The Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church, small but still quite active
By Charlie Warner
A century ago, the landscape of rural America was dotted with small churches of numerous denominations. There was nearly a church on every corner in the neighboring small towns back in the day.
But as the little 80-acre farms were swallowed up, the 10-children families became a thing of the past and scores of folks living in the small towns moved to the cities for better jobs, the number of houses of worship dwindled as well.
During the 1970s and 80s, many of the remaining small churches joined forces and shared a pastor in an effort to share the cost of hiring a fulltime minister. Yoked parishes soon became the norm in rural areas. Some ministers were shared between two and even three congregations.
The yoked parishes worked for a while, but as more and more of the old faithful church
goers
rolls declined and churches closed their doors. The pandemic of 2020 didn’t
help matters either. When they were unable to attend church services in person, some of the Sunday regulars got out of the
habit of going to church. When attendance restrictions were lifted, many had found other things to do on Sunday mornings.
There are very few small rural churches that are not sharing the cost of employing a pastor by themselves. One such church is the Presbyterian Church in Canton.
While the name, “Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church,” sounds like another yoked parish, The Presbyterian Church in Canton merged with Scotland Presbyterian (a small parish five miles north of Harmony) nearly 50 years ago. Although membership has dwindled to about 60 members, Canton-Scotland has continued to be an active part of the community.
The original wood-framed structure was completed in 1885. In 1928, a basement, complete with a kitchen, a restroom and dining area was added. In 1958, the inspiring stained-glass windows depicting the life of Christ were installed. An expansion project in the early 1990s included additional sanctuary seating and a pastor’s office on the main floor, a new entry way and elevator, and the dining area was expanded, men’s and women’s restrooms and two Sunday school classrooms were also added all in the lower level.
While it has been a challenge for the church to continue filling the pulpit, the Canton church is blessed to have Rev. Kate Rupert as its pastor. Pastor Kate serves the church on a part-time basis and provides for its members in a very positive way.
When asked about their pastor and why they enjoy attending Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church, here is what some of the members had to say:
“Pastor Kate relates the Bible to our every day lives. She gives us a positive and meaningful message to start the week. She also challenges us and gives us something to think about,” said Kirsten Wyffels.
“Pastor Kate’s sermons are informative, up lifting, thought provoking, reassuring, easy to understand and provide a positive message,” observed Jane Hall.
“I like the Presbyterian ser-
vice because it is easy to follow. We have friendly people. Pastor Kate provides us with great sermons and she brings the scripture into everyday life,” noted Bette Masters.
“Our church is an easy place to belong, it adds a spiritual dimension to our lives. It reminds me that our faith depends upon divine Grace, ‘unmerited favor,’” said LeRoy Haynes. “Rev. Rupert’s sermons are theologically faithful, and so interesting when she incorporates personal experiences, modern illustrations and literary examples. It is clear that she seriously plans and prepares what she has to say in her sermons,” Haynes added.
Several years ago when the pandemic restricted indoor gatherings, Canton-Scotland had Sunday morning worship on the lawn. Initially, the outdoor services were musical events where members of the church performed the old time church favorites. As interest in the outdoor services grew, short sermons and sing-alongs were added. The Canton church still holds at least one outdoor service each summer. This year it is scheduled for Sunday, June 25, at 10 a.m.
Another event the Canton church holds (twice) each summer is Sunday morning service at the rustic Scotland Church located in the rolling hills north of Harmony. The services this year will be July 23 and Aug. 27.
“Canton-Scotland is a welcoming church that offers grace, love and support for anyone who is looking for a church,” said Rev. Rupert. “There’s no need to be anyone other than who you are at this church. I would hope that anyone would feel like they could come to church and not worry if they weren’t sure what to wear or say or do.”
The Canton-Presbyterian Church is located at 104 Fillmore Ave. Sunday morning services begin at 10 a.m. For more information, contact Church Secretary Linda Turner at galrturner@gmail.com.

Nat’l High School Bass
Tourney is this week
By Capn. Ted Peck
The 14th Annual High School Bass Fishing World Finals and Championship kicks off June 21 out of Copeland Park in LaCrosse. Over 440 to student teams from all over the United States will be chasing $3.3 million in scholarships and prizes.
Mississippi River pools 7, 8 and 9 are open to competitors with finals of the event on June 24. Both largemouth and smallmouth bass are fair game with a three bass daily bag allowed and 14-inch minimum size requirement.
Working as a fishing guide on the Upper Mississippi for almost 50 years I am diametrically opposed to fishing tourneys that remove quality fish from their habitat to be transported many miles to another river pool to be released and hopefully survive. But after serious torment over situational ethics, I agreed to guide teams from Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arizona prior to cutoff of outside information or assistance at sundown on June 11.
This concession was made for two reasons: help the next generation internalize respect for the environment and other anglers—and teach them how to stay safe in a brutally apathetic, dangerous environment.
River fishing on a bona fide force of nature like the Mississippi was a foreign concept to all three teams of future BASS pros I guided.
The first lesson deals with fishing philosophy. If you focus on fishers in 439 other teams, it’s game over before you even launch an $80,000 bass boat. Every boat in high school competition has an adult captain to drive the boat between fishing spots chosen by participants.
Success on the River—and fishing in general—is adopting a philosophy that you are fishing against the fish, not other fishers. The balance point of this quest is the River itself. Work with the River instead of fighting it and odds tip in your favor.
A classic example of this philosophy is casting the shoreline along a shady rip-rapped area on the River mainstem. Working this structure by using the
Oklahoma bass fishers Cooper Lewis and Wyatt Wisian hone their bass fishing skills on backwaters of Pool 9. (submitted)
electric trolling motor while heading upstream means the troller has to pull the boat at higher speeds. Making directional adjustments under power is challenging. Fishing a shady bank with the boat’s bow pointed downstream allows lower trolling motor speeds. But with the current pushing you the boat is moving too fast to work fish holding spots effectively.
Learning how to work down a shady shoreline backwards is a foreign concept to bass fishers. Once my young clients learned how to do this their presentation and catch rate increased significantly. Fish in a river system always face into the current. Sliding downstream backwards enables the angler in the bow of the boat to make an optimum presentation with a search bait like the Rat-L-Trap. The angler fishing in the back of the boat can cast perpendicular to the shoreline with a finesse lure like a senko or Ned rig, with the option of throwing a search bait like a Bill Lewis lures MR-6 directly downstream, retrieving his cast slowly back upstream to the boat.
The MR-6 floats at rest and dives when retrieved. A productive retrieve which “tics” the rocks when being pulled back upstream will result in snagging up if you’re doing it right. But allowing the reel to free spool, carrying the slack line downstream with fishing rod held high causes a large “J” in the line, often freeing the lure from the snag. More often than not, a fish is waiting when the lure backs out of the rocks and starts floating towards the surface.
If you caught that reference of fishing the shady side of the River the learning curve is shortened. Towering bluffs along the Mississippi create shade along the east shoreline in the morning until about 10:30 a.m. in some spots. Likewise, shade which puts bass in a more active feeding mood begins draping western shores about 4 p.m.
Essentially all bass fishing is done beyond the red and green
channel markers that designate navigable water. The mnemonic “red, right, return” when heading inland from the sea or navigating upstream provides orientation when easing out of a backwater toward the channel.
Navigating toward the channel should always be done at a 90-degree angle to the shoreline. A vector of 45 degrees may lead to unwelcome contact with rocky structures called wingdams or closing dams. Boat captains from other states unfamiliar with river fishing learned to always give the downstream side of islands a wide berth to avoid siltation and sandbars.
Bass location in many productive summer spots on the Mississippi is often one foot deeper than a rod tip poked in the water as it disappears from view.
There are hundreds of islands in the Mississippi River flood plain. Water can be mere inches deep across acres of faceless water which lies between these barriers. A key to finding deeper, navigable water is looking for islands with tall green trees. The flood of 2019 killed up to 60 percent of mature trees on some areas of pool 9. Islands with living trees usually mean less siltation and deeper water close to shore.
An old River guide’s greatest satisfaction comes from seeing a novice angler catch a “personal best” fish using a lure they have never used before.
Weigh in for the 14th annual high school World Bass Fishing National Championship will be 4 p.m. this Friday at Copeland Park, on Clinton street in LaCrosse, Wis.

Judgement against Jones in civil case
Marsha Angell won the final judgement in Chickasaw County Court in the June 7 non-jury trial in the civil case against Tin, Rust and Harmony store owner Mindy Jones for non-payment of Angell’s merchandise Jones sold in her Harmony, Minn. store in 2021. Jones, of Waterloo, did not appear at trial, and was found in default.
Angell sold Jones products to resell in her Harmony store, and Jones gave payment checks to Angell that were returned by the bank due to non-sufficient funds. The NSF checks totaled $33,437.29. In addition, Jones failed to pay Angell for $5,076.53 of inventory.
In judgment against Tin, Rust and Harmony, LLC, Judge Richard Stochl awarded Angell not only the amount owed from NSF checks, but interest on those amounts totaling approximately $1,500, and the unpaid commission for items to the tune of just under $800.
In a judgement against Jones, the judge ordered Jones to pay the $10,000 for the loan still owed, with interest accumulated to an additional $1,500 and all of Angell’s attorney fees.
The total judgement for Angell was $37,494.20 from Tin, Rust and Harmony, and $55,750.32 from Mindy Jones. Jones is facing 14 felony
charges in this same incident at trial in Fillmore County, Minn., scheduled for Tuesday, June 20, at 9 a.m.
Jones’ pretrial conference for the Allamakee County charges for Arson in the First Degree and Animal Mistreatment in the matter of Jones’ Tin, Rust and Harmony store in Waukon destroyed by fire in February 2022 has been set for Sept. 11 with a jury trial scheduled to begin at Oct. 4. Her Fillmore County trial for 33 counts of felony theft and forgery charges totaling over $37,000 for allegedly depositing a friend’s checks to Jones’ accounts without his knowledge is set for Oct. 9.
Not guilty plea entered in 2022 infant death

Asparagus . . . part three
By Jessica Woodward
driftlessthe Foodie
By now, your patches should have gone to seed in preparation for next year’s harvest. It is safe to say that our stalks are officially taller than I am. But while it’s still abundant, I like to share my harvest with friends, coworkers, and family alike. And, I must say, having our own patch that’s about 20 feet long by 7 feet wide, I’m about asparagus-ed out at this point. However, for all of you who don’t have such a large patch, don’t fear! Asparagus is still bountiful at the market and at
our local grocery stores.
And the final recipe of this three-part asparagus madness will incorporate various other produce items that you can find alongside that beloved asparagus at the farm stands. This is my favorite time of year, as local produce becomes more constant and more recipes include all things fresh and yummy.
One of my favorite things to pair with asparagus is mushrooms. And this third recipe will
not disappoint. It is not heavy, there’s no cream or a bunch of cheese — it’s great for hot evenings. In fact, it’s the perfect recipe to make if you have a flat-top grille outside. No need to stand inside over the stove.
Think of it as a twist on fried rice!
Well, now that part three is done, it’s on to the next adventure as we added a flock of chickens to our home!
Almond Asparagus Rice Dish
Ingredients
2 small leeks, white and green parts only, cut into halfmoons
2 cups of asparagus, cut on the bias in 1-inch pieces
1 pint of mushrooms, sliced
1/2 cup of sliced almonds
How to
2 cloves of garlic, shaved
2 cups of cooked rice
1 pound of ground sausage
Zest of one lemon
2 tablespoons of chives
2 tablespoons of butter
Salt and pepper
In a large skillet, brown the sausage, remove, drain and set aside.
Add 1 tablespoon of butter and the leeks to the skillet with a pinch of salt and caramelize for about five minutes.
Add mushrooms and brown 3-5 minutes.
Add asparagus and garlic, season with a pinch of salt and cook for 2-3 minutes.
Add the remaining butter, rice and cooked sausage back to the skillet. Stir and cook together for 3-5 minutes.
Taste and season with pepper and salt if needed.
Stir in the lemon zest and top with chives and almonds.

Trojans sweep Central at home
By Logan Manderfield and Becky Walz
The Turkey Valley softball team (7-12, 6-2 UIC) picked up a pair of conference wins Wednesday night over Central Elkader in Jackson Junction, then went 1-2 in games at the New Hampton tournament Saturday.
Clean sweep
Playing a UIC doubleheader at home Wednesday the Trojans swept Central Elkader (3-12, 2-6 UIC) in a pair of close contests, 12-11 and 6-5.
The first game started off with Central getting out to an early 3-1 lead. However, Turkey Valley’s freshman pitcher Maici Weber hit a game-tying threerun home run over the left field fence, bringing the score to 4-4. Over the next three innings, the two teams scored a combined 14 runs, along with two lead changes and a tie, bringing the score to 11 runs apiece. Turkey Valley ended up shutting out the Warriors at the top of the seventh inning, giving the Trojans a chance at ending the game with just a single run. At the bottom of the seventh inning, senior second baseman Alison Leibold made just enough contact with a pitch that senior third baseman Olivia Snyder was able to score the game winning run.
The second game started off with a bang for the Turkey Valley. At the end of the first three innings, the Trojans were up by a score of 5-1. The fifth run that the Trojans scored was a solo shot over the left field fence that was hit by senior centerfielder Clare Courtney. At the top of the sixth inning, Central scored three runs, bringing the Warriors within just one run of the Trojans. At the top of the seventh inning, the Warriors scored just one run, which tied the game, but it allowed the Trojans to get their second walk-off hit of the night by scoring just one run. Sure enough, that is exactly what happened. At the bottom of the seventh inning, Courtney hit a ball between the gap between the shortstop and the third baseman, resulting in the
game winning run, which was scored by freshman M. Weber.
Halle Weber was the winning pitcher in both contests.

New Hampton tourney
Back on the diamond Saturday at the New Hampton tournament, the Trojans faced Denver (7-15), New Hampton (9-6) and Nashua-Plainfield (2-19) and came away with one win.
Turkey Valley fell just short in game one against Denver, 6-5, as both teams tagged the ball for nine hits. For the Trojans Courtney produced a double and drove in a run, while Leibold manufactured two singles and two RBI. M. Weber also had two hits and one RBI.
Game two was another close one as the Trojans fell to New Hampton, 5-3. This time TV had four hits with M. Weber accounting for two of them. Courtney and Kinsey Reicks also had one apiece with Reicks driving in a run.
The Trojan bats were hard at work in the third game against Nashua-Plainfield as TV defeated the Huskies, 14-4, in five frames. TV tallied 10 hits in the contest including doubles by M. Weber, Brianna Busta and Abigail Schmitt. M. Weber also garnered a single and three RBI.
Third win over NFV for TV baseball
By Logan Manderfield
Having won the first two meetings of the season over North Fayette Valley (3-16, 3-7 UIC), the Turkey Valley baseball team (9-10, 7-5 UIC) was looking for the three-game sweep Thursday, June 15, at home — and got it, 5-1.
The game started with NFV getting out to an early 1-0 lead at the top of the first inning. At the bottom of the third inning, Turkey Valley tied the game with a sacrifice fly by senior right fielder Chase Hayek. The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Trojans scored four runs. Neither team would score for the rest of the game, leaving TV with the 5-1 victory.
SW handcuffed by Beckman
Class 2A No. 4 Dyersville Beckman (14-7) was able to strike early and often offensively to cruise to a 14-4 victory over the South Winn baseball team (14-5, 11-0 UIC).
The Warriors put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game but Beckman was able to respond with another big inning in the sixth to put the game away.
“We knew we would face a top notch opponent this evening and their starting pitcher coming off of an injury was really tough on us in his first start in the year. Our guys look forward to these big matchups, and unfortunately this was not our night,” said Coach Alex Smith.
South Winn had five hits in the contest — a double by Carson Streeter and singles by Carson Wenthold, Jamie Kuennen, Kole Hageman and Brody Tieskoetter.
On the hill, Braiden Todd took the loss with Hageman and Tieskoetter throwing in relief.
The Warriors will be at North Fayette Valley Tuesday, June 20, at 4 p.m. South Winn will be at Postville Thursday, June 22, at 7 p.m., then travel to Sumner-Fredericksburg Friday, June 23, for a 5 p.m. varsity game. The Warriors will conclude the week at home Saturday, June 24, in a four-team tournament with Osage, Kee and Williamsburg starting at 9:30 a.m.
Games this week
Monday the Trojans were at West Central and host St. Ansgar Tuesday, June 20, at 7 p.m.
The week continues with a varsity twinbill at home against North Fayette Valley Wednesday, June 21, at 5 p.m., then the TV is at Crestwood Thursday, June 22, which starts with a ninth-grade game at 4 p.m. The Trojans will finish the week at the Decorah tournament Saturday, June 24, at 9 a.m.
After freshman pitcher Logan Busta gave up just one run over the course of the first five innings, junior pitcher Oliver
Schmitt came in to finish the game. In the batter’s box, the Trojans garnered seven hits. Carson Busta and Aidan Holthaus each contributed a double, while Garrett Dietzenbach went 2-for-3 at the plate. Calvin Bodensteiner, Schmitt and Caleb Kurtenbach also had a hit for TV.
The Trojans were in action against MFL MarMac Monday and will head to Garnavillo to face Clayton Ridge-Central Tuesday, June 20, at 4 p.m., followed by a junior varsity contest.

Warrior offense comes to play in wins
The South Winn softball team (11-10, 7-1 UIC) picked up two conference victories to finish the week over MFL MarMac on the road before falling to Class 2A No. 14 Osage at home.
A good day
It was a slug-fest Wednesday as the Warriors swept MFL MarMac (5-14. 5-5 UIC) in Monona, 7-0 and 18-6.
The UIC teams went scoreless in the first three frames of game one before South Winn scratched one run across the plate in the fourth and another in the fifth. A five-run seventh inning gave the Warriors a cushion and the 7-0 win.
In game one, the Warriors had 11 hits with Ali Heying going 2-for-4 with a triple and a double. Three others accounted for doubles including two by Morgan Kriener. Providing a double apiece were Abby Wagner and Morgan Kleve.
The bats really heated up in
game two with SW plating a run in the second, three in the third and six in the fourth before allowing the Bulldogs to score their first run of the night in the bottom of the fifth. The Warriors got another in the sixth and put the game out of MFL MarMac’s reach with seven runs in the final stanza to win 18-6.
Morgan Kleve went nearly 19 innings since giving up the last unearned run. The SW senior got the double win with 13 innings of work, giving up 10 total hits and striking out 10.
The nightcap saw South Winn produce 22 hits. Once again Heying was hot at the plate, going 5-for-5 with a triple, two doubles and six RBI.
Wagner also had two doubles.
“I’m very happy with our pitching, defense and our hitting just keeps getting better,” said Coach Ken Buchheit.
Strong base running, pitching and defense gave the Decorah softball team (10-7, 6-1 NEIC) its sixth league win of the season Friday night. The Vikes bested New Hampton (8-6, 4-5 NEIC) at home, 6-5 in eight frames.
The Chickasaws struck first with a run in the opening frame and took a 2-0 lead on a solo homer by Elaina Rosonke in the third. Decorah then responded with three of its own in the bottom half of the third frame, taking advantage of walks issued to Jasera Tweten and Bryar Duwe. An error and a pass ball allowed them both to score. The third run was scored by Lani Hubka after she reached base on an error and scampered to third on the error. Lillian Olson drove Hubka in on a grounder.
The Vikes extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth with Hubka and Olson both crossing the plate. A second solo home run by New Hampton gave the Chickasaws hope in the sixth and the visitors tied the game in the top of the seventh.
With the game knotted 5-5, the Vikes went down in order in the bottom of the seventh and were forced into an extra inning. In the eighth, New Hampton threatened with the lead-off batters standing on second and third before Decorah pitcher Clara Hjelle retired the next three with strikeouts.
The Viking freshman pitcher then led off the bottom of the eighth, reaching base on a walk and advancing to second on a wild pitch. A sac bunt by Dylin Thompson moved Hjelle to third. Decorah loaded the bases with walks to Sydney Kipp and Paige Werner. A third walk to Duwe walked Hjelle in for the winning Viking run.
Hjelle was a rock on the mound. She went all eight frames, striking out 12 while scattering eight hits. Decorah got seven hits in the contest. Autumn Schaller was 2-for-4 with a double. Providing the other hits for the Vikes were Duwe, Hubka, Olson, Lauren Luzum and Thompson.

Local teams battle each other, Ottumwa
In what has become an annual tradition, the Decorah, South Winn and Ottumwa baseball teams have battled it out on the diamond. Saturday the trio of squads competed at Luther College with Ottumwa (19-6) sweeping the local teams and the Vikes (13-7) besting the Warriors (14-5).
Decorah and Bulldogs
The Vikes and Ottumwa opened the day’s activities with the Bulldogs dominating the offensive attack, handing Decorah a 9-1 loss.
Ottumwa plated its first two runs in the second to open the game. Decorah’s lone run came in the top of the third following a Casey Brickley single that landed him on second due to a Bulldog throwing error, allowing him to score later in the frame. From there it was all Ottumwa who scored four times in the fourth, once in the fifth and twice in the sixth.
Splitting time on the mound were Fisher Tweten and Landon Kuennen. At the plate, Decorah tallied just three hits by Kaden Alstad, Brickley and Ben Wymer.
“In spite of the result of a loss in this game, we were pleased with many of our at bats against one of the best pitchers we will face all year long. Ottumwa is a very solid team that kept pressure on us to make plays throughout the game,” said Decorah coach Adam Riley.

SW takes on Ottumwa
In game two, Ottumwa jumped out to an early lead before the South Winn was able to cut it to a 10-8 deficit in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs would go on to outscore the Warriors 11-1 over the final three innings to secure the 21-9 victory.
“This game got out of hand on our part with free bases and when you compound that by facing a good hitting team, we
gave up way too many big innings to be competitive,” said SW Coach Alex Smith.
The Warriors had five pitchers make appearances including Carson Streeter, Parker Timp, Kaden Bullerman, Cody Meyer and Dylan Taylor.
South Winn pounded out nine hits with Jamie Kuennen going 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a stolen base. Carson Wenthold and C. Streeter each knocked out two singles as well with Keagen Streeter and Braiden Todd each contributing one.

Vikes vs. Warriors
Wrapping up the day was the neighborhood battle between Decorah and South Winn with the Vikes coming out on top 5-2.
“We are extremely happy for the kids to get a hard fought and well-earned win in this game. The execution offensively in the later stages of this game combined with solid pitching performances from Brady
Bohner and Ethan Holthaus really put us in a position to earn this win,” noted Viking Coach Riley.
South Winn jumped out to an early two-run lead after one inning, having taken advantage of walks issued to brothers Carson and Keagen Streeter. From there the Warriors couldn’t get much going against the Viking pitching having just two hits in the contest.
Decorah was able to tie it in the bottom of the fourth on several Warrior errors, allowing Kaden Alstad and Cade Olson to score. The Vikes took the go ahead runs in the fifth inning with three big runs plated by Brayden Hartl, Alstad and Olson.
“We just had an off game at the plate and if that happens, you really have to be clean on the defensive side of things and we didn’t have that in us in this game,” said SW Coach Smith.
“It was great to play at the Luther College field. Thanks to all that were involved in making that happen for our guys to experience a college facility.”
The Vikes had five hits in the contest. With one apiece were Brayden Hartl, Caleb Meyer, Olson, Fisher Tweten and Ben Wymer with Casey Brickley driving in two runs.
Carson Wenthold had a double for the Warriors with Kaden Bullerman coming up with a hit as well.
Viking baseball moves to 9-4 in NEIC
Going on the road in conference action Friday, the Decorah baseball team (13-7, 9-4 NEIC) shutout Crestwood (4-14, 3-10 NEIC) in five innings, 10-0.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Vikes got rid of the jitters and went to work, scoring six runs after sending 12 batters to the plate. Decorah put up three more in the fourth and closed the game out with one in the fifth.
“Game one was a wellplayed and executed game both offensively and defensively. Kaden Alstad was outstanding on the mound not allowing a hit through his five innings of work,” said Coach Adam Riley.
Alstad was on the mound ringing up nine batters in the shutout.
The Vikes had 11 hits in the game. Mason Avila was 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBI, while Brayden Hartl was 3-for-4, drove in a pair of runs and stole two bases. Casey Brickley also had a double as he went 2-for3. Ethan Holthaus, Cade Olson and Ben Wymer had the other hits.
The outcome of game two was unavailable at press time due to a technical error.
Decorah will be at Waverly-Shell Rock Tuesday, June
20, for a varsity doubleheader at 5 p.m., then travels to Independence Wednesday, June 21, at 7 p.m. The Vikes will finally return to their Olejniczak
field Thursday, June 22, against Clear Lake at 7 p.m.
Decorah is hosting a Waukon Friday, June 23, at 5 p.m., with a tribute to North Winn baseball. The Vikes will be wearing replica North Winn uniforms.

People of all ages need TETANUS VACCINES
Are you up-to-date?
Tetanus is an infection caused by a bacteria. When the bacteria enter the body, they produce a toxin causing painful muscle contractions. Another name for tetanus is “lockjaw” because tetanus often causes a person’s neck and jaw muscles to lock, making it hard to open the mouth or swallow.
■ A tetanus shot is needed every 10 years, although if you have a severe injury, you may need one more frequently.
■ Females receive a Tdap (tetanus shot with pertussis) with each pregnancy to pass on antibodies and protect the infant.
■ After age 18, adults need one Tdap and can be followed up with a regular tetanus shot per the immunization schedule.
■ Flooding does not cause tetanus and technically there is no need for a tetanus shot unless there has been an injury.

Curmudgeonly Carl’s worst nightmare comes true when he discovers a little boy named Russell is a stowaway aboard the balloon-powered house. The movie, “Up”, begins at 8 p.m.
The second live performance on Wednesday, June 28, features Carter Guse, a Cedar Falls
native heading to college in the fall. Carter, 17, is a singer/songwriter/entertainer who plays a Taylor acoustic guitar as well as a Les Paul Custom electric guitar, drums and piano (not to mention tambourine with his foot) in genres ranging from the 50s through today.
Guse wrote a song that was featured in Nashville for his performance at the historic
Bluebird Café. He was a finalist in the adult division of the Bill Riley Talent Festival at the Iowa State Fair at the early age of 14. Guse performed an original song on 93.5 The Mix Radio and appeared in an Iowa Strong feature on KWWL-TV. He recently performed at a benefit featuring his rendition of the Garth Brooks song, “The Dance,” for television person-
ality Jay Leno. Boyd’s Food Truck will be available during Guse’s performance. The second Movie Night on Wednesday, July 5, features “Brave.” In the movie, Merida, the impetuous but courageous daughter of Scottish King Fergus and Queen Elinor, is a skilled archer who wants to carve out her own path in life. Her defiance of an age-old tra-
dition angers the Highland lords and leads to chaos in the kingdom. Merida seeks help from an eccentric witch, who grants her an ill-fated wish. Now, Merida must discover the true meaning of courage and undo a beastly curse before it’s too late. The movie, “Brave” begins at 8 p.m. An ice cream truck will be available during the movie.
