The Importance Of Physical Activity Has Been Spotlighted By Its Select
The importance of physical activity has been spotlighted by its selection as one of the Healthy People 2020 goals, specifically to improve health, fitness, and quality of life through daily physical activity. The Healthy People 2020 campaign has identified that, “More than 80 percent of adults do not meet the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities.” Review the material on the overview, objective, and national snapshot tabs on the Healthy People 2020 website. Select and review at least one consumer information resource on the interventions and resources tabs. Consider your own level of physical activity—how it impacts your function at work, school, and in the community, and how others perceive you. Reflect on whether you serve as a role model for physical activity and health, and how this influences your credibility as a patient educator. Recognize that physical activity reduces the risk of chronic illnesses, improves mood through endorphin release, relieves stress, and maintains healthy body weight, strength, and stamina.
Take a moment for self-reflection: Has your level of physical activity affected your life, career, family, or social relationships? Use this module as an opportunity for deeper self-assessment and professional renewal. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website offers resources—readings, videos, tools, and strategies—to enhance personal, family, workplace, and community physical activity. Conduct a comprehensive review of these resources and also examine the 2014 state physical activity indicator report for community assessment updates.
Based on this research, develop a one-page Physical Activity Resource Brochure or infographic that would be accessible to peers living in the same general area. Investigate a fun, unusual, yet accessible physical activity aligned with physical activity goals by exploring sources such as Living Social, Groupon, local recreation department brochures, community bulletin boards, or newspapers. Include in your brochure: a description of the activity, its cost, when and where it can be done, the website or location listing, and relevant images or graphics to enhance visual appeal.
