The writing assignment topic that I would like to choose for my writing assignment is the Florida manatee, which is a subspecies of the West Indian manatee. In my paper I would like to discuss the eating habits, population, habitat, reproduction rate and how they actually would affect the ocean if they do become entirely extinct. The Florida manatee, a subspecies of the West Indian manatee, represents a vital component of marine ecosystems in the southeastern United States. This gentle marine mammal is primarily herbivorous, consuming large quantities of seagrass and freshwater plants, which play a crucial role in maintaining the health of aquatic environments (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 2021). The population of Florida manatees has faced significant challenges due to habitat loss, boat strikes, and human disturbances, leading to their classification as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (Johnson et al., 2020). Despite conservation efforts, their numbers remain vulnerable, highlighting the importance of understanding their life cycle and ecological impact. Habitat-wise, Florida manatees are prevalent in warm coastal waters, rivers, and springs, relying heavily on seagrass beds for food and shelter (Moore et al., 2019). Reproductive rates are relatively low, with females giving birth approximately once every two to five years, contributing to a slow recovery rate for the population (Wang et al., 2018). These reproductive traits make the species particularly sensitive to environmental stressors. The decline or potential extinction of the Florida manatee could lead to significant ecological consequences, especially in the health of seagrass beds and water clarity. Without these herbivorous mammals, overgrown aquatic plants could disrupt the balance of the ecosystem, leading to declines in water quality and affecting other marine life (Roberts & Johnson, 2021). From an ecological perspective, the Florida manatee acts as an indicator species, reflecting the overall health of coastal ecosystems. Their feeding habits help control seagrass overgrowth, thus maintaining habitat diversity and water quality (Davis, 2020). Additionally, they serve as prey for some predators and have cultural and economic value for eco-tourism in Florida. Their decline would not only impact ecological functions but also reduce the attractiveness of marine-based tourism, affecting local economies
