WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR 2017 was primarily a year of looking forward and an opportunity for me to put in place key aspects of my vision for the centre. Part of that process was very much about connections with both artists and audiences near and far, the results of which can be seen in Orientation, a group exhibition featuring ten artists from Drogheda and its environs; Droichead Presents Drama - Theatre Club and the re-imagining of Leanbh Children’s Festival. In 2018, we will continue this process, and showcase and support the work of artists in a new pilot programme. A man with one of the most distinctive voices in Irish music, singer/musician/composer SJ McArdle will join us in 2018, as our Artist in Association, and will spend the year devising and composing a song cycle around the deep and rich history of Drogheda’s Port, culminating in a not to be missed performance in Spring 2019. SJ will also be part of the curatorial team for the Stowaway Sessions as part of the Maritime Festival in 2018. Music will feature heavily in 2018 with Fleadh Ceol na hÉireann taking place throughout the town in August featuring the best in traditional arts. So we decided to kick off the year with a foot tapping and pulsating music gig to get us all warmed up, featuring Arcady’s Niamh Parsons, Donegal fiddle maestro, Ciarán Tourish, flautist Liam Kelly, and guitarist John Doyle. To complete our pre Fleadh programme, we are bringing back our hugely successful slow sessions in January, with musician Brendan McCreanor. Of course, we will continue to bring you all the best of local and international talent with film, comedy, talks, workshops, song, theatre, festivals, visual arts, ending the year with a group exhibition in December 2018 featuring the work of artists from our very own print studios here in Droichead. So, we hope you enjoy our Spring Programme, and I will see you soon at Droichead.

drawing is a slow process in a fast moving world By Dorothy Smith

You start on a path not knowing where it will take you. An interest in painting and art leads to encounters with many interesting, elusive and previously unknowable places and ideas. A move to a specific geographical location leads to experiences that deepens interest and knowledge in yet other new areas. Paintings of images seen during night walks in my locality mark the start of paying closer attention to the built environments we construct. Glimpses into the lit windows on residential streets, images of interior lives filtered through and semi obscured by curtains, blinds, potted plants; rich colours, texture, light, warm and cold; the front window representing how we present the public version of our private spaces. The business of Phibsborough, Dublin where I live, the complex business of fitting so many moving things; people, cars, busses, bikes, trucks, vans into a space first laid out centuries ago. The corresponding underutilisation of other spaces; vacant sites, empty commercial premises, top floors of buildings; the difficulty of getting from A to B, of crossing the road. Over 50% of the world’s population now live in urban settings. How our cities and built spaces work matters. Drawing as a methodology of exploring these spaces may seem incongruous in this linked and digital age. Drawing is a slow process in a fast moving world; in a fugitive space such as a city, constantly evolving and never ‘finished’. My work includes drawings of urban structures and infrastructures, incorporating many urban topographies including those temporary, permanent, functional, abandoned, those undergoing change, the iconic and the demolished. Drawing has helped me explore my own neighbourhood and my experience of it, it has made me think about the importance of the places in which our everyday lives unfold. I have been surprised by what I have discovered, what it has made me notice; how deeply layered are the places we create, how stimulating it is to look and draw. Dorothy Smith is an artist and curator and is curator of the group exhibition Orientation.

DIR: SALLY POTTER | UK

This remarkable film follows the lives of three strong and independent-minded Israeli-Palestinian women who share an apartment in Tel Aviv. What makes this sharp dramedy so compelling are the protagonists, whose split lives have rarely been depicted on screen. They find themselves ‘in between’ the free and unfettered lives they’re aspiring to lead and the restrictions still imposed on them by their country and their families.

It’s the summer of 1983, and precocious 17-year-old Elio Perlman is spending the days with his family at their 17th-century villa in Lombardy, Italy. He soon meets Oliver, a handsome doctoral student who’s working as an intern for Elio’s father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of their surroundings, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever.

A social gathering to celebrate the promotion of Janet (Kristin Scott Thomas) to the role of shadow health secretary quickly descends into farce in this deliciously tart black comedy of manners. Guest relations soon turn sour as alcohol-fuelled revelations come thick and fast. Presented in gleaming black and white, tensions are high and the one-liners keep flowing as the star cast ensemble becomes increasingly unhinged.

“Winning performances and all-round vitality.” The Times

“A full-hearted romantic masterpiece.” Empire

“An A-list cast at the top of their game” Mark Kermode - Observer

an open minded approach to music By Brendan McCreanor

I was very fortunate to have Irish music so close to my home as a child. I started the whistle at 6 in Scoraíocht Lann Léire in Dunleer, which not only immersed me in music but Irish dance, language and culture. I hadn’t many outlets as a child but I always enjoyed the inclusivity of Irish music in sessions. It was a safe place to hide and now and again I could put my head above water with a new tune as part of a set if I was feeling brave. It is that inclusivity and ability to meld into one that I enjoy at the slow sessions. I can take the reins but it is ultimately decided by the hive mind where we go. Everyone gets something different out of it. I still see music as genreless. I tried classical, rock n’ roll and pop pieces on my whistle, which didn’t always work out. This frustrated me and I think it was this frustration that led me on to play the fiddle. Its fretless fingerboard and whole world of opportunities is very appealing to me. I found that when I play a different instrument it sparks off ideas in a different part in my brain, which I find exciting. Whenever I am on the quest for a new instrumental in a song with my band Kern for example or I need a break from the physicality of the uilleann pipes I just change instrument. This open minded approach to music was always present and it grew considerably when I undertook the Applied Music Degree in Dundalk IT. There, my mind was exposed to new and exciting things like electroacoustic music and some of the more obscure contemporary composers. Here too my curiosity and music library grew extensively when it came to folk and traditional music from around the world. I have worked and toured with singer/songwriters, rappers and rock guitarists over the last few years which certainly keeps things fresh for me. I first of all have to find out where the artist is coming from and where they see me fitting into their overall sound. Intuition comes in very useful here to me. For the work I do as a trained hospital musician I have to possess music from a few genres in order to appeal and cater to the varied clients and staff that are working in Ireland’s care facilities today. I used to attend care homes for the elderly as a child in Ardee and Drogheda at least once a year when I was with Scoraíocht. It was here I knew bringing music into care facilities was something special and I am very happy to be making my way into this burgeoning area of work in my professional life as a musician. Pretty Yende debuts a new role at the Met as the feisty Adina, opposite Matthew Polenzani, who enthralled Met audiences as Nemorino in 2013 with his ravishing “Una furtiva lagrima.” Bartlett Sher’s production is charming, with deft comedic timing, but also emotionally revealing. Domingo Hindoyan conducts.

The world’s most popular opera returns in Franco Zeffirelli’s classic production starring a cast of young stars, including Sonya Yoncheva as the fragile Mimì and Michael Fabiano as the poet Rodolfo. Marco Armiliato conducts.

This masterpiece of dazzling vocal fireworks makes a rare Met appearance—its first in nearly 25 years—with Maurizio Benini on the podium. The all-star bel canto cast features Angela Meade in the title role of the murderous Queen of Babylon, who squares off in breathtaking duets with Arsace.

The Metropolitan Opera in New York is celebrating its 12th season of the ground breaking Live in HD programme, and with Classical Arts Ireland you can watch Opera on the big screen at Droichead. www.droichead.com

A winning cast comes together for Phelim McDermott’s clever vision of Mozart’s comedy about the sexes, set in a carnival-esque environment inspired by 1950s Coney Island. Manipulating the action are the Don Alfonso of Christopher Maltman and the Despina of Tony Award–winner Kelli O’Hara.

For the first time ever, Massenet’s sumptuous take on the Cinderella story comes to the Met. Joyce DiDonato stars in the title role, with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of Prince Charming, Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother, and Stephanie Blythe as the imperious Madame de la Haltière.

James Levine and Plácido Domingo add yet another chapter to their legendary Met collaboration with this rarely performed Verdi gem, a heart-wrenching tragedy of fatherly love. Sonya Yoncheva sings the title role opposite Piotr Beczała in the first Met performances of the opera in more than ten years.
