Among the various writing skills provided by the Ashford Writing Center, I have chosen to focus on improving my skills in citing sources properly, including guidelines for quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. This area is crucial because accurate citation prevents plagiarism, enhances credibility, and demonstrates academic integrity. In the past, I have struggled with paraphrasing effectively without altering the original meaning or unintentionally plagiarizing. This challenge has often hindered my ability to integrate sources smoothly into my writing, which affected the clarity and coherence of my academic papers.
The resource I found most helpful was the "Guidelines for Paraphrasing." It provided clear examples of how to restate information in my own words while maintaining the original intent. The step-by-step strategies helped me understand how to balance paraphrasing with proper citation, avoiding accidental plagiarism. Additionally, the "Guidelines for Quoting" clarified when and how to quote directly, emphasizing the importance of incorporating quotations seamlessly into my writing.
