HERE COMES THE SUMMER Here comes the summer, and with it the best that Drogheda has to offer in culture and creativity, set against the historic backdrop of our beautiful town. A time of festivals, offsite ventures and collaborations. First up is the annual Drogheda Arts Festival, a jam packed week of art and culture, fun and play, opening on the 1 May at 7.30pm in the Droichead. June sees us board a Tall Ship for the return of The Stowaway Sessions as part of the Maritime Festival, two intimate music events, in a unique setting. August is all about Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann and what a week it will be, the largest annual celebration of Irish culture, music, song and dance, and all in our town. In between, of course, we have lots to entertain from our annual summer camps and shows for children and young people, to our outdoor theatre at the Battle of the Boyne, and the return of the dancing queen, Deirdre O’Kane, in her brand new comedy show, A Line of O’Kane… I look forward to welcoming you to all of our events.

Artist Siobhan McGibbon and writer Maeve O’Lynn began their collaboration on The Xenophon Project in 2015. The Xenophon Project is an inter-disciplinary art and words project that employs sculpture, narrative, animation and technology to explore the interstices between art and science, and the future of the human species. This show brings together a collection of artefacts and installation from across the lifespan of the Xenophon Project, to immerse the audience in a posthuman future.

This programme of films comes from the IFI Irish Film Archive and features a host of stories made in and about Louth from 1897 to more recent times. From the earliest flickering images of Drogheda taken from a moving train by the frères Lumières in 1897 to a host of short films made by Gael Linn in the 1950s and ‘60s and a particularly exciting All Ireland Football Final from 1957!

Created by members of Shine, a mental health support group

Spectrum aka Pete 'Sonic Boom' Kember is best known as a founding member of psychedelic hypno-drone pioneers 'Spacemen 3'. Influenced by bands such as The 13th Floor Elevators and MC5, they created a trance-like minimalistic psychedelic sound based on the songwriting partnership of Sonic Boom (Pete Kember) and J.Spaceman (Jason Pierce). The band split in 1991 and Sonic’ began recording as ‘Spectrum’ and ‘EAR’ (Experimental Audio Research). This performance is exclusive to Drogheda and is a rare chance to see this legendary sonic pioneer play music from a catalogue spanning over 3 decades.

Join us for an evening with actor and writer, John Connors, in conversation with journalist Marie-Louise Muir, BBC NI’s The Arts Show. We are delighted to welcome John Connors, IFTA winner for Best Actor 2018 to Drogheda Arts Festival. John has spoken directly and honestly about his own struggles with depression, and has been an outspoken critic of state policy in the areas of Travellers’ rights, homelessness, and funding for film. His fearlessness and commitment to the causes he espouses makes John Connors an ideal Dissenter for DAF 2018.

VOICES I used to write a lot. In my twenties I lived in a house with Darren Thornton, the writer and director, and the actor and musician John Ruddy. That was a creative household for sure. When it came time to record my album Year of the Tiger I had 63 songs written. I would demo them on a little 4-track cassette machine I inherited from my brother. But some songs just sounded wrong when I played them back, and I couldn’t figure out why. It was John Spillane who unlocked it for me. “That voice is a weapon,” he said. “It’s a machine gun. Write for your voice.” I have an odd voice. It’s a good storytelling voice I think, it has a certain amount of authority and authenticity. I’ve learned to write for it in the intervening years as a solo artist and with my band, Kern, the greatest collaboration I’ve ever been involved in. One of the most exciting things about being Artist in Association at Droichead Arts Centre this year is the potential to write for other voices. Singers whose voices I love and can believe, whether the song is salty or sexy or sad or swashbuckling or serious. I write differently now. The business of raising a family and working in education means I write in my head a lot. I write more slowly, but with a greater chance of not wanting to bin the song at the end of the process. I’m really excited about presenting something new to you next spring when the song cycle I’m working on is complete. I hope you’ll love it.

Introduced by Peter Fallon (Gallery Press), Tom French will read from from his latest book of poetry, 'The Last Straw'. The Last Straw reveals an ever quickening sense of what a poem might be — and do. With its capacity to move his readers and listeners and to register ordinary moments in a luminous glow, it’s no wonder his work attracts an ever growing host of admirers. Touching the Bones (2001) received the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. He lives in County Meath and works in the County library service.
