Ranked netters meet in Waverly

A day later than originally scheduled Decorah, Boone and Waverly Shell-Rock, the No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7 ranked teams in Class 1A boys’ tennis met in Waverly for a triangular Friday. Battling colder than usual temperatures and strong winds, the Vikes fell to both squads. Decorah and Waverly-Shell Rock started the day and after singles Decorah found themselves down 2-4 against a strong veteran team. No. 1 Caden Branum took down Benny Ramker, 10-5, while Keaton Nalean-Carlson defeated Brady Willis, 10-7, in the No. 4 spot. Coach Anderson then challenged the team be aggressive in doubles and fight back. No. 1 and 2 doubles team battled to close wins and the No. 3 team fell just short as Decorah fell 4-5. The wind picked up and Decorah after a short 15-minute break took to the courts again another very good team in Boone. Again, Decorah found themselves down 2-4 after singles and mounted another strong effort in doubles only to fall short again losing 3-6 this time. In the singles action, Branum picked up his second victory of the day over Joe Jordan, 10-4. I sense this will become a turning point in the season and we’ll look back at this day saying that really jump started us,” said Coach Matt Anderson. “Overall, we showed big improvements in our aggressive attacking doubles play and I’m confident we’ll find our footing in singles this coming week.” Monday, the Vikings hosted Cotter in a make-up match from early April and will host Oelwein Tuesday, April 23, at 4 p.m. They will wrap up the week at Winona Senior Friday, April 26, at 4:30 p.m., and at Onalaska Saturday, April 27, at 9 a.m. Decorah 4, W-SR 5 Singles: No. 1 Caden Branum (Dec) won 10-5 over Benny Ramker (W-SR); No. 2 Liam Chamberlain (Dec) lost 11-10 (7-5) to Luca Myers (W-SR); No. 3 Aidan Nalean-Carlson (Dec) lost 10-5 to Matthew Judka (W-SR); No. 4 Keaton NaleanCarlson (Dec) won 10-7 over Brady Wills (W-SR); Dec. 5 Seth Bolson (Dec) lost 10-4 to Luis Portillo (W-SR); No. 6 Tristan Hunter (Dec) lost 11-9 to Daniel Becker (W-SR) Doubles: No. 1 Branuam/K. Warriors capture triangular over Turkey Valley, Tripoli

Golfers for Turkey Valley, South Winn and Tripoli endured cold temps and wind gusts Friday in a triangular at Jackson Heights Golf Course. Pictured clockwise from top left are TV’s Braylen Byrne teeing off; the trio of (l-r) TV’s Oliver Schmitt Braiden Todd and Caleb Kurtenbach; South Winn’s Avery Luzum on the fairway, Trojan Morgan Vsetecka on the Hole 1 teebox; and Warrior Carson Streeter setting up to tee-off. Friday’s dual meet between Turkey Valley and Tripoli turned into a triangular after Thursday’s dual between the Trojans and South Winn was rained out. The teams converged on Jackson Heights against brutal northwest winds gusting 30-40 mph and temperatures hovering around 40 degrees. “The kids from ALL three schools showed grit and determination with wind chill temperatures in the upper 20’s and low 30’s at times,” said TV coach John Reicks. “They fashioned some pretty impressive scores despite the weather conditions.” Narrow margin for boys South Winn eked out a narrow six-stroke win over the Trojans, 182 to 188. Tripoli finished the night with a 195. Turkey Valley’s Nicholas Bernhard fired a 41 to take home top medalist honors. Cale Halverson (43) of Tripoli finished second and Warrior Cale Kleppe (44) placed third. With 45s Trojan Caleb Kurtenbach and SW’s Jordan Baumler tied for fourth. Also counting for the Warriors were Matson Winnings with a 46 and Carver Wenthold with a 47. Carson Streeter toured the course to finish with a 48, while Braiden Todd carved out a 50. Jackson Goltz carded a 47 while Gavin Thuente produced a 51 in JV Warrior action. “The conditions were rough as it was very cold and very windy - definitely not good scoring weather. But we talked ahead of time

about the importance of competing instead of scoring, and the boys did just that. They battled the conditions and competed well and it was good enough to get the win,” said SW coach Mike Wenthold. Oliver Schmitt (49) and Brady Blong (53) also counted for the Trojans. Logan Busta and Braylen Byrne each came in with a 54. Calen Franzen (58) and Bode Balk (67) found themselves on the JV scorecard. “Warrior coach Mike Wenthold has another real solid team this year, so this was a good test for us at a critical juncture in our schedule,” noted Coach Reicks. “It was good to see us battle both the Warriors and the weather. I am optimistic that when the weather conditions improve, so will our scores.”

third place overall. Trojan junior newcomer Delaney Busta continues to impress coming through with a 62, and veterans Sofia Rivera and Brooklyn Kuennen also scored for the Trojans with 64s. Sophomores Annika Bodensteiner and Karstyn Lukes each carded a 65 to round out the TV card. Emma Brincks (69) and promising freshman Kendall Kuennen (73) also toured the Jackson Heights course. “Anyone of our girls can be our low scorer on any given day. Now we just need to elevate our game and the victories will follow. I am really proud of our girls. They worked very hard on a night where I am sure that they would have rather been anywhere else,” added Coach Reicks.

SW girls sweep medals In the girls’ division, South Winn took the title with a 237, while the Trojans came through with a 251. Tripoli did not have enough girls to card a team score. SW senior Katrina Hageman had the best score of the night with a 55 for medalist honors with teammate Julia Carnesi fashioning a 58 for runner-up honors. Brooke Steffans carded a 61 with Avery Luzum completing the Warrior scorecard with a 63. Also on the course were Paige Jaster with a 67, Kendra Elsbernd with a 72 and Aubrey Hageman with a 60. Junior Morgan Vsetecka led the Lady Trojans with a 61, good for

Next up for both It’s a busy week for the Warriors as South Winn hosted North Fayette Valley Monday and will be at Waukon Tuesday, April 23, and at Postville Thursday, April 25. Monday, the Trojans welcomed Postville to Jackson Heights Golf Course. The TV boys will host Sumner-Fredericksburg and New Hampton Tuesday, April 23, at 4 p.m., and travel to Elkader to square off with Central Thursday, April 25, at 4 p.m. The week will end with a close of the Winneshiek County schools as the Warriors and Trojans battle Decorah at Oneota Golf and Country Club at 3 p.m.
