Help with Court and Legal Fees Legal help for court appearances can be expensive, leaving many people unable to afford representation. In a lot of cases, there are more options to explore than simply paying a solicitor for representation. In most jurisdiction there are usually various avenues to explore that may result in free or reduced court and legal fees.

Legal Aid or Judicial Assistance Program Legal aid or judicial assistance may apply to individuals who are on a low income and are attending court for certain specific issues, such as those experiencing domestic violence, discrimination, the prospect of homelessness, or a violation of their human rights. Some people may also qualify for legal aid or judicial assistance as criminal defendants.

Many solicitors offer a small amount of legal advice (usually around 30 minutes) for free. Others will offer to take on a case for a fixed fee, so the

client knows exactly how much it will cost upfront.

In some cases, especially in Anglo-Saxon jurisdictions, solicitors work on what is known as a conditional fee agreement, more popularly known as ‘no win, no fee’ or ‘contingency fee basis’. In these cases, the solicitors’ costs are taken from compensation should the case be successful, rather than paid upfront.
