Trojan offense stifled at NH

Runs were hard to come by Friday night for the Turkey Valley baseball team (3-8, 3-4 UIC) as the Trojans fell to New Hampton (142, 8-0 NEIC) for the third time this season, 6-1.

Russell Nieman scored the lone run for the Trojans in the first after he doubled and Oliver Schmitt singled. Turkey Valley held on to the slim 1-0 lead until the Chickasaws plated three in the bottom of third, adding a run in each the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Nieman took the loss, throwing 3-1/3 innings, allowing five hits and four runs and striking out one. Logan Busta came in to throw in relief, striking out four.

Turkey Valley had just three hits with all three coming in the opening frame by Nieman, Busta and Schmitt.

“We put up a good fight, just need-

ed a few more runs. We just made a few too many mistakes in the field and I need to do a better a job of making sure we understand what the situation is. I love seeing these guys have each other’s back no matter what age and what situation we are in. It’s fun group to coach,” said Coach Dan Stepan.

Starting the week on the road Turkey Valley traveled north to Kee Monday night and will head south to Central Elkader Tuesday for a junior varsity/varsity doubleheader at 5 p.m. Thursday, the Trojans will host MFL MarMac at 4 p.m. start for the varsity.

On the road In a two tough conference games, the Vikes fell to Waverly-Shell Rock (12-4, 7-1 NEIC) in both matches on the road Wednesday.

Even with an outstanding pitching performance from senior Brady Bohner, who pitched six innings only giving up one run on three hits while striking out seven, poor defense (5 errors) was costly as the Vikings lost game one 4-3. The Vikings out hit the Go-Hawks 10-3.

Hartl, Meyer and Waskow all had two hits apiece.

After a slow start in game 2, the Vikings yet again found themselves in an early deficit trailing 6-0 after four innings. Vikings finally got on the board in the fifth scoring three runs thanks to a two-RBI double by Bohner followed by an RBI single from Kaden Alstad. Vikings added three more runs in the seventh and had the tying and go ahead runs on base but were unable to get them across. Vikings lost another close ball game, 8-6.

Alstad suffered the loss in the nightcap, giving up five runs on six hits and striking out four with Cash Riehle throwing in relief.

Decorah had five hits in game two, including the two-RBI double by Bohner to go with a single.

North Scott tourney The Vikes took a road trip to North Scott Saturday to compete in a pair of non-conference games, dropping both.

Decorah’s offense was smothered by Cedar Falls (8-9) in game one as the Tigers allowed just two hits — a pair of singles by Bohner in the first and third frames. Cedar Falls utilized nine hits to win 10-0 in five frames.

In game two, the Vikings jumped on the board early against North Scott (10-7), pushing six runs across home plate. However, in the bottom of the first inning, the Lancers answered the call with six of their own, adding three more in the second. After receiving a walk and stealing second, Decorah’s Garrett Waskow jumped on the opportunity to score on a pass ball in the third. At W-SR Thursday the Vikings were in conference action at Waverly-Shell Rock (7-4, 3-0 NEIC) dropping the varsity doubleheader, 5-2 and 3-2, on the road.

In game one, Decorah gave up four runs in the first to the Go-Hawks. It took until the sixth frame for the Vikes to plate their two runs when Jasera Tweten walked and advanced to second on a Lauren Luzum base hit. Lillian Olson drove in Tweten on her single with Luzum scoring on a Clara Hjelle fielder’s choice. Waverly-Shell Rock added one in the bottom of the same frame to conclude the scoring.

Decorah had six hits in the with doubles by Liz Bucksa and Hjelle. Tweten went 2-for3, while Luzum and Olson each provided a single.

The nightcap saw Waverly-Shell Rock score one in the second and one in the third on errors. The Vikes pushed Dylin Thompson across the plate after she walked and stole second, scoring on a pass ball in the sixth.

However, a solo Go-Hawk homer in the bottom of the sixth gave W-SR an insurance run.

Four home runs in efforts by SW girls

Despite losing the last six games, the South Winn girls softball team demonstrated its resilience and commitment to the game last week, pounding out four home runs in two games and collecting 41 hits in 4 games. It’s all about the next game, the next tournament.

Two homers It was a tough non-conference game Wednesday for the Warriors despite a pair of home runs as South Winn dropped the game, 6-3.

The Indians plated the first run in the bottom of the opening frame only to watch Warrior junior Britney Hageman send one over the fence in the top of the second to tie the score. Avery Humpal gave South Winn two more in the top of the third with a bomb of her own. However, that is all the scoring the Warriors would do as the Indians got one run back in the third and took the lead in the fifth with two more. Waukon ended the game with two in the sixth.

It was a tough outing for freshman Aubree Gesing in the circle as she gave up six runs on 12 hits and struck out five.

Another two zingers Thursday, South Winn picked up its third win of the season over Nashua-Plainfield (1-11), 11-7.

The Warriors wasted no time, launching a relentless offensive in the first inning. With two runners on the bases, Alyssa Holthaus set the tone with a powerful home run over the left-centerfield fence. Later in the same inning Addisen Kuennen raced around the bases for an in-the-park homer to give South Winn a 6-1 lead.

Nashua-Plainfield cut the lead to 8-7 going into the bottom of the third with a six-run frame of its own, but the Warriors shut the door on the Huskies, adding single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Striking out six, Gesing earned the win on the mound for the Warriors.

South Winn pounded out 14 hits in contest, led by Winings who went 4-for-4. Ad. Timp was 2-for-3 in the batter’s box and stole three bases, while Holthaus was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Friday and Saturday Typically a two-day tournament at Jesup, Saturday was rained out for the teams with Friday ending as a split for the Warriors.

The tournament opened against Monticello (3-7) for the Warriors as neither team plated a run until the third inning, and then it was an offensive explosion with SW scoring three times and Monticello seven. The Warriors managed two more in the fifth, as did the Panthers, resulting in a 9-5 loss for the Red and White.

Hageman led the offensive charge, going 2-for-2 and driving in one run, while Ad. Timp, Winings, Holthaus, Wagner and Willey all had one hit.

South Winn then rebounded to defeat North Fayette Valley (2-7, 3-1 UIC), 8-4.

The Warriors jumped on the board to lead 2-1 after the first inning, adding four runs in the second and two in the third.

Going 3-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases, Winings was the offensive threat for South Winn. Hageman pounded out a pair of doubles, while Humpal contributed one as well. Ad. Timp had the Warriors’ other hit.

Lady Trojans sweep Postville

The Turkey Valley softball team (2-8, 2-0 UIC) scored a combined 39 runs in Wednesday’s win over Postville; however, that offensive attack was lost Friday against Denver.

Two quick ones The Trojans jumped on the Postville Pirates (0-2, 0-2 UIC) in the early innings of the conference doubleheader Wednesday, winning 19-1 and 208, finishing both games in three innings at home.

In game one, Turkey Valley scored 12 runs in the first inning and added seven in the second, giving up just one to the Pirates.

TV only had five hits in the game but took advantage of 13 walks and five hit-by-pitches. Jenna Throndson had the hit of the night — a triple to drive in three runs. Layni Schuchhardt, Raelen Manderfield, Haylee Hanson and Alexis Elsbernd had the other hits for the Trojans.

In the nightcap, TV broke the game open in the first with seven runs; however, the Pirates weren’t going down as quietly as game one as Postville sent six runs across the plate in the second. Five runs by the Trojans in the bottom half of the second was too much for the Pirates to overcome as they put up two but allowed eight by TV in the third frame.

TV was held to four hits — two doubles by Elsbernd and one extra-base hit by Addison Lutgen. Karstyn Lukes connected for the other hit.

Defeated by Denver In action Friday night, the Denver softball team (4-6) jumped on Turkey Valley, defeating the Trojans in non-conference action, 13-1 in four innings.

Both teams got on the board with a single run in the first inning, before the Cyclones struck for nine in the second. Denver picked up another in the third and two in the fourth to end the game on the mercy rule.

TV had three hits in the contest, with Morgan Vsetecka connecting for two of them. Throndson had the other.

More ball This week is another busy week as Turkey Valley was at North Fayette Valley Monday and host MFL MarMac Wednesday for a varsity doubleheader at 5 p.m. Saturday, the Trojans will be on the diamonds at the New Hampton tournament starting at 9 a.m.
