The overarching aim of this study is to investigate how social media usage correlates with academic performance, thereby providing insights for educators and students alike.

The research question guiding this study is: "Does the amount of time spent on social media (IV) affect the academic performance (DV) of college students, and how does this relationship vary by gender?" The unit of analysis for this question is individual college students, allowing for detailed examination at the individual level.

The independent variable (IV) in this study is social media usage. It is a continuous variable measured in hours per day spent on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. This variable is operationally defined as the average number of hours a student reports spending on social media during a typical week, based on self-reported data collected via a survey questionnaire.

The dependent variable (DV) is academic performance, operationally defined by the students’ Grade Point Average (GPA). GPA is a continuous variable measured on a 4.0 scale, reflecting students’ overall academic achievement as reported by institutional records or self-reported data validated through verification methods.

For clarity, the variable type classification indicates that social media usage is a continuous/interval variable, while GPA is also continuous/interval. These operational definitions allow for precise

measurement and meaningful analysis of the relationship between social media engagement and academic success.

The hypothesis for this study posits that increased time spent on social media (higher social media usage) is negatively associated with academic performance (lower GPA). Specifically, I hypothesize that students who report spending more hours on social media will tend to have lower GPAs. Additionally, it is expected that this relationship may be moderated by gender, with potential differences in the strength or direction of this association between male and female students.
