Solar + Storage Mandated for North Carolina’s Duke Energy

Toward the end of March, the North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) gave its final order in its new solar net-metering plan. This includes a three-year transition period for customers to move from monthly credits to a time-of-use rate structure, which incentivizes the use of solar during peak hours.

Furthermore, the NCUC has also approved a $0.36/watt incentive for customers to switch to solar energy and has required Duke Energy to officially open a program promoting solar + storage installations within 90 days of the announcement. This means that Duke Energy customers will be able to access solar + storage incentives as soon as July.

Real Support for Solar + Storage

Up until now, few resources have been available to Duke Energy customers seeking solar + storage installations. This has kept the expansion of residential solar + storage capacity slow-going, stifling grid resilience and failing to compensate customers who contribute to it.
Now that Duke Energy is required to launch a solar + program ASAP, residents will finally be able to get just rewards for their investment in a stronger power network.
New Mandate Offers Certainty to Solar Customers
Leaders in the state’s solar industry have been celebrating the NCUC’s decision as one that will drive growth in North Carolina’s residential market. Will Giese, Southeast Regional Director for the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), issued an official statement in praise, citing the security that will now be provided to residents who are interested in the installation:

“This order is a step forward for North Carolina’s rooftop solar market that preserves the ability of residents to choose the power that works for them. North Carolina has boasted a strong utility-scale solar market for years while its rooftop solar industry has lagged. The solar and storage industry thanks the NCUC for approving a glide path that ensures monthly crediting for solar customers through 2026 and provides critical certainty for current customers and those considering going solar…”
North Carolina homeowners will have the assurance that their decision to purchase solar panels and batteries will have solid investment value. This summer, we’ll see far more ease among customers who may have otherwise been uneasy about making such a large buy.
