Social media has revolutionized the way activism is conducted by providing a dynamic and accessible platform for individuals and groups to organize, share, and mobilize around various causes. According to Chambliss and Eglitis (2020), social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram serve as virtual venues that facilitate the dissemination of information rapidly and extensively, allowing activists to reach a broad audience beyond traditional physical or geographical limitations. This digital space enhances participation by lowering barriers to entry, enabling even those with limited resources to engage in activism through posting, sharing, and commenting (Castells, 2012).

One prominent example of online support for a cause is the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Initially ignited by social media posts, hashtags like #BlackLivesMatter became rallying cries that coalesced into a global movement advocating against police brutality and systemic racism. The movement effectively used social media platforms to organize protests, raise awareness, and pressure institutions for reform (Taylor, 2016). The virality of the hashtag allowed millions worldwide to contribute to the discourse, demonstrate solidarity, and participate in activism regardless of their geographic location. This example illustrates how social media provides a vital venue for activism, amplifying voices that might otherwise remain unheard and fostering collective action on a massive scale.

Furthermore, social media’s real-time communication capabilities enable rapid mobilization and coordination during protests or advocacy campaigns, demonstrating its importance as an activist venue (Gerba et al., 2018). The interactive nature of social media also allows for dialogue and community-building among activists, which strengthens collective resistance and supports ongoing engagement with issues. Overall, social media acts as a powerful tool that democratizes activism, making it more inclusive and responsive in the digital age.
