portfolio course in DIFE with Simon Rainsford in the afternoons, he was the first person I met who recognised the artist in me and well before I did. I only wanted to learn more about painting and hadn't planned on going to college but the idea of working in other mediums such as print, sculpture and ceramics excited me and applied to the Art and Design foundation course in Newry, initially for part time but over a summer of going backwards and forwards in my mind I jumped off what felt like a cliff edge and went full time! and from there got accepted to Duncan of Jordanstone, the University of Dundee, Scotland to the Fine Art degree course. It was where I discovered my love of sculpture and in particular stone. The strange thing is that when I opted to do the sculpture workshops I asked the sculpture tutor if I could do some stone carving, he was surprised (so was I) and had to go in search of the hammers and chisels, they hadn’t been used in a long time. College teaches you about the creative processes, finding your voice and big ideas, but not great on teaching practical skills, in 2010 when I returned to Ireland with a degree in fine art I went in search of people who could teach me more about stone carving and found stone sculptors Martha Quinn in Sligo and Stephen Burke and Richie Healy in Dublin. I have met a lot of the stone sculptors around the country and have exhibited with them in various exhibitions and feel like I am part of the family of stone carvers. When I heard Ruth Fitzmaurice author of ‘I found my Tribe’ describe the companionship and connection she feels with other swimmers I understood what she meant, I know I have found my tribe.

‘Labour of Love’ is autobiographical, each of my sculptures tell a story and each story expresses an experience I had…. “I love stone, I enjoy the process of carving and once I have removed the stone I don’t need and I am left with the basic form of the sculpture it is then I start to feel my way around the stone with my mallet, chisels and files creating the lines, flow and textures, that communicates the energy and feeling I want to express. And while I am doing this my thoughts and feelings are all about the person or experience I am trying to express. It is a slow process but allows me to bring a part of myself into the sculpture, it is a labour of love.”

Eimear Murphy is the recipient of our FIRST SOLO AWARD FOR 2018. This award gives a recent Art graduate from the North East the opportunity to have their first solo exhibition at the Droichead Arts Centre. This exhibition takes a closer look at familiar materials and shapes, questioning what an object is and how human or natural forces have influenced the design. These artworks (sculpture and drawings) are created from or inspired by textures and forms which may be found in your home and your environments. Through manipulating and colliding these materials you are invited to consider their origin and potential. VOICES Since Christmas I have been working on a song cycle inspired by the stories of Drogheda Port. Part of the reason for picking the Port is that it has been the epicentre of life in my home town for a thousand years and more, providing culture and communication and food and employment. It is tied to everything in the town and has played a role in every part of our history. But a port, by its nature, is also a link to other places, and the research has already taken my imagination from Europe and the US to the North Atlantic and the South Pacific. In a further link to the port, as part of my role as Artist in Association in Droichead, I curated the Stowaway Sessions in June with my friend Adrian Taaffe for the second year running, and once again we had two nights of sold out shows and beautiful, extraordinary music. Sincere thanks to everyone involved, especially the audience who support it. Stories are forming into songs. I performed one on LMFM back in March called "The Porcupine", based on a discovery by our local historian par excellence, Brendan Matthews. Thank you for the information shared with me already by Paul at Drogheda Port Company and Declan at Upstate. There are many research visits I have yet to pay now that I am back on my feet (literally – I fractured my ankle at Christmas). There are such rich cultural and historical sources around our town.
