From our theatre company in residence, Quintessence, with their new play, to sold out productions, award winning actors, and for the first time a visit offsite to the Abbey Theatre, there is lots of drama for you at Droichead this autumn.. Supporting the development of local professional artists is crucial to the work we do, and apart from Quintessence , we also have the premiere of Port by SJ McArdle, the culmination of his time as Artist in Association with us.. First Solo is back with young and emerging artist, Sean McGuill, finishing the year with Vivienne Byrne’s solo exhibition.. And in between a wonderful photographic exhibition, with artists from the Fleadh as subject matter by Kate Nolan.. With lots of events this season for young people, children and families, from Leanbh Children’s Festival to the Christmas panto, and workshops in our gallery and schools.. On top of our biggest film season ever, there is music from DCM, Opera from New York, and home-grown talent from our brass bands to the wonderful Kern, before ending the year with the beautiful voice of Niamh Strong. KATE NOLAN SAT 10 AUG - SAT 28 SEP
This collaborative initiative between fine art photographer Kate Nolan and Louth-based fiddler Gerry O’Connor was initiated at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2018. Musicians and singers who frequent Fleadhanna are the subject matter, curated by both Gerry and Kate, while Kate photographed in a purpose built studio in Droichead Arts Centre, and in the halls, bars and streets of Drogheda. The return of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann to Drogheda in 2019 will see the fruits of this labour, as the printed images will be exhibited at Droichead Arts Centre for the occasion. The title of the exhibition is a reference to the muchneglected film format and also to the traditional tune type in 12/8 time, harking back to times gone by while looking to the future generations of this tradition. In association with Droichead Arts Centre and Create Louth, the Arts Office of Louth County Council.

Originally from Dundalk, Sean is the recipient of our FIRST SOLO AWARD for 2019. This award gives an Art graduate from the North East the opportunity to have their first solo exhibition at Droichead Arts Centre. Recently graduated from Limerick School of Art & Design where he studied Printmaking, Sean will show both new work and pieces from his degree show exhibition, featuring a combination of mixed media prints and an installation of hydro-printed 3D objects. Sean’s work deals with themes relating to mass media and popular culture. This exhibition examines how we interact with and interpret the images, ideologies and slogans that we see daily through advertising, news, entertainment and social media. VIVIENNE BYRNE THU 5 DEC – SAT 22 FEB
This new body of work by Drogheda artist Vivienne Byrne seeks to navigate the rhythms and tempos of time unfolding. Her interest in the transitory experience, connection with the breath and impact of time on perceptions of mortality, has led her to explore methods of presenting captured moments as visual music. As part of a continuous quest to understand invisible forces, this work presents a series of mixed media installations, incorporating collaged fragments of video footage, projections and traditional drawing techniques. Inspired by the natural environment, the work is ongoing and unfolding. Our inaugural trip offsite is to the Abbey Theatre, and will include a post-show tea/coffee and chat in the Abbey Bar. Following the death of an elderly docker, his friends gather in the local pub, The Dockside, to celebrate his life. Emotions run high and a powder keg of friction comes to a head as a dockland community come to terms with the challenge of building new lives when old ways get swept away. Over the course of an evening awash with songs, sharp Dublin wit and tales of life on the Docks, hidden tensions expose fault lines in their complex relationships. After the success of Ulysses, Dermot Bolger and Graham McLaren reunite to present this new play as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival 2019.

OUTREACH PROGRAMME FOR YOUNG PEOPLE & CHILDREN Droichead Arts Centre is committed to providing an ongoing and ambitious Outreach Programme for Young People & Children to ensure that arts and culture is freely available and accessible to all children in the Louth and East Meath Area. Our 2019 outreach programme will offer a variety of workshops and tours, both in the arts centre and in schools throughout the region, including:

This season, we will continue to host free workshops in our gallery and print studios, where professional artists work with students on the creation and making of artworks. For Leaving Certificate Art, Craft and Design students in 5th and 6th year, we will provide tours specifically based around Section III Appreciation of Art: The Gallery Question (q:16). See pages 6, 7 & 8 for more information about exhibitions coming up this autumn/winter.
LEANBH CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL
In October, our team of visual artists and singer/songwriter Tríona Ní Dhuibhir will visit primary schools to host workshops that will encourage children’s creativity, expression and interaction with the arts. For more information on Leanbh Children’s Festival, see pages 16 & 17.
THE SHAKESPEARE SESSIONS
TAILTIU THEATRE IN ASSOCIATION WITH DROICHEAD ARTS CENTRE Facilitators Barry Morgan and Cathal Thornton will visit second level schools to offer workshops with a different approach to Shakespeare. Working closely with the Junior and Leaving Certificate English curricula, Tailtiu have devised a series of workshops to aid students in their understanding of these often-feared texts when it comes to assessments. VOICES My tenure as Artist in Association at Droichead Arts Centre has been a happy one...The support of Droichead Arts Centre has meant access to writing spaces and recording equipment as well as that most valuable of things, a supportive creative partnership. The post and its association with the Arts Centre has also opened doors and lent an air of credibility to my requests for information and invitations to collaborate. As well as curatorial duties, the main focus of my tenure has been the creation of my show, Port, a song-cycle written around the stories of our own Port here in town. Anyone who knows me is aware of my love of stories of the sea. My bookshelves are liberally dotted with sea-related stuff: from where I am sitting I can see William Golding’s Pincher Martin alongside his To The Ends of The Earth trilogy, Nathaniel Philbrick’s In The Heart of The Sea and copies of the historical accounts which spawned it, Joseph O’Connor’s Star of The Sea, classics like Moby Dick and The Old Man and The Sea. But the land-based stories of the Port are as rich, almost a converse of the stories of life at sea, and I have been fortunate to get fantastic reading material in this regard from generously shared archives. Once again my heartfelt thanks to Drogheda Port Company for its support in so many facets of what I’m doing. In March we previewed three songs from the suite at Droichead’s gala fundraising concert. The core of my collaborative band was present – singers Carol Keogh and John Ruddy, pianist Josh Johnston and my Kern brothers, Barry Kieran and Brendan McCreanor. The collaboration has since broadened further to include extra musicians and the creative input of my great friend, Darren Thornton. The full show goes up on November 16th. Hopefully see you there!

Port is a collection of songs by current Droichead Artist in Association SJ McArdle, all inspired by real and imagined stories associated with Drogheda Port’s rich and storied history, composed for folk-rock ensemble and guest vocalists. Joining SJ to perform the song cycle will be his Kern band members Brendan McCreanor (uilleann pipes) and Barry Kieran (fiddle), along with special guests Carol Keogh, Josh Johnston, John Ruddy and others. As a singer-songwriter, SJ has released three albums, most recently Blood and Bones in 2014. The album’s lead-off song, Two Steps From Heaven, was the main song in the Cecelia Ahern-written movie, Between Heaven and Here, while another of SJ’s songs, Till The Docklands Drown, was performed during Element Pictures’ A Date For Mad Mary (2016). SJ has performed in Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, the UK and the US, most recently as one third of critically acclaimed folk trio Kern, whose new album is due later this year. “Bravo for an artist who has taken contemporary Irish music to parts it far too seldom reaches” - Hot Press Funded by the Arts Council and Create Louth, Louth County Council Arts Office, with sponsorship from Drogheda Port Company.

Lourdes Brass Band are one of the most successful in Ireland. Under the Musical Direction of Michael Alcorn and with a membership of 100+, Lourdes operates a Senior Band, Youth Band and Junior classes, all of whom will feature in this Annual Christmas Concert. Make sure to bring your singing voices on the night as the programme will include many Christmas classics and feature some of the bands very talented soloists!

Made up of Brendan McCreanor (uilleann pipes), SJ McArdle (voice and guitar) and Barry Kieran (fiddle), Kern are Co. Louth’s best-loved contemporary folk band. Their debut album, False Deceiver, garnered significant national airplay with its mix of songs and tunes from the band’s home county, along with original material. Releasing their second album in September 2019, they’ll bring a mix of new songs and familiar favourites to this unmissable live performance.
Think of a beautiful tapestry with many vibrant colours, of blues, soul and jazz. This is the incredible voice of Niamh Strong. Born into one of Ireland's musical families, Niamh’s father was legendary blues singer Rob Strong while brother Andrew played Decco Cuff in the movie The Commitments. In March 2018, Niamh completed her new album, Niamh Strong Sings Eva Cassidy, and now performs this tribute to her idol live on stage.

He has assumed the identity of a famous but deceased writer, and plans to use the man’s documentation to obtain a transit visa and immigrate to Mexico. Abbas, his two children and his brother, having fled war-torn Central Africa, now live in Paris. From BBC Young Musician to royal weddings, young cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason joins the Irish Chamber Orchestra for Saint Saëns Cello Concerto. The evening’s programme also includes Deirdre McKay’s Meltwater and Bizet’s Symphony No. 1 with conductor Gabor Kali.

One of the most dynamic duos in Ireland at the present time, violinist Patrick Rafter and pianist Michael McHale present a programme of Mozart, Ravel, Debussy, Ysaÿe and Franck.
