Page 4 The 20th annual War in the Oasis 2011 Shire of Ambergard (Grant County, WA) March 19th, 2011 Hail An Tir! The Shire of Ambergard invites you once again to our annual Oasis War War In The Oasis 2011 ** ―Dead from behind‖ applies in all scenarios, just do it right!!! ** Scenario 1; Open Field 30 minutes, unlimited resurrections, archers welcome, pole weapons welcome, fight to the last man, last man from army wins the point for the scenario. Scenario 2; Iron Squires 25 minutes, armies break themselves into units, Knights divided equally to units and command them, squires/unbelted fighters have unlimited resurrections, knights get 1 resurrection. As your unit‘s Knights are eliminated, squires/unbelted unit joins up to another unit. Squires are resurrected by field marshall, Squires must ―make haste‖ to resurrecting marshall (run Forest run!!!!) Knights must travel to resurrection point. The army with the most Knights at the end of Scenario wins point. Scenario 3; Chivalry vs. The World 30 minutes, (15 minutes per army inside the castle) Armies have unlimited resurrections. Squires must ―Make Haste‖ to resurrection points! Fight to the last man. The last man earns the scenario point for his ―original‖ army. (Archers get a break this scenario.) Scenario 4; Feed the Crows No time limit, open field, no resurrections: dramatic and loud deaths are encouraged. (Die where you are struck, but not to worry….. Squires must put themselves to the hazard to clear the dead.) Last man wins the point for their army for the scenario. Scenario 5; The Resurrector No Time Limit, castle battle, unlimited resurrections. 15 minutes per army inside the castle. (Upon the whistle, the occupying army charges out the door, and the new army runs around the flanks of the castle to occupy: **Caution** don‘t get ―captured‖ inside the castle by the invading army or you become cap-
www.dregate.com tive. (captive means you are grabbed and your captor yells ―prisoner!‖) Scenario point is won when there is no one left to run out the castle door! SO FAR, THESE ARE THE SCENARIOS and the winning army gets a prize supplied by Sir Lachlan Food is included in the gate fee. Food will be brought to the war field and for those with more time the Tavern will have beef stew in cannon balls and more simple hearty fare. Beverages are also available although the SITE IS DRY. War/ Event Information: The War Field is at Oasis Park, 2541 Basin Street SW, Ephrata and it will open Saturday, March 19th at 9:30 am. To get there take your best route to Basin Street in Ephrata, Washington. (The main thoroughfare through Ephrata is Hwy 28/Basin Street). OASIS PARK is located at the very southwest edge of town on Hwy 28. Watch for the SCA signs. The Tavern opens at 9:30 am and will have food and games and and warmth if the day is chilly. It is also located in Ephrata on Hwy 28/112 Basin Street. The "Lady Agata's Memorial Rapier Tourney" will be held after the heavy fighting. Field gate opens at 9:30am. Site fee(includes lunch) is $8.00 for adults, $4.00 for youth (8-17) and children 7 and under free. Nonmember adult charge is $5.00, so bring your member card. Page 5 Dregate General Meeting Minutes Shire meeting February 20, 2011 Called to order 2:16 In attendance: Aelfwyn, Kit, Conuil, Oso, Cerdic, Tio, Christa, Dalbach, Dog. 1. Officer reports: -Seneschal a. 1st quarter reports due. Killian needs reports in by March 15th. b. update of shire email lists. Anybody not getting updates that wants them? c. seneschal reports that SCA bod will be making more changes to price structures. They have cut funds to Kingdoms for newsletters, so chances are we'll be getting Criers in electronic form before long. 2011 membership fees have already increased. Also: Updates to kingdom law- Mailed newsletters disappearing/ Moving toward electronic format. Number of official events that make it on to the kingdom calendar have decreased College/Canton=1 Shire=2 Barony=3. Kingdom events or combined events with other branches do not count toward this total. I do not think the totals will affect us this year. We might need to rethink what we do for events for calendar. Declining participation does affect us and our financial bottom line. With declining numbers (even with Royal presence) should Red Lantern go back to a local event/potluck to make room for another event? Should we combine with another branch for Fur and Feather? 2. Financial committee membership open financial meeting put on calendar for Thursday the 24th at 7pm at Runa and Cerdic‘s. -Exchequer Unable to attend meeting but in touch with Kingdom -Arts & sciences – 6 bags were created for largesse. We need 4 more. They are in the process of being contructed. It was discussed that we make bags as a fund raiser and sell them at farmers market. Aelfwyn will allow use of her day shade. Aelfwyn did an A&S demo and asks that people volunteer to teach other arts -Iron key – All iron key is back except for one person. An offer was made by Tio that that person can come up and spend the day with him and armor would be made. Tio mentioned a touring heavy tournament that the shire could get into -Chatelaine – Plans to put flyers up in many locations 3. fundraisingIt was discussed and agreed that cooking for the TCCC fundraisers would be an easy fund raiser for us as well. -Wall rental- Wenatchee ren faire wants the wall again. This year the event spans over two days so a crew will be needed to take the wall down and bring it back 4. Upcoming events a. Melissa's Celebration Feb 26th at the United Church of Christ, Tonasket - 1 pm Finger foods – no garb and no crying. Fun stories only b. The fur and feather has been postponed to a future date. c. Saffron Pike was discussed with not much coming of it d. Revel autocrat and feastocrat still needed ASAP. It was discussed that perhaps we could do a potluck instead of the usual feast but that could not be agreed upon

A note from the Shire Heavy Champion An apology from your heavy champion, I Tio, heavy champion this year of Dregate would like to express my sincerest apologies to the populace of Dregate for my admonishment of all at the recent champions tourney. I realize that it was heavy handed and not necessary because after all the great populace of Dregate is wonderful and would never have done the vile things I alluded to. I was way out of line and regret my actions, I will never do anything that will cause further embarrassment to our great shire ever again. I will show this with my actions as we move forward. Tullia d'Aragona By the sixteenth century, when Tullia d'Aragona peddled her glamorous wares around Rome, Ferrara, and Florence, the GNP of the Italian Renaissance owed an astonishing amount to the prostitution industry. In Venice alone, 11,000 hookers serviced a city of 150,000. When one pope tried to rid Rome of strumpets, boosters complained that the place would lose one of its greatest charms. Now Tullia was no tawdry onenight stand. A culture maven, she lived in one of Florence's high-rent districts, her beautiful villa filled with books and works of art. Known as the hostess with the mostest (action, that is), Tullia kept dinner conversa-tion sparkling, witty, and erudite. As the well-subsidized biological daughter of a cardinal, she had resources, which let her become a poet of sorts and the leader of a popular salon on platonic love. Tullia wore the cutting edge in fashion-and

that, in fact, was the major gripe put forth by well-to-do wives and other respectable females throughout Italy. Since the upscale sellers of sensual delights wore fabulous jewels, sumptuous furs, and clothes identical to their own, nobody could tell who played for pay and who didn't. The high-ranking women of Florentine society put molto pressure on the Grand Duke, who finally decreed that local courtesans had to wear a veil with a yellow stripe on it, which quickly got nicknamed "the whore's mirror. In this manner, European courtesans came to resemble taxis. In the city of Florence, you flagged down the one with yellow stripes; in Bern, Switzerland, it was the women wearing green coats; in Toulouse, France, white duds indicated a professional. Tullia, however, had such pull with the duke that he gave her the green light, allowing her to be seen in public without a "whore's mirror." Being a suavely sophisticated and aristocratic dirty old man, naturally the duke didn't put it in quite such colorful terms: "in recognition of the rare knowledge of poetry and philosophy which is hers to the joy of esteemed minds," he said, "Tullia need not observe the regulation."

Get your SCA year started off the Honor War way. We are planning many unique war fighting scenarios and rapier scenarios, as well as numerous Archery shoots for fun and prizes, Arts & Sciences galore, and the very first Challenge of the Copper Dragon! This will be a combination riddling contest & scavenger hunt, & fun awaits for all. Help us choose our Champions in Archery, Brewing, Rapier and A&S. Be amazed at Lyonsmarche‘s ever-popular lentils! Persona Development— HL Julilla Sempronia Salve! Sum Iulia Sempronia, uxor Marcus Valerius Firmus. Amicae ―Iulilla‖ vocat. Staying in persona in the SCA is, despite the extremely common practices of assuming a character and placing it in a certain period in history, is not widely practiced at events, where, despite the period garb, pavilions and armor, it‘s quite likely to overhear a conversation about such modern intrusions as computers and cell phones. The following, I hope, will give those interested in developing a three-dimensional character find ways to have something to say in conversation after they‘ve introduced themselves (by the bye, the opening paragraph says, ―Greetings! I am Julia Sempronia, wife of Marcus Valerius Firmus. Friends call me ‗Julilla.‘‖ I have been interested in ancient Roman daily life for over 14 years and actively incorporating what I know into my SCA persona for well over seven. It began with a simple desire to look beyond the major events to discover the lives of ordinary people: what they ate, what they wore, what sort of houses they lived in and what sort of values they had. When I was preparing for the Shire of Appledore‘s Tournament of the Golden Swan, a persona challenge for female characters, I began developing a timeline from 400-450 CE, which incorporated not only the major events leading up to the fall of the western Roman empire in 476, but also the major milestones in Julilla‘s life: when I was born, when I was married, the births of my children and (occasionally) where my family‘s life may have intersected with major events. Even if you don‘t have the time to read volumes on the time period you are interested in, it is helpful to perform this exercise. A key element of the Golden Swan tournament is the ability to stay in character (in all public spaces) for the 36 hours of the challenge. To do so, one must move far beyond name, place of birth and
knowledge of those events your character may have been close to. Fortunately, very few players at SCA event are forced to take on such a challenge, however rewarding it may be, but see if you are able, at your next event, to stay in persona for five minutes. For starters, think about how you introduce yourself. At no time does a movie actor introduce his character by stating ―hello, I am King Edward VI from Great Britain during the early 20th century. For that matter, I would venture to assert that none of us introduces ourselves that way in everyday conversation. Let people draw their conclusion on your time period by your garb and your conversation. Next, while I mentioned major events, few of us really spend all that much time talking about them in everyday life, and it is just as likely that our spiritual ancestors spent more time talking about their families, the likelihood of a good crop yield and the expansions they planned to make to their dwellings. When you‘re tempted to talk about issues you‘re facing in your everyday life, see if you can put a character spin on them, such as, ―earlier this year when the Vandal king Genseric sacked Rome, we had to destroy an entire year‘s yield of wine from our estates and now we‘re afraid we won‘t be able to pay our taxes.‖ Developing a full-fledged SCA persona is not the work of a minute, and how far you may choose to dig in to your character is completely up to you. From I90 in Spokane take Division Street/Highway 395 North to the town of Kettle Falls, WA. Continue west towards Lake Roosevelt, just barely before the big bridge over the Columbia River (Barneys Jct. Bridge), turn South (left) on Boise Road and travel 3 miles to the campground. There are USFS signs and SCA signs will be posted liberally. From the west take Highway 20E, immediately after you cross the Columbia River turn right on Boise Road and continue 3 miles to the site. Paved roads all the way, The one cop in Kettle Falls is bored so watch your speed! There is an unmarked RR crossing by the mill - watch for trains coming. Amenities: Potable water onsite Pit privies and portas There are numerous grocery stores and a Super Walmart within 10 miles of the site in Colville, WA. Hospital in Colville. The town of Kettle Falls which offers all amenities including grocery, liquor store and motels. Propane, showers, laundry and beer are 5 miles away at Exxon Station

Some SCA History How did the SCA begin? The SCA started in 1966, when a few friends who were history buffs and science fiction/ fantasy fans hosted a big outdoor party in Berkeley, California. The invitation stated that a Tournament would be held on the first of May, summoning "all knights to defend in single combat the title of 'fairest' for their ladies." Everyone enjoyed the first tournament so much that they agreed a second should be run, but in a larger setting. In order to reserve one of the public parks for the gathering, the organizers needed to list a name for their group on the application. Since recreating the Middle Ages in 20thcentury Berkeley was an anachronism (something "out of time"), and because the goal was creativity, they came up with "The Society for Creative Anachronism". It was a spur-of-the-moment invention; they had no idea that the name would stay with their group into the future. Word of the SCA spread via friends and science-fiction fandom. There were 6 events held in the first year, and 9 in the second. In the third year, a chapter was founded on the East Coast (the East Kingdom – distinguishing it from the West Kingdom); the Californians incorporated the SCA as a non-profit educational society, and away they went. Since 1966, the Society has grown to nineteen kingdoms, which cover the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, South Africa, and Australia. There are over 30,000 paid members of the corporation, and the total number of participants is around 60,000 people.
