10 WEEKEND SPORTS WRAP-UP Tuesday, May 7, 2024

Decorah girls finish week 1-2 Getting a few matches in between rain showers last week, the Decorah girls’ soccer team (3-8) collected one win.

At home Thursday night, Union (6-9) came out blazing and had the Vikes on their heels for the first 10 minutes, scoring two goals. As the half wore on, Decorah started to gather themselves and made some attacks on offense. The second half was fairly even with one attack that looked like it would result in a goal, but through some miracle, the ball never crossed the goal line. Union sent one long shot from a wide angle that somehow did find the Vikes’ net in the second half. “Our girls need to come out of the gate with more fire — meet the challenge head on instead of always counter punching after being scored on,” said Coach Loren Hendricksen. Decorah had seven shots on goal with Nora Lesmeister and Ana Simon each sending a pair toward the net. With one apiece were Gabbi Dixon, Sara Johanningmeier and Vivian Searcy. Clara Hjelle came up with eight saves during her time in the goal. Saturday tournament In action Saturday at the Wa-

verly-Shell Rock tournament, the Vikes came away with a split day, defeating Regina Catholic (6-7) on penalty kicks and falling to Bondurant-Farrar. Coach Hendricksen noted that the game versus Regina was likely the Vikes’ best team performance this season. Decorah and Regina each scored a goal in the second half with Simon scoring for the Vikings. “The girls had good possession, good passing and good attacks. I felt we were controlling the game pretty well. An unfortunate mistake near the end allowed Regina to tie, but our girls came through in PKs to capture the win,” said the coach. Scoring PKs for the Vikes were Dixon, Johanningmeier, Lesmeister and Simon. Decorah had eight shots on the goal including three by Dixon and two by Simon. With one a piece were Johanningmeier, Lesmeister and Amelia Wadsworth. Game two was a stark contrast to the first as Decorah battled Bondurant-Farrar (6-9) with little energy to lose 7-0. “We seemed to have lost all the energy we had in the first game. Give Bondurant-Farrar credit for playing well, but we could have done much better. I think this grueling stretch of four games in five days caught up with us,” concluded Coach Hendrickson.

season, the Vikes were at North Fayette Valley Monday and will host Denver Thursday, May 9, at 5 p.m.

No. 4 Vikes shut out teams at W-SR tourney

The Decorah boys’ soccer team (12-3) showcased its strength on the pitch Saturday, winning a pair of matches at the Waverly-Shell Rock tournament. First up for the Vikings was Northeast Iowa United (012) which proved to be no competition. Decorah scored five goals in the first half and added four in the second to win 9-0. Game two was closer as Decorah defeated Hampton-Dumont-CAL (6-6) in a 3-0 battle, scoring once in the first half and twice in the second.
