Drexel School System Vision Statement Drexel Schools seek to prove that the creation of a new model of Catholic schools is possible and scalable.

Guided by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the network of Drexel Schools forms the whole person through faith, knowledge, community, and by leveraging the resources and knowledge of a network of Catholic schools. Drexel Schools are recognized for sending forth into the greater community Christ-centered, compassionate, and confident leaders and problem solvers who exercise moral courage and service to others in their daily lives.

MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN, BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dear friends of the Drexel School System; I’d like to start by talking about what has happened in the three years since we began this project. Starting with a vision to expand the availability and quality of Catholic education in the Diocese of San Jose, we have transformed seven Drexel Schools into dynamic and effective cutting-edge educational institutions while implementing an infrastructure that provides consistent, innovative and impact driven results.

We have upgraded the infrastructure of all our schools, provided every student with access to an iPad and the best available education software; we’ve provided Professional Development to all our teachers and Principals through the Santa Clara University Academy of Blended Learning; and halted and in some cases reversed the trend of declining enrollment seen in so many Catholic schools throughout the nation. We have moved to a more datadriven instructional environment wherein each student receives an individual personalized program of development.

We have begun to achieve the academic results that we had envisioned. In the most recent testing period, 86% of our students exceeded the national average scores in Math. Think about that - 86%. We fully expect to continue to improve upon that level of performance going forward.

MESSAGE FROM OUR ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT It is with great enthusiasm that I write this letter as the Assistant Superintendent of the Drexel School system—a cutting edge, reimagination of Catholic education that transforms how we are able to serve families in our Catholic schools.

The Drexel School System is the result of bold thinking and an absolute commitment to Catholic education. Focused on centralizing services for financial sustainability and using data to drive instruction for rigorous and student-centered learning, the Drexel School System has empowered educators to align with the mission of transformative education in our reenergized and vibrant Catholic school communities.

The evident work of the Drexel School System since inception in 2013 has come to fruition as we open our third year in 2015. Site and System enrollment has started to increase, test scores and academic engagement have improved and the entire Drexel teaching community is engaged in assessment best-practice. The dream for a system focused on student learning and empowering educators has been realized in the work of Drexel, inspired by the liberated works of Saint Katharine Drexel and her passion for educational equity.

The success of the Drexel School System would not be possible without Bishop McGrath’s steadfast commitment to Catholic education, the generous support of our site and system donors, the active engagement and support of the Diocese of San Jose Department of Education and the evident talent and commitment of our Drexel School System faculty, staff and administration. CATHOLIC IDENTITY The Drexel School System is committed to maintaining deeply spiritual communities united in the Catholic faith. All Drexel School System employees are models of the values, heritage and traditions of the Catholic Church. The Drexel School System fully engages the wider community in support for Catholic education.

20+ parents were engaged in Parent teams to lead strategies for integrating faith in instruction 1800 students were actively engaged in the discovery of their faith 250+ weekly masses were held 200+ First Reconciliations and First Communions 500+ hours of on-campus ministry were led by clergy

Our school and teachers spread the peaceful, faith-filled Catholic message. Our teachers live it out by focusing on the task at hand and using technology to help us understand.

On our iPads, we get worksheets and are able to do activities that guide us to learn in all our subjects.

DREXEL SYSTEM LEADERSHIP The Drexel School System is committed to maintaining outstanding relationships between the governing authority of the Drexel School System Board of Directors. The collaborative spirit of the Drexel School System supports positive and productive leadership that is focused on stewarding resources for the Drexel Schools.

15 Actively engaged Board Members established and strengthened internal leadership and direction through the new Governance Model

3 Directors were welcomed to the system and championed the “Transformation of Catholic Education”.

Positions included Director of Operations, Blended Learning Specialist and Director of Admissions.

110 Teachers and 10 Administrators successfully completed their “Certificate in Blended Learning” through the School of Education and Counseling Psychology from Santa Clara University

7 Drexel Principals were trained in the Principal Leadership Program at Santa Clara University resulting in refined strategies for success in a blended learning environment

The Drexel initiative has afforded me a rare opportunity to cultivate a 21st-century classroom. The introduction of technology in the form of 1:1 iPads has allowed me to flip my classroom, engage in effective station rotation, and provided a means to further individual student growth through a blended learning schema.

ENROLLMENT & RETENTION The Drexel School System is committed to supporting the Drexel Schools in the active recruitment and retention of quality families committed to Catholic education. The Drexel School System has a vested interest in the healthy enrollment of each Drexel School and works collaboratively with site leaders and parent marketing teams to support the enrollment and retention needs of each school.

2.5% (100) More children were enrolled in Drexel Schools from 2013-2014 to 2014-2015 and stated the Drexel methodology as the primary reason

40 + Volunteer Parents have partnered with Principals and Pastors along with our system wide Director of Admissions to focus on Recruitment, Enrollment and Engagement while improving access to a Catholic Education

3% Less attrition occurred from 2013-2014 to 2014-2015 as a result of the integration of blended learning approach to education

Most Holy Trinity has truly been a blessing to our family. At Most Holy Trinity, they not only were taught to be strong and successful students, but also to be good, socially just individuals of their community. We have two children attending Most Holy Trinity and are so grateful that we can give them the invaluable gift of a Catholic school education at Most Holy Trinity.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY The Drexel School System is committed to ensuring that the Drexel Schools maintain a high standard of academic achievement. Championed by the full integration of Blended Learning, the Drexel School System supports and evaluates for effectiveness the successful incorporation of technology and data-driven instruction in the classroom.

131% Growth in Math test scores were realized on the MAP testing tool from Fall 2013 to Fall 2014 for grades 5-8

1000 iPads for students were configured and managed daily for applications such as DreamBox, STMath, Mathletics, Reasoning Mind, Aleks, eSpark and more.

1200 Primary grade students demonstrated increased levels of interest in Math after utilizing “Think Through Math” applications on the iPads in conjunction with teacher-student interface opportunities

90% of Parents surveyed indicated that Blended Learning in the Drexel School System is directly impacting their child’s interest in learning

$18M School operating budget oversight was provided by the Board of Trustees $2.1M in Fundraising donations were received from a collective of 2 Foundations, 1 Corporate Grant, and 7 Individual Donors against a goal of $1.8M
