Why would a nationallyknown cable television network select a Driftless area home to feature during a renovation for an upcoming broadcast?

Danielle Dotzenrod of Decorah credits the rich, significant history of her rural Decorah home, which dates back to the mid-1800s.

The details about the renovation are being kept top secret for the time being, as a production team completes filming.

Danielle grew up on her grandfather’s dairy farm in Winneshiek County. At age 16, she represented the United States in an international modeling competition. Her career blossomed, and after working as a fashion model in New York, she became a television host in Los Angeles. She has since returned to northeast Iowa and has been working on other renovation projects

in the area with her dad, Jimmy Dotzenrod. Those efforts have included the transformation of a 1973 train caboose into a rental property. Her company, BEHUMANE, sells leather to designers sourced from ranches having high animal welfare and regenerative agriculture standards.

Historical significance

The historical Horn House, which boasts an old ballroom, complete with original piano, has sat empty for the past several years, and the ongoing remodeling has been challenging.

Danielle said she spent the winter and spring months doing what she calls “destruction/discovery” and is now in “construction” mode.

“Everyone who has had the house has loved it, and they’ve done their best with improvements,” Dotzenrod said. “But it was time for a full-blown remodel.”

Dotzenrod is passionate about the historical importance of the residence.

“I’ve learned so much about this house,” she exclaimed.

“This is the only house of its kind on

the National Historic Registry in Winneshiek County that is situated in the rural countryside,” she said, “as opposed to being in Decorah or in town.”

The house was built by English immigrant Henry Harcourt Horn back in 1869. It is situated a few miles northwest of Decorah. The residence has a detailed, rich history. Horn wrote a book about settling here in Winneshiek County, and he penned several pages about the home’s construction. The book’s title is “An English Colony in Iowa” and tells the story of the voyage to America, the journey westward and much more. His riveting musings about the train ride to Chicago, Ill., and Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien, Wis., were capped by his first view of the mighty Mississippi River.

Horn’s travels by train ended in Ridgeway, where he found a “Concord Coach” waiting to take him and several other passengers on a one-hour

Inspired Skin Care connects faith with natural products

Ruth Boden of Waukon was inspired to share her talent for mixing scents and textures for custom skincare products when she started Ruth’s Gift.

“I realized God had given me a unique gift that allowed me to create this skincare line, and I could donate a portion of the proceeds to charities that help people,” Boden stated.

Inspired Skin Care was the product of that gift.

Her lip balm products have a spiritual and ethical intent attached to each tube. Aptly named Faith Sticks, they share her inspiration by providing an inspirational scripture on each tube.

“By incorporating a scripture into established daily routines, like applying lip balm, we consistently work on our connection to God,” she explained.

She also made sure the products were eco-friendly, with all-natural ingredients packaged in biodegradable, recyclable, renewable push up tubes. The products are all hand-made right here in the Driftless and are tested with friends and family and never with animals.

Find Ruth Boden at festivals and fairs across the Driftless, or Faith Sticks in Waukon at Say

Now and The Copy Shoppe. In Lansing they are at Coffee on the River or A Touch of Class

Beauty Salon.

“I hope to help people put faith on their lips, so we can talk right to the people we meet and carry out God’s plan for us all. We may be new to the area, but I am so glad we’re here – I love this town and this area,” Boden shared.

Future products in the works includes a line of body butters, with a portion of the proceeds of all her products to support charitable organizations. For more information, contact Ruth’s Gift at ruthsgift58@ gmail.com or visit their Facebook Page.

Two-day music festival begins Aug. 4

Two days of music, one epic stage and the scenic beauty of Spillville’s Riverside Park… this means only one thing: the Turkey River Music Festival is back Friday and Saturday, Aug. 4-5.

Offering a wide variety of music both days, the fest starts Friday night at 6 p.m., with a lineup of heavy metal and hard rock performers and bands gracing the outdoor Ludwig Stage. This is a rain or shine event, with the historic Inwood Ballroom as the rain location. Tickets available at the door for each night or a two-day pass is available.

Eight local and regional bands will regale audiences Friday, Aug. 4, from 6 p.m. to close, with the last band taking the stage at 11 p.m. The outdoor venue will offer on-site food, beer and drink tent, games and souvenirs, local vendors, camping on a first-come-first-serve basis, picnic tables, a horseshoe pit and plenty of room for lawn chairs around the stage. With two massive fire pits adjacent, plan to end the night with fire as a fitting tribute to the hard and heavy musical entertainment, sure to energize attendees and encourage more than a little head-banging for the Turkey River Music Festival kick-off.

Gates to the Riverside Park open at noon Saturday, Aug. 5. The day features a full and rich lineup of blues and rock musicians starting at 1 p.m. Joe and Vicki Price have traditionally kicked off day two of the TRMF, and this year is no different. Bands Saturday include Casey Klein, Noah & the Hitchhikers, Stoned Crow and the headliner, Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown.

For the full list of entertainers for the two-day Music Festival, visit turkeyrivermusicfest. com or follow their Facebook page. Proceeds from the fest go toward the Riverside Park and Inwood Ballroom, as well as continuing the TRMF.

Spring Grove Real Estate Fund plans to rebuild after hardware store fire

On March 16, the Spring Grove Real Estate Fund LP

(“Fund”) acquired three parcels of land in downtown Spring Grove after a catastrophic fire on Dec. 22, 2022, destroyed Mulqueen’s True Value hardware store, NAPA Auto Parts store and multiple apartment units. The Fund is made up of investors from Spring Grove, Minn., and Northfield, Minn.

In 1926, a disastrous fire destroyed the hardware store in downtown Spring Grove. Following the fire of 1926, a group of local community members understood the importance of having a hardware store in town, and they came together to rebuild it.

Like the Spring Grove citizens who rebuilt the hardware store in the 1920s, the Fund believes in the future of the community and is committed to rebuilding this site so that downtown Spring Grove will

thrive for the next 100 years or more.

The Fund is working on plans to rebuild a three-story, mixeduse structure that fits within the historic downtown feel of the community, with commercial space on the main floor and residential apartment units on the upper two stories. The building will be located on the footprint of the former hardware and auto parts store site.

The project is currently in the pre-development stage. While no timeline for construction has been determined yet, the Fund is currently working in partnership with multiple project consultants, the City of Spring Grove, and local leaders to put together a plan that best fits the needs of the community.

Migliore convicted, admits to stealing over $200,000

In a case spanning six years, Heather Migliore, 51, of Waukon, pled guilty July 19 to federal charges of wire fraud. According to the U.S. Attorney’s press release from July 21, per the plea agreement Migliore admitted that from January 2015 through November 2021, she stole no less than $200,000 from her employer, a tax preparation business with offices in Waukon and Decorah.

Migliore was the business’s office manager and had responsibility for its finances, including making payroll and paying bills. Migliore used a signature stamp of the owner of the business to write and sign checks to herself. To cover up her scheme, Migliore then deleted the checks from the business’s electronic bookkeeping system.

Beginning in July 2019, Migliore also made over $20,000 in fraudulent credit card charges on the business’s credit cards. Migliore used the stolen funds to pay her personal expenses.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Timothy L. Vavricek and was investigated by the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office.

This case against Migliore was initiated in April 2022 in Winneshiek County with charges of Unauthorized use of Credit Card over $10,000; Forgery – Use/Alter Forged Writing; Fraudulent Practice 1st degree; Theft 1st degree; and Ongoing Criminal Conduct – Unlawful Activity, all felony charges. The total dollar amount stolen was originally listed as $231,794.38.

Decorah Senior Center forges on for updated facility

The older we get, the more likely we need a bit of rehabilitation to keep us in tip-top shape. The same is being done for a much-loved building in Decorah – the Senior Hospitality Center.

The leadership group of the Decorah Senior Citizens Hospitality Center is forging ahead with rehabilitation and modernization plans to ensure the center can continue to meet the needs of seniors for years to come.

After careful assessment of the site and fundraising efforts spanning the past year, the project has taken roots with work starting last week on construction of the ADA-compliant restrooms at the center. Work will continue over the next month and is possible due to the $67,000 that had been raised – a portion of the total fundraising goal of $300,000 to not only bring the facility up to code for those with disabilities, but also make it an enjoyable and engaging community space for area seniors.

Fifty thousand dollars of the total goal has been dedicated to the complete rehabilitation and reconstruction of the facility’s restrooms. Both restrooms will be gutted, and demolition started last week. The center will be closed during construction.

New stalls and restroom access doors will be installed to ensure the facility is compliant and accessible for people, whether they are in a wheelchair, or any other assistive mobility device.

The front entrance will also be shown some much-needed

love, with updated guard rails on the handicap-accessible ramp, and a wider exit door for accessibility to meet code compliance. Both of these upgrades are part of the $17,000 general repairs phase of the project to be completed at the same time.

For all other phases, funds are currently being accepted to help address rehabilitation of the kitchen, roof, windows, ceilings and new flooring. The center will reopen once construction for this phase is complete. There are plans for a few day trips, however, possibly even to Cedar Falls. Follow their Facebook page for details and dates.

The building itself, purchased for the senior center in 1977 and renovated at that time, was originally the DECO factory before they moved into their larger space. Over the years it has served the senior community well with a wide range of activities, including being the location for the senior meal site for many years and being an active hub of for events and get-togethers, including offering community rentals for special events.

The facility is a home away from home for people from Winneshiek County, as well as folks from Minnesota, Fayette County and as far away as Riceville.

Senior Center Volunteer and Coordinator Gerry Sorenson noted on Facebook, “How long will we be closed??? Not sure, construction doesn’t always work out like we plan. We hope to keep everyone informed about activities, places and times. We still want to have as many of our activities as we

After a month-long joint investigation by Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and West Union Police Department, a series of 10 drug narcotic search warrants were executed the Week of July 11-14. On July 11, at approximately 3:20 a.m., a Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputy encountered an individual who drove up to the deputy at the Elgin Fire Department. An investigation was conducted, and the driver of the vehicle, Ryan Smith, age 29, of Elgin, was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated, a serious misdemeanor. West Union Drug Canine and Officer were requested, in which the drug canine indicated on Smith’s vehicle. A search warrant was executed on Smith’s vehicle, and distribution amounts of methamphetamine, multiple grams of marijuana, and a scale were found and seized. Smith was additionally charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, a class B felony, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, 2 counts of possession of a controlled substance, class D felonies, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.

An additional narcotics search warrant was executed later that day at Smith’s residence at 608 Mill Ave., in Elgin by Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and West Union Police Department.

During a search of the residence more methamphetamine, marijuana, and paraphernalia were found and seized. Bryon Smith, age 61, of Elgin, was charged and later arrested with possession of methamphetamine 1st offense, possession of marijuana 1st offense, serious misdemeanors, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. Ryan Smith was additionally charged with felony drug possession.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s

Office, West Union Police Department and Drug Canine, and Iowa State Patrol executed two more drug related search warrants July 12 at the building of 125 S Vine St. Apt .2, West Union, and 116 E Elm St. Apt. 102, West Union.

During the execution of the warrants, numerous controlled substances including heroin, morphine, methamphetamine, THC wax/marijuana, ledgers, scales, loaded syringes, pill crushers, baggies, and other paraphernalia were found and seized. Jeff Blue, age 51, of West Union, was arrested and charged with possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, a class B felony, possession with intent to deliver morphine, class C felony, possession of heroin, possession with intent to deliver mar-

can. We are making progress and are moving forward.”

But no one is taking this as a time to rest, “While we are shut down, our fundraising for the next phase will start refreshed. Any ideas, volunteers and leadership are appreciated. We are trying our hardest, but we haven’t really been trained for this line of work. We have the desire to turn our Center into the fresh and safe place we like to gather with our families and friends.”

The Senior Center has received great community support from donors as well as local services donating their time and energy with the rehabilitation project. It’s good to be able to give back to the center that has partnered with so many local groups and businesses over the years. Once construction is complete, they have paint through the Paint Iowa Beautiful grant to finish the restrooms.

To spearhead the next phase of rehabilitation, the center leadership held a quilt raffle, a garage sale and accepted community donations as they took bids to have the commercial appliances removed from the center’s kitchen area for future replacement. To date, they are currently seeking an additional $230,000 to fully fund the next phase of rehab and get the Senior Hospitality Center back to optimal performance.

For more information on the project, plans or to donate, contact 563-277-1033, email senchc1033@gmail.com, or use that email for payments via PayPal or Zelle, or mail a check to Senior Citizens Hospitality Center, 806 River St., Decorah IA 52101.

From your next-door neighbor to that one down on main street, a face you see around town or a name you hear over and over, these are your Driftless Neighbors.

While she doesn’t have an exact count, it’s safe to say Brenda Kurth of Luana has been a familiar face to thousands of young dancers in the Driftless Region. For 42 years, “Teacher Brenda” has been owner/instructor at Brenda’s School of Dance, instructing ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and tumbling to dancers ages three to 18.

Growing up in Harmony, Minn., she danced at the Barb Johnson Dance Studio. In exchange for lessons, her mother sewed some of the costumes, a talent Kurth inherited, as her and a friend have created many of her own dancers’ costumes over the years.

“Brenda’s School of Dance had been my dream since I was a little girl, my teacher was our neighbor with a studio in her home and her daughter was one of my best friends growing up. We were always dancing and hanging around the dance studio,” explained Kurth.

With the help of that neighbor/dance teacher, she got started teaching on her own.

“My first year teaching dance started in the New Albin Elementary School lunchroom with 25 students one day a week.

I remember being so excited. The next couple years I spread my wings as much interest was shown and started teaching five days a week in all the surrounding areas,” Kurth continued.

As if teaching a room full of youngsters wasn’t challenge enough, she added a daddy daughter/son performance to the recital. For the last 20 years, fathers (and father figures) have shown up once a week each spring for dance practice. Kurth possesses some kind of magic that she can take a pack of farmers, plumbers, accountants, mechanics, chefs and more, and turn them into dancers. Dear reader, let me tell you, the highlight of each recital truly is the smile on those kids’ faces when they are up on stage with their dancing dads. Every parent, grandparent, caregiver, etc., that walks their tiny dancer into one of her classes can see her enthusiasm and love for what she does.

“Seeing the kids every week, watching them learn and improve. The recitals at the end of each year. I have watched many students grow from really young into adulthood. Having the summers off and planning for the next year. Being my own boss,” Kurth listed everything she enjoys most about the job.

“I have the biggest and best support group of family and friends that show up and help me out every year with the recitals. I couldn’t do it without them. I am blessed,” she concluded.

When she’s not coaching arabesques, pirouttés and pliés, she enjoys walking, relaxing in the sun and spending time with her husband Lyle, their six children and 14 grandchildren. This fall

Minnesota Stringwood Young Artists concerts set

The Stringwood Young Artists will once again be in Spillville for their annual chamber music concert performing a free and open-to-all chamber music concert Saturday, Aug. 12, at 3 p.m., at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. The group of eight students will perform several pieces, including Antonin Dvorak’s Piano Quintet, which is considered a masterpiece for piano, two violins, viola and cello.

Of the eight students, six are from Iowa in 2023. Each year Stringwood accepts 40 young artists ages 12-22 from Minnesota, Iowa and across the country for a three-week intensive residency at the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center near Lanesboro, Minn.

They typically perform six concerts in the summer at regional venues, while learning from master musicians and honing their craft. These performanc-

es are part of the Stringwood Chamber Music Festival, which includes concerts and master classes. These concerts will take place between Aug. 11-20 throughout Minnesota, including several from Lanesboro, and the one in Spillville, where composer Antonin Dvorak spent the summer of 1893.
