owa’s State Auditor said his time growing up in Decorah was a major inspiration when he first decided to work in public service, and he said he intends to remember the lessons he learned in his youth as he launches his bid for governor of Iowa.

Rob Sand announced his campaign on Monday, saying “for too long, partisan insiders have pushed Iowa in the wrong direction.” Sand was first elected as state auditor in 2018, and was reelected in 2022 — becoming the only Democrat to maintain a statewide elected position that cycle. He

previously served as an assistant attorney general under former Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller and was the lead prosecutor in a 2015 case exposing what became known as the largest lottery-rigging scheme in American history. Early announcements from Sand’s campaign listed underfund-

ed schools, the loss of job opportunities to other states and a lack of innovative growth as issues Sand hopes to address if elected governor of Iowa. The Decorah native

Kim Reynolds submitted a complaint regarding a statement the sheriff had written on Feb. 4 in response to public

concerns over immigration enforcement actions — the sheriff’s statement was posted to his office’s social media account and submitted to area news outlets for publication. The sheriff said in his statement that he views the use of non-judicially vetted detainers by agencies like the FBI or Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a violation of citizens’ rights under the Fourth and Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. “The only reason detainers are issued is because the federal agency does not have enough information or has not taken the time to obtain a valid judicial warrant,” Marx wrote. Marx’s statement also expressed his office’s willingness to assist in verifying the legitimacy of any paperwork federal agents may have. However, Marx said, if a federal agent’s

WinnMed’s Chief Administrative Officer Steve Slessor made mention in March of possible plans to purchase a da Vinci system, saying one of the rooms in the hospital’s soonto-be expanded surgical wing was designed to accommodate the sizable surgical tool. Slessor said last week the purchase would come at a cost of between $2.05 million and $2.65 million, depending on the specific model selected. “The da Vinci robot is a significant investment into our surgery department and, to pay for this piece technology, WinnMed will lease the equipment and pay for it over seven
