ORGANISATIONAL MEMBERSHIP OF THE
INTERNATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION
2
The International Bar Association has two main types of membership: full organisational membership and sustaining organisational membership.
Full organisational membership is open to bar associations and national law societies.
Full Organisational Membership Full organisational membership is open to bar associations and national law societies. If the application is successful, the organisation may then appoint up to two individuals to sit on the IBA Council. These two IBA Councillors will be entitled to vote at meetings of the Council. This type of membership is the most expensive of the two.
Sustaining Organisational membership Sustaining organisational membership is open to any regional or non-national bar association, law society or organisation of members of the legal profession, or to national organisations that have been denied full membership. Sustaining members can still appoint two Councillors, but those Councillors will not be entitled to a vote unless by prior agreement with the country’s full membership organisation.
The Bar Issues Commission All organisations at both levels of membership automatically become part of the Bar Issues Commission and are entitled to appoint up to three individuals as members without cost.
