In 1948, George Weiss was the General Manager of the Yankees, and he had just fired “Bucky” Harris and hired Casey Stengel. Casey was 58 years old and “washed up.” He had managed the Boston Braves and Brooklyn Dodgers with little success. “He was considered a clown by most,” said Hall-of-Fame second-baseman Bobby Doerr.

There are lots of great stories involving Casey.

One story about Casey has him wanting the umpires to suspend a game because of rain, but the umpires would not agree. Casey called timeout and approached home plate with an open umbrella to help state his cause. “It’s raining too hard to continue to play,” said Casey. The umpires finally agreed. Another story finds Casey arguing with the umpires because of darkness. These were the days of no stadium lights. When the umpires failed to call the game early, Casey would get a flashlight and start using it to signal his pitchers in the bullpen. The Yankees once played in Mexico during Spring Training, and Casey was asked if his team might be affected by playing in a higher altitude. “No,” said Casey. “We can lose in any altitude.”

Stengel was looked down upon and resented

by Joe DiMaggio and other Yankees, because he didn’t place them on their usual pedestals.

He had inherited some of Joe McCarthy’s players. They couldn’t figure out if Casey was the dumbest guy or the smartest guy. “I was hired to win and I expect to win,” said Stengel.

In 1949, the Red Sox had the better team and were expected to win the pennant. Stengel’s Yankees caught the Red Sox and beat them on the last day of the season. They went on to “whip” the Brooklyn Dodgers in five games, to win the World Series. It would be the start of five straight World-Series victories, unheard of in today’s game (1949-1953). Casey said afterwards, “I could have never done it without my players.” Stengel placed DiMaggio at first base the following year. Joe was “ticked-off” and remained bitter the rest of his life. It was Stengel’s way of telling Joe it was time to go.

DiMaggio retired at the end of the 1951 season.

He loved Billy Martin, treated him like a son he never had. He stayed on Mickey Mantle to be better and spoke highly of Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra.

“When the bartender serves Casey his bottled beer, Casey grabs it up and gulps it down right away,” says Gowdy. “The bartender tells Casey, ‘You shouldn’t drink your beer that fast.’ Casey responds, ‘I’ve always done that since my accident.’ The bartender says, ‘What accident?’

Casey responds, ‘Someone once knocked a bottle of beer over on me.’”

Yankee pitcher Jim Coates tells about the time he and several other players came in late after curfew. When they get on the elevator the operator hands them a ball for their autograph.

The next day, Casey singles them out for missing curfew. They denied being late until Casey shows them the ball he had given the elevator operator.

I will leave you with one last story. One time, pitcher Roger Craig was preparing to pitch against the San Francisco Giants. Casey said, “Now about Mays: Do not worry about him, Roger, no one has figured out how to get Mays out, yet. But, this McCovey kid, where do you want your right fielder to play, the upper deck, or lower deck?”

He is most widely known for two things, winning and “Stengelese.” Stengel managed the Yankees for 12 years winning 10 American League pennants and 7 World Series titles.

Stengelese was his way of giving you an interview without giving away any information.

It was double-talk and drove writers’ nuts.

Comes a time…

Charles Dillon Stengel, was born on July 30, 1890, in Kansas City, Missouri. He died on September 29, 1975, of cancer. It has been said that during his remaining days in the hospital before his death, he watched baseball on television. The day before he died, he got out of bed and stood at attention for the National Anthem. On his headstone, these words are chiseled. “There comes a time in every man’s life and I’ve had plenty of them.” He was 85.

Sportswriter Jim Murray wrote on the day after Stengel died, “Well, God is getting an earful today. I hope he understands the infield-fly rule, the hit and run, how to pitch to Hornsby with men on, when to platoon, and when it would be good for you to bunt. They finally slipped a called third strike past Casey Stengel. The game is over.”

Flour Bluff loses to Port Lavaca Calhoun

Late last Saturday afternoon the Hornets met their match. Port Lavaca Calhoun blasted Flour Bluff and outmuscled the Hornets from the start and in the end won the hotly contested match 27-21 in the Region IV-4A Division II arearound game in San Antonio’s Alamo Dome.

The Hornets were six points behind with little more than a minute left on the clock and no timeouts left. Flour Bluff held Calhoun on downs at the Hornets’ 21, they then started driving down the field with a chance to win it.

Quarterback Cody Brewer guided the Hornets to the 43-yard line where an incomplete pass turned the ball over on downs with 11 seconds to go. This finalized Calhoun’s victory.

“We overcame a lot of things,” Calhoun coach Richard Whitaker said. “We put the ball on the ground, had a lot of penalties and overcame a lot of that to sustain some drives and our defense. It was probably the best game they’ve played all year long.”

“It’s been a matchup for us all year long,” Andrus said. “Those two are pretty special on the deep ball.”

Up to that point, Dewitt’s two catches accounted for 127 of the Flour Bluff’s 137 total yards of offense, but the twosome didn’t have to do it alone much longer. With other receivers, the Hornets increasingly used on the accurate arm of Brewer, with some “trick” plays thrown in.

After two Sandcrabs’ touchdowns put the Hornets behind 13 points with 6:19 left in the game, Brewer’s pass was complete to Aaron Dilworth, who tossed the ball backward to Dewitt which was good for a 27-yard gain.

This “hook and ladder” backward pass set up an 8-yard Brewer touchdown pass to Dilworth on the next play thus giving the Hornets a final drive to possibly win the game.

“Bottom line is we just didn’t make enough plays,” Andrus said. “I just wish we had a little more time there at the end.”

Flour Bluff’s defense did well to keep the Hornets in the game by making timely stops.

Twice, the Hornets took the ball away on Calhoun fumbles, and twice they stopped the Sandcrabs on fourth downs.

“We’ve got a great group of kids that are never going to quit,” Andrus said of his team. “Our defense played their hearts out all night.”

Port Lavaca running back Cory Williams, the team’s leading rusher this season with 1,907 yards, left the game early in the third quarter due to an injury. The Hornets did a great job in stopping Williams, holding him to just 33 yards.

“Cory’s fine, he’ll be fine next week,” Whitaker said. “He got hurt last week a little bit and was not completely healed this week, so we made a conscious effort (to keep him healthy). It was best for him to come out and get ready for the next one.”

Education Foundation Awards $7,800 in Grants The Flour Bluff ISD Foundation for Educational Excellence, Inc. surprised three campuses at Flour Bluff ISD on November 21 when they awarded $7,800 in campus grants. “This is the best part of being involved in the foundation,” says Lacy Harrelson, foundation board president. “Giving away the money to deserving teachers is what’s it all about.”

The foundation is in its tenth year of operation and has raised over $250,000 so far. The foundation’s mission is to give money to campuses and teachers by promoting quality education by establishing, supporting and enhancing programs not otherwise funded by the Flour Bluff Independent School District. A foundation committee then determines which ones will be funded. “We are lucky to have such a wonderful group of community members working hard to raise money for our teachers and students. We appreciate their efforts to help Flour Bluff ISD continue to have successful programs in our schools,” said Joe Kelley, Superintendent.

Flour Bluff Early Childhood Center, (Building Character with Kelso) in the amount of $600 to help teach character traits (Respect, Care, Fairness, Responsibility and Honesty) by utilizing photo cards that exhibit a specific trait negatively and positively.

Flour Bluff Primary School (Locomotion Bicycle Safety Course) in the amount of $2,200 to continue a project funded by the foundation in 2008 to teach bicycle safety to students. This project is in need of funds to upgrade and purchase additional bicycles and helmets to continue the successful program.

Winter Walks and Winter Evening Walks Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve is partnering with the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department again this year on Winter Walks, which focus on the importance of coastal wetlands. They will be held at the Port Aransas Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture.

Pedaling in the Preserve Pedaling in the Preserve continues Monday, Dec. 9, 10am.

Grab your bike and head to the Port Aransas Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture for a ride. Get to know one of the city’s treasures while meeting other riders. See what special natural elements make up the Nature Preserve. Meet at pavilion in Nature Preserve for a leisurely ride through the preserve. It’s not a race, just a ride.

Evening walks will be held at 5 pm, on Wednesdays nights begin at the covered picnic table in Phase II of the Nature Preserve, located on Hwy 361 south of Sharkey’s. The morning tours, like last year, will be held at 10 am on Saturdays. The morning nature walk in the Nature Preserve starts at the pavilion near the Corpus Christi Ship Channel in Phase I of the Nature Preserve, located at the end of Port Street.

Bring your camera to capture the delightful fauna and flora in the area. This free ride is held the second and fourth Monday of each month.

We’re Having Fun

“These two-mile walking tours are a great way to get out and explore the beautifully diverse flora and fauna of Port Aransas in the wintertime,” said NERR spokesman Colleen McCue.

WHF (We’re Having Fun) activities continue with another one scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 10. This program is where participants learn how to or not to, make or do something. A happy time whether it works or not; we always have fun. It will be at 2pm at the Girl Scout hut inside the Parks and Rec building, 739 W. Ave. A. While mainly attended by Winter Texans, it is hoped more of the locals will start coming. All are fairly simple events and all ages are invited. All WHF activities are free. The activity this time will be making coat hanger cloth wreaths.

Participants should wear walking shoes and sun screen, and dress in layers appropriate to the weather conditions. Bring binoculars, cameras and water. Subsequent guided tours will be held weekly on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings through the Jan. 29, 2014. The movie will be start at 7pm, and will be moved to the pavilion if it rains, or in the case of extreme winds or cold. Either way, sunny or rainy, calm or windy, the shows goes on. Celebrating our fiftieth year, The Port Aransas Garden Club will host its 26th annual Port Aransas Tour of Homes on Mustang Island Saturday January 25, 2014. The tour originates from the Port Aransas Community Center at 408 N. Alister Street in Port Aransas.

By Brent Rourk Get ready for a top notch performance of Steel Magnolias, coming to the Port Aransas Community Theater starting January 30th and performing through February 16th. Directed by Larry Stotts and assisted by Les Hoffman, this popular comedy-drama that takes place in a Northwest Louisiana beauty salon will leave you in stitches and at the same time permit you to tenderly reflect about friendships and life changing events.

This year’s “a glimpse of Island Life” tour features nine homes showcasing older homes, the new and modern, condos and remodeled residences and beachfront living. Five homes will be on the bus tour and all nine will be on the self-guided tour. With the bus tour ticket you also have the option to continue with the self-guided tour in the afternoon.

The play touchingly reveals the various bonds between a group of women who, as the title might suggest, are as delicate as Magnolias but as tough and durable as steel. Well-crafted by writer Robert Hartling and premiering in 1987, this play has been a favorite on and off Broadway for many years and was eventually made into a star-studded movie (1989) in addition to a pilot for a television series (1990). The play closely follows Hartling’s experiences concerning his own sister’s death.

Morning bus tours will be available for $25.00 per/person at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Self-guided tours will be between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING everybody!!! I’ve much to be thankful for… I’m still sucking air after 60 years of a life style that could only be described as challenging. Honestly, every day I wake up with out a yellow chalk line around my body is a good day. I am seriously thankful for my modest life on a lovely little island in the Gulf of Mexico where I have many, many dear friends and the best job a man could ever dream of. I want for nothing and am at peace with the world. I am truly blessed.

Time to chow down…

Tracey Shores and her big limo. mention that I’m the reining Turkey Bowling Champion of the world? You may have seen my picture on a Wheaties Box. Every year the Back Porch ends their season by selling the remainder of their beer inventory for dirt cheap prices and flinging frozen turkeys at bowling pins. It somehow makes sense. They will re-open in late February and start the whole process over. And speaking of the Back Porch, the manager over there, Tracey Shores, bought a very cool limousine and has some great holiday rates going. Her phone number is on the Island Limo ad in the Live Music Tonight box, so keep her in mind through the holidays when it’s time to party and no one wants to be the designated driver. It’s a very classy way to roll.

(Stephenville, TX) in his solo acoustic mode. On Friday he will share the bill with Deryl Dodd and on Saturday with Austin songbird Ashley Monical (Austin, TX).

Larry Joe is an island Ashley Monical fave and plays here at least once a month… he will open for Larry needs no introduction Joe Taylor on in these parts. Dodd, Saturday. a native Texan who moved to Nashville, has toured with Faith Hill and Tim McGraw and released five studio albums and charted nine singles on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Monical has really got some pipes, which took her to Hollywood in the 10th season of American Idol. Some compare her to the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones, Jewel & Sheryl Crow with a hint of Janis’ raspy quality. She hooked up with Larry Joe through his annual music festival in Stephenville where she won the new talent competition.

For Thanksgiving dinner I plan to swing by the Tarpon Ice House for a great pot luck dinner with the people I love enough to call family.

The Free Beer Band will crank it up around 7:00 and it just doesn’t get any better. Speaking of the Free Beer Band, I was on hand last week to actually see Steve Goldstein’s wife, Andrea, show off her newly acquired fiddle skills. It’s never too late! She did a great job.

Shorty’s is the coolest…

Because the weather has been cold and rainy lately, the folks over at Shorty’s have had to put the music inside the bar and I really dig it. Billy Snipes played there on Friday and Stevie Start on Saturday and it was the coolest.

They kept the volume down and it couldn’t have been more Billy Snipes played comfortable. Jul and Shorty’s last Friday the Chrome Wheels night.

(Austin, TX) will be there this weekend but the weather is supposed to be nice and they’ll more than likely play out on the porch. Shorty’s is my new favorite bar. The scene over there is just great. They are doing their shows from 7-11 now and I’m told they plan to go even earlier as the Winter Texans arrive. Seriously, you need to check out Shorty’s if you haven’t already. It’s the perfect island bar steeped in local history.

One of my favorite artists of all times, Ray

Ray Wylie Hubbard will play theThird Coast Theater on Dec. 7th.

Joe Bonamassa will play the American Bank Center this Friday.

There’s a big show at the American Bank Center in Corpus this Friday with blues rocker Joe Bonamassa. Bonamassa was a child prodigy who could play Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix songs, lick for lick by the time he was seven years old. At the age of eleven, he was mentored by guitar wizard, Larry Gatton and opened a show for B.B. King at the age of 12.

The Guardian said of him: “the 35-year-old from upstate New York has consolidated a reputation as the pre-eminent blues-rock guitarist of his generation”. Bonamassa has received a number of honors and accolades; some recent ones include: Guitar International’s 2011 “Guitarist of the Year,” “Breakthrough Artist of the Year”

Wylie Hubbard (Wimberley, TX) will play the Third Coast Theater on December 7th. Brian Keane will open the show. Originally from Oak Cliff, Texas, Hubbard is probably best known for writing the Jerry Jeff Walker hit, Up Against the Wall Redneck Mothers, but don’t hold that against him. He has released 16 recordings since 1971 and is considered an elder statesman of the Texas Music scene. I consider Hubbard to be a poetic genius and songwriter with few peers. I once drove non-stop from San Antonio to Gainesville, Florida with only one CD in the truck (Delirium Tremelos) and listened to it over and over for 16 hours straight. I still pull it out and listen to it frequently. His latest effort, Grifter’s Hymnal is truly a work of art. Hubbard plays a folky, bluesy, sliding finger picking style with lyrics so colorful, they could put your eye out. He’s both hilarious and bone chilling. If you could imagine Lightning Hopkins meets Lenny Bruce at Steve Earle’s house… that would be Ray Wylie Hubbard. He’s as real as it gets. I think he hung the moon and wouldn’t miss this show for love or money.

Sea Drifters (San Antonio, TX) will be there on Friday and the Melissa Brooke Band will be there on Saturday. I’ve been seeing Melissa around town lately, touting a new fiddle player who is actually pretty bad ass. His name is Eddie Dickenson and he’s just moved to Texas from Virginia. I don’t know much about him, but from what I’ve seen, he can pretty much shred that fiddle. We did a Pickers Circle at the Ice House last Sunday and Melissa and Eddie showed up and stole the show… no easy task with the line- Melissa Brooke and up Uel Jackson put Eddie Dickinson at the together that day. If Tarpon Ice House last you know where to Sunday. look even in this off season, there’s still great music around.
