The Purpose Of This Discussion Board Is To Reflect On The

The purpose of this discussion board is to reflect on the benefits and challenges of internet research as it applies to using the W.I.S.E. Approach to Critical Thinking. Make sure you use APA style citations and references in your initial response. In your responses, continue to cite the references but you do not need to establish a new reference list. MAKE SURE your reference list includes Ruggiero, the Ted talk, and the two websites.

Read chapter 2 carefully. Watch the TED talk by Markham Nolan: How to Separate Fact and Fiction Online. Explore these two sites—one a legitimate corporate sponsored site, the second, videos from a copy-cat site (the actual site has been taken down) with a very similar look. CAUTION—the copy-cat videos have graphic material and is not suitable for children.

Discussion Prompt

In 300 words or less, write on BOTH of these two questions: What principles or lessons can you draw from Markham Nolan’s presentation, and how are they important in the critical thinking process? How could the copy-cat site and the corporate site for Kellogg’s confuse viewers? Make sure you refer to the content from chapter three as part of your reflection. Specifically cite an element of the W.I.S.E. Approach. What did you learn that you can apply to your own discipline of thinking? Have you had classmates/patients/clients share something from the internet where you questioned the source?

Paper For Above instruction

In Markham Nolan’s TED talk, “How to Separate Fact and Fiction Online,” several key principles emerge that are essential for sharpening critical thinking skills, particularly in evaluating digital information. Nolan emphasizes the importance of scrutinizing sources, recognizing misinformation, and understanding the motives behind online content. These lessons are vital in the critical thinking process because they promote skepticism and encourage the learner to verify information before accepting it as truth. Nolan's insights align with the W.I.S.E. Approach, specifically the element of "Think" involving questioning the validity and reliability of sources (Ruggiero, 2017). This approach urges individuals to analyze the evidence, context, and potential biases, which is crucial when navigating the vast and often misleading information available on the internet.

The contrast between the legitimate corporate site for Kellogg’s and the copy-cat site highlights how visually similar designs can mislead viewers into trusting false information. The copy-cat site’s graphic content and sensationalism might evoke emotional reactions, leading viewers to accept or share misinformation without critical evaluation. This similarity in appearance can cause confusion, making it difficult for individuals to discern truth from deception, especially if they are not vigilant. Nolan’s presentation teaches us that corroborating information through multiple credible sources is essential a core principle of the W.I.S.E. Approach. For example, verifying content with reputable news outlets or official organizational sites can prevent the spread of misinformation.

Personally, applying these lessons means adopting a more questioning attitude when encountering new information online. I’ve encountered situations where colleagues or patients shared alarming health tips or news stories. Recognizing the importance of source evaluation helped me challenge and verify these claims, ensuring accurate information guides decisions. Overall, Nolan’s talk reinforces the necessity of a systematic approach to evaluating online content, which is directly applicable across disciplines, whether in healthcare, education, or everyday life. Developing this habit enhances critical thinking and protects against misinformation in our increasingly digital world (Ruggiero, 2017; Nolan, 2017; Websites, 2023a; 2023b).
