Decorah community responds to anti-LGBTQ vandalism

residents interested in running for school board vacancies is 5 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 21). On or before that date, an affidavit of candidacy and nominating petitions with at least 50 signatures must be filed with the school board secretary at local districts. DCSD Board Superintendent Tim Cronin noted that the affidavit of candidacy and nomination petitions must be filed together or they are rejected. Copies of nomination papers are available at the school board secretary’s office, county auditor’s office, or at the Secretary of State’s website.iowa.gov.

Other area districts South Winneshiek School Board members Ron Hemesath and Craig Neuzil are incumbents and have both taken out papers, according to a South Winn spokesperson. Turkey Valley School District’s vacant school seats are Leon Shatek, Ernie Schmitt and Jody Steinlage. As of press time Wednesday, Steinlage and Don Manderfield have reportedly taken out papers for re-election. School board elections will be held Tuesday, Nov. 7.

The Decorah Police Department and the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office were notified Sept. 17 of multiple buildings in Decorah, as well as areas on the bike path, skate park and streets/alleys that were defaced and vandalized by spray paint during the overnight hours. An arrest has been made in the investigation. Initial reports indicated buildings were in the area of Broadway and Winnebago Street. The vandalism was reported at the Decorah Lutheran Church and the United Church of Christ, which has a prominent display at the front of the church with

five rainbow color doors labeled with the words “God’s doors are open to all.” There was also graffiti on the property of the courthouse across the street. Decorah law enforcement agencies reported the vandalism included “hate speech that was both shocking and criminal.” The reports of these crimes were taken seriously and both agencies worked diligently together, investigating, interviewing, serving search warrants and collecting evidence in this case. Suspects were quickly identified. As of Tuesday evening, an

individual has been charged in the investigation. espect and compassion continue to be the mission at newly-renovated Helms Funeral Home in Decorah. Scott and Teesha Helms of Decorah, the owners of the former Schluter-Balik Funeral Homes, purchased the historic Fjelstul Funeral Home business on Water Street from Scott and Ann Fjelstul last year. The Fjelstul family owned the business for generations prior. The Water Street funeral home location has a long history. In

1930, L.B. Willis and P.J. Ness (local undertakers) opened the funeral home in a private residence, and they were in a partnership for many years. C.F. Fjelstul acquired the business in 1936, and he changed the name to Fjelstul Funeral Home. The business became Steine Funeral Home in 1948. The name was changed to Olson Funeral Home for a time and was renamed the Olson-Fjelstul Funeral Home when Roger Fjelstul came into the business in 1959. Fjelstul and his son, Scott, took over the Fjelstul Funeral Home in the mid-
