At least one lucky puppy found a forever home Saturday, Aug. 24, during the Heart Animal Rescue event held at LuLu & BB’s Pet Market in downtown Decorah. Katie Houlihan, a director with the local nonprofit organization, said the event also yielded a couple more applications to adopt animals, which she found fulfilling.
helped an innocent animal become part of a loving, happy home is very rewarding.”
Houlihan said Heart Animal Rescue was founded in October of 2016 and mainly serves northeast Iowa but also serves southeast Minnesota and a bit in Wisconsin.
“Anyone in rescue is going to say that some days you just want to throw in the towel and call it quits,” she said. “Some days, in all honesty, are brutal, but we keep going because there are so many animals that need rescues and shelters to help them. The reward of knowing you
“Heart Animal Rescue takes in breeder-released pups and dogs, pups and dogs that a person may not be able to take care of anymore and unwanted kittens,” she said. “These animals go into foster homes and are cared for until they are ready to find their forever home and be adopted out. Heart Animal Rescue also has a trap, neuter, release program to help with the stray cat population.”
Houlihan said Heart Animal Rescue isn’t connected to area shelters or other rescue agencies, but the organization has established relationships with others who works in the field, allowing groups to aid one another. William Painter originally ventured through northeast Iowa in 1848, searching for sites on which he could establish water powered businesses. He established the original mill at what is now Dunning’s Spring Park, but he also constructed a mill near the intersection of what is now Heivley Street and Mill Street in Decorah.
Painter and his family set-
tled in the western half of the Decorah area in 1849 and soon began to harness the power of the nearby waterways for the mill, which has since become a downtown fixture within the city of Decorah. Painter created the mill in 1851, after creating a diversion dam and a mill race to direct water from the nearby river to the site. A pair of arches in the building’s southern foundation indicate water may have initially been routed under the building to power its machinery. Flour was first produced there in 1852, and it’s possible Painter — described as a master tinner and millwright — may have built his own water turbines from soldered sheets of copper. The building’s hip roof was replaced at some point between 1874 and 1890, providing a large loft space.
The original mill on that site had two floors as well as a loft and a basement. By 1858, Painter expanded his operation and surrounded the original

Sunny skies, kickball pop flies, raffle surprises and silent auction prizes were the perfect recipe for a grand slam at the sixth annual Kickin’ It Forward fundraiser Saturday, Aug. 24 in Festina. An estimated 400 people participated throughout the day, competing in the kickball tournament, spectating, enjoying a pulled pork dinner and taking part in the raffle and silent auction.
