The Two Theories That I Have Selected Are Roy Adaption Model Of Nur

The two theories that I have selected are: Roy Adaption Model of Nursing and Interpersonal Relations in Nursing. This week, I am reflecting on my personal nursing philosophy as it has evolved over the course of my RN-BSN program at WCU. I aim to identify specific theorists I resonate with and analyze how my philosophy and academic work exemplify meeting Essential IX, Outcome #18: developing awareness of patients' and healthcare professionals’ spiritual beliefs and values and their impact on healthcare. I will review my past academic work, evaluate my effectiveness in meeting this essential, and consider the influence this proficiency will have on my future nursing practice. Additionally, I will include references to specific assignments from courses such as NURS 500 and LDR 432 to demonstrate how I have integrated this essential into my educational journey.

Throughout my journey in the RN-BSN program at WCU, my personal nursing philosophy has been significantly shaped by the foundational theories of nursing, particularly Sister Callista Roy's Adaption Model and Hildegard Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Theory. These theories have provided me with a comprehensive framework for understanding patient care, emphasizing holistic and patient-centered approaches. Over the course of my studies, especially through assignments in NURS 500, I have deepened my understanding of these theories and integrated their principles into my practice, fostering an awareness of diverse spiritual and cultural beliefs impacting health.

Sister Roy's Adaptation Model emphasizes the importance of viewing patients as biopsychosocial beings capable of adapting to their environment. This perspective aligns with my belief that recognizing the unique spiritual and cultural contexts of patients enhances their ability to adapt and recover. In particular, my assignment in NURS 500 involved analyzing case studies where patients' spiritual beliefs significantly influenced their health behaviors and treatment preferences. By applying Roy's model, I learned to assess patients' adaptive modes—physical, self-concept, role, and interdependence—and tailor care plans accordingly. This approach has helped me realize the critical role spiritual beliefs play in patient health and recovery, supporting my development of culturally sensitive and holistic care practices.

Hillegard Peplau's Interpersonal Relations Theory complements Roy's model by emphasizing the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship as central to effective care. Through coursework in LDR 432, I explored how interpersonal communication facilitates trust, respect, and understanding—elements

essential to uncovering patients' spiritual needs and values. An example from this course involved a project where I practiced active listening and empathetic communication to build rapport with patients from diverse backgrounds. This experience underscored how interpersonal skills impact patients' willingness to share their beliefs and how such sharing influences their healthcare choices. Consequently, I have become more adept at recognizing and respecting patients’ spiritual perspectives, which directly supports the program’s goal of fostering awareness of such beliefs in healthcare contexts.

Reflecting on my academic journey, I realize how these theories have translated into real-world applications. For instance, during clinical rotations, I have directly applied Roy’s adaptation principles by assessing patients' spiritual and cultural backgrounds and incorporating their beliefs into care plans. Similarly, my interpersonal skills have improved through simulated patient interactions, allowing me to navigate sensitive conversations about spiritual beliefs confidently. These experiences confirm my growth in meeting Essential IX, Outcome #18, by enhancing my capacity to recognize and respect the diverse spiritual values of patients and healthcare professionals alike.

Moreover, this proficiency has important implications for my future practice. As healthcare increasingly emphasizes holistic and patient-centered care, the ability to understand and integrate patients’ spiritual beliefs is crucial. I anticipate that this competency will facilitate better patient engagement, improve health outcomes, and foster a culturally competent practice environment. My academic work, underscored by specific theories and real-world practice, has prepared me to uphold these principles effectively.
