This week we talked a great deal about advertising and the different types of ads that companies use, including those featuring celebrity endorsements. Specifically, the discussion included a Diet Pepsi advertisement with Sofia Vergara. The assignment asks you to consider which celebrity you would use to endorse Diet Pepsi with the aim of reaching a ‘different’ target group, as well as suggest celebrities for endorsing regular Pepsi, Diet Coke, Coke Classic, and Sprite. You are also asked to explain and justify your choices for each.

Advertising is an essential component of marketing strategy, serving as a primary means for brands to communicate their value propositions and differentiate themselves in competitive markets. Celebrity endorsements, in particular, are powerful tools that can influence consumer perceptions, evoke emotional reactions, and shape brand identity. When selecting a celebrity for endorsements, companies aim to align the celebrity's image, audience, and values with their product and targeted consumer segment.
For Diet Pepsi, which traditionally targets a younger, health-conscious demographic seeking low-calorie soda options, Sofia Vergara’s endorsement has been effective due to her Colombian heritage, fashionable appeal, and vibrant personality that resonate with a youthful, trendy audience. However, to reach a ‘different’ target group—perhaps an older demographic or health-focused consumers—I would choose actress and health advocate Gwyneth Paltrow. Her association with wellness, lifestyle, and health-consciousness can appeal to consumers seeking a more sophisticated, health-oriented image of soda consumption. Her endorsement could emphasize moderation and a balanced lifestyle, aligning with the healthier image of Diet Pepsi among mature or wellness-focused audiences.
For regular Pepsi, which often targets a broad, energetic, and youthful demographic that seeks excitement and fun, I would select a celebrity known for their dynamic personality and widespread appeal among young audiences, such as musician and actor Harry Styles. Harry's mass popularity, fashion-forward style, and vibrant personality can energize the brand, making it appealing to teenagers and young adults looking for an adventurous, trendy beverage choice. His endorsement would likely exemplify the spirited, lively essence of regular Pepsi, reinforcing the brand's association with youthfulness and fun.
Regarding Diet Coke, which has traditionally marketed itself with an edgy, contemporary image, I would choose actress and influencer Emma Stone. Emma's relatable charm, versatile appeal, and impressive

influence among millennials and Gen Z consumers make her an ideal match. Her endorsement could emphasize the stylish, modern, and slightly rebellious personality of Diet Coke, appealing to urban, trend-conscious consumers who enjoy sophisticated yet accessible branding. Her image can elevate Diet Coke as a beverage for the modern, fashionable individual who values self-expression.
For Coke Classic, which embodies tradition, nostalgia, and universal appeal, I would select actor Tom Hanks. Hanks is widely regarded as an embodiment of warmth, trustworthiness, and classic American values. His association with Coca-Cola in various campaigns has reinforced the brand’s nostalgic appeal. His endorsement would reinforce Coke Classic’s positioning as a timeless, all-American beverage that resonates with a broad demographic, from older generations valuing tradition to younger consumers appreciating the brand’s rich history.
Lastly, Sprite, known for its crisp, refreshing feel and youthful, energetic branding, would benefit from endorsing a celebrity known for their lively personality and cultural relevance. I would choose rapper and songwriter Lizzo. Her vibrant personality, message of self-confidence, and influence on young audiences align well with Sprite's image. Lizzo’s endorsement could position Sprite as a fun, inclusive, and energizing beverage for a diverse, modern demographic seeking authenticity and individuality. Each celebrity choice is justified based on their public image, personal brand, and appeal to specific target demographics. Effective endorsements leverage celebrities’ influence to reinforce brand identity and connect with the desired consumer base, ultimately enhancing marketing effectiveness and driving sales.
