ordic Fest in Decorah is a celebration of all things Scandinavian, but this year’s 56th Fest is also an opportunity to honor those community members who have provided distinguished service year after year. This week, the Nordic Fest Board released the names of the 2023 award winners to be honored at the Fest (July 27-29 in Decorah). Sue Sander has been named the 2023 Nordic Fest Skål Recipient. The 2023 Nordic Fest Grand Marshals are David and Gail Judisch. (submitted) Nordic Fest Board originally began in the middle of a haircut, with her hairdresser refusing to finish until Sue said “yes” to joining the planning efforts. Sue had just moved to the Decorah community and appreciated the early encouragement to get involved. That initial encouragement led to more than 2 decades of time, energy, and passion spent in nearly every Board position. Sue even was the Nordic Fest Board President three separate times — in 2003, 2009, and 2013. Sue shares, “I think people are afraid to get on the Nordic Fest Board. It was just as hard for me to decide when it was time to get off.” While Sue finally did decide to step away from the Board, she has continued to be an avid supporter of Nordic Fest – volunteering wherever she can lend
her time and talents to help the annual celebration continue. Sue appreciates the friendships, with area residents and repeat visitors alike, that have formed in her life as a result of her involvement. So what is Sue’s recommendation for making the most of Nordic Fest? Sue says, “Be out on the streets. Eat your way from one end of Water Street to the other!” Sue especially recommends trying rømmegrøt, her Favorite Nordic Fest food, and spending time in the Nordic Fest Beverage Garden, a space she helped establish in 2003. Vesterheim Commons Building Visit us online - www.decorahnewspapers.com soft opening during Nordic Fest The Vesterheim Museum renovation and construction of the Commons Building, part of their Strong Roots | Bold Future campaign to unify the Vesterheim campus from museum to Folk Art School, is going well and on schedule. Vesterheim President and CEO Chris Johnson noted they would be moving into the space by mid-July and holding a soft opening of the Commons Building over Nordic Fest at the end of this month with many folk art demonstrations to celebrate the new connections. The formal dedication of the new 7,600 sq. ft. facility, designed as the central welcome center of the campus, is slated for Saturday, Sept. 30. Designed as the new “front door” of the Vesterheim campus, they look forward to celebrating what took 90 years of property acquisition and years of planning (their first call to Snøhetta in 2017) to complete: a unified campus with unique
comfortable spaces for exhibits, community education and gatherings to become a complete destination, and connect an intercultural, intergenerational community both in-person as well as through remote digital access. Landscaping began in April with trees, bushes, rock features and outdoor space and peripheral lighting, in addition to creating spaces for community events outside as well as inside. Creating a natural outdoor space between the Museum, Commons and the Heritage Park helps tie the campus together, while offering outdoor spaces to enjoy the campus and nearby inspiration. Throughout the newest spaces, circular areas have been designed and built as glades – an open spot found in the forest. These glades allow for reflection, connection and focus on

Work on the Commons building was thoughtfully planned, and is nearing completion. Vesterheim has planned a soft opening of the building just in time for Nordic Fest, which starts Thursday, July 27. Both indoor and outdoor spaces, featuring wood as a main recurring theme, help tie the entire Vesterheim campus together along water street.
