Athletes shine at Drake Relays

Athletes from Decorah and South Winn converged on the Blue Oval at Drake Stadium over the weekend and put on some shining performances. Decorah had several events on the track highlighted by Kelley Gates reaching the 100-meter dash finals. The senior posted the sixth-fastest time in the prelims at 11.12 seconds. In the finals, Gates ran the length of the track in 10.76 seconds to finish fourth overall. In the 4x100 relay, the Viking quartet of Dakota Johnson, Gates, Peyton Webb and Joshua Adam crossed the finish line in 43.25 seconds to take 20th place. For the Decorah girls, Renae Wilson took 23rd in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.16 seconds. Wilson also anchored the 4x100 relay to 28th place. In 50.34 seconds, it was Kelby Kerndt, Audrey Essa and Ava Holthaus combining with Wilson. South Winn’s Abby Wagner finished tied for 18th place in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 1 inches. She was the first South Winn competitor at the Drake Relays since Emmaleigh Ohrt in the discus in 2021.

Vikings win Winn. Co. meet The three Winneshiek County girls’ and boys’ golf teams met for the annual Winneshiek County CoEd Golf Classic at the Oneota Golf and Country Club outside of Decorah Friday. With last year’s event cancelled because of bad weather, the coaches agreed it was nice to sneak this year’s event in despite the inclement weather. A persistent cold mist and blustery winds caused some minor issues midway through the nine-hole event but the kids persevered.

For the boys Decorah linksters combined for 160 to win the triangular. Turkey Valley shot a season-low 171 to sandwich themselves between the Vikings and South Winn (174). Viking junior Carter Dlhy shot the lowest score of the night for medalist honors with a 37. Teammate Ben Bockman was the runner-up with a 39. Coming through with a 41 was Jackson Pipho, while Andrew Rhodes carded a 43 to complete Decorah’s scorecard. Others on the course for Decorah were Bradan Darling (44), Andrew Olson (44), Louis Bucksa (44) and Caden Hubka (45). The TV boys handled the weather conditions very well, marking the first time the Trojans had all six boys shoot below 50 in the same meet. Oliver Schmitt (41) and Nicholas Bernhard (41) led the way with identical scores, good for a tie for fifth overall. Brady Blong (44) and Caleb Kurtenbach (45) also counted, while Logan Busta (46) and Braylen Byrne (48) both came in under the 50. “This marked our lowest score of the year so far,” commented TV Coach John Reicks. “It was a good way to wrap up a very hectic week! Consistency is what we were looking for and we got it tonight. Moving forward, our next goal is to break 170 and play our best golf of the season over the course of the next two weeks.” Leading the Warriors with a 40 was Carson Streeter with fellow sophomore Cale Kleppe fashioning a 43. Coming through with a 44 was Jackson Goltz with Braid-

en Todd concluding the South Winn scorecard with a 47. Matson Winings (49) and Jordan Baumler (50) also toured the course for the Warriors. The weather wasn’t very cooperative today, but I really thought we really struggled to prepare and respond. It’s spring in Iowa, and sometimes the weather is going to provide tough conditions. But we need to be able to tough it out and play better,” said SW Coach Mike Wenthold. Girls action Like their boys counterparts, the Viking girls reigned over the triangular with a 204. The SW Warriors came through with their second-best score of the season at 214, while the Trojans combined for a 224. Decorah’s Maria Riveros topped the leaderboard with a 39, 10 strokes ahead of Brooke Steffans of South Winn who was the runner-up. Adding to the Viking total with a 52 was Sophia Fahey, while Riann Oberbroeckling carved out a 54. With a 59, Olivia Brynsaas concluded Decorah’s scoring. Isabella Sailor and Lulu Bellrichard were also touring the course for Decorah with both firing 61s. For the Warriors, Annie Ondrashek carded a 52 with Paige Jaster fashioning a 56. Katrina Hageman came through with a 57 to wrap up the scoring. Others on the Oneota course for South Winn included Avery Luzum (59), Chloe Wiltgen (59), Addison Timp (60) and Aubrey Hageman (61). The Trojan girls were just shy of their season-low score with Annika Bodensteiner leading the way with a 53 and Morgan Vsetefka just one stroke back at 54. Junior Brooklyn Kuennen (57) shot her career low, with Sofia Rivera (60) also counting for the Trojans. Emma Brincks (60), Kendall Kuennen (67), Karstyn Lukes (68) and Delaney Busta (73) got to battle the weather elements as well. “I was so proud of our girls and have no complaints despite a little prom anxiety heading into a busy weekend,” said TV Coach Reicks.
