This Paper Is About Tv Shows And Other Media Doing The Race Thing Rig

This paper is about TV shows and other media ‘doing the race thing right, kind of’. Pick one or two good TV shows, movies or even ad campaigns. Avoid the obvious, like ‘The Cosby Show’ and 'Fresh Prince'. Though a great shows, most people would pick them for this assignment (even amid the current Cosby controversy). The paper has two main sections that deal with the HOW and WHY questions of your research.

Word count is only 1,000-1,250 words, DOUBLE SPACED, but make those words count. Mention key terms, people, ideas, references. Here is a basic outline . . . INTRO: short . . . what is your topic? describe it briefly w/a little context. is it on network (NBC, etc.) or cable channels (like HBO, showtime, etc. which tend to be a bit more edgy)? what kind of ratings/viewership does it have (as a way to quantify popularity)? the cosby show was about a black uppermiddle class family living in brooklyn, ny. describe a bit more here: family dynamics, sets, dialogue, etc. it aired on NBC and was no. 1 show for a few years in 80s. on for eight years. averaged 13 to 20 million viewers each week, 30 million at its peak. any other backstory you can find.

HOW is it different?

This section requires an analysis of why you think the chosen media is different in its racial representation. Frame it in a larger context, comparing it to other TV shows/media. For example, why is the Cosby Show different than most TV shows featuring Black characters or storylines? The significance lies in Cosby's portrayal of an affluent, positive, and multidimensional Black family—something seldom seen in mainstream primetime TV at the time. Society and culture are also key contexts—Cosby challenged stereotypes by moving beyond the ‘hood’ narrative and into the mainstream, presenting a Black family with wealth, education, and sophistication, while still maintaining authentic cultural elements. Provide one or two examples of this.

WHY is this important or progressive?

Discuss the importance of such portrayals in advancing social progress or their critiques. Shows like Cosby and others with complex, positive Black characters serve to shift public perceptions, making room for acknowledgment of diverse Black experiences. Such representations influence societal conversations about Black professionals, family life, and Black pride. These portrayals may help young Black viewers envision different life possibilities, serving as aspirational images. However, critiques highlight that such portrayals

might be unrealistic or idealized, not representative of most Black lives. Critics often argue for more nuanced, representative storytelling. Address both perspectives—the empowering aspects, and the limitations or critiques—recognizing that media representations often oscillate between reinforcing stereotypes and challenging them.

This assignment emphasizes expanding the discussion beyond stereotypes to recognize efforts by producers to influence the conversations around race and identity in American media and culture. While archaic, stereotypical images persist, some shows and campaigns push boundaries toward more complex, positive narratives.

Conclusion

In sum, the context of these media representations is vital. Connecting the dots between societal structures, cultural shifts, and media portrayals demonstrates how TV and media shape notions of race and identity. Incorporating personal insights into these broader analyses makes your research more relevant and compelling.
