Paper For Above instruction Protests and riots are forms of collective action that reflect societal discontent and aim to influence public policy or social perceptions. However, they differ significantly in terms of their purpose, conduct, and implications within the framework of the criminal justice system. Understanding these differences is crucial, especially given recent developments across the United States, where social unrest has been prominent in response to issues such as racial injustice, police brutality, and economic disparities. A protest is a peaceful demonstration where individuals gather to express their opinions, grievances, or calls for change within legal boundaries. Protests serve as fundamental rights protected under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, emphasizing freedom of speech, assembly, and petition. Examples include marches, sit-ins, vigils, and peaceful rallies. The primary goal of protests is to raise awareness, influence policymakers, and stimulate dialogue without resorting to violence or destruction of property (Klein, 2018). When conducted peacefully, protests are regarded as legitimate expressions of democratic participation, fostering societal change through nonviolent means. Conversely, riots involve violent and destructive behavior that often erupts spontaneously or as a result of provocation. Riots typically feature acts such as looting, vandalism, arson, and physical assaults. They usually commence as an outburst of frustration, anger, or resistance against perceived injustices but quickly spiral into chaos that endangers public safety, individual lives, and property (Chermak, 2019). Unlike protests, riots are generally not organized with clear goals and tend to undermine the legitimacy of the causes they purport to defend. The criminal justice system tends to respond to riots with law enforcement measures focused on restoring order, often resulting in arrests, legal charges, and sometimes, the deployment of military forces (Simons, 2020).
