She stayed there the entire day. A friend of mine lives on that street and when she saw her, she called me and i went out to meet her. It was love at first sight! The poor girl was shivering, she was so cold. After warming her up, she promptly fell asleep in my lap. On May 6th, Talia gave birth to 6 perfect and beautiful babies! Sadly, two babies that we named Mocha and Pudge did not make it...Mocha left us on May 12th and Pudge went to join Mocha on May 15th. Of the 4 remaining puppies, 2 have now found their forever homes and 2 are available for adoption.

By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon For twenty-three years he had always been there, beside me, to my right because he knew I didn’t hear well out of my left ear. Two guys, almost twenty years apart in age, from different parts of the country, connected by our love of college basketball. He was from Kansas; attended KU when legendary coach Phog Allen and Wilt Chamberlain ruled the round ball world. I’m from North Carolina, Tobacco Road, land of Jim Valvano, David Thompson, Michael Jordan, Christian Laettner, Tim Duncan, and James Worthy. We did have Dean Smith in common, as Dean had played with Wilt at Kansas and then became the head coach at the University of North Carolina. We were different in many ways; he was small in stature, where I’m a large guy, Mutt and Jeff if you will, but we both loved the game. College basketball bridged any gap that may have separated us and we became, most importantly, great friends.

We had both been attending college basketball games since we were in college and argued continually about which conference was the better. It was a conversation that neither one of

that would eventually win the National Championship in 1994.

We marveled at the talent of Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Michigan State, and Duke in the 1990’s.

Arizona, Florida, Stanford, UNC, and Kansas again reigned during the next decade as some of the best college basketball programs. We traveled to many different cities and enjoyed the first and second rounds the most. The early rounds always included eight different teams, with six games played, during a three-day event. Some years we attended all three rounds, including the “Final Four.” I can’t count how many basketball games we have seen together.

We always filled out our brackets before the tournament. Lunch and bragging rights for a year was the winner’s prize. Even after we had both retired, we entered the drawing for tickets each year and never missed but once (2006); I guess they had just gotten used to seeing our names on the list.

Along the way, we sat beside and behind many stars of the game like Magic Johnson, Bobby Jones, Ralph Sampson, Elvin Hayes, Danny Manning, Mitch Kupchak, John Lucas, Robert Horry, and Bobby Hurley.

We also met the parents of many great players at the restaurants at night.

We met Coaches Norm Stewart, Eddie Sutton, Digger Phelps, Ray Myers, Rick Majerus, Jud Heathcoat, Nolan Richardson, Don Haskins, Bobby Cremins, Jim Boeheim, Bo Ryan, Norm Sloan, Leonard Hamilton, Andrew Helton, Jimmy Dykes, Fran Fraschilla, Tubby Smith, Willis Wilson, Tim Floyd, Guy Lewis, Sean Woods, Perry Clark, Cy Alexander and many many others.

Our friend and Islander Dale Bowers us could lose.

Dale Bowers was one of the first people I met when I moved to Corpus Christi back in 1985.

Dale worked for KZTV, the local CBS affiliate, selling television advertising, and the company I was with had just purchased the local Pizza Hut franchise. With Pizza Hut being a major sponsor of NCAA Basketball and CBS the home of “March Madness,” we managed to snag some tickets each year to the NCAA Tournament.

In 1999, after 25 years without a basketball program, Dale and I purchased season tickets for the Islanders, the local upstart team for Texas A&M University here in Corpus Christi.

The program was just restarting with a new head coach by the name of Ronnie Arrow. We were excited and could not wait for the season to begin. Our tickets were always on the floor, front row, across from our home team’s bench; the best seat in the house, as far as we were concerned. While sitting there together each year, we stuffed ourselves with the college game and met hundreds of great kids, seeking their dream to play at the next level. We befriended many referees, who always made it a point to come by and say hello to us and talk basketball.

We met numerous coaches and players from the other teams and many of the parents of the kids playing for the Islanders. Radio and TV announcers became first-name friends. Gary Bender, Cheryl Miller, and Don Crique were just s few. We were honored when many of the past Islander players made it a point to come say “hello” to us after they graduated, when they returned to a game.

The first year we attended the NCAA Tournament (March Madness) together was in 1990, in Austin, Texas, where we saw the beginnings of a great Arkansas program

There is nothing like the excitement of the NCAA Tournament. Fans consist of the oldest of the alumni to the youngest member born into that family. Tradition, pep bands, cheerleaders, high profile head coaches and players, and the “one and done” concept are the ingredients of sports at its best. Win and you move on, lose and you go home. The seeding of 64 teams insures that there will be an upset along the way. Dale and I got to see firsthand programs like Princeton, Gonzaga, George Mason, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and Butler take the college basketball world by storm.

Dale Bowers was a true basketball fan in every sense of the word. At the beginning in every season, he would email me a copy of the new rules that had been put in place for college basketball. He liked knowing the rule changes and how they may impact the game he loved.

Dale began to feel poorly the first of this year.

He was a proud and private man who only shared his misfortune if I asked. Dale left his seat vacant on September 1, 2013. He was 80 years of age.

If there is a basketball Heaven, my friend Dale Bowers will be there. As for me, I have a vacant seat to next year’s Islander games. Rest well, Dale, and yes, I still owe you lunch from last year’s tournament. You were always a winner.

Finally, he reportedly earned a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that later engendered a harsh rebuke from his coach, Kevin Sumlin.

Asked afterward if he was ready to pull Manziel before the penalty, Sumlin said: “Nope.”

Offensive lineman Cedric Ogbuehi, for one, didn’t have a problem with Manziel’s antics.

“That’s how he is. He’s a fiery guy and that’s what we love about him,” he said. “He’s not quiet. He’s not shy. He’s going to be loud and aggressive and that’s what makes him Johnny Football. So we love it.”

For Rice, Taylor McHargue threw for 180 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions and Charles Ross had 107 yards rushing with two scores for the Owls.

Ross got Rice within 10 points with a 1-yard run seconds into the fourth quarter.

“I thought we played well,” Rice coach David Bailiff said. “We are going to be a good Conference USA team. Our goals are still intact.”

Bringing history to life Port Aransas Historical Association’s Rick Pratt reconstituted the Farley Boat Works in 2011 to bring boat building back to Mustang Island. Since then 16 other boats have been built. They range from the classic Texas skiff to 20 foot long center consoles. Our boat is number 17. Not all have reached the water yet though.

Remember the boat at this point is upside down to attach the keel so it must be flipped upright.

This always provides a few anxious moments. One larger boat required the assistance of the mechanic crew from Nolan’s Marine.

Once flipped two more long rails, the gunwales, must be attached to the outer edge of the boat, the rear transom and the front stem. These too must be glued, screwed and manhandled into place. They provide structural stability,

something to grab onto and the elegance of mahogany. On the floorboard a full length pine plank six inches wide is attached to give more stability. Later another matching plank will be bolted through the outer keel to absorb any punishment the local waters might dispense.

Darrell Lynn likes to keep his shop fun in spite of the heat, the cramped. So following lunch one day we all had fried ice cream. While eating our encrusted honey dripped desert Darrell asked. “So who wants to go rowing? I think we need a break.”

Back at the shop we loaded row boats onto trailers and set out for the harbor. Joey and James Travis managed to navigate around the yachts, cruisers and fishing boats while Darrell and Jim headed out to the ship channel.

The following is what happened when the families of Kunio Iwashita and Alberto C. Nisi met in 2003.

Many years later, married and himself a father, Iwashita retired as an executive in the textile industry. He remained active with wartime comrades as President of the Zero Fighter Pilots Association and member of the Unabarakai*.

But Kunio could never forget that face over Iwo Jima.

Kunio Iwashita During the 50th Anniversary remembrances of WWII, Iwashita delivered a speech about his experiences. He revealed that it was his deepest hope to discover the identity of his first kill and pay his respects to the family. The request was passed to the US Navy Historical Society, and Kunio got his answer. Five American were shot down over Iwo Jima on July 4, 1944. One was rescued; the other four went ‘Missing In Action’. Although impossible to identify precisely which plane Iwashita shot down, one possibility stood out: his name was Alberto C. Nisi.

Alberto Nisi On July 4, 1944 Nisi was 26 years old serving aboard the USS Wasp with VF-14, the ‘Iron Angels’. Nisi was of Italian decent, and his family lived in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Before the war, he attended a two-year college and earned his degree in accounting, worked for the Electric Boat Company in Connecticut, and joined the US Navy Reserves. Prior to his July 4th mission, he was constantly writing his sister,

I was asked to join the club as an 18-year old American GI in 1947 One of those ‘Roosters’ with whom I became friends was ’Iwashita-san.’

Next with a reciprocating saw the excess stem at the bottom of the bow was trimmed. With a steady hand the shape of the boat is traced out on a 15 foot 8 inch long plywood sheet. A Wish Becomes Reality For Kunio Iwashita

The original Farley Boat works was established by Fred Farley about 1916 and carried on by his two sons, Jim and Fred where as a youngster Bubba would learn the craft that enabled him to build more than 50 boats of his own. At 95 years old Bubba is still helping and actively building.

The original name was “Rooster Club,” as the group grew older and wiser; they expanded their membership and renamed the club “Unabarakai.” Unabara in Japanese means “a vast ocean”, while “kai” means “club” or “association”.

Corpus Christi Police Property Crimes Detectives are asking the public’s assistance to help identify a woman responsible for stealing an assortment of cigarette cartons from the Stripes store at 1250 Flour Bluff Drive on Friday August 23. It was 1:49 in the a.m. – a time when not much good happens in The Bluff. The woman grabbed several cartons of cigarettes, brand unknown, and smoked her heals on the way out the door.

She stumbled, she slid, but she made good her getaway. She’s described as a White female, 20 to 25 years of age, and last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue shirt. She fled in a maroon Hyundai.

Instead of celebration when the baby arrived, there was a telegraph. Ensign Alberto Nisi was ‘missing in action’. Born two days after his uncle’s death, Terrence Nisi’s life paralleled his uncle’s: he studied accounting, shared a love for golf and served in Vietnam.

Nisi Family Today Albert Nisi’s siblings, Victor and Mary, live in Massachusetts. By coincidence, Iwashita’s daughter and her husband also live in Massachusetts. After Iwashita made contact with the family, he informed his daughter about the planned meeting. She worried about the implications of her father meeting a former enemy. Iwashita held firm.

Terrence Nisi recalled the moment his family received Iwashita’s letter: “Since Alberto died almost 60 years ago, I feared this might open up old wounds for his brother and sister, I talked to them first. Alberto was someone I didn’t know, but I was always compared with him. If Mr. Iwashita was possibly an eyewitness to the final moments of his life, I wanted to meet him. My uncle has no grave, he was missing in action.”

The Meeting- June 20, 2003 Trepidation rankled both sides prior to the June 20, 2003 meeting. The entire Nisi family would be there, only Victor was unable to attend due to health reasons. Iwashita declined any media coverage of the meeting. It was to be a private affair.

After introductions, Iwashita explained his recollections of the combat and answered the family’s queries. The former Zero pilot even entertained numerous questions from Albert Nisi’s curious 11-year-old great-nephew. The atmosphere of the two-hour meeting was gentle.

Then the Nisi family showed Kunio a wartime photograph of Alberto in the cockpit of his F6F Hellcat.

Kunio Iwashita and Terrance Terrance Nisi reflected on the meeting: “Mr. Iwashita’s visit moved us very deeply. It took a lot of courage for him to meet us. He was a proud fighter pilot, still that doesn’t mitigate the feeling when you take someone’s life.” As we pause to reflect on the legacy of WWII, perhaps we should also reflect on these two courageous families and their special meeting.

9-11 5K Run Honoring Coastal Bend First Responders On Saturday, September 7, 2013, the second annual Patriot 5K Fun Run & Walk will take place in memory of the 12th anniversary of September 11, 2001. Adopt-A Beach Set for Sept. 28

2nd Annual Wounded Warrior’s Heroes Cup

Every year, beachgoers leave tons of trash on Texas beaches. And even more washes up from the Gulf of Mexico.

Show your support for our troops

That’s why Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson is issuing the call for an army of volunteers of all ages to help keep our beaches naturally pristine and safe for all to enjoy at the Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Fall Cleanup.

“We’re looking for a few good Texans to help keep our beaches litter-free,” Patterson said. “Join us on Sept. 28, for an enjoyable, memorable event to clean up our coast.”

Volunteers may register at check-in sites between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013. (St. Jo Island and I-45 Estuarial Corridor volunteers must register in advance.)

Most of the 29 sites will provide cold drinks, hot food and fun activities immediately following the cleanup.

Now in its 27th year, 446,000 Adopt-A-Beach volunteers have picked up 17 million pounds of litter from the Gulf Coast. To participate, register at www.TexasAdoptABeach.org.

Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes, a hat and sunscreen. They will be provided with data cards, gloves, pencils and trash bags.

Those who can’t make it on Sept. 28 will have a second opportunity later this fall. A competitive, four-wheel drive excursion, cleanup and treasure hunt – the Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup Expedition – is set for Nov. 2 at Padre Island National Seashore. And year-round, anyone may donate to Adopt-A-Beach online at www.

TexasAdoptABeach.org. Sponsorship levels range from $25 to $25,000, tax-deductible.

The cleanup does more than simply remove litter from the beach. Data collected from previous Adopt-A-Beach cleanups played an important role in the passage of an international treaty (MARPOL Annex V) restricting the dumping of plastics in the world’s oceans. In 1991, the International Maritime Organization prohibited the dumping of trash, except for finely grounded food scraps, into the Gulf of Mexico.

For the 2nd year in a row the Warrior’s Weekend Heroes cup will be held in Rockport-Fulton Texas. The community is honored and humbled to be chosen to entertain these wounded soldiers who have given so much for our country.

Warrior’s Weekend Heroes Cup is a fishing expedition for war-injured soldiers. The Event will be held September 6, 2013 in RockportFulton. 32 wounded American Soldiers will begin a celebration of their service to us with an escorted parade into Aransas County on September 5. They will then be treated as special guests with complimentary rooms, meals, and other activities, including a chance to win the Heroes Cup Tournament.

Heroes Cup is an annual fishing tournament put together by the Warriors W e e k e n d organization. It is a special event for soldiers who have been injured in the line of duty. All participants are still active in the military. Soldiers are chosen for this competition, and are brought into town, paired with a volunteer professional angler, and taken into the bay for a five- hour competitive fishing trip. While the soldiers do get a shot at winning the competition, more importantly they also get a chance to relax, have fun, and enjoy the companionship of an appreciative citizen. They can leave the battlefield and take pleasure in the bay.

How Islander David Dunseth became a Nigerian Chieftain

By Mary Craft David Dunseth has been in the fish farming field since the 70s. He got a PhD in aguaculture which he said “That’s just a fancy word for fish farming.” One of his teachers told him about an interesting project that Shell Oil Company was doing that needed his expertise. They were the largest oil producer in Nigeria at the time and were very good about giving back to the community. They wanted to hire someone to help build a fish farm in one of the villages that the people there could build and run themselves.

The oil drillings were done along the coast and the villages along the 20-30 mile deep mangrove is where they needed fish farms to increase the number of fish instead of just relying on just natural resources.

Time to don a robe and crown

Africa Bound David left in 1979 with his wife and three small children in tow. They lived in one on the “camps” for foreigners which were hardly that. The residential area of homes had a golf course, swimming pool and school. Most of the residents were Dutch and English.

David would drive or go by boat every day the 30 miles to the village where he would help build a fish farm on 16 acres with 25 ponds. The land was cleared by 50 tribal women because that was the type of work they were responsible for. The levees to build the ponds were made

After two years the 50 men David trained were able to run the facility on their own. David came to find out how much they all appreciated him when he was surprised by a big celebration.

David said “ I had no idea what was in store!”

There were many prominent people in the crowd including Shell executives who were easy to spot in their shirt and tie. After a group of women did a traditional dance and sang a song about how respected and trusted he was they presented him with the regalia of a chieftain. He had to kneel before the tribal leader and a necklace of pink coral was placed over his head and a Crown/cap was placed on his head. After the oath of fealty David had to say “Ama, Ama, Ama.” David still has the regalia and plenty of memories to go along with it.

on Friday. The tone was break neck at both those shows and the audiences obviously loved what they were hearing. It’s a good thing that Giggity’s has such a big dance floor.

Time to exhale…

Welcome to the other side boys and girls, you may now exhale. We are post-Labor Day and the 2013 tourist season is officially in the bag. So now what do you want to do? Well, you got a lot of time to think about it. Giggity’s put on a great “Local’s Party” on Monday for all us homey’s who either worked their collective rears off all summer or were just suffering from tourist exhaustion. They put out a nice complimentary Cajun boil and ran cheap drink specials all night for all the locals to enjoy. Antone and the All Stars kept the music going strong all night and there wasn’t a tourist in sight. Thanks Edwin and Amy!

Limo’s and spa’s…

And on Tuesday, all the girls at the Back Porch got to celebrate the end of season with their annual “Spa Day” excursion. In past years, previous owner, Susan Powell, would shut the bar down on the Tuesday after Labor Day and treat all the Back Porch employees (99% females) to a trip into town in a limo where they would all go to the spa and get their hair and nails done and then hit Scuttlebutt’s for drinks and dinner on the way home. This year, manager Tracey Shore actually bought her own limo and kept the tradition alive. Tracey will be starting her own limo service on the islands (check out her new ad in the music box). A good time was had by all.

The Toman Brothers will play Giggity’s this Saturday.

Hold Fast Fables…

One show that I delight in telling you about was Hold Fast Fables (Galveston, TX). They put on a brilliant performance at Shorty’s on Saturday. They are a three piece acoustic ensemble (guitar, cello and tambourine) with vocal harmonies that go beyond sweet. With everything going on, the way it was on Saturday night, I still found myself glued to this show. I didn’t want to miss one single song. Those guys are magnificent. All of their songs are original and full of life. Make it a point to see this band the next time they’re around. I can’t emphasize enough how great they are.

No wonder my ears are ringing…

I ran around all weekend (and I do mean ran) and caught a dozen good shows around town: Brooke Graham, Uel Jackson, Free Beer Band, The Pete Denney Blues Band, Ruben Limas and the Rolling Jays (three times), Davin James, Larry Joe Taylor, Ray T and the City Crew, Hold Fast Fables, Mike Milligan and the Altar Boys and Buster Jiggs.

Fortunately, all of these shows were in a half mile radius of each other and I only had to jockey around from Shorty’s to Giggity’s to the Ice House and the Back Porch. That’s one great thing about Port A, even when we are consumed in tourists… everything is convenient. I was able to see all of these artists with only a short walk between venues.

Sharkey’s cancels concerts…

In other Labor Day related news, the big shows over at Sharkey’s were cancelled at the last minute. The promoters from San Antonio notified me on Friday afternoon that Los Lonely Boys had cancelled their Sunday show because the guitar player had reinjured his back after a fall off a stage in California a couple of months ago, and his doctor had advised him not to travel. They shopped around for a comparable replacement act but ran out of time and were

Carol Elliott will play the Tarpon Ice House this Friday.

Favorite songbird, Carol Elliott, will play her regular First Friday show at the Tarpon Ice House from 6:30- 8:30. Also, the monthly First Friday reception at the Island Art Center (next door to the Ice House) will be going on and that makes for a nice combination of music and art.

And on the near horizon, watch for shows in September by Mandy Rowden and Billy Abels (Shorty’s), Richard Lockhart (Giggity’s), Mike Milligan (Back Porch), Melissa Brooke (Sunset Sounds), J.T. Coldfire (Giggity’s) and Kinky Friedman (The Gaff). The Kinky Friedman show at the Gaff will be on Thursday, September 19th. There will be a Pirate Parade before the show in the streets of Port A. We are trying to get Kinky to jump in one of the Gaff’s pirate boats and show us his best parade wave.

Maybe Lighthouse Rick can talk him into it or bribe him with a good cigar. ♪♫ And, that’s the truth! ♪♫

The dynamic duo, Jul and the Chrome Wheels (South Padre Island, TX) will play Friday and Saturday at Shorty’s. Be sure to catch them sometime during the weekend, they are a blast. Our favorite trop rockers, Aloha Dave and the Tourists featuring wild man, Ray Summy on guitar, will be at the Back Porch on Friday and Port A’s darling, Melissa Brooke, will be there on Saturday. Also on Saturday, the incredible Toman Brothers (San Antonio, TX) will be at Giggity’s. The Tomans used to be the late Gary Stewart’s road band and recently opened for the Fabulous Thunderbirds at Sharkey’s. This is definitely a show to catch… they get my Pick of the Week.

And finally, the jumping Tex-Mex band, the Tejas Brothers (Ft. Worth, TX) featuring the amazing Dave Perez on vocals and accordion, will play the Third Coast Theater on Saturday.

I saw their show there last year and know it’s definitely a great place to see this band. You can’t beat the acoustics or atmosphere of that great listening room.

There were several standout shows in my opinion over the weekend. Mike Milligan and the Altar Boys (Austin, TX) put on a super F Ishow N E atA Giggity’s RT outstanding on Saturday.

The concert series, billed as Port Aransas Summer Fest, featuring five weekends of high profile shows throughout August (Fabulous Thunderbirds, Joe Ely, Corey Morrow and Rick Trevino) didn’t come close to breaking even. For whatever reason, the crowds did not happen and the whole effort was pretty much a financial disaster. When asked for her take on the situation, Sharkey’s Kristin Muennink proprietor, Glenda McCormick, had of the Buster Jiggs only to offer, “It is what it is.” On a bright note, the backyard at Sharkey’s Band rips it up at is ready and available if anyone needs Giggity’s last Friday. a football field.

Ruben Limas and the Rolling Jays…

Our buddy from North Padre who usually plays solo, Ruben Limas, has recently started showing up with a band in tow… the Rolling Jays. Ruben is a highly energetic chap who can knock down a Bob Dylan or Neil Young song with the best of them, but I must say, adding a drummer (James DeHoyos) and bass player (Jim Haley) has really stepped up his game. I saw Ruben three times over the weekend at the Back Porch, Shorty’s and Giggity’s and found myself amazed at the depth of his repertoire.

This guy was born to entertain. He’s really quite engaging.
