The second writing assignment will be a technical description for a non The second writing assignment will be a technical description for a non-specialized audience. You will explain to a non-technical audience how something works. You will choose an object or a process with which you are familiar. You will describe this object or process to an audience that has little or no background of the subject. Keep in mind that you are not writing instructions on how to do something. If you describe a process, you cannot describe a process that involves direct human action. For this assignment, if you describe a process, you will describe an activity that takes place or a phenomenon that happens, explaining its mechanism or functioning. For example, you could describe how the heart pumps blood in the human body, but not how to perform a blood test. Your description will include pictures or images. Use visual detail through words and images to enhance understanding. Examples include: describing how spark plugs work for non-mechanics, how a graphics card functions for someone unfamiliar with computers, how a game operates for non-gamers, or how a military function operates to a civilian audience. Additionally, you might describe the function of equipment used in a previous assignment, such as explaining how a hydraulic jack lifts a car, without instructing how to use it. The key is to explain how the object or process functions or operates. Refer to chapter 20 from Markel, “Writing Descriptions,” for guidance. Focus on understanding the difference between instructions and description (see page 549). Your description should answer: What is the object or process? How is it defined? What does it do? What does it look like? What is it made of? (if describing an object) How does it work? Why should the reader be interested? The document should be single-spaced. Consider organizing your description using one of these strategies: Spatial: Describe the object or process according to its physical layout, starting from one part to another.
