102 points and sent 10 events to state. The Vikings put together a good effort at the state meet. A pair of 10th-place finishes topped Decorah’s efforts as Kaiden Quandahl leaped 20 feet 11 inches in the long jump and the sprint medley of Johnson, Ben Wymer, Gates and Olson crossed the finish line in 1:34.82. Individually, Olson finished the 400-meter dash in 51.03 seconds, good for 13th. In the 4x100 relay, a time of 43.70 seconds was just on the outside of the finals. Members of that relay were Johnson, Quandahl, Wymer and Gates. That same quartet posted a time of 1:31.98 in the 4x200 relay to finish 16th. Gates was on the track in the individual 200-meter dash, posting a personal-best time of 22.98 seconds to earn 16th place, while Wymer was 22nd in the 100-meter dash in 11.72 seconds. In the 4x400 relay prelims, Gavin Groux, Olson, Trevor Kuennen and Brayden Hartl stopped the clock at 3:32.49 in 21st place. In the shuttle hurdle relay, Josh Adam, Tommy Sexton, Groux and Johnson went 1:03.71 for 22nd place. Peyton Webb got his first taste of state in the high jump but was unable to clear the opening height of 5 feet 11 inches. Following the conclusion of the season, four key members of the team graduated including Ben Wymer, Cade Olson, Brock Taylor and Jaden Baker.

A fine season Last year’s Vikings were young, with 25 of the 47 athletes as freshmen. However, that didn’t stop the squad from putting together a strong performance. At the Northeast Iowa Conference meet, the Vikes finished second with 140 points, just six points behind Waverly-Shell Rock. The Decorah boys won six events with Dakota Johnson winning a pair of hurdle events. As a junior, Johnson won both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles, in addition to anchoring the shuttle hurdle relay to gold and as the lead-off runner for the sprint medley relay. Kelley Gates broke the tape in the 200-meter dash with Cade Olson capping off the gold-medal performances in the 400-meter dash. At the state-qualifying meet, the Vikes finished third with

freshmen bring in 17 athletes looking to show their abilities as members of the Decorah track and field team.” With the large number of athletes, the depth is one of the team strengths on Coach Rollinger’s radar. Among his concerns is the need to convince the athletes of the value of field event point production. “We also need the guys entering events that don’t necessarily meet their ‘fancy’ but could help lead to team success,” added the longtime coach. “Finding that second point producing guy in the individual events will be important.” Anyone’s title Coach Rollinger believes all six squads in the Northeast Iowa Conference have a shot at capturing the team title this May, with the Vikings aiming to get back on the top of the podium. “Every team has some outstanding track and field athletes and it is always fun to watch the improvement and development of those athletes and teams,” he added. “Our goal is always to battle for a conference title. The NEIC is obviously going to look much different going forward after this season so grabbing the 2024 title would be sweet.”
