The focus of this discussion is adolescent healthcare. Please address the following points in your initial response: In your opinion, what are the two most important factors that influence adolescent development? Give rationales for your choices. In the Western culture, there are a variety of health services available for adolescents, but what is missing in Western society that would benefit health promotion for adolescents? How do the health problems that adolescents face impact their health and wellness in their lifetime?

Adolescent healthcare is a critical aspect of public health, as this period marks significant physical, psychological, and social development. Understanding the key factors influencing adolescent development, identifying gaps in current healthcare systems, and recognizing long-term impacts of adolescent health issues are essential for fostering healthier adulthood populations. This discussion explores the two most influential factors in adolescent development, identifies missing elements in Western health services that could enhance health promotion, and examines how adolescent health problems affect lifetime wellness.

Two of the most pivotal factors influencing adolescent development are peer relationships and mental health. Peer relationships are central during adolescence because they significantly impact social skills, identity formation, and emotional regulation (Brown, 2020). During this developmental stage, adolescents often seek acceptance and belonging, which shapes their self-esteem and behavioral choices (Steinberg, 2019). Positive peer interactions promote healthy social development and help adolescents develop resilience, whereas negative influences can lead to risky behaviors and mental health issues. Therefore, peer relationships serve as a fundamental factor because they directly affect social competence and personal growth.

Mental health is equally crucial in adolescent development due to its profound impact on behavior, academic success, and social interactions. Adolescence is a vulnerable period for the onset of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety (Kessler et al., 2021). Untreated mental health problems can impede cognitive development, academic achievement, and social relationships, creating barriers to healthy progression into adulthood. Moreover, mental health issues during adolescence can predispose individuals to chronic illnesses and persistent psychological problems later in life (Patel et al., 2018). Addressing mental health early fosters resilience and promotes overall wellness, underscoring its

importance among influential developmental factors.

Despite the variety of health services available in Western societies, certain gaps hinder optimal health promotion for adolescents. One significant missing element is comprehensive mental health and wellness programs that extend beyond clinical treatment to include preventive education, peer support, and destigmatization initiatives. Currently, mental health services tend to focus on treatment rather than prevention, and stigma remains a barrier to adolescents seeking help (Gulliver et al., 2019). Additionally, there is a lack of tailored health education that incorporates technology and social media influences, which are prominent in adolescent lives. Incorporating digital health literacy, peer-led prevention programs, and accessible mental health resources within schools and communities could significantly improve adolescents' overall health promotion efforts (Rickwood et al., 2020). Addressing these gaps would empower adolescents to manage their health proactively and seek help without fear of judgment.

The health problems confronted during adolescence have lasting implications for an individual's lifelong health and wellness. Poor mental health, substance abuse, unsafe sexual practices, and inadequate nutrition during adolescence predispose individuals to chronic conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and mental health disorders in adulthood (Sawyer et al., 2020). For example, adolescents engaging in risky behaviors, like unprotected sex or substance misuse, increase their likelihood of experiencing adverse health outcomes later, including addiction, sexually transmitted infections, and mental illnesses (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021). Furthermore, the development of healthy habits during adolescence—such as balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and stress management—lays a foundation for preventing chronic disease and promoting overall wellness in later life (De Santa et al., 2019). Addressing health problems early, therefore, is vital for reducing the burden of disease and improving life expectancy.

In conclusion, peer relationships and mental health stand out as the most influential factors in adolescent development due to their profound effects on social skills and psychological well-being. Western health systems, while comprehensive in some areas, lack preventive mental health programs and digital health literacy initiatives tailored for adolescents. The health issues faced during adolescence, if unaddressed, can perpetuate health disparities and contribute to chronic illnesses, affecting health and wellness well into adulthood. Prioritizing early intervention, holistic health education, and accessible mental health services is essential for fostering resilient, healthy adults.
