The Goal Of This Assignment Is To Develop An Understanding Of Addition The goal of this assignment is to develop an understanding of additional information beyond the Home Language Survey (HLS) that can enhance a teacher’s knowledge of their students who are also language learners. Funds of knowledge is a concept that refers to the knowledge and expertise present in families and communities (Moll, Amanti, Neff & González, 1992). Scholars and educators have worked to find connections between students’ funds of knowledge and school learning. To develop the survey, LED 6565 students will review the MI Home Language Survey, reflect on the course reading, and develop questions that are appropriate for the grade level or age of students and content area they currently work in or plan on working with in the future.

The surveys should consist of 10 (undergraduate) to 15 (graduate) questions that are designed to gain an understanding of: students’ linguistic knowledge, cultural knowledge, skills that they have developed in their homes and communities, activities that they engage in at home, in their community and or used to engage in with family in their country of origin, interests and/or learning needs. The questions should not be overly personal and written in a format that encourages students to participate. The survey should include the following: • fifteen questions, • an overview on how the survey will be administered (conference, handout), • specific type of information that was learned about the focal student through the survey • at least three examples of how the information obtained from the survey will support teaching and learning. • Graduate students include at least two citations reflecting connections to course readings, • Use of APA format

An effective survey may include questions about language use, cultural traditions, skills learned from family, activities in the community, and interests that influence their learning needs. An explanation of how the survey results will be used is crucial; for instance, information gathered can inform differentiated instruction, foster culturally relevant pedagogy, and support the building of a trusting classroom environment.

Understanding students’ funds of knowledge directly informs practices that make learning more accessible and meaningful. For example, if a teacher learns that a student regularly helps in their family’s small business, they could incorporate entrepreneurial themes into math lessons (González, Moll, & Amanti, 2005). Additionally, if a student engages in traditional cultural activities, educators can develop curriculum components that reflect these practices. Lastly, knowledge about language use outside of school could guide instruction, such as integrating multilingual resources or respecting home language practices, which enhances linguistic development and affirming students’ identities.

The information obtained from such surveys supports teaching and learning by: firstly, enabling teachers to differentiate instruction based on students’ prior knowledge and cultural experiences; secondly, fostering a classroom environment that validates students’ identities and promotes engagement; and thirdly, aiding in the development of culturally responsive curricula that resonate with students’ lived experiences. As Ladson-Billings (1994) argued, culturally relevant pedagogy improves academic achievement and helps students develop a strong sense of self.

In conclusion, developing a survey to explore students’ funds of knowledge beyond traditional language surveys is fundamental in creating equitable and inclusive classrooms. By carefully designing questions that uncover linguistic, cultural, and community assets, educators can better support diverse learners.
