(submitted photo) For the second year in a row, the Decorah boys’ tennis team will be at the team state tournament Thursday and Friday, May 3031, in Iowa City as part of the final eight teams standing in Class 1A. Hosting Aplington-Parkersburg Wednesday in the Class 1A Substate 3 final, the Vikings prevailed 5-1 over the Falcons. When a team reaches five wins the rest of the matches are pulled off the courts and the meet is considered over. “It was a hard fought match as expected but the boys played their best tennis of the season to date and prevailed. Aggressive net play and good serving kept the pressure on and helped lead to a victory,” said Coach Matt Anderson. The match ended in singles action with five of Decorah’s players defeating their opponents. At No. 1 Caden Branum topped Tate Neymeyer 6-3 and 6-2. Aidan Nalean-Carl-

son won 6-1, 6-3 over Seth Orta at No. 3. Winning 6-1 and 6-4 was No. 4 Keaton Nalean-Carlson over Keegan Bolhuis. Freshman Tristan Hunter topped Gabe Jacobson 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5, while Seth Bolson played in the No. 6 slot and won 6-4, 6-1 over Tommy Janssen. Liam Chamberlain, who was at No. 2, fell 6-4, 6-2 to Grant Wedeking. Singles/Doubles action ahead Seeded No. 2 in the state individual tournament, Decorah’s Caden Branum is looking to defend his title Wednesday and Thursday, May 22-23, at Byrnes Park in Waterloo. The senior’s first match will be against Mason Reicks of Kuemper Catholic. The doubles team of Liam Chamberlain and Aidan Nalean-Carlson will also be on the courts this week, taking on Pella’s Joshua Roozeboom and Cameron Rowe in first round action.

Tieskoetter combined with Tessa Phillips, Ava Franzen and Annie Hageman for a 14th place finish in the 4x800 relay. The quartet posted a time of 10:17.54. Junior Abby Wagner competed in a pair of field events. For the second time in her career, Wagner vied for the long jump title, finishing 14th at 15 feet, 8.25 inches. In the high jump, she cleared 4 feet, 10 inches to bring home 16th. On the track Saturday, Franzen made her debut as an individual in the 1500-meter run. The freshman posted a time of 5:12.65 to take 17th place. Friday, the 4x200 relay posted a season best time of 1:51.29 with a 22nd place finish. Members of the relay were Katie Shimek, Maddy Jansen, Allison Hageman Brady Ohrt anchored the Warrior and Cloey Zweibohmer. The distance medley quartet of Shimek, Al. Her leadership was an important key to many of the other girls on our team having the confidence to compete at the levels they did as well. We will really miss her leadership and that of our other seniors next year.

Boys on the track Making his first appearance at state in the high jump, Kaden Barton-Franzen was seeded 15th entering the meet. After clearing the bar at 5 feet, 11 inches, the junior finished 10th. Senior Parker Timp appeared in shot put for the first time at state, throwing the weight 45 feet 3.5 inches to claim 17th. Lukas Weiss was on the Blue Oval in the 110-meter hurdle prelims Friday, crossing the finish line in 16.46 seconds, good for 20th. For the second year in a row, Weiss, Timp and Barton-Franzen competed in the shuttle hurdle relay with Brady Ohrt replacing Keegan Streeter from last year’s quartet. The SW foursome combined for a time of 1:04.50 to finish 14th in the prelims.

For the girls “We were really pleased with how the kids competed at state,” said Coach Kevin Kearney. “We lost an awful lot of experience to graduation last year and then, in addition, had some of our key returners come up against injury/illness throughout the season. In spite of that, we were able to have 10 different girls qualify for the state meet in seven events. That was a huge accomplishment for this team. Nine of those 10 athletes return next year and they gained valuable experience in having the opportunity to compete at state this season.” Kaden Barton-Franzen took home Josie Tieskoetter closed out her career with her 10th in the high jump.

Gone next year Among those who graduated following the state meet are Josie Tieskoetter, Autumn Schmitt, Josie Tollefsrud, Aubrey Willey, Parker Timp, Brady Ohrt, Abe Conway, Chandler Riehl, Brody Tieskoetter and Casey Bohr.
