A NEW YEAR... From spring to the edge of summer, and in and out of the grey of winter, the 2019 programme is set to inspire you, our audience. We will see the growth of artist’s endeavours, months of conceptual plans will take root and as we move through each season ideas will emerge and begin to show the promise that is our regional creative talent. Beginning with Printworks in our gallery, showcasing the work of our print artists; followed by the voice that is SJ McArdle, our current artist in association, in a special performance of his song cycle inspired and sponsored by Drogheda Port; to the work of Tailtiu, and their new play for children this autumn as part of Leanbh, finishing the year with the premiere of a play by actress/playwright Grainne Rafferty, our artist in association for 2019/2020. In March, as part of our fundraising strategy we will host an evening celebrating the songs and music from Louth and beyond, featuring Drogheda’s own Kern, and acclaimed fiddler Gerry O’Connor, with some very special guests to be announced soon. This event will contribute valuable funds to our artistic programmes. Midway through the year, visual artists will take over our gallery for the summer, working in eight pop up studios in a response to the need for affordable artist studio space in the town. August sees the return of the Fleadh, and a photographic exhibition, Slides, featuring the wealth of musical talent in the region. Our film and theatre clubs will continue throughout the year, with programmes that will challenge and provoke, with stories of war, survival, personal struggles, homelessness, healthcare and loss. We will work with our many partners like Drogheda Classical Music to bring you top class performers from here and abroad. Once again, we are delighted to welcome back the best in local drama and the beautiful sounds and voices from our bands and choirs, the year wouldn’t be the same without them! New programmes are been developed as I write. Droichead are partnering with Words Ireland on an initiative with six other venues, where we will work with a Literature Audience Development Officer, Dani Gill. Dani, who spent six years as Director of Cúirt International Literature Festival, will help us to connect with new literature audiences and to develop quality and innovative literature programmes. We are also setting up a youth focus group, who will shape and advise on programmes for young people. All of this and much, much more coming your way in 2019.

VISUAL ARTS PRINTWORKS RUNNING UNTIL SAT 2 MAR 2019
This group exhibition explores the many facets of contemporary print making; including, etching, lithography, screen print, monoprint, installation and the three dimensional possibilities of print making. PRINTWORKS celebrates and brings attention to the range and wealth of print work being produced in the North East Region. From an open submission process, independent curator Dorothy Smith has invited fourteen artists from the North East region and two guest artists to participate in this varied and exciting show. Works by Adrian+Shane, Debora Ando, Els Borghart, Ă“rlaith Cullinane, Aidan Flanagan, Raphael Hynes, Declan Kelly, Robert Kelly, Jackie Hudson Lalor, Anthony Lyttle, John Moloney, Jebun Nahar , Garry McGuire, Kieran McNulty, John O'Connor, Niamh O'Connor. Art and photography is taught throughout the network of Louth & Meath Education & Training Board’s schools, colleges and Youthreach centres. This competition is designed to encourage all students to demonstrate their artistic skills and creativity and to showcase this work. To date the response has been excellent and the standard beyond our expectations. The renowned Artist Robert Ballagh kindly judges the competition which is in its’ 4th year.

Set up four years ago, St Mary’s Diocesan Photography Club has gone from strength to strength growing in numbers to over 70 students. With the annual September walking tour of Drogheda, students are encouraged to see the beauty in their home town and surrounding areas. Our exhibition celebrates this beautiful town full of historical architecture and significance and encourages our students to express their creative sides through the medium of photography.

An exhibition of 36 self-portrait assemblages by students of St. Ita’s School, Drogheda, that feature works created, treasured and found that combine to form unique and striking self-portraits. Artists Yvonne Dowd Gardiner and Kieran McNulty facilitated a programme of workshops that allow the students to develop these individual artworks. This project has been funded through Creative Ireland.

Based on the writings and testimonies of people living with mental health issues, Lysis is a docudrama that traces the experiences of five individuals. This audio-visual installation is a forthright portrait of people side-lined by society through everyday stigma, prejudice and general ignorance toward mental health. Lysis journeys through psychosis and toward recovery, challenging for the right to be recognised beyond diagnoses. A celebration of the genuine strength of human character. Created by members of Shine, a mental health support group First Fortnight is a charity that challenges mental health prejudice through arts and cultural action.

Sound Sketch is a unique concert presented by the new Louth-based music school, Grow Music. Participants will be invited to listen and visually interpret what they hear through the medium of drawing. Afterwards, the artwork will be collected and digitally reproduced in partnership with EDDE for a special online exhibition. Through this project Grow Music hopes to bring awareness to the value of creativity and bolster mental health through the feeling of artistic fulfilment and achievement.

A one woman show about addiction. Set in a treatment centre over the course of a month, we get to meet all the clients, hear their stories and witness their recovery, or relapse. It explores alcohol, heroin and cocaine addiction through the eyes of the central character, 18 year old Bernadette Fagan who has an eating disorder, a controlling mother and a body image to die for. Sweet About Me looks at how society views and ranks addiction and aims to dispel myths, proving that no matter what walk of life you come from, addiction never discriminates.

VOICES I had a fascination and love of the theatre before I thought of it as a possible way of life. My first memory of being at a live performance was of sitting on a family friend’s knee at a ‘Dubliners’ concert in The Stadium on Dublin’s South Circular Road when I was no more than about five. I attended many of their concerts thereafter and always found the atmosphere exciting and urgent. As a child my sister and I were fortunate in that our parents had befriended many people in the world of entertainment and would very often get to meet them post performance. Memories of meeting Maureen Potter or Danny Cummins after a ‘Panto’ at the Gaiety are lovely to look back on. Jesus Christ Superstar at Goffs in Kildare or meeting B.B. King after a concert at the stadium are other memories that are still vivid in my mind but it wasn’t until I saw my first ‘straight’ play, The Field at The Abbey Theatre, that I think the seed was sown in regard to what I would love to do for a living. There is a young son in the play and I remember looking at the performance the actor gave and thinking, “I could do that!”. Thirty years later and I’m still trying to, ‘do that!’ A life in the arts can be very frustrating at times, enforced periods of unemployment, rejection and just plain bad luck or bad timing but when on occasion and the stars are aligned, there is no better feeling than connecting with another actor and the audience in telling a story and combining to capture a shared experience that is hard to beat. I will continue to pursue this life as an actor simply because I have some indescribable need to do it and I’ve learned that any relative success comes not from talent, which will get you only so far, or hard work which is vital but most of all through perseverance.

The Shakespeare Sessions | Tailtiu Theatre in association with the Droichead Arts Centre | Jan – April 2019 Are you sick of Shakespeare? Bored of the bard? Is your head melted with iambic pentameter, technique, and motif? Well fear not as facilitators Barry Morgan and Cathal Thornton visit second level schools to offer a different approach to Shakespeare. By working closely with the Junior and Leaving Certificate English curricula, Tailtiu have devised a series of workshops to aid students in their understanding of these often-feared texts when it comes to assessments.
YOUTH FOCUS GROUP
In 2019 Droichead Arts Centre will set up a Youth Focus Group. This group will be comprised of young people aged 18-25 who will come together, and help shape and advise on programmes for young people. To close the 2018/19 series, Barry Douglas returns to Drogheda for his first solo piano recital. Taking place in the beautiful setting of Highlanes Gallery, Barry will perform Mussorgsky’s most famous work Pictures at an Exhibition, which he was inspired to write after a visit to an art exhibition by Viktor Hartmann.

The presentation style is Pecha Kucha 20x20, a Japanese presentation style where there are 20 slides and 20 seconds per slide which keeps the momentum fast paced and interesting. Every year in Whistleberry Forest, the creatures of the forest look forward to the end of the frosty Winter, and to the beginning of Spring. This year was a little different however, as Springtime had arrived much earlier than usual. All the hibernating animals, except for Huggy the hedgehog, were still curled up fast asleep. Huggy must go on an adventurous musical quest in search of evidence of Spring, if he is to convince his friends that it is time to wake up! This wonderfully interactive performance is led by Thomas Johnston (whistles, song, and uilleann pipes) and Púca Puppets’ Niamh Lawlor.
