THE VISION
WE’RE ALL DIRECTING, (AT SOME LEVEL).
You never know who you’ll meet in a mastermind. I was quite giddy meeting an award-winning Hollywood marketing veteran who has taken his experience and transitioned into writing, directing and producing business stories that help companies communicate why they matter. Navigating a small business budget is wildly different than a Hollywood movie budget. Characters are similar yet so different. While I believe we’re all directors at some level. We pick out our clothes or is it our wardrobe? We drive around to various places or is it our set of a video shoot. We meet up with friends or are they co-stars? Am I watching a blockbuster or my friends reel? I often tell clients the minute they begin video, “welcome to the entertainment world.” We all get to decide do we play a big role or stay behind the scenes. In my case I enjoy both in my small business. Which do you prefer?
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Could Financial Joy and data art have a national stage? What if your business data wasn’t merely a report card, but a selfportrait? This August publication invites you to become fascinated with who you were last month: Where you showed up, what you created, which communities captured your attention, whose voices influenced you, and what results followed matter. When we turn those patterns into something visual, we can see our stories more clearly and decide what we want to repeat, reduce, or rewrite. My conversation with moviemarketing veteran, Rich Bornstein, helped sharpen this idea. Rich reminded me not to bury the lead, that familiar faces capture our attention, and that a poster’s job is to make us curious enough to look closer. That inspired me to think beyond movies. What if we created posters for the communities that shape our businesses?
What if we could see who moves each room, where trust lives, and where our videos, ideas, and content might travel next? Inside this issue, I invite you to build your own visual virtual landscape. Choose the communities that matter, recognize their leaders and connectors, and create a poster for each one. Then step back and study the complete picture—not with criticism, but with curiosity. This isn’t about becoming a celebrity. It’s about understanding your patterns, strengthening your relationships, and becoming more intentional about the role you want to play in the next chapter.

The 3 Questions Behind Every Great Brand Video
See Your Sphere For 17 years now I’ve been networking online and have collected over 100 Facebook groups. It’s a visual problem seeing them all in a spreadsheet. Gulp.
Turn those lists into visuals!
With all the big personalities online and the remarkable brands, I needed to fix it. A few months ago I had a team member start making ‘movie posters’ about the list. It was an impossible task as she hadn’t been following these fun personalities like I had over the years. Most business owners belong to more communities than they can actively nurture. We join Facebook groups, Chambers, referral organizations, masterminds and professional associations. We accumulate hundreds or thousands of digital connections. But can we actually see where our influence lives? I believe data deserves beauty. We regularly track leads, appointments, sales and revenue, but our relationships are often left invisible. We may know that a customer came from a Facebook group or that an introduction happened at a networking event, yet we rarely step back and examine the complete landscape surrounding that opportunity.
EACH POSTER REVEALS THE ANATOMY OF ONE COMMUNITY. TOGETHER, THE POSTERS REVEAL THE LANDSCAPE OF YOUR INFLUENCE.
That is why I’m inviting business owners to create community posters. Choose five communities that have shaped your business. Give each one a title, visual identity and short description. Capture it’s personality, purpose, leaders, trusted connectors and memorable characters. You might also include its size, activity level, referrals, revenue, endorsements or opportunities earned. You’ll find every community has a cast.
Then arrange the posters into a visual landscape. The poster isn’t the strategy. It helps us see the strategy. Which communities have produced clients, friendships, referrals or speaking invitations? Which ones feel active and aligned? Where have you contributed consistently? Where are you known but not yet trusted? Which group looks impressive but has never created a meaningful opportunity? While the phrase “sales territory is debatable,” I feel it’s important to be tracking where our results come from and for me it’s always from a member of a community. Sales is hard enough so this creative project makes it fun!
As the landscape takes shape, patterns begin to emerge. We can see where we have roots, where we are only visiting and where a new opportunity may be waiting. This isn’t about turning business owners into movie stars. It is about recognizing the people, places and patterns shaping our progress. Create the posters. Build the landscape. Study what it reveals. Your sphere of influence is already there. This activity simply makes it visible. Before trying to become more visible, notice who already moves the room. Then consider how your own consistent, human presence might help you earn a meaningful role there too.
9 considerations when making your digital playground map Whether you see Facebook & Linkedin as your mission field, your sales territory, or a place for discovery and fun… getting key on your favorite places is helpful.
1 1.Make a community poster for each online group. A. Name it. B. Choose a featured person or photo to inspire your connection to it. C. Note the size; consider of they are members, runners, residents, video makers etc. D. State your current purpose. (Not sure? Consider running a SWOT analysis. Think of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.) E. If the groups mission is clear, consider that as your tagline.
2 1. Sketch a map with a visual horizon, or sketch of your current digital terrain. Use ai for inspiration. 2. Use each group graphic as a sign or billboard that represents the space. 3. Consider adding your own key with important metrics, objectives, reminders, etc.
It was my Mom who introduced me to the idea of a sales territory. She definteily had one in her lending career and this infographic or poster to the right was created after I gave ChatGPT a written story of her influence in my life about sales territories. I added a few photos and boom, my story came to life! Now, if you’re new to business you may feel like the playing field is dry and distant or rich and flush with opportunity. Choosing a relevant landscape is half the fun! I encourage you to use your favorite mediums with this project. Doodle them or sketch them. Use mixed media. Try it in canva or with ai. Sometimes a combincation can bring out the best final and sharable piece. I expect the visuals to change season to season because communities change and our effort shifts. If I’m helping you with video, this will be one of our first strategy sessions.
LEAD WITH THE GOOD PART Many business owners save their strongest insight for the end of a video. We introduce ourselves, build the background, explain the process and gradually work toward the big takeaway. But the audience may never make it that far. In a recent conversation, movie marketing and video expert Rich Bornstein reminded me not to “bury the lead.”
“Sometimes that big takeaway should be at the front,” he said. “That draws the audience in.” Rich learned this lesson while working in editing rooms. An editor once took a section from the end of a project and moved it to the beginning. At first, Rich questioned the decision. Then he saw how much stronger the story became. The same technique applies to our business videos, presentations, articles and social media posts. Start with the reason someone should care. Lead with the surprise, transformation, tension or useful idea. Once you have earned the audience’s attention, you can explain how you arrived there.
This is especially important when speaking to people who don’t already know us. They aren’t patiently waiting for the good part. We may have 30 seconds to capture their interest and 60 seconds to prove that the content is worth continuing. Long interviews and podcast appearances still have value, but simply posting a 45 minute conversation is not always an effective content strategy. Find the strongest moments, condense them, highlight them and bring them forward.
The same principle applies to a community poster. It cannot communicate every person, program, benefit and opportunity. It needs one strong image and a few words that make us curious enough to look closer. Before publishing your next video, article or poster, look at the ending. Is your most valuable idea hiding there? If it is, move it to the beginning. Lead with the good part.
WHO MOVES THE ROOM? You don’t need to be the star of every community. You do need to understand who shapes the room. Every group has visible leaders, but influence rarely stops with the person whose name appears at the top. There are welcoming connectors, trusted contributors, referral partners, event organizers, culture keepers and quiet people everyone turns to for advice. These are the movers and shakers who give a community its energy. I’ve also noticed something powerful about leaders who create consistent, casual videos. They become elevated in our minds, not quite to celebrity status, but certainly beyond being another name on a membership list. We see their faces, hear their voices and experience their personalities. We learn what they care about, how they think and what makes them laugh. Over time, we don’t simply recognize them. We begin to feel connected to them. We may admire them, trust them or even adore them. That familiarity creates influence. Community leaders don’t need studios, scripts or perfectly polished performances. Some of the most effective videos are simple updates, quick observations, personal invitations and behind-the-scenes moments. Consistency helps members feel welcomed, informed and included. The leader becomes a familiar face, not because they demand the spotlight, but because they keep showing up. As you create a poster for one of your important communities, think beyond its logo and member count. Who belongs in the picture? Who founded the group? Who appears consistently on video? Who starts conversations, introduces people, shares opportunities or makes members feel valued? Rich Bornstein’s experience with movie marketing helped me see this more clearly. A movie poster may feature recognizable stars, but its larger purpose is to make us curious about the story and the people inside it. Our community posters can do the same. They help us identify where attention, affection, trust and influence already live. Come network, all these examples click through! The goal isn’t to make ourselves look famous. It is to recognize the community’s cast, understand its culture and decide how we can contribute to its story.
