GOALS When looking at where I want my career to head, I am looking to join a firm that will push my limits and make me expand past my comfort zone. We mentor robotics teams which compete on a worldwide scale in the VEX Robotics Competitions.

ABOUT ME

HELLO, My name is Caleb Dreibelbis and I am a Fourth year undergraduate student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I am majoring in Architecture while also pursuing a minor in Landscape Architecture. I was born and raised in Nebraska and have always been a fan of being active and always being up to something new.

That, I suppose, is where my interest in designing recreational buildings and assembly buildings comes from. This portfolio is a collection of my work during my time at UNL, representing my skills at different scales of architecture, as well as a specific hobby of mine that has lead to and inspired a lot of my work. I hope to demonstrate my passion for architecture as well as some unique qualities I can bring to the table to show my interest in learning more about the profession.

The Depot Drive Fitness Center started as a plan to repurpose land in Wayne, NE into a neighborhood.

Though the fitness center was not in the original plan, through conversation and zoning talk, the idea for one became a popular idea that I tasked myself to solve. The fitness center sits at the end of a boulevard that runs along the old railway line, which is where it gets its name.

The first step of the design phase was to encompass the round-a-bout that runs along the boulevard and street.

Another thing the building incorporates is the three surrounding contexts into the design of its interior and exterior facades along with the roof shape and structure.

The three contexts used are main street represented with

brick, residential represented with wood, and industrial represented with aluminum and a silo feature on the top.

The interior is split into three sections for the three contexts. The first section is the reception and office areas which offer access to all aspects of the fitness center. The second section is the pool which would be accessible to all ages of the community due to its zero-entry pool entry. Another section is the gym which gives way to the cardio area which sits on the second floor. The cardio area allows views to the gym and pool allowing parents to watch and do other activities while also maintaining supervision of their children.

The Niobrara State Park Visitor Center sits at the entrance of one of Nebraska’s most historic, but also highly underused State Parks. The Park managers look to use this visitor center as an eye-catching piece to attract the attention of people passing by on the highway and give them an informational and educational place to stop. From there, they can choose to explore the park more and discover its beauty or continue their way.

The challenge with this project is that it started as a museum to Standing Bear and throughout the design process got changed several times and downsized to a visitor center with an educational attachment to it. It also sat on a remarkable 12 feet of elevation change for the building and another 43 feet for the parking lot.

This required a lot of regrading and allowed my partner and eye to design the only proposal that utilized the

grade change to allow for storage and utility which the stakeholders desperately needed to be added into a basement.

The design works to express the history of the site and capture the iconic views that the park has to offer of the connection between the Niobrara and Missouri Rivers. It takes on a vernacular form with wood and sandstone materials in it to reference the CCC pavilion that was destroyed due to flooding. It works to create an atmosphere that allows the workers to engage with the public if needed but also maintains their privacy if they would like it. The educational area and addition of a porch create a welcoming environment that creates engagement with the park designed to intrigue people to explore it more.

A NEW TAKE ON AN OLD PARK STYLE

The idea of rainwater collection is an ongoing topic of discussion as the amount of drinkable water continues to deplete. This folly was designed around supplying enough water through rainwater collection that additional plumbing would not be necessary. In addition to the rainwater collection, the area is designed to be used as an outdoor kitchen and seating area in a small 25x25 sq/ft space.

The design is inspired by the Hemeroscopium House which uses precise weight distribution and cantilevers to create inner volumes that are used for various activities.

From the house, I made a model that I thought best

represented the important attributes that allowed it to stand and began to design my folly.

The folly was to be built upon a cage suspended above a reflective pool. The cage would hold the kitchen and seating while being held up by a beam and column structure to the side which would counteract the weight of the cage using a large boulder at its end. The roof of the folly is slightly slanted to allow for water to run along its exterior to the filter which is attached to a tank used by the sink and allows excess water to drain into the reflective pool.

INNOVATION AND ENGINEERING CLASH PAST PARTICIPANT/MENTOR

MY MENTOR: DAN MALINE

VEX Robotics has had a tremendous impact on a lot of the decisions I have made throughout my life. I started the program when I was in the 7th grade and participated as a competitor tell I graduated in 2020. That said there were a lot of things that I took away from it. To begin, this was where I figured out my career path. That might seem weird but let me put it this way. Though I built a lot of robots, designing each part so it can function properly was where I really strived. Designing was the path I wanted to take and that is why I chose architecture as my career path.

When I look back on it, robotics is also where I developed a lot of my professional skills. Competitions included aspects such as interviews, team building, and respect for others in victory or defeat. It also taught me failure is okay. There were times when I wanted to give up but drive and determination is what kept me in it and allowed the teams I was a part of to win national competitions and compete against teams from across the world.

Now that I am a mentor for the teams I once competed on I have a new way of looking at it. Though I was a leader while I participated, having kids look up to me
