The field of economics is fundamental to understanding how societies allocate scarce resources to meet the needs and desires of individuals and groups. Traditionally, economics has been defined as the study of how people make choices under conditions of scarcity and how those choices interact within markets to determine the distribution of resources, prices, and wealth (Mankiw, 2020). However, I propose a broader

and more integrative definition: economics as the science of decision-making that considers both individual preferences and societal implications, encompassing not only market interactions but also policy impacts, ethical considerations, and environmental sustainability. This perspective recognizes the interconnectedness of economic decisions and their ripple effects across communities and nations.

Understanding the ten principles of economics provides a comprehensive framework for analyzing economic behavior and policy choices. These principles include: (1) people face trade-offs; (2) the cost of something is what you give up to get it; (3) rational people think at the margin; (4) people respond to incentives; (5) trade can make everyone better off; (6) markets are usually a good way to organize economic activity; (7) governments can sometimes improve market outcomes; (8) a country’s standard of living depends on its ability to produce goods and services; (9) prices rise when the government prints too much money; and (10) society faces a short-run trade-off between inflation and unemployment (Mankiw, 2020). These principles serve as foundational tools for understanding economic phenomena and for designing strategies that promote sustainable growth and well-being.

Among these principles, I have selected "people respond to incentives" as the principle most relevant to our company's strategic context. This principle emphasizes that individuals and organizations alter their behavior based on the costs and benefits associated with certain actions. In our case, incentives such as trade policies, exchange rates, regulatory environments, and technological advances influence how we operate internationally. For example, in the current geopolitical climate, tariffs and trade agreements significantly impact our supply chain decisions and pricing strategies. By understanding these incentives, we can better adapt our production and marketing approaches to maximize benefits and mitigate risks.

This principle is exemplified by recent trade tensions between the US and European countries, which have led to the imposition of tariffs and retaliatory measures. Such externalities affect how European hospitals and distributors perceive and choose suppliers, directly influencing our sales performance. Positive externalities of this principle include increased innovation and efficiency when firms and consumers respond proactively to incentives, such as tax breaks for research and development or subsidies for eco-friendly technologies. Conversely, negative externalities can include market distortions, resource misallocations, or environmental degradation resulting from unintended responses to poorly designed incentives.

Externally, the "people respond to incentives" principle has widespread implications beyond our company.

For communities and governments, incentive structures influence employment rates, educational investments, and environmental policies. For instance, in the US, tax incentives for renewable energy have accelerated adoption and technological innovation, contributing to economic growth and environmental benefits. At a broader level, international governments may implement incentives to promote sustainable development or curb illegal activities, such as poaching or deforestation. Therefore, the strategic understanding of incentives is crucial not only for corporate decision-making but also for public policy design and societal well-being.

In conclusion, applying this principle of incentives' responsiveness can enable us to craft policies and strategies that align individual and organizational goals with societal benefits. By continuously analyzing and adjusting the incentives embedded within our operations—such as costs, benefits, regulations, and market signals—we can better position our company for long-term success. Moreover, recognizing the externalities associated with these incentives allows us to anticipate and mitigate unintended consequences, fostering a sustainable and ethically responsible business model that benefits shareholders, communities, and the broader economy.
