“Pride

of the Upper Cumberland”

In 1947, Mr. Kenneth Kirby transferred from Elbow school and organized a band program at Smith County High School, as well as at the adjacent grade school.

There had been no school band program at either school since before WWII. The program has been in existence since that time. Through the decades, the band gained national attention by performing for two Presidential Inaugural parades for Bill Clinton and Al Gore, Jr.

In the past, the band won over 72 marching band championships and have made multiple appearances at Disney World’s “Magical Music Days”. The “Pride of the Upper Cumberland” Marching Band is one of the oldest traditional marching bands in Tennessee and has been the home of some of the nation’s most prominent and accomplished musicians.
