Bringing together local Aboriginal women of all ages is the aim of the Wagga Aboriginal Women’s Group.

Coming together for regular gatherings and cultural experiences, members have created a supportive network to focus on wellbeing, community and cultural connections.

The group focuses on learning and sharing cultural knowledge with elder guidance, empowering one another, inspiring younger generations and giving back to the community.

Rosie Powell, proud Wiradjuri woman and the group’s founder and current president, says “in our community we are so lucky to have such strong, smart, dedicated and beautiful Aboriginal women. I believe by coming together we can accomplish amazing things”.

So successful has the women’s group proved to be that there is now also a group for Wagga’s Aboriginal girls, who were able to stay connected, and build on their creative skills, during the restrictions.

While COVID-19 has had an impact on the group this year, the group is looking forward to continuing and expanding their cultural activities in 2022. “In Aboriginal communities, family, culture and empowering each other is really important. That’s what we’re all about,” Ms Powell said.
