Chairman’s Message

2020 marked the sixth anniversary of the London Design Awards. We started this program to recognise leadership, excellence and courageous, design-lead projects in the commercial, government and community sectors. Each of the 2020 awarded projects took a different path in searching for the unmet needs of the stakeholders and users, but they are all undeniably made for people. The tumultuous nature of 2020 left the world scrambling to understand, adapt and respond to the ever-changing situation. ‘Normal’ was put on hold and we have had to universally strap in for an abnormal ride as we navigate through a new everyday. Market conditions entered a state of flux, and almost a year on that continues to be the case. In these moments of upheaval, it is the designers’ role to bring us to the future faster, and those that have shifted away from past concepts of normal, who have refactored their businesses to the current and future conditions and who remain adaptable, have provided

themselves with the greatest possible opportunities to thrive in this era of the New Possible. At DRIVENxDESIGN we too are evolving. 2020 was our 11th year of award programs, bringing a new focus for a new decade. Over the last eleven years we have pushed as hard as possible to build the world’s largest network of award programs - along the journey there has been a range of supporting tools and programs that have evolved. We are continuing to roll out more improvements to the DRIVENxDESIGN Portal to make it even easier for Award Managers to nominate and celebrate awarded projects and enhance the awards showcase. As of 2020, anything to do with the Award Programs stays under the DRIVENxDESIGN banner while everything else falls under the ‘Design Exec Club’ banner. The Award Programs are all about providing recognition for project teams, suppliers and those with the courage to sponsor.

London Design Awards 2020

The Design Exec Club is about actionable strategic input for design focused executives. Our Supporter Program (p8) is designed to help suppliers and brands connect with the best of the best and gain invaluable connections with the emergent talent of our Elevate Program. The Design Exec Club is based on a dinner club I started in 2014 when touring through global design capitals. What began as an informal dinner conversation showed there was a glass ceiling for design conversations - it wasn’t punching through to the boardroom. Over the last 6 years, many of those dinner guests have been promoted to C-Suite positions and it proved high time to welcome in other C-Suite types to explore how design accelerates their organisational goals.

The members of the Design Exec Club are united by a common goal for a Better Future. It is all about how we can ensure the best possible future for our grandchildren’s grandchildren - yes, that’s right, five generations. Through both our DRIVENxDESIGN and Design Exec Club platforms we are proud to recognise the thought leadership that is going to create a thriving economy that is equitable and environmentally conscious. That is a Better Future, and we want to celebrate those with the courage, diversity and excellence to make it a reality. Again, congratulations, thank-you for being a part of our vision, and keep maintaining your courageous stance.

Xinglong Lake CITIC Bookstore Project Commissioner China CITIC Group Creator MUDA-Architects Team MUDA-Architects was founded both in Boston, USA and Beijing, China in 2015, whereafter Chengdu Office was established in 2017. MUDA is composed by creative designers with the background of global diversification, who are forward-looking, experienced, professional and ingenious in the field of architecture and design. We are committed to cutting-edge urban design, architectural design, interior design and art product design, etc. The project practice is diverse, providing excellent customer service and acclaimed design works. 16

In 2018, “Xinglong Lake Bookstore Architectural Creative Design Competition” started to be open to the public entries. MUDA-Architects emerged as the winner among 20 finalists out of 249 candidates. Chengdu Tianfu New Area has been identified as a crucial node in the development of The Belt and Road Initiative and the Yangtze River Economic Belt. This was stressed by President Xi when he visited Xinglong Lake in February 2018. He also mentioned that it was significant to analyse ecological value in line with the development to implement the concept of “Park City”. To correspond, the competition is prepared for creating a lakeside bookstore as a new landmark of Chengdu, which could leverage the ecological value and the human spirit collectively. Taking this as an opportunity to reflect and embody the inimitable temperament and leisurely lifestyle of Chengdu, MUDA-Architects made efforts to convey the esteem of local natural environment and add a new dimension to the future vision of “landscape integration and urban symbiosis”. Y TIME Project Commissioner Yanlord Land Group Limited Creator Lacime Architects

Y TIME locates in the northern zone of Suzhou. Placed in a favorable natural environment with convenient traffic, the center aims to distinguish itself as a community landmark, a display center and an outstanding modern architecture.

Team Cen Ling(lead architect), Huang Xiaojuan, Ruan Fuwei, Chu Wei, Yao Kaili

The architectural appearance consists of two irregular volumes that revolve, overlap and interact with one another. Some elements are presented repeatedly either in a similar or totally different manner. Time seems to stand still as visitors lose themselves in this ingeniously designed space. The revolving and overlapping building blocks make the architecture look multi-dimensional and stunning, as if a huge art museum was standing on the ground. Architects hope the building is just as impressive as an artistic sculpture that can be inscribed in everyone’s heart for long.

The community center is located in Suzhou, close to where the water of Dushu Lake flows out on the eastern bank of the upper reaches of the Grand Canal. It functions as a place of interaction and service for residents in surrounding areas, and it is designed to present life in an artistic manner. When architects first come to the site and enjoy the sight of the Grand Canal along its stone railing, an idea of stone and water comes to their mind naturally. The two phrases of “reclining stone beam” and “clear and green glaze” have largely depicted the future of the building, and it only calls for perfection in lightness here. The building and landscape of the project are like cell division and differentiation. One rectangle is divided into two parallel parts: the lower part continues to be separated into four landscapes in stacking arrangement while the upper part is split into three blocks; a path lies across the water, the three blocks turn into boxes in different colors and textures, and doors and windows are kept.

At the beginning of the design, the Nanchang strange stone ridge and the water sleeve dance were selected as cultural elements, and the starting point was the beauty of the strange stone and the spirit of the water sleeve. The Cloud Hotel is located at the highest point of Luzhou Yunjin Paradise. Here you can overlook the vast black pine forest around, watch swirling clouds, the sunset and the ascending moon, or look up at the boundless starry sky. For this reason, the area near a strip of 12-meter-width city park becomes the point where the design gets started. The overall design emphasizes the visitor’s experience of the space on site, especially when it conveys the fluid circulation of different spaces as experienced in traditional classical gardens in Suzhou. The display center consists of three separate functional buildings with an open area enclosed in the middle. It looks like three independent glass boxes of different shapes and sizes are beautifully scattered on the site.

In the heart of the site, it is the central area, which is not only the focal point of vision, but also provides people with a place to relax. The project has improved the microclimate and stored rainwater, thus, created a good ecological environment.

The all-round and sustainable building design “Elements” was selected by the city of Amsterdam as the winning design for the realisation in the new Amsterdam city district of Amsterkwartier. With its iconic, sculptural form, Elements completes the Amstelkwartier’s skyline. The Amstelkwartier has a pure urban design with clear ‘Amstelkoppen’ and sharp corners. Elements enriches the skyline of Amstelkwartier and Amsterdam with an elegant, solitary, 70-meter tall tower. With its light, all-round, metropolitan character, it relates to the other high-rise buildings, and forms a prominent and recognisable benchmark. Thanks to its unique sculptural character, it simultaneously obtains its own identity with multiple inviting faces, which shows a changing perspective from different angles. Sharp corners and setbacks are softened by the rounding of the horizontal lines and the play of light on the glossy and matte bronze-coloured materials.

We adopted this method to omit all things except for space and art, as they overpower everything else. And the temperament of space, and the ambience that people could feel are both guided by art. A space only with art serves as a spiritual haven and a sneakoscope into the spiritual world for ordinary people. The various problems and possibilities of art itself also bring feelings that vary from person to person in the unvaried space. Accordingly, the spatial ideology also varies from person to person.

WOWDSGN is a Nordic collection brand for home furnishing. The WOWDSGN Shanghai MixC Store is the first offline furniture store. It projects customers’ impressions of daily life on the interior to recall customers’ subtle perception and memory. Our idea applies a series of natural form, presenting the idea of “return to nature”, which coincides with Nordic furniture as well. The multiple arches offer independent bays which become a series of scenes. Arches reveal their spatial tension rather than structural and mechanical properties. In this case, we take the authority of geometric form and even transform it. The curved arch not only obtains spatial tension but also converge dramatic scenography through different directions. In addition, the material of the arches is inspired by Alvar Aalto’s bending woods. The cherry veneer coated with varnish was applied to the arches.

AC75 race boat Project Commissioner/Creator INEOS TEAM UK

INEOS TEAM UK has officially christened their America’s Cup race boat ‘Britannia’ from the team’s base in Auckland, New Zealand, three months before the start of racing for the 36th America’s Cup. The AC75 is a 75ft sailing hydrofoil monohull class, governing the construction and operation of the yachts to be used in the 2021 America’s Cup. There is the two-pronged challenge of developing the AC75 monohull foiling concept along with the twoskinned soft mainsail, writing a Class Rule – and then designing a race boat for the Defence. The AC75 combines extremely high-performance sailing and great match racing with the safety of a boat that can right itself in the event of a capsize. The ground-breaking concept is achieved through the use of twin canting T-foils, ballasted to provide righting-moment when sailing, and roll stability at low speed. The yachts also feature starboard topside longitudinal drums, a double-skinned semi-battened mainsail and no keel.
