The Winneshiek County Opioid Task Force has been granted $19,000 in opioid settlement funds by the county’s board of supervisors. The dollars are to be used at a local medication-assisted treatment — or MAT — clinic, which UCS Healthcare operates inside Northeast Iowa Behavioral Health’s office in Decorah. John Vagts, co-chair of county’s opioid task force, Detective Chris Wuebker, with the Win-

neshiek County Sheriff’s Office, and UCS Healthcare Chief Executive Officer Jen Pearson made their case for the funding Monday morning. “This is near and dear to my heart, because it actually works,” Wuebker said. “I’ve seen it first-hand. Being a detective and working through cases, we utilize the MAT clinic and make referrals to them, so it’s something that helps local law enforcement — to have a local resource that we know works.” Doctors began prescribing mass quantities of opioid pain

medications in the early 1990s, and many Iowa counties have begun receiving funds to treat opioid addiction as part of a 2021 legal settlement with pharmaceutical companies for more than $50 billion. The 2021 settlement agreement required 39 states to be paid varying amounts of money over 15 years. Each county in Iowa will receive annual payments, and Winneshiek County’s

Decorah Envirothon team headed to international contest after winning state BY ZACH JENSEN STAFF WRITER A group of five local high school students will proudly represent Decorah this July in Canada during the National Conservation Foundation’s international Envirothon competition at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta. Envirothon is an annual environmental and natural resources competition which challenges high school students to apply

science, problem-solving and teamwork to real-world ecological issues. Students rotate through hands-on stations focused on aquatics, forestry and prairie as well as soils and wildlife before presenting solutions to a current environmental issue. Decorah High School’s team — which goes by the name Load of Carp — consists of Hannah Arendt, Mason Myers, Lily Sandhorst, Amelia Wadsworth and Margret Zook. The

quintet won the state Envirothon championship April 28 at Granger and, as state champions, they will represent Iowa July 20-26 during the Envirothon national championship. “In the fall of 2024, 80 students signed up to get a better understanding of their environment by taking part in Envirothon,” said Decorah Envirothon

State athletic conference bill yet to reach governor’s desk Legislators still optimistic after sweeping bicameral support

BY SETH BOYES NEWS EDITOR Officials at the Decorah Community School District are keeping their eyes on a state bill which may help bring Dec-

orah’s student athletes under the umbrella of a new athletic conference — Decorah’s current conference is expected to dissolve next year, and the school is expected to compete as an independent district next year,

Save for football, athletic teams at Decorah High School are expected to compete independent of any state athletic conference next year, which has already made event scheduling more difficult than usual for school officials. State lawmakers approved a bill in March to address how conference affiliation changes are handled in Iowa, but that bill has yet to be sent to Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds for her approval. State lawmakers and local school officials are hopeful the bill will be among the many which are typically given to the governor near the conclusion of each legislative session. after earlier negotiations to join a new conference failed. House File 783 would establish a conference realignment committee to meet at least once every two years and consider requests from Iowa schools aiming to leave or join an athletic conference. The bill was approved by both the Iowa House and Senate in March —
