Never a dull moment at the food truck
Ole and Lena’s Kitchen brings a taste of Norway to the Driftless
A dream of his youth, Bob and Sheri Erickson of rural Waukon dove into the food truck business on a leap of faith, and have been guided through the process every step of the way.
“I believe God had a plan for us and this food truck,” Bob stated, “because everything just fell into place when it needed to.”
Bob, an accountant, banker, consultant and faithful volunteer, noted his dream started with his first bite of a Pronto Pup – a precursor to corndogs, with more flour than cornmeal and a thinner batter – at the Minnesota State Fair his junior year in high school. He wanted to be one of the vendors there selling this delicious product, but “life opens other avenues,” added Sheri.
Bob went to college, became a banker, married Sheri as a student of physical therapy and they had two daughters, Heather and Hillary.
“It was never out of his mind, this dream of owning a food truck with Pronto Pups, but this was definitely not planned,” Sheri reported.
Bob said, “It just happened. It started about 2-3 years ago. It’s so easy when you retire to fall into a very simple routine focused on the rigors of daily life, taking care of the ‘I’ and the ‘me.’ But that’s not pushing you to learn, grow or to care about others. And that’s what we set out to do.”
Bob noted it wasn’t that they didn’t analyze the opportunity before making the somewhat quick decision to dive into the

food truck. “It’s just that I always tend to look for more than one way to make things work. When you do something, and don’t know how it should be done, then you can come up with creative and unique solutions that maybe have never been tried before.”
The pair described each other. Bob said about Sheri that “she can’t sit idle, she’s always got to be learning or doing something.” Sheri went back to school to obtain her doctoral degree. She also holds several certifications, specialty physical therapy designations and even obtained her certification as a Healing Touch practitioner.
Sheri added that Bob “is so creative with his ideas. He always has ideas (sometimes crazy ones) but always exciting.”
Their daughter Heather Erickson-Weigle laughed, noting, “My dad knows a lot about the word ‘and’ but not about the word ‘no.’ The greatest gift I got from both my parents, but especially my dad was: there was
‘Biggest Little Fair in Iowa’ Winneshiek County Fair July 11-15
By Roz Weis
The best of smalltown life is celebrated at the Winneshiek County Fair each year.
The county fair starts months before the actual fair itself, with local organizers hard at work bustling in preparations for the five-day festival.
The Winneshiek County Fair wouldn’t be as successful without the dedication of local volunteers, law enforcement, sponsors and donors – all providing prizes, hours of elbow grease and more to keep the fair running smoothly.
This year’s fair is jam-packed with activities July 11-15, featuring everything from local entertainment and baking contests to talent shows, grandstand events, 4-H and FFA displays, livestock shows, midway rides and much more.
The Winneshiek County Fair was among the Blue Ribbon Fairs announced last December at the Iowa Association of Fairs Conference. The award honors fairs supporting the community and making improvements to make their fair one of the best in the state.
Award winning fair Last December, Winneshiek County Fair was among the Blue Ribbon Fair honorees announced during the Iowa Association of Fairs conference. The annual award pays tribute to fairs supporting the community and making improvements to make their fair one of the best in the state.
Fair Board member Becky Winkler said, “One of the reasons we were selected from the Northeast District was the addition of the new Community Building and other improvements made to the fairgrounds, and our commitment to the youth of Winneshiek County.”
Grandstand events
never an idea that was not a possibility. He’s always managed to stay mentally between the ages of eight and 28. Going into one of the most volatile businesses with no experience, buying a food truck and figuring it out as you go. That’s how he works.”
And so, as a nod to their heritage – both claiming Norwegian ancestors – and to the connections of the people who were there at just the right time to not only provide what they needed to make the dream come alive but also sage advice, guidance and expertise to help them be successful, “Ole and Lena’s Kitchen” was born.
Jokingly Bob said with a smile, “of course, everyone 75 years old wants to start up a food establishment in a trailer. Everything just seemed to fall into place. After months of searching, we found the perfect food truck builder in a man
And who could forget the food at the fair? Between the Cattlemen, the pork producers, the dairy folks, the 4-H Clover Café, the Luren Singers food stand and the midway, there are plenty of opportunities to feast during the fair.
For seasoned fairgoers,
there’s nothing quite like walking the fairgrounds and checking out all the livestock and displays while wrapped in the tempting scents of grilled burgers, pork-chops-on-a-stick, funnel cakes and freshly-popped popcorn.
Hands-on demonstrations, kids’ activities, and grandstand entertainment galore round out the fair schedule this year.
This year, the grandstand events start with the opening ceremonies and fair queen coronation Tuesday, July 11, at 3 p.m. Also included during that ceremony will be presentation of the honor guard with the local VFW and the annual

“The reception has been very good. We have been quite busy since we opened our doors last month. I am very impressed with the support we have received from Mabel and the surrounding area,” said Joe Houdek.
Houdek opened Joe’s Pizza Palace and Pub in Mabel recently and area residents have been coming by in droves to enjoy great pizza and numerous
If the initial response is any indication, Mabel-area residents have been “chomping at the bit” to have Houdek open his doors.
Houdek bought the former Highway 44 restaurant when it went out of business five years ago. Instead of taking it over and continuing to operate it as is, he decided to completely rehab the aging restaurant.
“I had been buying and flipping houses for a number of years and thought about the Highway 44 when it went up for sale,” he recalled. “Someone told me I couldn’t pull this
type of project off. I guess that spurred me on,” he said with a grin. Houdek lives on a farm near Cresco, where he finishes beef cattle when he’s not rehabbing and managing a restaurant.
Breathing new life into the old building was certainly a challenging endeavor. But Houdek took his time, and worked with some Amish artisans, who helped transform the old diner into a very attractive venue. The kitchen was completely redone, with all new appliances. The Amish carpenters

Enjoying a Sunday Service on the last day of the Allamakee County Fair, fairgoers attend the 2022 Barn Praising church service offered to the community and folks showing animals or working shows at the fair. County fair hosts Sunday ‘Barn Praising’ July 23
With so many people involved in the full week’s events of the Allamakee County Fair – scheduled July 19-23 – organizers invited Waukon’s Iron Ridge Church co-pastors to offer a Sunday service in the barn for those who don’t want to miss their Sunday services or the final day of the fair.
accepted the invitation, bringing with their band and a mobile sound system from a partnership with Village Creek Bible Camp. The contemporary church service in the fair’s main barn welcomes any and all fairgoers and locals to a truly unique and faith-filled church experience. Since the first service was held prior to the new Allamakee County Fair barn being built,
they dubbed the special service a “Barn Praising.”
Now in its third year, Barn Praising is held the last Sunday of the fair week in the barn.
“Anyone interested in attending is welcome, whether they are already at the fair, or even just to come to the service,” noted Mincks. “We try to keep the fair theme going, and last year, the band played “God’s Country”
as part of the service. We love to support the community and really enjoy this opportunity.”
The service will be held Sunday, July 23, at 10 a.m., in the Show Barn at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon. For more information on the fair, visit www.allamakeecountyfair.org. For more information on Iron Ridge Church, visit Ironridgechurch.com.
Star City Film Festival in Lansing
The 5th Annual Star City Film Festival has been scheduled, this time with new Lansing locations: The Red Barn Resort and TJ Hunter’s. Sacred Noise Society founder, actress, producer and director Katie O’Regan will showcase her 2022 film, “Painting Jane,”
during the festival. She noted that this film festival would be dedicated to her late father, Francis O’Regan. An adaptation of the play
“Good Morning, Miss America,” written by Portland, Ore., artist Phyllis Yes, O’Regan’s film, “Painting Jane,” portrays Jane Nelson, Portland artist and art professor, as she tries to navigate living across the country from her parents going through the major health problems and major past family issues. This year’s film festival brings together the work of 40 filmmakers and script writers, with more than half the filmmakers planning to attend the star-studded event.
Festival schedule
Friday, July 14: Check-in for festival attendees and a meetand-greet with filmmakers begins at 5:30 p.m., at The Red Barn Resort. “Stories at Sunset”

We found the equipment, the education and certification, the sign on the trailer, the suppliers – most are local people – and we’ve had such a great connection with the folks coming by Ole and Lena’s Kitchen. There’s no logical sense to it, but I think God has a plan for this trailer.”

This will be a new television pilot casting Katie O’Regan, which was filmed in April. The cast and crew of the pilot series will be at the festival.
Script readings continue until 9:30 p.m., when the feature film, “Reveille,” by Michael Akkerman will be screened on an outdoor screen.
Saturday, July 15: Films will be screened all day, beginning at 9:30 a.m., at T.J. Hunter’s Banquet Hall and will continue until 6 p.m. Beginning at 2 p.m. at Lansing Office Works, four feature films will be screened, as well. Film fest attendees may

A red-carpet event with full glamour and dress begins at 6 p.m., at T.J. Hunter’s Banquet Hall. At 6:45 p.m., the feature film, “Painting Jane,” produced and directed by Katie O’Regan, will be screened, followed by a special guest music performance with dance music. An after-party will cap off the evening.
Sunday July 16: Coffee on the River and a breakfast with filmmakers will be held, details to be determined. Beginning at 9:30 a.m., T.J. Hunter’s Banquet Hall will host two more film screenings with talkbacks. An awards ceremony will begin at noon at the Banquet Hall and will conclude the film festival. Bob said matter-of factly, “Without roots, you’re just blowing in the wind. Giving young people these roots of their heritage is essential. Giving opportunity to others through Ole and Lena’s Kitchen is a plan we are working on.” Sheri added, “celebrating our heritage and the family and
Waukon Feed Ranch HR Manager Michelle Wood stays busy taking care of a wide range of duties for 200 employees in a wide diversity of positions and responsibilities. As a wife, mother, gardener and crop and beef farmer, she’s always active and keeping both home and company humming along splendidly. Moving back to the area after getting her Ag Business degree was important to the Wood family, who cherished the quality of life found here.
Staying busy at the Waukon Feed Ranch
Meet Michelle Wood, Human Resources Manager at Waukon Feed Ranch (WFR). She has her hands full at the company, which employs around 200 people between all their different lines of service, managing licenses, certifications, trainings and more.
“The name is kind of misleading,” Wood noted, “it started as a family-owned and operated feed mill, but the family has grown the operations to meet many needs, and that’s just one of many parts of the business today.”
Wood grew up just outside the city limits of Waukon on her family farm and has always known about the WFR. When she attended Iowa State University in Ames for Ag Business, she took the opportunity to intern with the previous HR Manager, Nancy Everman. After graduation, she wanted to return to Allamakee County because of her interest in agriculture, enjoyment of outdoor activities the area has to offer, and ability to be close to family. After graduation in

friends we’ve been connected to in Norway and here, that’s what this is about, the old times and new experiences.”
For now Bob and Sheri (when they aren’t volunteering elsewhere), and Heather and Hillary and their families are enjoying working in the food truck; connecting with people all across the driftless; serving quality local food and beverages, as well as compassion and connection. For more information, or to invite them to an event, contact olkitchen@goacentek.net or phone 563-4198616.
2017, she applied for the position from which Everman was retiring, with about a year of overlap so she had a great foundation to know the position and responsibilities she took over in 2018.
“It’s a lot of coordination due to the diversity of operations,” Wood stated about her position. The company manages eight different farms with hog operations on contract in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. They produce and deliver many different blends of feed, manage grain shipments and deliveries as well as storage, a full line of agronomy and crop nutrition products including a drone applicator, a fuel station, LP delivery, a mechanic shop, a construction business and both short and longhaul trucking.
For Wood, that means managing not only employee information and personnel coaching, but managing certifications, licenses, physicals and trainings for CDL drivers, safety trainings for all departments, rules and regulations in multiple states and management of benefits. She also oversees the payroll manager and handles some public relations activities for the company. Making things a bit more complex, the company has people moving into the state from across the country to work with them through work visa programs and is beginning to offer this externally to other farmers in the area.
“It’s important to make sure when we bring new people into the community that they become well acclimated and have all the resources to succeed here. With Waukon Feed Ranch being family owned and locally operated, it is very important to our whole team to be involved in the community, we especially like to support youth in agriculture,” she noted.
That’s a big job in a family-owned business that focuses on growth to meet farmers’ needs in the area. In her spare time Wood, the mother of twoyear-old Hudson, farms with her husband, Taylor, growing crops, gardening and raising beef cattle for farm direct sales.
“We farm mostly at night and on weekends on our 240 acres we bought from Taylor’s Grandma in 2018,” she added.
She is also currently serving as secretary on the Allamakee County Economic Development and Tourism Board. Keeping busy is status quo for Wood, something not likely to change anytime soon.

The Lanesboro Area Chamber of Commerce (LACC) recently announced the hiring of Melissa Vander Plas as its next executive director.
Decorah Food Pantry Board president Georgie Klevar (l) was giving a tour of the new food pantry space in the Spectrum Network building to Theresa Lynch of Decorah Saturday. Many attendees were impressed by not only the highly organized space, but the proficient systems in place to serve friends and neighbors in the community who are food insecure. They were also signing up volunteers for the pantry that day. The mural, painted by a Luther College Student volunteer, embodies the role of the food pantry in the community.
The City of Decorah’s asphalt overlay program is scheduled to begin in early July and will improve approximately 12 blocks of city streets during the 2023 construction season. The goal of the program is to target streets that would benefit from an asphalt overlay to extend the life of the existing pavement. Included will be milling/ grinding the existing pavement surface and repaving the streets for a safer and smoother ride as well as miscellaneous replacement of curb and gutter, sidewalk improvements (including ADA compliance updates), a new retaining wall and replacement of concrete steps.
Property owners will not be assessed for work associated with the asphalt overlay program. Instead, the program is funded with monies from the city’s Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) and the Electric Franchise Fee. This year’s program
is expected to cost approximately $700,000.
The following streets are scheduled for a partial or complete asphalt overlay this construction season:
• Intersection of Montgomery Street and Highway 9
• Center Street from High Street to Pool Street
• Day Street from Pearl Street to Broadway Street
• Pleasant Avenue from 918 Pleasant Avenue to Day Street
• Broadway Street from Winnebago Street to Court Street
• James Court
Residents that live adjacent to the projects will be notified regarding any street closures or if access to properties will be limited during construction.

Tractor and Farm Safety Training for youth
By Katie Drewitz, University of Minnesota
Extension
University of Minnesota Extension is offering Youth Tractor and Farm Safety Training at four locations including Rushford, Minn., this summer. The youth tractor and farm safety certification program provides youth 14 years and older the opportunity to learn about safe equipment operation and general farm safety. Students who complete the program are eligible to receive a U.S. Department of Labor certificate of training, required for 14 and 15-year-olds who wish to work on farms as employees.
Youth under the age of 16 cannot legally perform these tasks as an employee unless the youth has completed the National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program (NSTMOP) and received certification, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Hazardous Occupations Order in Agriculture. In Minnesota, there are, legally, no requirements for a child working on their family’s own farm. Although it is not required by law, it is highly recommended that youth working on their own family farm also complete certification to establish a strong understanding of safe tractor operation and other safety practices on the farm.
This hybrid training includes an online course on the National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program learning objectives and two days of in-person training that include tractor operation instruction in a safe learning environment. The online course takes 8-10 hours to complete and can be done at the participant’s own pace. After completing the online course, participants attend a two-day in-person training with handson instruction. All sections of the online course must be completed prior to attending an in-person session.
Local in-person training days are scheduled for Aug. 1-2, at Hammell Equipment and American Legion Post 94 in Rushford. The cost to take this course includes all materials and meals on training days. Scholarships are available to ensure all students who want to complete the training can do so. Contact Katie Drewitz or Tanner Marquardt for more information. Additional information and registration can be found at z.umn.edu/TractorSafety. Residents in Fillmore and Houston counties can call 507-765-3896 or 507-725-5807.

TV softball finishes UIC season on high note
By Logan Manderfield
In the final week of competition, the Turkey Valley softball team (12-19, 11-5 UIC) swept Clayton Ridge in a conference doubleheader Wednesday and dropped its final game of the regular season to Sumner-Fredericksburg Thursday.
Friday, the Trojans hosted Central Elkader in the first round of Class 1A playoff action. The winner will face North Linn Wednesday, July 5, at 7 p.m., in Troy Mills. The regional semifinal is Friday, July 7, at 7 p.m., at North Linn, with the regional finale Monday, July 10, at 7 p.m., at the highest remaining seed.
SW claim share of UIC title
For the first time since 2004, the South Winn softball team (19-14, 14-2 UIC) claimed a share of the Upper Iowa Conference title after sweeping Kee (15-17, 12-4 UIC) at home Wednesday, 3-2 and 8-5. Going 14-2 in the UIC, the Warriors share the top spot with North Fayette Valley.
Game one was a nail biter that was too close for comfort for the Warriors. The red and white got on the board with two runs in the second, and held Kee in check into the fourth frame when the Hawks scratched a run home. Kee tied it up in the fifth; however, South Winn managed to plate the final run of the game in the bottom half of that frame, and kept the Hawks from threatening any further in the final two innings to claim the 3-2 win.
In the nightcap, Kee took the lead in the third inning, 2-0. South Winn got one run back
in the fourth, then went on an offensive onslaught in the fifth and sixth, combining for seven runs. The Hawks were down and out yet as the visitors managed to score three in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough as South Winn won game two, 8-5. The Warriors combined for 14 hits in the two contests, led by senior Morgan Kriener who went 5-for-8 on the night with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Britney Hageman provided a double, two singles and drove in two.
Now the playoffs
With the regular season wrapped up, South Winn has a first-round bye in the Class 2A Region 6. The Warriors first game will be at Osage Wednesday, July 5, at 7 p.m. The regional semifinal will be held at Wapsie Valley Friday, July 7, at 7 p.m., with the regional final scheduled for Monday, July 10, at 7 p.m., at the highest remaining seed.
Clean sweep
The Trojans took on the Clayton Ridge Eagles (8-21, 5-12 UIC) for the last two conference games of the season Thursday on the road. The Trojans took both contests, scoring a combined 30 runs.
In the game one, the Trojans got out to an early four-run lead at the top of the first inning. At the bottom of the second inning, the Eagles crossed the plate twice, making the score 4-2. The Trojans scored next, extending their lead by a single run. At the bottom of the fourth inning, the Eagles brought the lead down to just two runs. However, the Trojans responded by scoring three runs at the top of the fifth inning. The Trojans also scored two more runs over the course of the next two innings, while the Eagles were only able to score once, making the final score 10-4 in favor of the Trojans.
Senior pitcher Sierra Morris earned the victory after pitching a complete game, giving up just one earned run. On offense, the Trojans were led by senior first baseman Aubrey Hoffert, who had two hits.
The Trojans went on a tear to start game two, scoring seven runs at the top of the first inning. However, by the time the fifth inning rolled around, the game was tied, 7-7. While the Eagles did not have a big inning like the Trojans did, they were consistent, scoring two, two, two, and one over the course of the first four innings. At the top of the fifth inning, the Trojans once again took the lead, making the score 117. The Trojans also scored another run at the top of the sixth inning, extending their lead to five runs. However, just like earlier in the game, the Eagles came back, tying the game at 12 runs each. Unfortunately for Clayton Ridge, Turkey Valley had another massive inning, crossing the plate eight times at the top of the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-out grand slam by Clare Courtney.
The Eagles were only able to score twice at the bottom of the inning, giving the Trojans a 2014 victory.
Junior pitcher Halle Weber was awarded the victory after pitching five innings. On offense, the Trojans were led by senior designated hitter Clare Courtney, who had four hits, including a home run and six runs
It was a shorter game in the regular season finale Thursday as the Trojans played the Sumner-Fredericksburg Cougars (25-6) at home. The Cougars ended the game after the fifth inning, taking a 12-1 victory.
The game started with Sumner-Fredericksburg taking a three-run lead at the top of the first inning. At the top of the third inning, the Cougars doubled their lead, making the
score 6-0. At the bottom of the third inning, the Trojans scored their only run of the game after senior first baseman Aubrey Hoffert drove sophomore Kinsey Reicks, who was put into the game as a courtesy runner, across the plate. The Cougars scored another run at the top of the fourth inning and crossed the plate another five times at the top of the fifth inning. Since Turkey Valley was unable to bring Sumner-Fredericksburg back within nine runs, the game ended after the fifth inning with a 12-1 scoreline in favor of the Cougars.
Senior pitcher Sierra Morris of Turkey Valley was credited with the loss, while junior centerfielder Mariah Throndson led the Trojans on offense with two hits.

Trojans post first winning regular season in 5 years
By Logan Manderfield
On Wednesday, the Turkey Valley baseball team (14-13, 11-7 UIC) played the Riceville Wildcats (7-15 overall) for the
last game of the regular season for both teams. Turkey Valley cruised to victory, giving the Trojans their first winning regular season in five years.
After both teams failed to
score in the first inning, the Trojans scored the first run of the game at the top of the second inning. At the top of the third inning, the Trojans offense took off, scoring seven runs, making the score 8-0.
right fielder Chase Hayek led the Trojans on offense, reaching first base in all four plate appearances, including three walks.

Wondering where the playoff games stories from Friday and Saturday for South Winn and Turkey Valley, along with Friday’s games for Decorah baseball and softball are?

Go-Hawks too much for South Winn Warriors
The South Winn baseball team (20-10, 16-2 UIC) traveled to Waverly-Shell Rock on Thursday evening for a non-conference matchup against the NEIC regular season champion.
The Go-Hawks gained control early scoring four runs in the first inning and put up six runs over the next four innings to gain the 10-run rule victory. Parker Timp battled for four in-
nings on the mound and was the bright spot offensively going 2-2 at the plate.
“We knew we would be facing a very solid opponent this evening and unfortunately did not put it together with any consistency to be competitive.
It is a great opportunity to take on solid opponents down the stretch and prepare for postseason play,” said Coach Alex Smith.
The winner of that game will face the winner of Turkey Valley and Kee High Wednesday, July 5, at a time and location to be determined.

The Wildcats would finally score their first runs of the game at the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two. However, this was only after Turkey Valley made the score 11-0 at the top of the inning.
In the fifth inning, the Trojans scored two runs on offense, and prevented Riceville from scoring on defense. Since Turkey Valley had at least a 10 run lead at the end of the fifth inning, the game was ended, with the Trojans earning a 13-2 victory in just five innings. The win gave the Trojans their first winning season in five years.
Junior pitcher Russell Nieman of Turkey Valley earned the victory after pitching a complete game, while giving up just two runs in the process. Senior
With the regular season complete, the Trojans turned their attention to the postseason, playing Kee in round one of district action in Calmar Saturday. A win would put them in the district semifinal Wednesday, July 5, at a location and time to be determined.

Decorah secures at least a share of NEIC title
The Decorah softball team (15-14, 10-3 NEIC) is looking to gain momentum before the postseason begins, getting a pair of conference wins over Crestwood Thursday. The series win sealed the deal for the Vikes to at least share the Northeast Iowa Conference title with second place Charles City, a team Decorah played Monday.
Falling short
Wednesday, the Vikings traveled to Dike-New Hartford (227), falling 4-1.
A solo home run in the first gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. D-NH broke away with three more in the third, denying Decorah a run until the seventh.
Decorah scattered five hits.
Lauren Luzum had two of them, along with Lillian Olson, Paige Werner and Sydney Kipp with one apiece. Clara Hjelle threw all six innings, taking the loss with five strikeouts.
Double wins Playing at Crestwood (13-16, 5-9 NEIC) Thursday, the Vikes picked up wins.
Decorah came out with the bats swinging in game one with lead-off batter Bryar Duwe coming up with a single and stealing third. Lani Hubkas then singled to score Duwe and set up a sac fly by Autumn Schaller to drive in the Vikes’ second run of the game. Crestwood got one back in the bottom of the first and another in the second to tie the game 2-2. It took until the fifth for either team to score again. This time it was Lauren Luzum driving in two runs on a double after Hubka and a sac fly to centerfield. In all, Decorah scored three times. The Cadets pushed one across home plate in the fifth as well; however, a Sydney Kipp double in the sixth scored the final runs for Decorah, giving the Vikes a 7-3 advantage. Crestwood managed to score one more time in the seventh, but that would be it for the Cadets.
One inning was all the Vikes needed to secure the game two victory, as Decorah scored five times in the first frame. Crestwood managed to score one in the first, one in the second and one in the third and came up
short, 5-3. Clara Hjelle got the double win with Kipp starting game two.
Throughout the night, Decorah tallied 13 hits. Luzum and Kipp each had three hits, including a double and drove in three runs to lead the offensive charge.
This week
Decorah hosted Charles City in the final NEIC series Monday and will face the Comets again in first-round regional action at home Thursday, July 6, at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the semifinal against Western Dubuque in Farley Saturday, July 8, at 7 p.m.
Linn-Mar stops Vikes, 9-2
Four errors came back to haunt the Decorah baseball team (16-14, 11-9 NEIC) at home, falling to Linn-Mar (2014) with the Vikes falling to the Lions, 9-2, Wednesday. Linn-Mar took advantage of two errors and a hit batter, combined with two singles and a double to score five times in the third inning. A Lion double and another Viking error gave the visitors yet another run in the fourth. Linn-Mar finished its scoring with three runs in the fifth, all while holding Decorah to just four baserunners through six frames.
In the bottom of the seventh, Decorah finally gained some momentum with Ethan Holthaus leading the charge on a double. Casey Brickley followed it up with a single and the Vikes loaded the bases when Fisher Tweten drew a walk. A sac fly by Ben Wymer gave Decorah one run with Mason Avila batting in the Vikes’ only other run of the game.
Decorah collected six hits in the contest. Brickley and Holthaus each had two, with a double apiece. Cade Olson rapped out a pair of singles as well.
Playoffs Friday
The Vikes have to prep for their final regular game of the season against Waterloo West Wednesday, July 5, before turning their focus on the road to state. Decorah will battle the WaHawks at home Wednesday, July 5, at 7 p.m.
The Class 3A postseason brackets were released last week with Decorah set to host Independence Friday, July 7, at 7 p.m. A win moves the Vikes into the semifinal against the winner of the Western Dubuque and Maquoketa matchup Monday, July 10, at a time and location to be determined. Other teams in the Substate 3 bracket are West Delaware, Mount Vernon, Waverly-Shell Rock and Charles City.
National Granny Basketball Tourney July 14- 16
The LC Decorah Troll Trotters Granny Basketball Team and Luther College are inviting the Decorah Community to join in welcoming participants in the first ever in-Iowa, National Granny Basketball Tournament. Twenty Granny basketball teams from the states of AZ, CA, IA, KS, LA, MO, TX, and WI will be converging on Decorah Friday-Sunday, July 14-16, to either compete for the National Title in the championship division or enjoy more leisurely competition in the new ‘Off Our Rockers’ division.
The weekend opens with a Community Picnic Friday evening, July 14, to welcome the Grannies at Bentdahl Commons in the heart of the Luther College Campus, serving from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The picnic, artfully provided by Luther Dining Services, features locally produced cuisine and dining services specialties from an extended salad bar, sandwich bar, and decadent selections from the dessert bar. There will also be a cashless bar serving local brews and wines.
A short program at 7 p.m. will conclude with Decorah’s own Nordic Dancers leading/teaching a Grand Granny Schottische. Community Tickets (Wrist Bands) may be purchased at the Luther College Box Office, which includes the Community Picnic and entry into all tournament games on Saturday and Sunday.
Never heard of Granny Basketball? Did you enjoy watching (or playing) 6:6 girls basketball many years ago? If so,
The LC Decorah Troll Trotters are looking forward to hosting the National Granny Basketball Tournament Friday-Sunday, July 14-16. Granny Basketball is for you. It was founded in 2005 by Barb Trammell from nearby Lansing as “a gentle game for women of a certain age.” Players must be at least 50 years old. Most of the Decorah team are in their late 60s and early to late 70s. Grannies have been known to still be playing into their late 80s and early 90s. Rules are from the 1923 game using three courts with two forwards, two centers and two guards. There is no jumping or running, although “hurrying” is allowed!
Unique to the game are the uniforms – black bloomers, middy collars and bright colorful socks that distinguish the teams. Also unique is the three-point underhanded “Granny Shot!”
Along with tournament “Pool Play” on Saturday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., attendees can test their shooting accuracy at the Granny Shot/Free Throw Contest Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the SRC at Luther College Regent’s Center. For the little ones under age 10 will be an “any shot” contest. Be sure and watch Sunday afternoon for the final game for the championship to see a most exciting, high-quality game. Donations raised from this tournament will be forwarded to Raptor Resource Project known for their Decorah Eagle Cam.

The raised-panel doors, railings and wall paneling are also made of matching alder, as are the dining room tables and chairs.
