Funding
Work is expected to be completed by this fall, Lienau reported. All, that is, except the funding. While the original project was estimated at $20,000 and organizers have raised just over that amount, the new project’s total cost is estimated at $45,000. “Local Veterans have contributed significantly to the project, and Rodney Nicholson’s daughter, Sandy, contributed a generous gift towards her dad’s plaque. We’re going to invite her down for the dedication ceremony,” Lienau added. “When this is done, it will be so beautiful for the city and to honor all our Veterans in Ossian.”
The Depot Outlet, AcenTek Foundation and Casey’s General Store have also awarded grants toward the project.
For more information on memorial plans, contact Alvin Hageman at 563-379-1928 or Sue Lienau at 563-379-7739. Donations toward the project can be sent to: Ossian City Clerk, C/O Veterans Memorial Fund, PO Box 295, Ossian, IA 52161.

With the help of the Decorah community (businesses and individuals), students raised over $6,790. Water to Thrive will use the first $5,000 to build a well in either Ethiopia, Uganda or Tanzania and the remaining money will roll over into next year’s fundraiser. (submitted photo)

PERSONALS ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mission in mind; Warriors aiming to stay at top of their game
The mission remains the same – keep the Warriors in headlines and compete at state. The South Winn baseball program will look for another successful campaign in the 2023 season after qualifying for the state tournament for the third time in four years in 2022.
With six returning letter winners, including an all-state pitcher, the Warriors have the cast to make a run to the tournament once again.
Head Coach Alex Smith has compiled a 284-130 record at the helm and is leading the Warriors for his 13th season. In the dug as assistants will be Justin Izer, Nathan Moonen and Carter Wenthold.
A recap
With a host of seniors last year, the Warriors were the hot team all season. They went through the league with a 15-3 record, taking second in the Upper Iowa Conference behind only Kee High, and ended the season 23-9 overall.
Last year the Warriors pulled off an amazing postseason run, qualifying for the state tournament for the third time in the past four years, highlighted by a 2-0 substate win over Kee High. The season ended in heartbreak in the state quarterfinals to Remsen St. Mary’s, 6-0.
The Warriors graduated eight seniors, including five all-conference players — Jordan Buchheit, Logan Hageman, Nick Holien, Tony Greve and Dayten Ondrashek, along with Evan Bushman, Sam Conway and Lane Quandahl.
“This is going to be a hard group to replace with both their level of play on the field along with their leadership qualities and passion for playing the game,” said Coach Smith.
A new line-up
The Warriors will turn to a nucleus of players that have seen varsity time that includes five seniors to keep the successful run going in the program.
Success starts on the mound, and South Winn will return an

all-state selection in Keagen Streeter (.229 batting average).
Streeter was dominant in the postseason run and is one of just a few players in the state returning with over a 100+ strikeouts last season. The Warriors will need his experience to lead a group of younger arms that look to take on big roles this season.
Lead candidates to take on significant innings include Jamie Kuennen (.259 average), Parker Timp, Cody Meyer, Carson Streeter (.224 average) and Braiden Todd. In total, fans could see 10-12 guys getting varsity innings this season with the busy schedule the Warriors have put together.
“We will need every guy to take their pitching to another level this year to be competitive in our schedule that includes a number of potential state tournament teams,” said Coach Alex Smith. “Offensively, the lineup will have a much different look with just three every days offensive players returning. I think we have a number of guys that will be ready to jump into the lineup and provide quality at bats. We may not have a top of the lineup with significant experience, but we should be really balanced from top to bottom with lots of guys having the capability to put up a big day.”
Lead candidates for the outfield include seniors Kaden Bullerman, Carson Wenthold, Dylan
Taylor, along with junior Brody Tieskoetter, and sophomores Nolan Sabelka and Lukas Weiss. Third baseman Jamie Kuennen and shortstop Carson Streeter provide a lot of experience on the left side of the infield. Cody Meyer, Braiden Todd and Carver Wenthold will also be in the mix in the infield along with Keagen Streeter, Parker Timp and Jordan Baumler, who are looking to anchor down first base. Kole Hageman returns in the catching posi-
mound with several guys in the mix. We may be more inexperienced than our returning roster from last year, but we have a lot of guys that have been waiting their time on the JV level that will be ready for the next step up on the varsity,” said Coach Smith.
The veteran skipper also looks for several other teams in the league to be improved from last year. Although both Kee High and South Winn graduated a sig-

One for the record books; Branum champion, duo second
Junior Caden Branum etched his name in the record books last week as the first Decorah tennis player to be crowned an individual champion, while Daniel Skrade and Landon Baker was the first doubles team since 1999 to reach the finals. It was only the second time the Vikes had both singles and doubles in the finals at state, the only other time was in 1995.
The 16 district winners and runners-up in singles and doubles came together for the Class 1A state boys individual and doubles tournament Tuesday and Wednesday, May 2324, at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.
(5).
In the finals, Branum ran up against another freshman, Charlie LeGrand, from Xavier who defeated last year’s third-place finisher from North Polk. Both players had some nerves to start but both settled down and some high quality tennis ensued. At 3-4 down in the first set though, Coach Anderson and Branum talked on a break to slow down, hit big targets and play high energy point to point, and the Decorah netter went on to win nine of the next 10 games, and secure Decorah’s first ever singles championship, 6-4 and 6-1.

tion having done an outstanding job in his sophomore year and Braiden Todd should provide a great option as a second catcher.
Season outlook
“We are excited for the upcoming season and look forward to a jampacked schedule between conference games and some top teams from around the area. Early in the year, we will be searching for our depth on the
nificant number of players, he anticipates both will be right in the mix again for the conference race.
“Our non-conference schedule is loaded with high quality teams so we will be well tested as we approach the postseason. I know our guys have the drive and focus to make another run at it in July and look forward to that opportunity,” concluded Coach Smith.
Pride on the diamond; Warriors aiming high in 2023
““I’m just thrilled to see all of the hard work pay off for all these boys, I think it will take a few days for it to sink in fully. It was great to see all of the support from fans young to old cheering on Decorah for an incredible two days. Thank to you to all,” said Coach Matt Anderson.
Champion Branum
In singles play, Caden Branum, the returning runner-up and top seed, had a tough draw in the first round against a threetime state participant, Andrew Lawrence of Shenandoah. After working through some nerves, Branum’s power took over for a nice first round win, 6-1 and 6-2. In the second round, Branum had to play Xavier’s No. 2 player, Ryan Schmit, which the Vikes knew would be tough because Xavier has won team state three years in a row. Branum started slow but eventually his kick serve setup became too much to overcome earning him a spot in the semifinals.
Coach Anderson expected Wednesday was going to be tough against a strong freshman, Easton Moon, from North Polk, that he knew little about. The Viking junior started fast, but in the second set, Moon settled in and battle ensued going to a tiebreaker where experience finally won out, 6-1, 7-6
Silver in doubles Decorah’s district runner-up team in doubles of Daniel Skrade and Landon Baker had tempered expectations coming into the tournament, but one wouldn’t know it from their results. On day one, they beat the third seeded and experienced team from Spencer (Owen Kierscht and Riley DeWitt), 6-3 and 6-3, before defeating a Glenwood team (Kayden Anderson and Tyler Harger) in a pair of 6-2 matches in the second round to earn a trip to the semifinals.
On Wednesday, the duo knew their opponents, Charlie Curtiss and Roan Martineau from Dubuque Wahlert well, having meet them numerous times the last few years, always coming up a bit short…but on this day, Skrade and Baker brought their best and earned a tough victory to make the finals, 6-2 and 6-4.
In the finals against Jack Briggs and Joshua Roozeboom of Pella, the Vikes played another good match, but eventually had to tip the hat, 1-6 and 0-6, to a team that was hot and had lots of prior experience.
“I couldn’t be prouder of how this team represented Decorah tennis the last two days and especially during the finals against tough opponents by fighting to the end,” said Coach Matt Anderson.

The season is set to be special for the South Winn softball team.
With veteran experience back at nearly every position, the Warriors have an eye on challenging for a conference title.
Leading the way Head Coach Ken Buchheit who is in his ninth year with the program, his third at the helm. He will be assisted by Taylor Lensing and Sierra Breitsprecher.
Solid year
The Warriors had 13 athletes
back who had playing experience a year ago, including a pair of veteran hurlers. That experienced paid off through the season, as they posted a 9-7 conference record.
Heading into the postseason, South Winn was stunned by a Clayton Ridge team with an 8-21 overall record in the Class 2A Region 8 quarterfinal, 7-6.
Graduating at the end of the season were second-team AllUIC honorees pitcher Erin Luzum (115-1/3 innings, 150 Ks)
and Janessa Zweibahmer (.389 batting average, 28 hits, 19 runs scored, 11 RBI), along with Liz Engelhardt (.215, 11 hits) and Ruthie Frana (.229 average).
Lots of starters
The Warriors return starters at nearly every position.
Leading the way are seniors Morgan Kleve, Ella Willey, Hailey Riehle, Morgan Kriener, Izzy Opperman and Ali Heying, along with sophomores Abby Wagner and Britney Hageman. Catcher Avery Humpal returns behind the plate as well after missing last season with a back injury.
Kleve pitched eight games for the Warriors producing 24 strikeouts with an earned run average (ERA) of 3.71. At the plate she had a .375 batting average with 30 hits and drove in 20 runs.
Three hits for SW softball
ished the season with a .384 average. She returns to right field for the Warriors.
Lead-off batter, Wagner, hit for .231 with 15 hits and 15 RBI. As a freshman she split her time between centerfield and the pitcher’s circle. On the mound, Wagner produced 18 strikeouts in her 21-1/3 innings.
“This year’s strength should be our battery (pitcher/catcher) of Kleve and Humpal, along with our outfield defense,” said Coach Buchheit. “We need to develop depth at pitching and improve our hitting throughout the order.”

Returning letter winners for the Lady Warriors include (l-r) Avery Humpal, Britney Hageman, Izzy Opperman, Hailey Riehle, Abby Wagner, Ella Willey, Morgan Kleve, Morgan Kriener and Ali Heying.
Outfielder, E. Willey produced 21 hits with 15 RBI and a .304 average, while Kriener posted an average of .243 with 17 hits. Heying had limited time on the field due to an injury last year, playing in 17 games with a .267 average.
Hageman garnered 28 hits during her freshman campaign last year with 13 RBI and fin-
Everyone in the conference will be chasing after Turkey Valley and Kee High. However, with the experience South Winn brings back, things look positive for a Warrior UIC crown.
“We have a 35-game schedule and play 19 non-conference games against good competition. We need to keep growing and improving as a team while working toward team goals,” said Coach Buchheit. “We have great senior leadership to push the team to our goals.”
It was a three-hit affair that didn’t go South Winn’s way Wednesday, as the Warriors (02) traveled to Saint Ansgar (12), falling 10-0, in five innings.
The Warriors managed just three singles in the game by Adrienne Winings, Morgan Kleve and Ella Willey.
After a first inning stalemate, the Saints put up two runs in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and finished the game early in the fifth with three more.
Kleve took the loss on the mound, giving up 10 hits and striking out two.
Friday, May 26, the Warriors host Crestwood after the printing of the Driftless Journal. The game recap will be published in the June 1 Public Opinion. This week South Winn will host Central Elkader Wednesday, May 31, for a conference doubleheader at 5 p.m., and Waukon for a JV/varsity twinbill Friday, June 1 at 5:30 p.m.

Warriors start the year 4-0
The South Winn baseball team (4-0, 2-0 UIC) is on roll early in the season. After winning its home opener last week Tuesday, the Warriors picked up two more victories Wednesday and Thursday.
On the road Wednesday
In a big early-season matchup, the Warriors squared off with Class 1A No. 9 Saint Ansgar (2-1) Wednesday.
While the Saints were able to strike first with a run in the bottom of the third, the lead was short lived with the Warriors responding with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth. Jamie Kuennen got the scoring started for the SW driving home Keagen Streeter on a triple to right field. Brody Tieskoetter came up with a big two-out hit to drive in the third run of the inning. That proved to be the only runs either team would score in the game as SW won, 3-1.
Keagen Streeter dominated on the mound, only getting stronger as the game went along. He retired the last 12 batters he faced tossing the complete game while striking out 10 batters and surrendering just one walk and a hit by pitch.
South Winn had seven hits in the contest with a triple by Jamie Kuennen. Rapping out two singles was Carson Streeter. With a hit apiece were Carson Wenthold, K. Streeter, Kole Hageman and Tieskoetter.
“We knew going in this would be a highly contested game for us and that each pitch would be critical. We surrendered an unearned run in the third, but I give our guys a lot of credit responding with the three runs in the fourth. Keagen was out-
Back at it Thursday
Playing four games in three days and back-to-back road trips to high level opponents, the Warriors knew it might not come easy, but South Winn picked up the 7-4 win over Wapsie Valley Thursday night.
The Warriors put up four runs early but gave up a big third inning to Wapsie Valley to draw the game even. Kuennen took the ball in the fourth and tossed three scoreless innings to take it to the seventh inning.
After a Carson Wenthold single with advancement on the bases to third, Keagen Streeter was intentionally walked to bring Kuennen to the plate. Kuennen hit big two-RBI double, followed by a Braiden Todd RBI single to take the 7-4 lead.
Kuennen finished out the game on the mound to secure the win tossing four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out five batters.
“This was a great way to finish out our first week. We talked about getting in baseball shape over this first set of games, and much of that is the mental fatigue factor that can happen over long days on the field. I was proud of our resiliency when faced some adversity tonight and give a lot of credit to our seniors to keeping things on the right course all week long,” said Coach Smith.

Trojan bats get a workout
On the road Thursday, the Turkey Valley baseball team (31, 3-1 UIC) picked up a pair of wins Thursday over North Fayette Valley (0-4, 0-2 UIC).
Just like Tuesday’s opening day game versus Kee, Thursday’s game one took an extra inning for a winner to be declared. Carson Busta led off the game with a double and scored on Noah Hanson’s double. The Trojans’ third double of the first frame by Caleb Kurtenbach gave the visitors an early 3-0 lead. NFV closed the gap in the bottom half of the first inning with two and took the lead with another pair of runs in the second. An Aidan Holthaus single in the third drove in Garrett Dietzenbach to tie the score 4-4; however, the TigerHawks responded with one of their own in the bottom of the frame. After scoreless fourth and fifth frames by both squads, TV took advantage of an Oliver Schmitt single to score C. Busta and Hanson and take a 6-5 lead. NFV knotted the score in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Hanson’s single in the eighth set up the TV win with a stolen base and wild pitch to advance him to third. Calvin Bodensteiner came through with a single to score the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the eighth, TV pitcher Schmitt sat NFV down in order to earn the win, 7-6.
Decorah sb bests TV
It was a quick five innings in Jackson Junctioin as the Turkey Valley softball team (0-1, 0-0 UIC) hosted Decorah (2-0, 0-0 NEIC) in non-conference action Thursday night. The Vikings took home the 16-2 win in three innings. A complete recap of the game will be available online at www.driftlessjournal.com.

In game two, the Trojans picked up their first two runs by C. Busta in the first and third frames, then scored twice in the fourth to lead, 4-0. NFV put two tallies on the board in the bottom of the fourth to narrow TV’s advantage. The Red and White responded with one in the sixth. The TigerHawks challenged the visitors in the sixth with three runs to make it 5-5. Singles by Schmitt and Dietzenbach, combined with and Russell Nieman double, pushed TV out front, 8-5, with NFV going down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Trojans the win, 8-5. Perfect start for Vikings
With a sweep over Crestwood (0-5, 0-2 NEIC) Thursday, the Decorah baseball team
(4-0, 2-0 NEIC) is off to a good start in the 2023 season.
“We were really pleased with both starting pitchers locating and throwing the ball effectively to allow us to play good team defense in both games. We did not swing the bats well in game one due to some effective pitching by Crestwood, but throughout the evening all hitters did a good job having multiple solid team at bats up and down the lineup. We are really pleased with how this team is working together to support each other,” said Coach Adam Riley.

CPU stops Decorah’s 14-3 season in OT
It certainly was a brutal ending to a great season by the Decorah boys soccer team Wednesday night in the substate final.
The Vikings tangled with Center Point-Urbana (12-3) at home, coming up short in overtime, 1-0.
Decorah ends the season with a 14-3 record.
CPU got the goal with little more than a minute remaining in overtime, with Decorah outshooting the Stormin Pointers, 20-7, to include shots-on-goal of 10-3.
“Decorah deserved a better result with the way we played but the ball didn’t bounce our way. I am proud of the work the boys
Crestwood struck first in game one with its lone run in the second inning before Decorah put up the tying run in the third, another in the fourth and two in the sixth for the 4-1 victory.

A final record of 14-3 is something that we can be proud of,” said Coach Zachary Shearer. “I want to thank the seniors for all their time and dedication to the program and team while they were here. They have helped create a wonderful soccer culture in Decorah and have built traditions that will carry on from year to year. I also want to thank the Decorah community.
